Lyrics:

when every wind is an afterlife out here
what language do you dream in when you’re drunk?
and feel just like a map of where you’ve been
and all the smoke and mirrors you’ve hung

if only this one held the answer to the aching of our hearts

a little drop of poison in the rain
a little drop of madness in my heart
it’s nothing but now nothing is in it’s way
look nervously at things that come apart

if only this one held the answer to
our loneliness and all

through days we love through days we disappear
to go for all the things behind a cloud
I’m a stranger now
and where will I undress to disappear
to go for all the things I’m here to find
I’m a stranger now

from ocean to the valley to the skin
I mumble to myself and miss your call
I run around but look for you within
the little stir of hope into it all

If only this one held the answer to the loneliness and all

through days we love through days we disappear
to go for all the things behind a cloud
I’m a stranger now
and where will I undress to disappear
to go for all the things I’m here to find
I’m a stranger now

a little drop of madness in the rain
a little drop of madness in my heart
it’s nothing but will nothing grow away
look nervously at things that come apart

if only this one held the answer to
our loneliness and all

through days we love through days we disappear
to go for all the things behind a cloud
we are strangers now
and where will we undress to disappear
to go for all the things we’re here to find
we are strangers now

So I’ve been a member on a writing website for over 18 years, and every year, I run a Halloween writing quest during the whole month of October. People get to write fiction, poetry, factual stuff, whatever they want to, as long as it’s related to Halloween. I’ve been wanting to write one more piece before the end of the month, and I’d hit on the idea of writing up Val Lewton, producer of horror films like Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie, The Seventh Victim, etc. I spent two days writing up his biography, went to post it — and discovered I’d already written him up 15 years ago. :(

So now I’m trying to bash out some goddamn horror doggerel to make up for my errors.

Are we sure that Mueller is going to let indictments drop tomorrow? Has he given any indication? As far as I can tell, it’s all “maybe he will” but he’s said nothing.

I got sidetracked by this article on the front page when I went over to the WaPo to try and get an answer to this question:

Rod Dreher is the combative, oversharing blogger who speaks for today’s beleaguered Christians

washingtonpost.com

And I’m thinking, “Really? Really? You guys are giving space to a guy who is flatly and firmly anti-LGBT without putting it fucking up front in the article? Hello?”

Fair point, the best we’ve heard is “as early as Monday,” indicating that we still might be waiting a day or two. But the fact that he’s filed means the arrests are coming. Question is do we get perp walks or will he allow them to surrender.

The Older Boy and I were discussing this. We decided to actively reduce our expectations. That way it’s more likely to be a pleasant surprise.

The thing about Andrew Laufer Esq. ( tweet on last thread) is he is kind of part of the Schindler/Mench orbit. I’m concerned he’s getting ahead of himself.

I’m not getting my hopes sky high, but I am fairly sure that he’s not going to be grabbing some guy off the street. It’s going to be somebody from the Trump inner circle and that will get the ball rolling. Either because they’ll roll, or Trump will be stupid enough to do something that will be the “bridge too far” for voters.

My best recommendation would be to assume that the very first arrests are going to be for charges on which Mueller feels confident he can get an easy conviction. Which probably means financial shenanigans or false statements (i.e. lying to the FBI). The expectation being that he’ll work his way up the food chain.

I got my Halloween lights working on my two Raspberry Pi boxes. The boxes, in turn, are being controlled from the computer I’m talking to you on. I have successfully reduced Halloween lights to a programming problem. Now, I have some Python code that causes the lights to do various sequences. I run the program, walk outside, check to see how aesthetically appealing it looks, run inside and make some tweaks, and run back out to see how it looks.

Democrats don’t need to rely on these to fix things, because even if Trump is brought down, it still won’t fix the Republican party. Use any of these to show the corruption in the party, the propaganda outfit that Fox is part of, and that there is only one party that is truly looking out for the country.

They’re ‘beleaguered’ because we no longer officially hate the people they hate, because they no longer get to use the power of the state to punish people for having sex they don’t approve of.

No matter how great or small, it’s progress, and that is a Good Thing (tm).

