Politics • Views: 39,360

Here we go, folks. A lot of people didn’t expect things to happen this soon, but… CNN is reporting tonight: First charges filed in Mueller investigation.

Washington (CNN) — A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter.

The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge. Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said. It is unclear what the charges are.A spokesman for the special counsel’s office declined to comment.

I hope they manage to avoid leaks over the weekend so that everyone in the Trump Crime Organization has a shitty weekend because they don’t know who it is.

I’m going to guess either Flynn or Manafort, the guys most likely to be seen as vulnerable.

And we’ll end up in a war (conventional or nuclear) before the weekend’s out, so Trump can “wag the dog”.

Not much to go on at this point, but Manafort seems more likely, since Flynn has probably been turned.

Mueller’s first indictments are rolling, and Fox is busy with the agitprop brigade trying to throw chaff in the air to confuse Trump’s supporters about the impending actual and very real indictments that will be revealed soon enough.

Who it could be?

Flynn or Manafort are very likely possibilities, but so too are Kushner, Page, or even Donny Jr.

I’d actually rate the odds in that very order: Flynn, Manafort, Kushner, Page, or Donny Jr.

All of them have some level of exposure on criminal acts - Flynn and Manafort on being undeclared foreign agents, Kushner for the multiple lies and security clearance issues with SF-86 that omitted key meetings with Russians over multiple iterations, Page, and Donny Jr. for similar issues.

Flynn in particular opens up the door on not just Trump but Pence too. Both worked closely together on the transition, and Pence knew or had reason to know of Flynn’s problems, and ignored them or otherwise failed to do his job.

All in all, Trump’s golfing this weekend is going to be …. interesting.

re: #21 Charles Johnson

Good question.

A couple possibilities:
1) Mueller’s team dropped hints to Trump team that this was going to happen (to see what Trump would do - like flushing out game)
2) Someone might have been noticing activity at the courts more than usual, and surmised that the indictments were impending and therefore dropped lines to key media types to throw up the chaff
3) Someone leaked (whether inside the investigation itself, or the focus of the investigation).

44
451_Montag  Oct 27, 2017 • 6:11:42pm

Interesting on CNN. The reporter (didn’t catch her name) stated that they know the nameS, plural, but aren’t reporting them.

Could imagine Manafort being exposed for prior shenanigans, but that would give Trump a talking point that it had nothing to do with him. All it needs is one person in the campaign, while working for the campaign for shit to get really real.

When the Mueller investigation started I was of the opinion they would claim a couple scalps, likely Flynn and Manafort, but they wouldn’t really get anyone at the top of the administration. Unfortunately, I still think that is the most likely scenario.

I dunno. Mueller seems determined to get to the bottom of this. I need to refresh on Watergate but I’m sure it started out with some small fish being fried too before it made its way to Ehrlichman and Haldemann and eventually Tricky Dicky himself.

74
lawhawk  Oct 27, 2017 • 6:26:28pm

Watch for the GOP to deflect and try to ram through the tax cuts/budget slashing ASAP because they too must know that their chances to do any of it will get vaporized the moment the indictments are unsealed and we begin to see the scope of just how thoroughly compromised this administration is.

What would be particularly entertaining is if the indictments also include Rohrabacher and GOPers in Congress. Because all the comments that Ryan and McCarthy said about who was bought/paid by Russia will come back to screw the whole lot of them. They knew - and violated their oaths in the process.

Putin’s influence campaign is on the ropes. I think he may bring out his figurative nuclear option (as opposed to the literal one he also has.) That would be outing Cold War era Soviet agents in an effort to discredit the left and, by dimbulb GOP extension, the Democratic Party and liberalism in general. In my humble opinion, this is worse than Watergate, Iran-Contra, or Teapot Dome. This is colluding with a hostile foreign power to gain political power. It’s even worse than what the Nixon team pulled in 1968.

Good thread and some considerations:

I’m thinking that the strategy might be to flush out more wrongdoing within the admin because Mueller knows how easily triggered Trump is and he can and will say something incriminating that will be incontrovertible proof of his wrongdoing.

At this point, you can bet the Adult Day Care workers in the WH are trying to take Trump’s cellphone so he can’t tweet this weekend.

Trump pardoning his cronies one after the other will eventually get so blatant as to turn the mainstream media decisively against Trump, with serious collateral damage to the whole Republican party.

That’s a big risk to take, since the Republicans rely heavily on the both-siderist shielding they get from the media.

Nonsense. They readily forgave and forgot everything they were told to, because the holy cause of killing That Woman’s career was paramount. Now they’re effectively co-conspirators, “in blood Stepped in so far that, should [they] wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o’er.”

