At Least 20 Dead and 30 Injured in Texas Church Shooting

US News • Views: 37,485

And again.

At least 20 people were killed and 30 injured in a Texas church shooting Sunday morning, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

The alleged shooter is dead, and it appears there is no longer an active threat at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, about 40 miles southeast of San Antonio, police told ABC News.

And as Republican politicians start doing their usual revolting song and dance, I just have one comment to make.

From upstairs:

White supremacists are now sharing documents to use and manufacture bombs. And grenades. And mines.

but antifa is the bigger threat to America, right?

The “antifa” term is unfortunate. It confuses people.

It is a polemic device to conflate anyone who opposes fascism and White Supremacism with a violent, anarchic, anonymous fringe group.

It also goes along well with the “both sides” narrative that has prevailed since Charlottesville.

Any patriotic American should be anti-fascist by default and definition.

But apparently, this is the exact kind of ‘straight shooting’ the GOP loves, not narcissism like Obama saying “I” a few times.

FRANKFORT

Jeff Hoover resigned his post as speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives Sunday, a day after defiantly rejecting calls to step down by Gov. Matt Bevin and others who said they were disgusted by allegations of sexual harassment against Hoover and three other GOP lawmakers.

A tearful Hoover acknowledged that he had “engaged in inappropriate text messages” and asked the people of Kentucky “to forgive me for my actions.”

Hoover was elected in January as the first Republican House speaker since 1921.

A Jamestown attorney who has been in the House since 1997, Hoover said he never engaged in “unwelcome or unwanted conduct” and “at no time were there ever any sexual relations of any kind.”

Thoughts and prayers are fine, but useless unless backed up with action, to at least try, to prevent more shootings.

NRA influence in American politics is pure insanity.

The other difference worth noting? When sane people “politicize” a mass shooting, they ask for bans and/or restrictions on the ability to buy weapons.

Ammosexuals/GOPers ask for bans and restrictions on entire groups of human beings.

House GOP is giving less consideration to their tax plan than they typically do to a bill naming a post office.

Realize that this is exactly how most gun nuts think. They think it’s going to be all glorious and fantastic like action movies or first-person shooters. They should talk to active-duty service members, get stories about their first times in combat. They wouldn’t learn anything because they’re incapable of learning, but at least then they could say they tried to get educated on reality.

As an aside, don’t know if you saw the news, but George Soros recently gave $18 billion to his Open Society Foundations. Soros’s charity is active in promoting immigration into Europe, and in fighting governments like Orban’s, which the foundations believe is anti-democratic and bad for civil society. It can sound good on the surface, but when you start digging, you’ll find that Soros — in coordination with the US Government under the Obama administration! — paid for the translation and distribution of a Macedonian edition of Rules for Radicals, Saul Alinsky’s classic book on left-wing subversion. The Orban government and Soros have been fierce critics of each other. Orban has attacked Soros -funded institutions in Hungary, in ways that strike Americans as plainly anti-democratic and illiberal. Orban supporters counter that they have no choice, given the deep pockets of globalist financier Soros, and his agenda to undermine Hungarian sovereignty. With the $18 billion gift, the governments of Eastern Europe will be facing Soros challenges for a long time to come.

A LinkedIn account appearing to belong to Kelley describes him as serving in the U.S. Air Force from his 2009 high-school graduation until 2013, after which he briefly taught at a summer Bible school.

re: #99 blueraven

ABC report (according to Fox news) said shooter is a 20yr old white male who was posting pics of assault style weapons on FB.

Something’s off, a person who is 20 years old now couldn’t have joined the Air Force in 2009.

It’s not simply that. It’s also that from the moment he took office, the GOP bitched about the deficit and the debt that “we’re leaving to our grandkids!!!!” But as soon as they want to give their rich corporate buddies a tax cut, $1.5 trillion is a drop in the bucket.

RepubliKKKlans love to use “Tax and Spend” when it comes to Democrats. Why will NOT A SINGLE Democrat fight back by attacking them as “Borrow and Spend” OR “Red Ink” Republicans?

Colorado Springs is libertarian-land, partly because of the proximity to the Air Force academy & HQ, and partly because, well, people who live in the mountains tend to be ornery individualists.

Daily Beast had this image of the guy with a baby. And then also fetishizing his assault rifle.

“She’s a bad bitch,” he bragged. It gave him a sense that he was also bad. And powerful. And then he went into a church and mowed people down.

This is a small thing in the context of today’s, and all the other, mass slaughters, but it mattered to me.

I live in one of those states that worship guns. I’m well familiar with guns myself. My father was a competitive handgun shooter in all calibers, I still have some of his medals, and although I never much cared for pistols, I was myself a very good rifle shot from age 12.

Yesterday I saw my first example of an open carry clown, a guy in the supermarket with a woman and two kids, and with some kind of automatic (probably a .38, but it was in a holster so I can’t be sure).

I was right behind him in line when I saw the weapon. It didn’t make me feel safe or secure to know that there was a supposed “good guy with a gun” in the store. In fact I backed out of the line and went to the most distant cashier I could find.

Something is seriously wrong with anyone who thinks he needs a gun to go shopping for groceries.

The first comment at Redstate regarding the shooting in Texas starts with the usual sending of “thoughts & prayers” and goes on to state that we need to allow open and concealed carry everywhere to prevent this from happening.

I have a better idea:

Since we can do nothing to stop criminals or the criminally intent from getting guns and killing people, plus the fact that gun nuts want everyone packing heat to be ready to do battle while out shopping for groceries, how about placing Rent-A-Gun racks everywhere? It’s not fair to make people remember to bring their gun before leaving the house when we all know that criminals will never forget theirs. Out shopping (going to church, getting your drivers license renewed, etc…) and forgot to grab your gun before leaving the house? Just pick one up at a conveniently placed Rent-A-Gun kiosk!

