I see that Cheeto is doing his part to help revive Japanese militarism. That worked out so well last time.

A thought on the idea that the far left can do to the Democratic party what the Tea Party did to the right. A big reason the Tea Party could get away with it is that if they failed to win an election, the Democratic party would still be supporting blacks, but it would also make sure to keep Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security in place. On the other hand, the Democrats losing means that all of those programs, and countless other things such as the environment, will be destroyed.

It sucks, sometimes, being the adult. But we have to none the less.

I have an idea for a story: We’ve developed the technology of time travel to the point that we can use machines to make all 24 strips from near the north pole of the earth to the south pole be exactly at the same time. I’m trying to work out some kind of kink that throws things into disarray.

The only benefit I’d probably see from a re-militarization of Japan is if they retake the Sakhalin Island and Kuril Islands from the Russians again.

Then again, I only say that since Japan could govern those places better than the Russians could.

So Drumpf lands in Japan and it’s morning. His team gives him his itinerary and he asks why it’s November 5th, “I wanted to celebrate the beautiful day I was elected while I was in Japan!”, he said petulantly.

One of his staff told him they had crossed the International Date Line. :”What?”, asked Drumpf, “What day is it in Washington right now?”

“It’s November 4th, sir.”

Drumpf whips out his I-phone and calls his eldest son, who picks up on the first ring. “Hello?”.

“Donny Jr., it’s me, The President, and I just want you to know that I’m calling you…from the future!”

The biggest kink is going to be that travel across time zones is going to make duplicates of yourself. If you take a trip across three time zones, you’ll have two duplicates, and they could both appear before you even began your trip.

Mueller was an officer in the USMC.
That’s a Private, or Private First Class (depends on date the pic was taken) in the US Army’s 25 infantry Division

Dang, I was just thinking some more about this, and it shows promise for Great Madness.

Your flight is leaving at leaving at 10:30 p.m., and you’ll be traveling from NYC to Albuquerque — Eastern to Central to Mountain time, taking one hour to cross each time zone. You’re waiting to board at 10. You’re told that the flight you’re about to board has just appeared in Central Time after 30 minutes in the air — you send text messages to yourself, tee hee, you’re talking to yourself, get the sports scores.

You do not receive a text message from yourself from the Mountain Time Zone. In fact, your plane has not arrived in the Mountain Time Zone. Eastern-You and Central-You learn that. Neither of you have any idea why.

Do you get on the plane? Does time make you get on the plane? If you refuse to board, what happens to Central-You? Do they land the plane, thus causing Mountain-You not to appear because they landed early? Or did Mountain-You die in a plane crash which has now been averted, leaving duplicates of everyone on the plane?

I figured there would be crossing zones that you would have to go through to go from one zone to the other. And one kink would involve bypassing one of those which would generate an issue you described. I was trying to also work out a way to kill someone in an earlier time zone such that it changed the history of a future time zone: Say you’re talking to someone in an earlier time zone but they were then killed before you could talk to them. Your idea would be a great way to make it a mystery.

Because of MSNBC, my dad knows the name Pussy Riot. It was kind of funny listening to him say it. It also helped me segue into making him understand that kneeling as a form of protest is a good thing because I told him how is it any different than what the band was arrested for.

You might also note the new law in China that makes any disrespect of the national anthem a crime. If we had such a law in the USA, all the kneelers would be in jail, facing prosecution. The First Amendment, however, protects us from that.

I haven’t ridden Amtrak since 1973 (Was it even Amtrak back then?). Do they still have dining cars? I’ve ridden trains in the UK in recent years, and they don’t have dining cars, but do have canteens, where you can buy a sandwich, a drink or a beer, a salad, &c.

They are also seriously expensive. A train from Edinburgh to the unfortunately named village of Leighton Buzzard where my wife’s sister lives was around 150 pounds apiece (EasyJet would have been forty apiece), but then again we had little choice as the ashes of the cremated Icelandic economy were spewed all over Europe in a volcanic eruption that shut down the continent’s air traffic.

I’ve taken Amtrak several times to visit parents, and the line I’m on, which is definitely one of the less full-featured lines, has both a cafe car (for mostly snacks and drinks), and a proper dining car. They use the same car layout, but one is laid out with proper dining tables and menus for lunch/dinner service.

Hi! Y’all got a break from me because my whole village’s Internet service was out since Thursday. It died when I tried to download Microsoft Office 2016. (Too many bits to my town and that killed the whole Internet here.) I just came back up a couple hours ago and got Microsoft to reset my download so I could do it again.

We also (finally) got our chlorine pumps in the mail today, so tomorrow I will go install a new one.

Regarding Saudi Arabia, it’s interesting to note that Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal is the owner of the Kingdom Holding Group and has a rather sizeable stake in FNC. If I’m not mistaken, he’s also the largest shareholder in Citigroup.