146
William Lewis  Oct 27, 2017 • 7:07:31pm

Like I said recently about something else, they can no longer win. The culture itself has changed. Ten years ago, this couldn’t have been imagined:

It was TV history made in a moment. Goofy 13-year-old Cyrus Goodman came out as gay by confiding to his good friend Buffy that he had a crush on a boy. That boy is cool kid Jonah Beck, who just started dating Cyrus and Buffy’s best friend, Andi Mack.

The show is the Disney Channel’s hit tween dramedy, Andi Mack.

Emphasis added.

A Boy With A Crush On A Boy — And For The Disney Channel, A First

Ten years from now, no one will really remember this but for the family friendly kid safe tween entertainment giant of Disney to have a boy talking of a crush on another boy? As if it were just another tween romance? Goodness, what if they kiss?

The right wing is loosing the culture war, bit by bit. They’ll continue to flail around and they’ll damage more than a few lives in the process. But in the end? We have a generation growing up that is winning the battle to liberate love. We’ll still have other battles to fight but, like tonight’s news of charges against the Trump crime family, we are moving forward and slowly winning the war of time.

Legally Trump’s pardoning power is nearly absolute. But if he uses it vs. this investigation it will hopefully cause serious political damage to Trump and the Republicans.

Aside from his legal troubles, Trump overpromised results during the campaign, and out-and-out lied to his base what he was going to do. All but the absolutely devoted see through his con: the wall is not going to built, jobs are not coming back by the millions, middle class people are not getting tax cuts, coal is still dead as an industry, health care is being destroyed not improved, and the president is clearly both stupid and mentally impaired. As long as the Republicans continue to stand by Trump, they risk having the undecided voters associate them with the Liar-in-Chief and voting Democrat in protest. But the Dems have to make that association clear. It’s that last part that worries me.

When we travel to my wife’s home town, we stop to see her parents tombstone, and right next to it, hers. Her mom bought one for her when she was in college. The chances of my wife being buried in her home town are near 0.

I think my folks think the same of me, though I will be honest, I would prefer to be buried with the bones of my ancestors back in fish country. Nevertheless, it always makes for an awkward conversation when my mom reminds me that there’s plenty of opportunity for me to move home with Mrs. Fish and the fishspawn.

Trump pardoning his cronies one after the other will eventually get so blatant as to turn the mainstream media decisively against Trump, with serious collateral damage to the whole Republican party.

That’s a big risk to take, since the Republicans rely heavily on the both-siderist shielding they get from the media.

And let’s remember, Mueller hired a specialist to research and handle pardons exclusively.

We won’t see the full scope of Mueller’s team’s investigation without the benefit of hindsight, but I think it will be seen as one of the most comprehensive investigations in this nation’s history.

Mueller covered all the bases. I still have faith in Rule of Law. This country is stronger than some fucking reality TV star.

The Trump cabal and Faux News have two days to go absolutely bug-shit crazy, attacking Mueller, Clinton, Obama, the Illuminati, the Trilateral Commission, Soros, The Elders of Zion, and space aliens.

Reading elsewhere my understanding is Mueller was appointed by the Justice Dept - in particular Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - because Sessions recused himself from the Russian investigations. I thought only the dept could fire him - currently Dep AG Rosenstein in particular. This relates back to Nixon firing his AG I think?

I could be 100% wrong.

Trump could order Mueller’s dismissal. But he would not be able to fire him directly unless he ordered the repeal of the special-counsel regulations adopted in 1999, according to Neal Katyal, the former acting solicitor general, who helped draft the regulations.
But that would be an “extravagant” move, Katyal wrote in a Washington Post column on May 19. If Trump wanted Mueller gone, it is more likely he would order Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to fire him.

For Trump to order Mueller’s firing with no good reason, then, “would be insane even by Trump-era standards,” Wright said. And it’s possible Rosenstein could refuse, meaning he would have to resign or Trump would have to fire him, which would create a situation eerily reminiscent of Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre.”

Any action Trump takes against Mueller will immediately be considered on par with the Saturday Night Massacre and puts Trump and everyone around him in a worse position - not better. It’s the kind of thing that Congress - even this compromised GOP controlled one - in a position that they would have to act to preserve their own power.

The obstruction of justice this would be detailing is simply something the GOP in Congress can’t avoid or ignore.

“But the Dems have to make that association clear. It’s that last part that worries me.”

That is the fatal flaw that I see. Never has a party been given more ammunition and not bothered to use it.

It pretty much doesn’t matter if the Democrats use it or not. What they say is controlled by the news networks, who will avoid reporting it if it looks too good for Democrats.