No need for ID to prove your age or to block criminals from getting a rent a gun because kids play with guns all of the time and criminals are going to get guns anyway. Since everyone else should be armed at all times, criminal and good citizen alike, just slide some of that good ol’ American cash into the slot and walk away with your rental Glock. Now you can enjoy your time out in public secure in the knowledge that if there is a shooting at your location then you are ready to shoot back… as long as you weren’t the first one shot, of course.

Back to reality:

I am sick of “thought & prayers” being the standard issue response for every shooting. If I was to send those out for every shooting, every day, my life would be nothing more than doing just that all of the damned time. “Thoughts & prayers” posted online are nothing, have no value and do absolutely nothing for anyone but the one ‘sending’ them. Same thing with spoken “thoughts & prayers”, they are of no value to those they are intended for unless you are personally delivering them to those who need them.

We worship a Constitutional Amendment so much that people have to die every single day. It’s insane. Words and deadly cold, steel have more value in America than the people the Constitution was written for.

A small church in the middle of rural Texas? I really doubt it had a “no guns” sign up on the door. So there goes that theory asshats.

Besides. It wouldn’t change much. I carry. I’ve gone to self defense training. You’re taught in a situation like that to flee, not engage. Only draw your weapon and engage if you have no other choice (like being backed into a room with no escape). The last thing you want is to be in a situation where the police are responding and you’re the guy in the middle of a bunch of victims with your gun out.

I’m willing to bet that most of those yahoos that are spouting off that bullshit don’t even own a gun (because they live in Russia….)

Remember my earlier comment: The gun-humpers live in an alternate reality that works like an action movie or a video game. They’re the hero, they’re going to pull out their weapon and miraculously save the day. Because they have no direct experience with the reality of a shooter situation, they have no way of determining how very, very wrong they are. And even if they should learn that, they would still prioritize their gun fetish above all else, even their own lives.

Uh-oh. Assuming this is all true, the “good guy with a gun” narrative has just emerged. And so goes all hope of making any progress on sane and rational gun control. It was a slim hope anyway, but if that tweet holds water, it’s a literal impossibility.

In late June, President Trump hosted a group of Native American tribal leaders at the White House and urged them to “just do it” and extract whatever they want from the land they control.

The exchange turned out to be an unusually vivid window into the almost kingly power that Trump sees himself as holding, and which he has begun describing with increasing bluntness. The scene was recounted by a source in the room and confirmed by another. The White House didn’t dispute the story.

The chiefs explained to Trump that there were regulatory barriers preventing them from getting at their energy. Trump replied: “But now it’s me. The government’s different now. Obama’s gone; and we’re doing things differently here.”

“So what I’m saying is, just do it.”

There was a pause in the room and the tribal leaders looked at each other.

“Chief, chief,” Trump continued, addressing one of the tribal leaders, “what are they going to do? Once you get it out of the ground are they going to make you put it back in there? I mean, once it’s out of the ground it can’t go back in there. You’ve just got to do it. I’m telling you, chief, you’ve just got to do it.”

The tribal leader looked back at one of the White House officials in the room — perhaps somebody from the White House Counsel’s office — and he said “can we just do that?” The official equivocated, saying the administration is making progress and has a plan to roll back various regulations.

Trump interjected again: “Guys, I feel like you’re not hearing me right now. We’ve just got to do it. I feel like we’ve got no choice; other countries are just doing it. China is not asking questions about all of this stuff. They’re just doing it. And guys, we’ve just got to do it.”

Killing first-graders didn’t do it, shooting Congressmen didn’t do it, shooting hundreds at a C&W concert didn’t do it. I don’t expect shooting churchgoers to do it either. I’m not sure anything will ever turn the tide.

Dylann Roof shot churchgoers 2 years ago. So shooting churchgoers is nothing new. And the NRA worshipers don’t care.

Guns are literally the only safety and security ever, according to the 2nd Amendment fetishists. There’s literally no other way to be safe ever unless you own at least a dozen guns personally.

You know, I don’t give a damn if the shooter was an atheist or a Mormon or a Pentecostal or a Muslim or a Jain. I don’t care if he was a he or a she. I don’t care if he was right-wing or left-wing or straight down the bird’s back. I don’t care if he was white or black or brown or yellow. All I care about is that he had weapons a sane society wouldn’t have allowed him to have.

People are determined to draw their previous “just so” stories out of this.

Man, that dude has got an absolutely GORGEOUS Waco Waterfall on the back of his head.

To the ammosexuals and other wingnuts it makes sense.

They regard firearms as holy icons of the American faith. When the icons are everywhere the faith will be everywhere and evil will be defeated.

“Try building cars in the US”?? I can’t believe even Donald Trump would be stupid enough to say something like this: Japanese-brand automakers built four fucking million cars in the US last year (and exported 10% of them) - yet President Shit-For-Brains still spouts off like it’s still 1985 ?

I was going to make a comment about “doesn’t he have ANYBODY with him conversant enough with trade and investment issues to keep him from making stupid embarrassing remarks?, but then realized that it probably wouldn’t make any difference… what a baffoon.

I hope the Saudi’s aren’t listening to Trump’s recollection of the 1970-1980s to inform them of how Iran is acting.

Which he was legally not allowed to purchase or own!

re: #208 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

Uh-oh. Assuming this is all true, the “good guy with a gun” narrative has just emerged. And so goes all hope of making any progress on sane and rational gun control. It was a slim hope anyway, but if that tweet holds water, it’s a literal impossibility.

More than 20 people are dead.
There was no good guy with a gun that made any freaking difference.
