Video: British Journalist Gary Younge Shows How to Deal With Nazi Leader Richard Spencer

Politics • Views: 35,413

American journalists should watch how British Channel 4’s Gary Younge deals with white supremacist Richard Spencer and take it to heart. This is how Nazis should be treated, not with deference and both-sidesism, but as hateful dim-witted creatures who should simply be shunned.

Nope. The latest BernieBro hope, Jabari Brisport, trails Democrat Laurie Cumbo by a margin of more than 3 to 1.

I am very superstitious and terrified of watching returns in real time. I have been so pessimistic the past few days; at least partly because of the BernieBros I know who really want to burn everything down if they don’t get their way. Also the decision of the DFA to pull their support of Northam over his comments on sanctuary cities. But a California friend texted that Northam was winning, but only 75% of the vote was in. It wasn’t until the Washington Post announced Northam won that I felt safe in seeing what’s happening through the conversations here. For the first time in a year — a major reason for celebration!!

I was talking about political fashion and the media in the last thread.

Last week’s SNL and Larry David made a pretty good dig on Bernie. I saw where some in the media were talking about that may be a signal that Bernie isn’t as cool anymore, and really some are getting sick of the act.

Bernie may be running out of gas. He hasn’t done well picking candidates or legislation backing. He might not be able to dictate anything to the Democrats.

That is correct. In fact, a BB FB friend was flouting that the “progressives” refused to endorse Northam in my TL this morning. Well, don’t expect Ralph to pander to Bernie then. Bernie showed what kind of man he is by refusing to endorse Ralph. On the other side of things, Tom Perriello showed what kind of man he is by not only endorsing Ralph but working on the ground four our HoD candidates. It really pissed me off to see CNN describe Tom as a “Sanders/Warren” type candidate. He’s not. He’s Tom Perriello, very much his own man.

You know me, I went all out for Tom but the minute that Ralph became the nominee, I became a Northam guy all the way. Some hack on CNN was trying to wish for a schism in four years when we have to replace Ralph. So Danica isn’t the first transgender, but still awesome, and now I know more history:

en.wikipedia.org

Althea Garrison (born October 7, 1940)[1] is an American politician from Boston, Massachusetts who was elected as a Republican to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1992 and served one term from 1993 to 1995. Both before and after Garrison’s successful bid for office, she has run unsuccessfully in multiple elections for the state legislature and Boston City Council, as a Republican, Democrat, or independent, which has resulted in her being described in the media as a “perennial candidate”.[2][3] Garrison is also known as the first transgender or transsexual person to be elected to a state legislature in the United States.[4][5]

Edit: Now, some are pointing out in my readings that she wasn’t “out” as trans at the time of her win. So, more to learn.

I’m not a parent but I intend to explain to my niece if it comes up that Danica Roem is entitled to the same respect and deserving under the law and deserving of the same love as she is. I love how they say what about the children when the kids quite honestly are pretty cool. My cousin was telling me that her little ones knew that their parents had gay friends from a fairly early age and it really didn’t bother them at all and that’s the thing that scaers people like this asshole the most. That not only will the kids be unfazed by LGBT people but they will pay it no more matter than the person having blue eyes or blonde hair. Oh you’re trans? No biggie.

So Danica isn’t the first transgender, but still awesome, and now I know more history:

en.wikipedia.org

It’s pretty cool to see this happen though in Prince William County. PWC is NoVa guys but it’s not as liberal as FC or even Loudoun. It’s actually the home base of Corey Stewart who I think has to be pretty damn scared knowing this is happening in his own backyard. Hopefully he runs against Kaine next year and Kaine ends his misery just like Kaine did George Allen’s.

Fairfax and Herring are going to be a great LG and AG too, well Herring will continue to be a great AG. Sounds like a good idea. If the GOP doesn’t hear from constituents, they won’t realize their voters don’t share their views on issues. Silence implies consent.

You don’t like the fuckin’ rules? Then go to your local party headquarters. Volunteer. Answer phones. Work your way up the local hierarchy. Show you have more interest in the party than just every four years.

I learned this way back when I was in my early 30s and I decided I wanted to run for Congress against an incumbent Republican. The Democratic Party in my district hadn’t put up a decent candidate in a couple of elections, and I thought, “Well, fuck it. I’ll try” because I hated our asshole representative, a man by the name of Mike Pence. When I walked into the local Democratic HQ, the old white men there stared at me and asked what I had done as a Democrat. Had I worked on a campaign? Well, Bill Clinton. Had I run for anything? No. Essentially, they told me I hadn’t earned their support and, sure, I could try on my own to get on the ballot, but they wouldn’t help me. Come back when I had more under my belt.

