And Now, an Incredible Tiny Desk Concert by Thundercat

Oct. 18, 2017 | Bobby Carter — Thundercat, born Stephen Bruner, is willing and able to shape-shift to fit into just about any box you show him — he just won’t stay in there for long. Whether fusing his talent for jazz while a bassist with punk legacy act Suicidal Tendencies or as a member of Snoop Dogg’s band — maybe running a little too far with a solo here and there — the focus seems to eventually drift his way.

After releasing two brilliant solo albums, he was plucked to work on what eventually became one of the most important works of art released this decade: Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly. Capitalizing off of the new exposure, he quickly released the EP The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam. That was followed about two years later by Drunk, his most solid project to date.

I didn’t know what to expect in the days leading to the performance, but I was hoping to get what I thought a Thundercat experience would be like. All boxes ended up checked: He arrived wearing a neon pink hoodie with his signature logo plastered about, kickboxing shorts, white chancletas, playing a Nintendo portable gaming console. He and his bandmates Dennis Hamm, Justin Brown and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, all master musicians in their own right, polished off some bacon croissant sandwiches and proceeded to give us three of the best of what Drunk has to offer.

Set List

“Lava Lamp”
“Friend Zone”
“Them Changes”

MUSICIANS

Steven Bruner (vocals, bass); Dennis Hamm (keys); Justin Brown (drums); Miguel Antwood Ferguson (violin)

CREDITS

Producers: Bobby Carter, Morgan Noelle Smith; Creative Director: Bob Boilen; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Morgan Noelle Smith, Maia Stern, Alyse young; Production Assistant: CJ Riculan; Photo: Jennifer Kerrigan/NPR.

Some of the great bass players I’ve worked with:

Stanley Clarke
Jaco Pastorius
Nathan East
Jimmy Haslip
Neil Stubenhaus
Andrew Ford
Ricky Minor
Jerry Manfredi

Some of these are session players or people you never heard of, because they’re awesome but never got famous.

Growing up in Louisiana, I always thought of Fats as kind of a local talent. Never realized that during his peak years he outsold everybody but Elvis. Outsold Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry combined. When the British invasion came along, he never changed his style a notch.

What a great life, a man making the music he loved from when he was young, young, young to when he was old, old, old. They’re boogeyin upstairs tonight.

It never ends. It really doesn’t. The media has decided to dance along to the same goddamn GOP tune as always without a moment of fucking hesitation or thought, exacting higher standards than they’d ever apply to the Republicans, and already casting verdict.

Meanwhile, this administration is basically tearing about the foundations of everything in this country at lightspeed to the point we may not even have a proper fucking country by the ‘18 elections. We may as well be the Privatized States of Trump at this rate. And there seems to be jack all we can do to slow it down, because the GOP controls goddamn everything.

Reddit is banning Nazi subreddits.
thedailybeast.com
The scumbags will spill into every main page subreddit unless they IP ban and ban all VPNs. This is what happens when you don’t police a site and let monsters settle in and feel entitled to your free service. They’ve dug a hole they may not be able to dig out of.
Eventually they’ll have to ban r/the_donald and it’ll get really interesting.

Evening folks. I’m covered in bleach, so don’t wear any non-colorfast clothes around me tonight.

I didn’t have to think about Trump and the Destroyers for a few hours because of a local emergency.

I got a call near sunset from the village mechanic; our smaller well was flooding the village shop. (Nice thing to wake up to.)

I called the gun shop owner because he is more familiar with the mechanics of our water system than I am.

We tore over to the shop; the chlorinator exploded. The water tower’s pressure was pushing back water through the chlorinator hence the flooding. I shut off the valve that feeds the water pump with chlorine and changed the chlorinator with another one we have in reserve.

Surprise, that one floods as well. (The spare is bad.) I shut down the smaller well, because we are still under a state order to keep our water chlorinated at a certain level.

