Ya know, if Rand Paul was pushed off his mower and fractured 5 ribs, I hope someone is checking for osteoporosis. Unless there was some complicating factor, that just doesn’t sound right.

Perhaps the neighbor swatted him off it with a baseball bat??

Heaven knows what actually happened, but the initial description I heard was that Paul was “pushed to the ground from behind.” Then there was something about “while mowing his lawn” with a picture of a riding mower. I suppose he could have hit something on the way down, but it just sounds weird.

I’d guess that his neighbor kicked the crap out of him when he was down. It seems extreme for a foliage related dispute, and about right for finding out that your neighbor is sleeping with your wife.

Rand Paul seems like the kind of smarmy prick that could start blood feuds among strangers merely by his being in the same area code. No telling what kinds of escalation he can get up to with actual neighbors.

If his neighbor kicked him even once when he was on the ground that could very well account for four broken ribs. I know this because I had the same thing happen to me over 20 years ago, and I’ve still got two “floating” ribs that never properly healed and from time to time cause discomfort.

For people who point out that this is already law, Flake’s answer is that the law needs to be better defined. Since NICS began modern record-keeping in 2007, he said, there has only been one instance of the Pentagon reporting a domestic violence charge like that to the database.

Thank you so much Tom Perriello for working hard on these after your defeat in the primary. And of course all the candidates in these.

No elections in our neck of the woods. There were school board members who would ordinarily have been up, but they extended their terms by a year so as not to have to run an election in which almost no one votes. Seems reasonable to me.

I have to say that I’m more than a little bit curious on how the Charlottesville vote is going to go - they are historically lean very slightly to the Democratic side but with recent events I can see that demographic changing a lot.

First Charlottesville precinct is in and it’s a slight lead for the Democrat- Northam 706, Gillespie 91, Hyra 3.

It has gone Democratic in the last 3 presidential elections and we do have 2 Dem senators but we still had Republicans controlling 2/3’s of the legislature. it’s a light blue state if it’s anything. Calling it like Alabama is some mighty fine spin.

Democrats win both governorships - NJ and VA. That’s big.

Two other big races still to be decided: Maine Medicaid expansion and the Ohio drug plan. NYC mayor should be a slam dunk on par with the NJ governorship.

I think the Ohio drug plan is going to get beat. The Issue was vague and could have ended up costing private insurance people more to make up for the supposedly lower prices for Vets.

And if it was so good for Vets, why did every Vets group in this state come out against it?

It just was an odd duck…and Bernie backed it, which kinda seems to me he got into one aspect…he heard lower costs and that was all he wanted. He didn’t look into the details and how it could backfire on others.

They’ll declare that Ed simply was insufficiently appealing to the “working class” voters, even though he appealed to all the same things that Trump did and ran a Trump-style campaign. Except that it’s increasingly looking like it will be a comparative blowout. The Times estimated margin is currently sitting at 8.5%. It’s pretty certain Lt. Governor and Attorney General will be retained by the Democrats and the House of Delegates advantage for Rs is going to be severely eroded if not eliminated. All of this in an off year election when Democrats don’t generally turn out.

re: #315 RiverBoy

I am saying taking money, as a politician, from billionaires to fund your campaign is at the very least the perception of corruption. Not many billionaires hand over huge sums of money and expect nothing in return. The point I have been trying to make is that the GOP will always have the built in advantage because they have a base that will turn a blind eye to it. The Democrats on the other hand have to get votes from people that actually care if they’re represented by non-corrupted officials. In your first question you used bullets as a metaphor for money in politics so maybe this might explain my point. Not all bullets hit their intended target. The GOP base are easy targets. The DNC has much more difficult targets to hit. And in the times you miss you target unintended consequences may occur. So while the GOP are over there shooting fish in the barrel, The DNC are getting some hits here and there but at the same time some of them are shooting themselves it the foot. That isn’t working out from my point of view.

I want to come back to this point, because it was thoughtful and I don’t want you to think I dismissed it. The idea that taking money as a politician to fund your campaign is corruption is both a true statement about a perception, and on it’s face an absurd amount of the most incomprehensible thinking that I could imagine. There are billionaire Democrats too, right? Why the hell shouldn’t they want the D candidate to win? Aren’t the billionaire Democrats for stuff like civil rights and strong labor and the rest of it? Like…the perception of billionaire is obviously fat old white guy, but what about Oprah?

This isn’t breaking the rules of land war to be on par with the terrorists, this is like…making sure you can get your message out and your people to the place where they need to be. What random kind of scruffy hipster BS doesn’t want rich people actually using their fortune for a public good? “We’re so pure that we’d rather lose elections than take money from rich people” is just infantile.

I think a lot of folks will be surprised by the narrative.

Remember, the media for the most part are band wagoners.

They sell to the mood and the fashion. Big Donny is already showing signs of being out of fashion.

If Mueller comes out with more and more revelations unkind to the Big Orange Blob the media will turn and follow the polling numbers, which Trump is already heading into the worst ever.

I can see them asking tomorrow: Are the Republicans in Trouble? Is America turning on Trump?

And yeah, I hear about all that big media controlled by the monied conservatives. But they do like to make money. So if it sells, they will sell Trump out.

True enough, we may see tomorrow’s narrative becoming “Is Trump toxic to the Republican brand? Will the party leave him now? What does this mean for 2018?”

Though they won’t really start to dig the knives out until his “Cut Cut Cut Plan” fails miserably.

On the list of priorities that Twitter should have done, jumping to 280 was way down on the list. Wiping out the trolls, bigots, and harassers, and cracking down on TOS violations was much higher. Getting edit ability was much higher.

I’ve actually had a posting window open with that video all day, but things kept getting in the way of posting it. It will go up in a little while. It’s pretty awesome, but also sickening to see Spencer in his true element.

Seriously, having to win statewide by 10% to have an even chance at gaining control of a majority of legislative seats is BS.

Yes. The fact that a wave election sufficient to overcome a gerrymander will obliterate the party that set it up isn’t enough to justify (or even excuse) gerrymandering.

re: #382 Charles Johnson

I predict that all the complaining about Twitter’s new 280-character limit will vanish very quickly as people realize it really is better. Sure, there’s something to be said for conciseness, and 140 characters did force people to think carefully about what they wrote, but hey. This is simply better, and I’m not complaining about it at all.

Many of my tweets have needed about 20 extra characters, and by the time I whittle them down, I fear the meaning’s getting lost.

This would be by far the biggest Dem gubernatorial win in my lifetime here. As I said, I really think Virginians were disgusted by Gillespie’s pandering to nativism. It may have worked in the else populated areas but in the population centers where we call those immigrants that Eddie attacked not just friend but also family, it didn’t work.

This is the real story. The Va HoD was controlled 64-36 by Rs. That is an absolutely WHOPPING majority. For the Dems to take the HoD would be absolutely extraordinary and will leave R political operatives absolutely shaking in their boots over the ‘18 US HoR elections.

They’ll claim that you can’t extrapolate a limited sample size. Or that states that were purple/blue to deep blue going blue are no way to show what will happen elsewhere.

We’d just have to ignore that Trump has zero coattails and is incapable of dragging anyone to a popular vote win.