Something’s up in the KSA. Looked at in view of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s recent liberalization* drive, I can’t help but wonder if that may be part of what’s driving this. Getting any potential rivals or opponents out of the way.

*liberalization - your mileage may vary, but in the context of Saudi Arabia, yes, it’s liberalization.

re: #86 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

No argument but around here a number of folks run with this ‘get rid of Twitter’ stuff as if that encapsulates the issues at all.

I suppose if the argument was extended to ‘get rid of this site, and this one, and this one, and this one’ it might present more accurately as the complicated and problematic situation it really is. Nobody does that for some reason. Advocate for regulation or something but kill this platform or target this platform just doesn’t wash to me.

re: #88 JordanRules

I do not advocate getting rid of anything, social media sites are useful for certain purposes, it just speaks volumes about the level of education and awareness in our country that people rely on them as a source of news on politics and world events, and even worse, that mainstream news sites have made “trending on Twitter” into a regular news item.

re: #89 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I suppose your attention to Twitter here makes sense since it has a heavy presence here at LGF. I don’t want to let Zuckerberg and others off the hook though if we’re going there with those types of statements. And the media was problematic before that. For example, they had the same coverage issues with Hillary way before these sites existed and we had a populace ready to lap it up then too.

Twitter is unavoidable, and yes, it is heavily present here.

Problem is, we still have people who think that news is the “product” and we are the “consumers”. The broadcast media make their money by selling advertising time. The content they provide is just window dressing to attract viewers and make that advertising time more attractive to their customers, the advertisers.

In that sense, Rush Limbaugh is a highly successful businessman: he has a core demographic nailed down, and if you want to address a target group of angry white Middle Americans, then he is the place to go.

“Alt right” provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos was fired by conservative website The Daily Caller after publishing a single column on the site’s opinion page, said The Hill on Saturday.

The Hill also confirmed on Saturday evening that The Daily Caller fired opinion editor Rob Mariani for his role in bringing the embattled Yiannopoulos on board.

Yiannopoulos announced on his Facebook page Saturday — he is banned for life from Twitter for his role in racist harassment campaigns and other trolling — that he was fired from a position at the Caller as a weekly columnist.

So, this came across my Facebook feed… Shared it there, and thought I might as well share here…
Sexual Assault Perpetrators’ Justifications for Their Actions: Relationships to Rape Supportive Attitudes, Incident Characteristics, and Future Perpetration

Perpetrators use rape supportive attitudes and sexual assault incident characteristics to justify forcing sex on their victims. Perpetrators who can justify their behaviors are at increased risk for future perpetration. This study examined the relationships between rape supportive attitudes, sexual assault incident characteristics, and the post-assault justifications of 183 men sampled from the community who self-reported committing at least one act of sexual aggression. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that rape supportive attitudes, expectations for having sex, misperceptions of sexual intent, victims’ alcohol consumption, attempts to be alone with her, and the number of consensual sexual activities prior to the unwanted sex were significant predictors of perpetrators’ post-assault use of justifications. Greater use of justifications was a significant predictor of sexual aggression over a 1-year follow-up interval. These findings demonstrate the need for further research exploring when and why perpetrators use post-assault justifications and whether they are amenable to change.

Jared hopes. He seems to be in very big trouble, on two or three fronts: He is desperate for cash to bail the family out of his terrible decision on the 666 [hah!] Fifth Ave project; Mueller is clearly all over him; and his father-in-law is mad at him. The pressure is so intense that I suspect we may actually find out what the hell he was doing in Saudi Arabia last week, and Japan this week, and … oh well, his daddy went to jail and Jared may well follow.

Austin, Amtrak still has dining cards on their long routes. The Coast Starlight is the only train left that also has parlor cars. Here’s the Dining Car menu for the Coast Starlight. They will also have daily specials not on the menu…

Of course all Republicans are now Donald Trump. Remember last year when in our fantasyland we talked about Trump being the end of the Republican Party. Well, it turns out we were right about that but wrong about everything else.

There is no Republican Party any more. There is only the Trump Party, or the White Supremacist Party, and it is stronger than ever.

The party that did end up being destroyed turned out to be the Democrats. It splintered into dozens of pieces, all at war with each other, and all fixated on reliving the 2016 election with a bunch of what-ifs instead of forming a unified strategy over how to attack the Trump Party.

Well we’ve got the Bernies against the Hillarys. We’ve got the Donnas against everybody, and all the Dems seem to want to talk about which Dem group was responsible for losing the election.

We’ve got the Dem candidate in Alabama down 17 points from the religious lunatic Roy Moore. We’ve got the increasingly ineffective 85 year old Dianne Feinstein refusing to step down to allow a younger Dem to take her seat. The top three Dems in the House are all over 70 years old.