And that’s how you were denied a debate between the future Vice-President and the Rude Pundit. I realized that they were right. I didn’t have a war chest or name recognition. They had their own agenda. I hadn’t proven myself. (I’m not talking here about Bernie Sanders - I’m talking about those who want to change the DNC.)

You better get to work.

I was holding out for a night like this after the previous special elections on state levels ousted Republicans in New Hampshire and Oklahoma.

I’m not a party strategist for the GOP (and I wouldn’t want to be), but I suspect that is why the GOP’s AG group poured so much effort and money into their campaign against Mark Herring in Virginia.

The earlier special elections (along with Jon Ossoff losing by a tiny margin in Newt Gingrich’s old district) was the warning shot over their bow.

That’s a great way to explain transgender to a kid, but as for the other thing, I’m such a coward about this kind of stuff I’d probably go with something like, “Remember when you pulled kitty’s ears and we had to put that nasty medicine on your hand?”

Herring was the total opposite of Cuccinnelli, that’s why they targeted him. I was actually a stone’s throw away from him on Saturday. I really wish I had said something lol but I get shy!

They are hopelessly delusional.

No they are not. Tomorrow morning they will get up, look at the numbers and start planning for ‘18. This is just the beginning. They just a took a very hard punch in the mouth, like we did a year ago. Now they will plan their counterpunch.

But they have some major disadvantages, and they start with Drumpf. They must decide whether to embrace him, which looks like a losing proposition right now, or run tangentially on the state and local level hoping their gerrymandered districts can fend off the advantage the Dems have shown in their GOTV success. They are in a pickle, for sure.

I imagine their best Plan A is to double down and attack anything and everything Dem. That means gearing up their media to turn the volume up to eleven and see what sticks. But demographics and a softening of opinion in the middle toward social issues will not help them.

If, by spring, the Rs haven’t passed any of their policy packages (and that’s a real possibility after tonight), they will look to some kind of Plan B. I think the tax reform bill, as presented, is probably dead.

The ant mound has been kicked over, and there’s a lot of flop sweat out there right now.

Trump is the GOP’s biggest disadvantage right now. He’s become an albatross around their necks……and if more indictments continue to come against former (and even current) members of the administration, the GOP will begin to panic in earnest.

I reckon that will transpire around next spring.

Just in time for primary season.

County sheriffs in the six Nebraska counties that border Colorado make a big deal about alleged smuggling from Colorado. I don’t really read that much in the newspaper about any drug busts for weed though. (Meth, but they make that here.)

When Colorado first passed its legal weed referendum, Nebraska was seriously considering closing all non-paved roads across the state line (a couple wingnuts in the Unicameral even proposed having armed citizen patrols on the state line).

There are less than a dozen paved roads across the state line (not counting I-76), which the county sheriffs figured they could patrol better.

Ranchers and farmers along the state line went ballistic, as such a proposal would really screw up their ability to go to fields and pastures on each side of the state line.

Eventually, the state gave up on that idea.

All the people who said that the DNC can’t win if they’re only seen as being against Trump or if they keep talking about Russia need to sit down. The ones who said you need to play to white voters to win can shut up after the boost in PoC turnout tonight. And the people who said that nobody likes the ACA and that we need to lay off guns can go fornicate with themselves.

Most importantly, any who wrote Northam off as “establishment” and the race as lost because we needed a “populist” candidate can kiss my lily-white ass.

I just checked the St. Paul mayoral results. Because of our instant run-off voting, I didn’t think we’d know for sure for a day or two who was going to come out on top. It turns out that St. Paul has it’s first African American mayor. He got over 50% of the vote.

He wasn’t my first choice but he was easily my second choice. He’s going to be a very good mayor.

I see tonight as not only the first nail in the coffin of Trumpism, but also a massive loss for Bernism.

Yep, it is a big strike against Bernism. And Bernie refused to even endorse Northam. I hope Ralph doesn’t forget that the next time Bernie tries to claim he’s the “leader of the Democratic Party”*
* The party he still isn’t a member of.

I saw that Minneapolis elected an African-American transwoman to its city council if I understand right. Pretty cool. I know MN has a long progressive tradition but between this, Ellison’s prominence in national politics, and I believe MN recently sent a Somali-American to the legislature there, MN’s doing its part to represent our diversity through great men and women.

I’ve never voted anything but a paper ballot since they got rid of the old voting booths where opening the privacy curtain triggered the machine to count your vote.

This was the first year that the voting room staff didn’t seem to have things organized. There was no one leading you through the process and no privacy folders to use when taking your paper ballot over to the collection machine. Everything was spread out and not labeled clearly. It was very surprising. Usually they’re on top of it.

