We need to use these indictments, not to sit back an hope that things will be fixed, but to push to make changes so that people like Trump, Bannon, McConnell, and Ryan can never end up in power again. McConnell and Ryan will need to be dealt with by finally getting people to understand that Republicans don’t give a shit about them. To prevent the next Trump and Bannon we need to strengthen rules about who can run for office, things like all candidates must show tax returns.

“Trump suggests?” He called it a TOTAL BOMB - all caps. Why are you minimizing this?

It’s so disheartening to see the media tip-toe around what’s really going on with the malevolent toad in the White House.

How media should respond to Trump attacks

Lastly, call it like it is. When the President lies, use the word “lie.” Drop euphemisms like “casual relationship with the truth.” I know news media want to be respectful. But Trump has made that impossible. And he’s using euphemisms and indirect language to his advantage. It might be repetitive, but when Trump lies, say it. He lies.

bold is mine

have you guys heard this about paul ryan’s suicidal tendancies yet?

The National Association of Home Builders on Saturday accused House Speaker Paul Ryan of abruptly reversing course on a mortgage tax credit proposal and announced it would oppose the tax-reform proposal that GOP lawmakers expect to unveil on Wednesday.

The about-face by the housing-industry lobbying group strips Republicans of a powerful ally. Tax breaks for homeowners have long been one of the flashpoints of any attempt to rewrite the nation’s tax laws.

“All the resources we were going to put into supporting are now going to go into opposing the plan,” NAHB Chief Executive Officer Jerry Howard told POLITICO.

Tomorrow should be loads of fun, what with the White House and their chosen GOP mouthpieces trying (in face of indicts) to insist Mueller’s investigation is going nowhere, he needs to resign or Trump needs to fire him, and the “real” crimes rest with the Clintons.

Hell, don’t be surprised if the suggestion is floated tomorrow on live TV that Mueller may be indicting the Clintons.

“Multiple sources say Trump “completely lost his mind” after he found out Mueller’s filed charges & now he’s “having an epic meltdown” #AMJoy

I think they really thought that if they claimed the Mueller investigation was a huge nothingburger long enough, it would become a fact. They’re about to get a big dose of truth and facts, and their lies are going to be exposed. For someone like Trump who is accustomed to having others believe, push, and support every lie he utters, I suppose it is startling to discover at the age of 71 that there are others who will never buy your BS. I began to think the WH is in a state of panic when I began reading SBH’s tweets. She rarely tweets, so I got a sense of an “all hands on deck” atmosphere at the WH. Seeing Kellyanne Conway appearing on Fox and talking about the GDP and the “wonderful week” Trump has had reinforced the idea that there’s panic in the WH.

The focus of the White House’s efforts to kill the investigation of late have been “Nothing’s happening.” That Mueller running a tight ship and total information control could be spun in their favor as there being “no there there” and the whole thing a waste of time. Now? Now it’s going to be next to impossible to kill this without looking as though they have something to hide. And all that talk for weeks now about cutting funding to the investigation and “wrapping it up” before year’s end? Yeah, that’s over, the GOP now are going to realize that such talk is radioactive in light of indictments.

So it’s now been over a day since the indictments story dropped and The Gray Lady continues to act as if nothing happened. Their only story involving Mueller…is a puff piece about how Trump’s lawyers are advising White House staffers to cooperate with Mueller’s investigation because they’ve nothing to hide.

The “paper of record” whose legacy hire declared loudly on Twitter that Hillary Clinton is a liar…can’t be asked to report on something that could mean the end of the Trump presidency.

I honestly don’t believe it’s possible for the New York Times to dig themselves out of this hole. They went so hot and heavy for the Uranium One/Steele Dossier bullshit that they can’t take up the Mueller indictments without risking their “access” to the Court of Trump the First. I can only imagine their editorial board is holed up in a smoke-filled room, surrounded by stale coffee and take-out boxes, wondering how in the hell they’re going to “Both Sides” their way out of this mess.

They know this could be their last chance to push all their happiest dreams through, to get them passed and on the books before they lose their majorities, so they’re going to go whole hog on everything they can. So Ryan’s going to aim for destroying the middle class, Rohrabacher’s going to try to sell all the CIA’s files to Russia, Joe Barton will want to make it illegal to use wind energy, Steve King will try to pass a new slavery act, and Louis Gohmert will want to ban smart people.

It’s a fair question, what if he decides to go for Donny from the get-go? There’s numerous legal experts who agree there’s enough to sustain an obstruction of justice charge, and that’s just stuff in the public sphere. Who knows what Mueller has turned up that hasn’t been made public since this investigation started?

