CNN: Trump Had to Be Stopped From Lashing Out at Robert Mueller

Politics • Views: 38,621

According to CNN, as the news broke yesterday morning Donald Trump went into a white-hot fury and had to be restrained from lashing out at Robert Mueller on Twitter.

Washington (CNN)The dramatic intensification of the Russia investigation on Monday reignited President Donald Trump’s fury at the controversy clouding his presidency, prompting his aides to urgently advise him against lashing out at special counsel Robert Mueller as they work to revive a halting policy agenda.

Watching the developments unfold on the large television screens installed in his private residence, Trump was “seething,” according to a Republican close to the White House.

Seething is good.

McConnell and Ryan just have to know that their legislative agenda is stuck in neutral. Nothing is going to get done while this shit show is playing out. Mueller seems to have five more indictments in his pocket. If he dribbles them out one every two business days, it’ll take us through next Friday.

Which would be glorious, because every indictment is going to get closer and closer to Trump’s kids. Let’s face it, Trump the Lesser and Kushner admittedly engaged a hostile foreign power to receive information to affect an American election.

Hey, Lawhawk, isn’t that pretty much what the definition of a conspiracy is?

Trick or treating is on at Chez Tumbleweed …

Ranchers from the surrounding area bring their children into the village for trick or treating, as that’s kind of tough to do when the nearest house is two miles away. As such, we get a lot more children than live in town.

Whichever marketing guru came up with the phrase “fun sized” for half-bite candies should be horsewhipped. (We give out real candy bars, which makes us a popular stop.)

Schools in Kimball were closed today over an armed man escaping after a high-speed chase on I-80 in the early hours this morning. He has not been captured.

Trick or treating in Kimball is going on though, you try to tell your kids that you can’t shake down the neighbourhood for candy.

I pretty much feel that way about working for the Federal government, or even the military. To serve under Trump is not going to be a good thing, at least for those at the top of the scales.

And probably for a lot of people at the bottom, too. Notice how Trump through Executive action scaled down the annual cost of living adjustment.

The 2018 COLA (Cost-of-Living Adjustments) increase is 2.0% according to the U.S. government. COLA is based on the percentage increase of the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers for the third quarter of this year. The 2.0 percent increase in the cost-of-living adjustment is about a $25 monthly benefit increase for the average retiree, or about $300 per year.

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma caused a lot of damage and hardship but may have also contributed to the highest increase since 2012 through higher gas prices and other increased costs due to the storms.

The 2017 COLA (Cost-of-Living Adjustments) increase was just 0.3%. COLA impacts benefits to about 61 million social security recipients, 1.96 million military retirees and 4 million disabled veterans and 8 million SSI beneficiaries.

Let’s be clear about this. By ‘lashing out’, we mean ‘ending the rule of law in the United States’.

That’s what this really means. If Trump were to declare the investigation over, pardon everyone so far indicted, and forbid any further examination of the facts, that is simply stating that he and his ilk are above the law, and that they are free to commit crimes with impunity. Assuming that the nation goes along with this, he would then be free to arrest Hillary Clinton, Obama, and any other prominent dissidents, put on show trials, and stamp out any further dissent, and the nation would wring their hands on the national media stage and then agree quietly.

By ‘restraining’ him, White House officials are simply not yet ready to declare the end of the rule of law in the United States. They have grown up in a democracy and haven’t really thought through the consequences if that were to end around them.

Bannon disagrees - he thinks it’s time. He has looked out upon the national scene from Breitbart and calculated that 30-40% of the American people are ready to embrace dictatorship, and that the most powerful entities in the US - the governing party, the mainstream media, and the wealthiest individuals - are either enthusiastic supporters or sufficiently under control that they will acquiesce. One well timed phone call, one order from an unstable and demented sociopath, and we will see if he’s right.

Thanks.

Trump’s proposed budget, as far as federal employees and retirees, will probably be what Congress goes for, given Ryan et. al.

See also here:

Retiree COLA trumps employee pay raise

The problem for the active employees (not retirees) is that Trump’s budget calls for only 1.4% (save for a few cities where it will be 1.9%) increase this year, which isn’t close to what inflation is doing.

Trump almost certainly doesn’t care about the employees under him, and most Republicans in Congress are openly hostile to federal employees.

The article notes the COLA proposed for this year is considerably higher than years past. That said, the chicanery being floated would screw it up for years into the future.

That said, COLA has pretty much been a sore point ever since it’s been used, regardless of Democratic or Republican administrations. For Libertarians, they note the problem of tax bracket creep, in which COLA can push you into a higher marginal tax bracket but the brackets themselves aren’t indexed to inflation (thus their solution is a flat tax, rather than indexing the tax brackets to inflation as well).

Local stuff: Volunteers turned up to harvest six hundred acres of soybeans for the widow of a man killed in a motorcycle accident in August.

starherald.com

[Joe] Penny died in a motorcycle accident in August, so neighbors, friends and relatives banded together last week to harvest more than 600 acres of his soybeans near Decatur, Nebraska.

“It was so moving,” said Jenny Penny, his daughter. “It really brought home how much Dad meant to people that they would take their time from their family (farm) operation and come harvest dad’s crop.”

She said it would have taken her family more than a week to harvest those acres on its own. It took the group less than a day.

More than three dozen people turned out to help. Along with the combines, equipment included five auger-wagons and 20 semitrailer trucks.

A local grain elevator company provided free food for all of the helpers.

re: #68 Anymouse 🌹

The article notes the COLA proposed for this year is considerably higher than years past. That said, the chicanery being floated would screw it up for years into the future.

That said, COLA has pretty much been a sore point ever since it’s been used, regardless of Democratic or Republican administrations. For Libertarians, they note the problem of tax bracket creep, in which COLA can push you into a higher marginal tax bracket but the brackets themselves aren’t indexed to inflation (thus their solution is a flat tax, rather than indexing the tax brackets to inflation as well).

The brackets themselves actually are indexed to inflation. There may be issues about the details of how that calculation is done by the IRS, but as always anti-tax talking points long outlive the reality. IIRC requiring indexing of the tax brackets to inflation was a major point of one of the Reagan era tax changes.

That goes back to my Sept. 13 Letter to the Editor of the Scottsbluff (NE) Star-Herald, where I urged rejection of Mr. Clovis when he was first advanced.

starherald.com

To the Editor:

President Trump has nominated right-wing radio host Sam Clovis to be chief scientist at the USDA. Mr. Clovis has no education in either agriculture or science.

The Democratic Party has called on Mr. Trump to withdraw Mr. Clovis’s nomination, because he is wildly unqualified for the position.

Anyone who works in agriculture should be concerned about such a person in that position, regardless of political leanings. Our senators should come out against Mr. Clovis, as Nebraska needs qualified people to support and oversee our state’s most important industry, not a radio conspiracy theorist.

It’s a constant fight to retain the social/economic gains made in the name of socialism even in SK. The province has leaned right for the past 30 yrs in the rural areas, & Regina has been invaded by AB conservatives since oil has become our big economic driver.

We also have a small but vocal group of pro-life assholes who hold gatherings so they can yell at people. I’m sorry you had to go through that shit.

re: #175 Anymouse 🌹

I can skip the “revolution” part and try to hang on to the (little) socialism we have already (Social Security, the VA, &c).

You’re forgetting some fairly large groups (although they’ll never admit to being socialist): the cops and firemen in most cities, and of course all of the armed services. All facilities and equipment government-owned, all personnel government-paid, etc. This is why it always kills me when somebody on a talk show or whatever says, “I’m retired military, and I didn’t serve to turn our great country over to the soshlusts.”