I was tested for drugs for over a year due to a DUI conviction. Now, folks here and in meatspace know me as a guy who enjoys cannabis. With that said, my very first piss test was a disaster. My probation officer told me that not only did I fail my drug test, I failed quite miserably. We had a talk, and agreed that I would cease to use cannabis from that moment forward. I did. I still failed the next two piss tests, but the level of THC dropped every test. All told, it took me 17 days to piss zero for cannabis. I went 18 months without the stuff.

I’ve been pulled over twice since moving here. Once for speeding a couple months ago on US-30 about a mile east of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming (written warning), and a couple weeks ago on NE-88 about five miles east of La Grange, Wyoming (they had a “safety checkpoint” set up to catch all the hooligans from the Bible college there … when I was going through there was nothing wrong).

I think Gillespie honestly thought he could win by trying to pander to both the electorate that loved Trump bu talso to the fact that the state was reliably Republican when he was RNC chair. Ed also got cocky after his close run against Warner. Don’t get me wrong. He actually had a decent campaign in 2014 but he greatly benefited from the Va Dems taking that one off. re: #413 whitebeach

Dead guy on the ground, and the motto “Sic Semper Tyrannis” is exactly what John Wilkes Booth shouted when he leapt from Lincoln’s box onto the stage at Ford’s Theater. I just don’t like the associations and implications, no matter how much I hate Trump.

Booth was co-opting and misapplying the Virginia motto, since Lincoln was obviously not a tyrant except to rebel die-hards like Booth and his co-conspirators. The seal dates to 1776 and explicitly refers to the British crown, seen fallen on the right.
Flag and seal of Virginia

On this side, a female figure personifying the Roman virtue of Virtus was selected to represent the genius of the new Commonwealth. Virginia’s Virtus is a figure of peace, standing in a pose which indicates a battle already won. She rests on her long spear, its point turned downward to the ground. Her other weapon, a parazonium, is sheathed; it is the sword of authority rather than that of combat. Virtus is typically shown with a bare left breast; this is commonly recognized as the only use of nudity among the seals of the U.S. states.

Tyranny lies prostrate beneath the foot of Virtus, symbolizing Great Britain’s defeat by Virginia. The royal crown which has fallen to the ground beside him symbolizes the new republic’s release from the monarchical control of Great Britain; Maryland, Virginia and New York are the only U.S. states with a flag or seal displaying a crown. The broken chain in Tyranny’s left hand represents Virginia’s freedom from Britain’s restriction of colonial trade and westward expansion. The useless whip in his right hand signifies Virginia’s relief from the torturing whip of acts of punishment such as the Intolerable Acts. His robe is purple, a reference to Julius Caesar and the Etruscan king of Rome, Tarquinius Priscus.

The motto selected for the obverse of the Virginia seal is Sic semper tyrannis, or in English, Thus always to tyrants. This is a derived quote from the famous events in Roman history, attributed to Brutus upon his participation in the slaying of Julius Caesar. (Caesar had been named perpetual dictator of Rome in the same year, and some Senators believed he had ambitions to abolish the Roman Republic and establish himself as a monarch.)

Booth and other rebels don’t own this symbolism and I will not let them claim it.

Absolutely. A wide range of people from various backgrounds won tonight. And if I say so myself, I loved hearing our new governor with his Tidewater Virginia drawl paying tribute to the diversity of the nation. It’s beautiful man. His running mate was a black kid from Pittsburgh who grew up in a poor part of D.C. ad who worked hard and became a federal prosecutor. Just so many great people who represent what makes this nation so wonderful tonight. I think it’s sad that Gillespie pandered to what he did since he too is a son of an immigrant but he cared more about pandering to the past than embracing our future.

what I believe that we’re seeing in tonight’s election result is something along the lines of the ending of complacency of the American middle. Left-leaning but disdainful of local politics and getting their hands dirty in the day-to-day are finding out that yes, every couple of years you have to get up off of your ass and go and vote and you have to pay attention to what the candidates actually say versus what the media thinks that they are saying.

Took electing a complete set of crooks and liars and giving them control of the levers of power to actually realize that the GOP has lost their ever-loving minds about issues ranging from immigration to gun-control to health care.

Keeping them aware and participating is the trick, this isn’t just slap a damn band-aid on it and stop worrying about it, this is the beginning of the long hard slog to kick out the fascists, the theocrats, the grifters, the crooks, the dark money and the rich that would just as soon keep you dumb and subservient.

Lets hope that this the result isn’t just a harbinger of the battle won, but to a successful triumph over those folks whose vision of America isn’t inclusive, tolerant and compassionate.