They just heard Fox tell them “anything from the dossier is inadmissible” and think they’ve got their “out” from Mueller’s sights. Damn. Five Prince debuts in one night.

Umphrey’s McGee are notorious for playing a cover once and then never playing it again. It’s happened with me. I saw them play The Doobie Brothers’ “Takin’ It To The Streets” in Boise, ID in 2011 (the day of the big earthquake and tsunami in Japan, actually) and they haven’t played that song since.

Companies have to protect their brands at all costs - going after individual shows is no longer going to cut it - make the pain felt at the companies bottom line - NOW!

A more patriotic costume would have been:
Lady Liberty
Betsy Ross
Abigail Adams
Dolly Madison
Martha Washington

Dressing up in red, white and blue is neither imaginative nor (necessarily) patriotic if you don’t understand the meaning of the word. In different circumstances, Tonni’s get-up would also appropriate for a guest appearance as a superhero on Supergirl or the beginning of a porn movie.

I decided to build a second Raspberry Pi box for controlling the lights we have for Halloween. This one is smaller than the first. I learned something I didn’t really want to learn, but I’m going to share it with you: If you know nothing about electronics, make sure you buy high level trigger relays.

The first box I build I guess uses high level relays. I wanted to go smaller, and so I picked a relay that looked useful. But when I tried to use it, it gave me all sorts of fits, and wouldn’t work properly, nothing would trigger on anything that made sense. I some cases, nothing would turn on, and then multiple would turn on with one command.

The fix, which I find annoying, was to attach a ground to the -5V input to the control side of the relay board. This ended up causing the lights to turn on when I said off, but at least they were consistent. Then I just flipped the value that got sent to the Raspberry Pi.

After Halloween, I’m going to find some more high trigger relays. Damn it, Jim, I’m a software engineer, not an electronics technician.

One of the most beloved traditions in 40k

WAAAGH!

Ork behaviour is dominated by the WAAAGH!, which is also the name given to the gestalt psychic field the Greenskins generate that affects the Ork psyche, which allows Orks to instinctively recognize who is “bigga”, and therefore who is in charge, since might makes right in Ork society. All Orks generate this field, and it grows stronger as the Orks enjoy themselves, generally while fighting, and as more of them congregate together in one geographical area. The WAAAGH! helps give momentum to the Orks’ planetary assault campaigns, which are also known as WAAAGHs! (the Orks like to call a lot of things WAAAGH!s). Such a WAAAGH! is a cross between a holy crusade and a pub crawl, with a bit of genocide thrown in for good measure. Thousands of Orks will gather together, drawn to the power of a single dominant Ork called a Warboss or Warlord if the WAAAGH! is particularly massive, who is bigger and more intelligent than the Orks around him. Then the Orks will set off to find an enemy to fight and defeat. Ork WAAAGHs! will sweep whole planetary systems away and destroy armies and fleets in tides of bloodlust and carnage, and only once the Orks have killed every available enemy will they start to fight amongst themselves again.

Looks like the cops in Istanbul averted what might’ve been a serious atrocity.

Istanbul police have foiled a major Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) bomb attack and brought down two jihadist cells in the city.

According to police, a car loaded with explosives and a bomb-laden motorcycle were found in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Istanbul’s Bayrampaşa district on Oct. 28.

Anti-terror police launched an operation after two consecutive explosions took place in two buildings in Istanbul’s Esenyurt and Arnavutköy districts, followed by fire, late on Oct. 27.

“Objects used in bomb making, including chemical materials, metal marbles, nails, a screw, a remote control, electronic circuits, cables, batteries and many other similar materials, were found in two houses in the Arnavutköy and Esenyurt districts by anti-terror and bomb disposal units, who carried out examinations after fire caused by explosions were put out. No one was found in the apartments,” police said in a written statement, adding that anti-terror police and intelligence officers launched coordinated efforts to apprehend those involved in the incident.

Authorities then determined that a car and a motorcycle belonging to the suspects linked to the aforementioned two addresses were in the parking lot of a shopping mall.

I’m sure it really is good, but for my money? My father’s grass finished Herfords. One, sometimes two a year (he’s 82 now after all) and I get maybe one or two steaks & roasts & a bit of burger each year. But those remain the finest I’ve ever had. Just keep the corn away from any beef you want to eat and that will do wonders in and of itself. Nasty stuff, corn is, it’s candy to a cow and makes them obese just like high fructose corn syrup does to humans.