On that subject, Mrs. Fish spent last weekend with her most progressive sister and sister-in-law. They universally agreed, together, that the Trump Administration has set us back decades of cultural progress for equal rights. I really can’t agree more with them.

You know, there’s something to that. As mentioned, I grew up in some extremely conservative churches. The major theme was that people had value only as much as they could provide to the local church. It gave us an easy way to dismiss other people as “less than us” if they weren’t able to be as involved in Churchianity as us affluent white people.

Halloween Light Test 2017

We have a bunch of figures we will put out on Tuesday if it doesn’t rain. In the arch on the right contains a ghost bride and a groom holding his head with a skeleton preacher. To the left of them toward the back is going to be a casket with a body, a widow standing behind it, and three skeletons around it. The green lit area is a cemetery. The blinking arch on the left has a ghost hanging from it that spins and a sign that says Mausoleum. In front of that will be three witches, one of which stirs a cauldron. To the left of those is a mad scientist with a lab cart containing body parts, with a skeleton hanging behind it. Where you see those white blinking lights to the right of the left arch, is an arch covered in a black tarp leading to the door of the house. Inside we have a number of lights, and things hanging from the top that will move up and down making noises.

Inside our house, we have the front room decorated as an attic, with a number of spooky things in it. On Tuesday, we’ll have a blue colored light and some strobe lights to light this up:

Attic

Edit: The lights in front are on some amazing fence building my dad did out of PVC and wood.

One of the cool things about reducing it to a programming problem was that I decided after getting it all set up was that we needed some more lights toward the back. We laid out some lights, plugged them into one of the outlets on my raspberry pi box, I modified a configuration file, and restarted.

Now that I’ve built the boxes, and contemplating having four light boxes, we’ll actually need to do some actual planning on what to put in our yard.

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) once pinned former Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) against a wall and held a knife to his throat during a heated debate about earmarks.

John Boehner told Politico about the incident in a new profile published Sunday. The former speaker described his difficulties in banning earmarks, or measures that funded projects in lawmaker’s home district.

Boehner said that Young once pinned him against a wall in the House during an argument over earmarks, and that Young held a 10-inch knife to Boehner’s throat.
Boehner responded by staring Young in the eyes and saying, “F—- you.”

I am not so optimistic. Despite everything, Trump retains support of over 80% of Republican voters and the cowards in Congress will not turn against him. Those I know who support him continue to do so; it is only if Fox News and the WSJ editorial page turn against Trump, that we will be able to be rid of him. But Pence, although not the foreign policy risk of Trump, will be even worse when it comes to domestic issues.

It was a classic. This series is a classic. This is why people love baseball. No time limits, no penalties (well, very rarely), and a guy who succeeds 30% of the time is a huge success.

It will always be my favorite sport. I’ve never seen my favorite team- Orioles in a WS but every March I have high hopes. This is such a beautiful game. A real pity someone had to lose tonight but I’m glad Houston won. A deserving city and fan base.

You bring up an interesting point (bolded), and it leads to an intriguing question:

The R’s legislative agenda is now totally focused on taxes, and cuts for the wealthy. They fear for their election funding in the next cycle if they don’t get it through. They fear Bannon’s agenda to kick out existing Congresscritters and replacing them with new Alt-right hardcores. They are at a desperate point. There are also some critical fractures in their bloc with people who can read and write and do maths and understand what the tax cuts will do to their constituents.

What will the indictments do to the the R’s legislative agenda? Does it give them cover, or does it smash it to pieces by putting DC into a paralysis where nothing can be done in the House until Mueller’s job is finished?

For a political junkie like me, this is a sweet time to be alive. It’s chaos, but it might kill the Republican Party, depending on how it plays out.

I’d love to know how exactly Christians are “beleaguered” in a country which is dominated by (Rightwing) Christians. White Evangelicals gave us Trump.

It is based on the founding myth of our nation, namely that the Pilgrims came here to practice religious freedom.

They came here because they were “free” to impose their religion on people and create a theocratic government, something that was forbidden in Europe.