By that time we had about six people over at the shop. Someone asked me if I could fix it—I reminded them I am an electronics technician and erotic Romance novel editor.

Also, someone was bulldozing across the street (a trailer burned a couple months ago), and managed to bulldoze the top of the water meter off.

Man, they ain’t paying me enough for this (they ain’t paying me at all for this). I’m going to have to see if I can get a new chlorinator either from the county seat (I am waiting on a call now), or order a new one ($$$).

From the last thread:

re: #304 lawhawk

Let’s not forget that Jared Kushner was registered to vote in two states, and that he also was listed as female on his voter registration form in NY.

The GOP is trying to make a big issue out of being registered in two states as well (the theme being you could vote in two states). It is not illegal to be registered in two states, it is only illegal to vote twice.

When we moved here from Oklahoma, my wife and I made a concerted effort to be removed from the voter rolls in Oklahoma. It is actually quite difficult to do (had to get a letter from the county prosecutor for each of us saying we wanted to be removed, it was our own free will, &c). About two months after we sent the letters my wife and I got letters back from Oklahoma acknowledging we were removed.

As much effort as they are giving this, it tells me some of the Congress, especially the Senators, know what they are up against and this is their hope to kill the investigations. Guys like Chuck Grassley have an inside to some of the details. Grassley is also involved on pissing all over it too.

re: #21 jaunte

If I was a prudent big time CEO, COO, or any type of developer, I would not make large investment decisions based Zinke’s “Secretarial Orders” or trumps rescinding of “Rules and Regulations” by Executive Orders. The invalidation may only be in effect until we get rid of this administration. Investments of this type transcend multiple Presidential administrations. It would be risky to think otherwise. Shirts could be lost.

Keep in mind the actual Congressional Acts (NEPA, Clean Air and Water Act, Endangered Species Act, etc.) are still in place. Each individual Act authorizes the Cabinet Agencies to create the “Rules and Regulations” (known as the CFR’s) for implementation of the individual Act. trump has only disposed of certain Rules and Regulations (the CFR’s) that implement the Act(s), NOT the individual Acts themselves. EVERY ONE OF THESE ACTS IS STILL THE LAW! It will take Congressional action followed by a Presidential signature to repeal any of the multitude of Environmental Acts which the Republicans wish to eliminate. (Please, don’t give them any ideas.)

So, something I was taught in HS Civics class a very long time ago, is one simple statement: “Whatever is destroyed by the pen, can be recreated by the pen!

They want to come to our next board meeting to make a pitch for that. They provide service in a number of Colorado and Wyoming towns, and a few in W. Nebraska. (Guess we’ll be calling to find out from those towns what sort of charges they ask from that company for rental space.)

If someone can explain to me the joys of Baseball, I’ll attempt to explain Cricket.

Baseball is a game wherein players spit, scratch in unseemly ways, and attempt difficult athletic actions which rarely succeed but are calculated down to a thousandth of a percentage point and preserved forever. It is the infield fly rule and the difference between a wild pitch and a passed ball; but these are matters better explained by a 33rd-degree Mason. It is Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, and on the darker side, Yankee Stadium. It is heaven and hell, with a large portion of purgatory between pitches. It is the most perfect game on earth.

So apparently there is a white supremacist / Nazi rally on Saturday in Murfreesboro, TN. A lot of my dog agility friends are in Murfreesboro this weekend for a dog agility national championship. I’m really disappointed I am not attending the event this year because I really would love to go fuck with those assholes. So if you’re in the area, go counter protest them! :)

I don’t know about Murfreesboro, but in most of the towns near me it’s pretty hard to tell whether on any given day, Saturday not, the place is or isn’t hosting a white supremacist/Nazi rally.

Not to be pedantic, but it’s supposed to be in Shelbyville, not Murfreesboro, but, frankly, it’s a distinction without a difference for most; I’d rather see the Nazi fuckers not having a goddamn rally anywhere in my state, but I digress.