I’ve had grass-fed beef that was very good, though not as tender as Kobe beef. My friend in Wyoming just let his herd forage on their own, and when there was snow cover he fed them other stuff. Pretty sure he did not feed them corn, being a kind of purist that way.

Journalists need to get Congress on the record - hold them accountable for their enabling Trump and his craven cronies. But journalists seem all too willing to turn a blind eye to all this.

The reckoning wont happen without the media focusing on the actual issues and exposing the sideshow nature of the Trump admin and their cultivation of an alt-reality via right wing media outlets that are spewing nonsensical ravings about the uranium deal and how Clinton will be thrown in prison (even before the indictments and convictions).

This entire worldview is divorced from reality and facts. Unhinged, unmoored, and dangerously devoid of coherence.

The PR utility PREPA has been mismanaged for ages, and that mismanagement has contributed to the infrastructure failing spectacularly in aftermath of Maria. However, rebuilding it shouldn’t take nearly as long as Trump thinks acceptable. That means more resources.

Whitefish doesn’t have those resources, and the more you look, the more you see that it’s a scam to personally profit from misfortune from others.

jumping in for a minute then jumping out again

Here’s a PRO TIP:

if you wake up and zero dark silly so you can run for two hours, and then have a list of outdoor chores, anything cooked in a crockpot is welcome.

today’s winner is chicken done my favorite way. put everything in the pot and turn it on:

3-4 lbs chicken legs, thighs, wings, etc
1 tsp or more grated ginger or spice blend
6 cloves garlic, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 c soy sauce or tamari
1 c spicy V8 or 1 c tomato juice + 1/4 tsp cayenne (or more)
1/2 c brown sugar
pepper to taste

there will also be a carrot cake because we realized we have too many carrots, so….

and now to weed whacking….

I will never step foot in a church again.

That’s too bad. I don’t know whether you’re a believer or not, but I can tell you that there are churches that are not like that. I grew up in one - though it didn’t take - and a couple of my siblings have found churches that are the polar opposite.

I’ve met a number of people over the years whose view of Christianity has been shaped by exposure to “Christians”, and it really bothers me that this is becoming the prevailing view, because those “Christians” are SO LOUD.

Of course, being atheist, I really don’t have a god in the fight. But I know it doesn’t have to be like this.

Oh look, another Trump sycophant/crony calls out Clinton Admin.

Yesterday, during an appearance on Fox News, former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski made a Freudian slip when he said “we should be focusing on the continued lies of the Clinton administration.” Well, it looks like ex-White House press secretary Ari Fleischer is suffering from the same issue.

in a panel discussion on Fox News Sunday this morning, the former Bush spokesperson tried to make the case that the Uranium One story that Fox News and conservatives have been pushing recently is worth looking into and isn’t just an attempt to distract from the Mueller investigation.

“Of course it’s worth looking at,” Fleischer told host Chris Wallace. “I think it raises more questions about the Clinton Foundation than the governmental process. I don’t know if the Uranium One deal is legit or not legit.”

Fleischer then shifted his attention to the notorious Trump/Russia dossier composed by former MI6 official Christopher Steels, bringing up the recent revelation that it was funded in part by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

These fuckers can’t help themselves. The hate is so ingrained that they know deep down that the entire Trump syndicate is illegitimate and they need to convince themselves and others by projecting Trump’s criminal acts and complicity on to their shared enemies (and the winner of the 2016 election popular vote).

As per JFK releases. It looks like the CIA helped cover up JFK after the fact to avoid nuclear war with the Soviet Union and cya. I can’t help but worry a little bit that something similar is going on now. The Russians got so far into the election was a sham. Long shot right? But still.

For every church you describe there are now 200 that are religious right propaganda centers where the Pulpit Pimp merely recites the latest Frank Luntz tested RepubliKKKlan Party talking points.

This is why millions of people have walked out of churches and they will NEVER go back. Hopefully that means that these propaganda centers are effectively marginalizing religion and putting it on the path to irrelevance and eventual demise.

RWC - I’ve been watching The Crown this weekend - thought of you watching the opening sequence.

The Crown - Main Title Sequence

It is a title sequence as resplendent as the royalty that follows. Shadowy glints of gold and molten metal curling from the darkness, at first menacing and slow, entwine to form a single, sinister crown. The opening credits of eagerly awaited royal drama The Crown, which arrived on Netflix this week, are undoubtedly an extravagant sequence, scored by Oscar-winning film composer Hans Zimmer and more than a minute long.