That’s the thing . Chickenhawks are chickenhawks, a small subset of the gay (and heterosexual) community. Whether they be Priests, or Boy Scout leaders, or Christian Youth Ministers, pedophiles are pedophiles. That’s their kink. But within that group, there are further subsets.

I had a good friend in college who was a chickenhawk. The difference with M was that he never preyed. He was well to do, respected in the community, and renowned in his field of work. There was a certain group of street kids in New Orleans who knew his kink and acted on it, for money.

He did federal time. Was he a predator? Maybe, in a legal sense. Was he a victim? Maybe, in a legal sense. The one one undeniable fact was that it was consensual, despite the fact that they were sixteen and seventeen. He never preyed on little virgin boys, didn’t groom children.

Sexuality is a strange beast. My kink is that I’m a heterosexual male, like most men. It’s a difficult thing for me to condemn anyone who is not a predator or rapist, even if I have reservations about consensual sex between people of differing ages.

It’s a puzzlement.

I absolutely agree with that, but it is a kink in the sexuality of the harasser, isn’t it? It’s a pathology.

And I condemn no-shit pedophelia, where the the child is an absolute victim to a predator who targets them to achieve sexual domination as an extension of power over another human. It’s anathema and the animals who commit such crimes should be put in a cage for the rest of their lives.

Of 342 immigrants deported out of New Mexico, none had gang involvement. 88% had no criminal record.

The counter-argument is that that they were here illegally and hence criminals.

The USA needs comprehensive immigration reform, not just deportations and wall building.

But that is not likely: too many conflicting interests.

Europe faces an analogous problem: as long as EU has a common external border, but separate national refugee and immigration policies, it will be a complete clusterf*ck of conflicting laws and regulations, and a breeding ground for nationalist sentiment.

And what is the lead story over at the BBC?

Concentrations of CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere surged to a record high in 2016, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Last year’s increase was 50% higher than the average of the past 10 years.

Researchers say a combination of human activities and the El Niño weather phenomenon drove CO2 to a level not seen in 800,000 years.

Scientists say this risks making global temperature targets largely unattainable.

Paul Manafort, Who Once Ran Trump Campaign, Told to Surrender

WASHINGTON — Paul Manafort and his former business associate Rick Gates were told to surrender to federal authorities Monday morning, the first charges in a special counsel investigation, according to a person involved in the case.

The charges against Mr. Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, and Mr. Gates, a business associate of Mr. Manafort, were not immediately clear but represent a significant escalation in a special counsel investigation that has cast a shadow over the president’s first year in office.

Mr. Gates is a longtime protégé and junior partner of Mr. Manafort. His name appears on documents linked to companies that Mr. Manafort’s firm set up in Cyprus to receive payments from politicians and businesspeople in Eastern Europe, records reviewed by The New York Times show.

Mr. Manafort had been under investigation for violations of federal tax law, money laundering and whether he appropriately disclosed his foreign lobbying.

And of course there are already Trumpbots on Twitter proclaiming that this is so, and that Trump is not under investigation.

But they have no idea about that. Has there ever been an investigation that had fewer leaks than Mueller’s inquiry?

Saying conspiracy against the US is no big whup and issuing a pardon is definitely not going to be a good look for Trump. It won’t stop him, but it won’t make him look good — except to the Republicans and the press, who will immediately forgive him and demand Hillary be arrested to make up for it.

These principles include the fact that regardless of its statutory setting, every conspiracy has at
least two elements: (1) an agreement (2) between two or more persons.14 Members of the
conspiracy are also liable for the foreseeable crimes of their fellows committed in furtherance of
the common plot.15 Moreover, statements by one conspirator are admissible evidence against all.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. We got our power back after a short outage here, and there’s lots of folks in CT, NY, and New England who have lost power due to the Nor’easter, but they’ll get it back pretty quick.

Millions of Americans in Puerto Rico are still without power thanks to Hurricane Maria more than a month ago, and Trump still isn’t doing nearly enough to get the power restored.

He’s too busy tweeted at Hillary Clinton to notice that he’s the one in charge, and it’s his people who have been indicted.

Yeah, it’s #MuellerMonday and we are treated to a daily double: Paul Manafort and Rick Gates.