Murfreesboro has a great facility that can fit 5 rings all on dirt. One of the better facilities that has GREAT dirt for a national event in dog agility in the country.

Both sides - trump is so gd’ed awful they seek anything with which to tarnish democrats. The facts reveal there is nothing there - so what - the media and congress have a new dream to follow.

I have never been this depressed about the world - that the country we once admired has elected a dumb ridiculous showman as their president* does not give hope for the future.

Beware of the 5 Lb. Bag of Sugarless Gummy Bears on Amazon.com - the Reviews Are Priceless!

It just got serious, though, and much, much worse.
Haribo gummy bears made from slavery, according to documentary

Haribo, purveyor of yummy gummy bears and other candies, has been accused by a German documentary of producing a product made from “slavery” and animal cruelty.

The documentary, “The Haribo Check” — produced by WDR, German public broadcasting — says that the candy company is perpetuating poor living conditions for both humans and animals by using suppliers who treat workers and pigs inhumanely.

Haribo said in several releases on its press site that it is investigating the claims to see if suppliers are treating animals and workers in the way depicted in the 44-minute documentary. The company wrote that it will act accordingly if the accusations turn out to be accurate, even if it means separating from those suppliers.

If only the Dems had their own 24 hour TV and radio propaganda channels plus guests who would appear all day, every day solely to muddy the waters and make Hillary out to be the world’s biggest victim.

This is what the Dems are up against and they still have no strategy to effectively counter it.

The GOP is going to claim that Muller’s investigation is hopelessly comprised due to its ties to the Clinton campaign - I know that’s not true, but thanks to our glorious 1st Amendment truth has no place in the media if it hurts your party, so the shit storm over this has just begun. The Dems will do what most of them always do, stand around with their thumb up their ass and do nothing, so the GOP will control the narrative and the news cycles.

The Longview (Tex.) News-Journal, a newspaper in Rep. Louie Gohmert’s district that doesn’t care much for Louie, weighed in with an op-ed Gohmert Continues to Serve His Own Agenda on his vote against Hurricane Harvey aid.

The whole thing is worth a read, but this line sticks out:

Knowing Gohmert, the “logic” of his vote could be much more esoteric. It is possible he worried that undocumented immigrants would use the money to produce anchor babies who might then become future gay members of space colonies.

re: #133 Eclectic Cyborg

“Faith based organizations.”

How in the fucking hell is that constitutional??

Well, while a secular organisation in theory could sue, the government could argue they have no standing.

Moreover, Geo. W. Bush created the Office of Faith-Based Initiatives.

On June 25, 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Hein v. Freedom From Religion Foundation that executive orders may not be challenged on Establishment Clause grounds by individuals whose sole claim to legal standing is that they are taxpayers. Both of President Bush’s court appointees, John G. Roberts and Samuel Alito, sided with the majority.

Presumably, this religious grift of tax money will go through that office. Since the Supreme Court has already ruled “no dice” on this to taxpayers, as far as I can tell is we’re screwed.

The Wikipedia article notes a number of controversies with things financed through that office, such as funding an Evangelical prison ministry in Iowa, and Bush only directing money to faith groups that supported his candidacy.

If someone can explain to me the joys of Baseball, I’ll attempt to explain Cricket.

Baseball is the perfect radio game, because only one thing happens at a time. You can lie in a lounge chair by the pool with your eyes closed, and “see” it just as well as the people who bought tickets, drove through traffic, walked 1/2 a mile through the parking lot, and waited in line for over-priced snacks.

Also, there’s no clock. No matter how far behind your team is after 8 innings, it’s still theoretically possible to catch up and win.

Also, the potential for stunning memorable moments. Like Kirk Gibson winning the 1988 world series at the very last second with legs so injured he couldn’t even run the bases, had to walk them. I’m not even a baseball fan, but 30 years later I still get a thrill remembering that.)