Elizabeth Warren just destroyed her future by joining in on the Donna Brazile attack.

No one other than Ted Lieu can be bothered to directly attack Trumpism and no one in the Dems has a clue about how to confront and defeat it.

So yeah, I’d say the Dems are in disarray, certainly on the Federal level.

It was evident from day one that everyone in Trump’s orbit was damaged goods. From Devos and know nothings like Carson to Ross, Flynn, Pruitt, Tillerson, and everyone else Trump brought into his administration hell bent on enriching themselves, fleecing the Treasury and pushing extremist policies that benefit no one but the ultra wealthy.

Heck, when you look at the GOP tax scheme, it’s as though Trump’s tax lawyers wrote it - because every provision seems to benefit him and no one else.

Every last benefit seems to help someone just like him - from the passthrough tax break cutting his tax burden from 39.6% to 25% for all the hundreds of passthroughs he set up to manage his businesses to the estate tax repeal.

The GOP owns this entire shit show and it’s time the media did its job holding the GOP explicitly responsible for it - and quit with the magical balance fairy nonsense that they keep relying upon as though there’s something the Democrats, let alone Hillary did, that is equivalent to the GOP and Trump coordinating and being complicit with the Russians interfering in the election and manipulating the electorate with misinformation that continues to this day.

Red alert time for pardons.

I’m willing to bet that Mueller already has a counter-move for this scenario.

An adviser to Special Counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly tasked with researching every legal precedent and limitation to the power of a presidential pardon, as the Justice Department probes Russian interference in the election and possible links between Moscow and President Trump’s campaign.

Michael Dreeben, the top legal counsel to Mueller’s chief investigator, is delving into the history of presidential pardons, whether any restrictions could apply to them, and various interpretations of the law, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

The news outlet, citing an unidentified source, reported that Mueller is laying the groundwork for the possibility that Trump pardons his aides or allies before prosecutors can charge anyone within his inner circle.

Dreeben is also working to ensure that every step Mueller’s team makes will hold up in court against an appeal, according to Bloomberg, which pointed to the search warrant and raid of Paul Manafort’s Virginia home in late July. Manafort served as Trump’s campaign manager.

Dreeben has appeared before the Supreme Court more 100 times during his career as a government lawyer, Bloomberg noted.

What a long strange day it’s been….

Actually, started when I saw a woman’s purse fly off the roof of the car in front of me on a busy four-lane street. I pulled over, waited for traffic to clear, then picked up the purse. I checked the license and got an address. Drove about 30 minutes to the other side of the next city only to find that she had moved. Dove deeper into to purse and found another address. Drove 15 more minutes and found the house and a car in the driveway that matched the one I originally saw. I pounded on the door. Nothing. Tapped on windows. Nothing. I did NOT want to drive all that way again, so i pounded one more time and finally a peeved-looking man came to the door. I asked if the was the F___ residence to which he responded in the affirmative. Asked him to describe his wife’s purse. Certain it was right, I went back to my car, got it, and handed it over. By now he looked a bit stunned. Just as I was getting into my car I think it dawned on him and he said “thank you, thank you—what’s your name?” I just smiled, got back up on my horse back into my crappy little car, and drove away.

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience.

After watching 10 months of Trump as pres, plus the campaign to become Pres, I don’t see what people have to be optimistic about.

I get the impression Mueller and team are ahead of the game. It seems once we hear something in the media Mueller is about to announce some finding on it.

I sometimes get the feeling the only way the media is finding out about some of it is because Mueller and gang have already been through it which opened access for the media.

That is not to say Mueller is leaking as much as to compare it to reports from the people after General Sherman had just left their town on his way to Atlanta.

re: #309 Skip Intro

What facts am I missing here?

My statement was in general regarding pessimists.

But in this case the same facts can be seen two different ways.

I see things like Trumps numbers and the general hatred of Republicans as a good thing. I see them in disarray really worse than Democrats because it is highly unusual of the Republicans to be this fucked up. Democrats operate in this state.

So we got familiarity going for us! And maybe this does force us to get our shit together, but maybe that is an optimistic statement too.

You see a lot of what I just typed as a sign the Republicans can get away with anything and will continue to do so. You make it appear they have all the numbers to keep it going and the Democrats are fucking up and going to give it up anyway.

Jury is still out and there is no way to know. I and others try to remain hopeful. You and others say we mess it all up and there is very little hope to change it.

So, it really comes down to the words pessimist and optimist. They both are based on impression, mood and outlook. And it really isn’t about right or wrong as people are people.

And the Democrats have a lot of pessimists. Always have. I believe that can be made a fact.

So, for all these reasons, it was a little surprising to see Manafort charged before Flynn. And the explanation could be as simple as the fact that Manafort wouldn’t cooperate but Flynn did.