Recumbent bicycle has been delivered. Mr. w helped load it in our little pickup and did the driving. We were ready to go about a half hour early, I called the guy, and he said, ‘Let’s stick with the time we set yesterday. We’re at Denny’s now [the one that has only caught fire once since they opened a month ago] we’ll see you at the prearranged time.’ So we ran one errand and got there only 5 minutes early, unloaded, chatted with his exchange student from Spain, shook hands all around, got back in the truck and I asked Mr.w, ‘How’d I do?’ He said, ‘You did great handling that jerk…’ and quoted a few annoying things the guy said and commented on his Bernie bumper sticker. It was only then, when we were driving away, that I realized that this was the guy who came in a few days ago wearing the ‘Bernie 2020’ sweatshirt, who I made a point of being nice to anyway. It paid off.

Even if I am a little slow on the uptake.

There’s a new series from Germany getting rave reviews…..Babylon Berlin. It’s set in the twilight years of the Weimar Republic, when Berlin was perhaps the most spectacularly decadent city on the planet. It’s based on a series of novels by Volker Kutscher - the novels are set between 1929 - 1934.

Don’t know if it’s on Netflix or Amazon or anything….it’s being broadcast in Britain on SkyTV.

Trailer may be mildly NSFW, so in spoiler tag:

The significant problem here is that since the rise of the ‘Moral Majority’, there’s been a concerted campaign to ensure that the single ‘true’ Christianity in the country (and even the world) is the Protestant, Evangelical, most extreme conservative form of Christianity, and with the political power it’s amassed in the US especially, they’ve done a fucking bang-up job of getting themselves treated as the only game in town.

When I was an undergrad at Pitt in the 70s, we referred to them as KKKampus KKKrusaders for KKKrist because they endlessly pushed Falwell and Robertson’s RepubliKKKlan perversion at their every meeting. In my sophomore year, they booked almost all of the meeting halls for their propaganda rallies. This triggered a revolt in my Junior year when they were effectively shut out. Found some antique bicycles for you: api.atlasobscura.com

Last paragraph:

As a small privately run museum, it’s open throughout the summer, though it’s best to check (or better call) ahead of your visit. The museum is only open on weekends during the Spring and Autumn and closed from November to May.

I know what will happen, I’ll ride my bike all the way there, and they’ll be closed.

Charles Coughlin back in the 1930’s.

en.wikipedia.org

Grandma and Grandpa Bacon ran a boarding house in the 30’s. Grandma FORBADE anyone from tuning into Coughlin. Grandpa remembered picketing that asshole when he came into Ambridge to rally against the Steelworkers Union Organizing Committee. Grandpa and his fellow CIO comrades heckled Coughlin so much they shut him down!

He’s losing white voters - if the “white voters without college degree” dips down to 40% or less, he’s in serious shit.

I wonder if the GOP will decide to dispense with him at that point….it could cripple their mid-term game.

I got a nice big dent in my front panel from a massive rock on my last long freeway trip.

Bullshit.

Because I drive so much on gravel roads & highways, I have to replace my windshield every couple of years. Even when they don’t crack they get pitted so much I can’t see when I’m headed into the sun.

Check with your insurance. I had a hissy fit when I had a crack. Called the insurance company and it was only 50 bucks (Geico in CA). It’s considered a safety feature.

Yup - check your insurance though, per Iwouldprefernot…they should waive deductible/or reduce it.

Since I started working from home, I had a pristine 2 yr old car with 6K miles.

Then I drove to Pasadena.

So, 140 grams for $350, eh?

So a pound is 454 grams. 140 grams is 3.25 oz. That makes that beef worth $1,092.50/lb.

Kobe beef is good, but I agree that it’s a bit overpriced. We have a French butcher in San Francisco that does long dry aging. You can order 100, 200 day dry aged Cote de Boeuf…it ain’t cheap, but it isn’t $1,000 a lb. ($75 or so). And it’s pretty fucking good. Nice for a special Xmas dinner with a couple of people.

re: #314 Blind Frog Belly White

The Dems really have a much better economic policy - one based on stuff that actually works - but I’m afraid we’ll get bogged down in stupid horseshit like donations and Single Payer Now!!!, when the immediate concern is preserving what we have. Plus there’s the basic problem that a strictly economic message leaves key Dem constituencies poorly served - a rising tide lifts white boats first, and Boats of Color last, so when the tide turns, the BoCs sink first.

Without being to pedantic
Tide is the wrong metaphor because it is more or less uniform…all boats go up or down the same amount no matter how big they are

The economy is an unfair tide lifting some boats more and some less based on their size

This doesn’t even get into that fact that other boats (or the tide Masters) are actively and aggressively trying to sink yours