Okay, who had Gates on their indictment bingo cards? No one?

Here’s where it gets interesting. Manafort was one of Trump’s campaign managers, and then Gates took over as unofficial campaign manager at the beginning of the summer - right about the time of the infamous Russia meeting at Trump Tower with Junior, Manafort, etc. that all of them lied about.

Gates is a guy who’s trying to follow in Manafort’s footsteps, but doesn’t necessarily have the savvy to know how to navigate nearly as smoothly. Including him at this point is further pressure to get Manafort to cooperate.

Manafort cooperates, and it’s a domino theory that will end up going after Kushner, Junior, and others at the Russia meeting. Tax and financial crimes are all wrapped into this.

So of course Fox is treating their viewers to the nonstop Clinton calvacade as though she’s the one who’s about to get indicted. Fox has taken over the HA Goodman approach of warning of Clinton indictments around the corner.

They’re fixated on Clinton but ignore everything coming Trump’s way. It’s a blind spot that actively misinforms their viewers.

Can’t wait for Hannity to spin this tonight.

Manafort and Trump go back decades. They’ve been friends for decades. This isn’t some casual relationship. Manafort was Trump’s campaign manager, and even after Manafort left the campaign, it was clear Manafort was still involved in some capacity advising Trump. All the emails, messages, and Tweets can and will be used against the whole lot of them.

Not a bad way to start a Monday.

Conspiracy means others were involved, and the question becomes who else was in on it.

Fastest admin to indictments by a special counsel ever.
Fastest to multiple indictments by special counsel.

And these aren’t just financial crimes, but conspiracy against the United States and violating Foreign Agents Registration Unit (FARA).

Trump’s morning was spent bitching about Clinton. Fox spent the morning indulging Trump’s fetish about Clinton.

Then Fox started looking at what specifically was in the indictment and went… oh fuck.

Shit just got real for them too. Of course they’ll play it off as though they’re the ones who got duped by Trump and these aren’t real GOPers (even though the GOP voted for Trump wholeheartedly and continue enabling his corrupt regime). It’s what the GOP does.

I see no way that this conspiracy charge doesn’t reach anyone who was in the room for that meeting. Junior, Kushner, Goldstone.

Plenty of dim bulbs who think they’re clever. They’ll end up burying themselves.

re: #457 dangerman

the infamous Russia meeting at Trump Tower with Junior, Manafort, etc. that all of them lied about.

She’s delusional. I wouldn’t even respond to her foolishness. She’s gone and not living in the real world.

She’s so far out she passed both Voyagers and Pioneer 11 in the Oort Cloud!

As if they were stray cats who just wandered off the street and Trump didn’t have the heart to kick them out into the cold.

Glad to see they indicted Manafort and Gates. This is the end of the beginning; I have little doubt more indictments will follow, with names we’ve all become quite familiar with in the Trump administration.

In any event, this is me right now. Image: qZDZZAt.gif

Christ, Kevin Spacey.

STFU

How much has he harmed the gay community today with his selfishness. Oh, with one little statement and confession he’s fed into all of the stereotypes that many people have about gays. 1) They are pedophiles. 2) It’s a choice. “I have had relationships with both men and women…. I choose now to live as a gay man.”

Last thing I want to hear is Boehner lecturing anyone on anything.

Seriously, he was just as responsible. He might have made nice with Obama behind the scenes, but he allowed what happened under his watch to happen without out and out saying what he just said.

And then he left, just like Flake and Corker and all the other republicans who suddenly decided to spend more time with their families.

There is no way Manafort’s man Pence isn’t caught up in this. President Ryan? It may rub off on him too, especially if Manafort is shown to have been passing out Russian sourced cash and favors.

So I click on the Facebook News tag about Manafort, and almost all the fed posts to me are by Trumpers going on and on about Hillary.

Facebook has a problem that not only will they not correct, they love it, because like Murdoch they make their money by having people in a bubble.

Facebook was designed to create bubbles.

Friendly reminder: Manafort tricked Trump into picking Pence for VP.

Ain’t nobody clean in this. The only remaining question is who’s gonna give up whom?
