Yes, Laura that makes sense. Nevermind that Trump has a 43% approval rating in this state. Nevermind that a 1/3 of votes said they were influenced by opposition to Trump. Gillespie fully embraced Trumpism and if he had embraced Trump even more, we may have been looking at an even bigger loss for Enron Eddie.

Our Confederate statues*, even though I’m the grandson of a Scottish immigrant ot New York and son of a Czech trophy wife must be preserved as we vote for a guy whose “Confederate heritage” is in Philly.

What’s truly pathetic about how Gillespie acted is his own old man was an immigrant. I don’t know if the older Gillespie is still alive but if I were him, I’d be truly disgusted with my son and his pandering to nativism. Thing is in the past, Ed liked bragging about his Irish immigrant Dad to show how he’s a regular schmo. Ed’s like the Gary Lewis character in Gangs of New York. Don’t mind him, he used to be an Irishman.

I read that earlier. That’s my grandparents’ hometown. I was just there in July. It breaks my heart because I have seen the kindness of the people there. From the man who was neighbors with my great aunt/godmother and who kindly remembered her, the lady who lives in my grandmother’s childhood home and showed us around, the firefighter who told me about the American Legion memorial dedicated to my cousin Mike and the other men from the town that gave their lives in war. Johnstown has a special place in my heart. It literally was the place that welcomed many of my immigrant ancestors and it saddens me so much that many Johnstowners and and residents of Cambria County, descendants of so called “Hunkies” are now embracing the same naitivism directed at our families. I’m both sad and disgusted.

an acquaintance of mine was anti-Obama because he was on disability and hadn’t seen an increase on his disability stipend until this year, which he attributed to the efforts of DJT until he was informed that the legislation to give him an increase was done via executive order from 44, not 45. In fact that with 45, his stipend could expect to be cut if the new tax bill is passed because everyone else will have to make sacrifices for those who’ve been oppressed making over 7 digits a year in income. Needless to say he was shocked. Had to have “proof”… links provided… then someone dropped the other shoe and informed him that he’s probably getting his “news” from sources that are less than objective.

That guy McCabe isn’t much older than my Dad. Can’t imagine my Dad saying something htat disgusting. I never knew Dad’s Dad but a story my Dad often told my brothers and I is how when he used that word once in the late 50’s. Big Dad (That’s what we call my Dad’s Dad), anyhow he gave Dad a rare spanking and made sure he knew how terrible that word was. I never knew him but that story has shaped me. And it’s why I do not simply give people a pass for their era or place of birth. Big Dad would have been 104 this June. He was born the same year as Nixon, two years younger than Reagan, but he knew better than to be a bigot.

re: #29 Belafon

well, it’s a difficult process… for some reason, its seems that many people actually condone treason and cheating if “their” side wins. It’s really galling to watch people that are supposedly wrapped in their faith (because it’s promoted so prominently on their pages and in their interactions) actually support 45, and do so with apparently few reservations. I can understand the rich power hungry types because they see the use of their money to shield themselves as being essential and could give a good spit about the rest of us. Those folks, I can understand their motivation and selfishness because that’s who they are. The sanctimonious hypocrisy of those that profess to have faith is what I find so incredibly galling. I’m not religious after any fashion but I’ve read the Bible and I can remember the themes running through the New Testament regarding compassion, forgiveness, performing deeds not just mouthing words and its as if these folks have never gotten past the Old Testament smiting…

If you want to build your own supercomputer, I’ve found the book for you: apress.com

Build an inexpensive cluster of multiple Raspberry Pi computers and install all the required libraries to write parallel and scientific programs in Python 3. This book covers setting up your Raspberry Pis, installing the necessary software, and making a cluster of multiple Pis.
Once the cluster is built, its power has to be exploited by means of programs to run on it. So, Raspberry Pi Supercomputing and Scientific Programming teaches you to code the cluster with the MPI4PY library of Python 3. Along the way, you will learn the concepts of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) standards and will explore the fundamentals of parallel programming on your inexpensive cluster. This will make this book a great starting point for supercomputing enthusiasts who want to get started with parallel programming.
The book finishes with details of symbolic mathematics and scientific and numerical programming in Python, using SymPi, SciPy, NumPy, and Matplotlib. You’ll see how to process signals and images, carry out calculations using linear algebra, and visualize your results, all using Python code. With the power of a Raspberry Pi supercomputer at your fingertips, data-intensive scientific programming becomes a reality at home.

71
makeitstop  Nov 8, 2017 • 11:37:36am

The Anti-Trump Wave has come, and no one can stop it.

Democrats have suffered a series of close losses in special elections in 2017, contributing to the broad sense, especially among Democrats themselves, that Donald Trump had a kind of supernatural appeal that defied political physics and rendered metrics such as his dismal approval rating suspect.

The anti-incumbent wave in Virginia has dispelled that particular form of magical thinking. Trump is a deeply unpopular president, and his party is in serious danger of losing control of the House, many of its down-ballot offices, and conceivably even the Senate.

To be sure, Virginia has unique demographic qualities that may have enhanced the power of the anti-Trump wave. It is a racially diverse state with a high proportion of college-educated voters. But there are many House Republicans from districts with similar demographic profiles — in New Jersey, New York, and California, among other places. The suburbs alone could offer up enough Republican defeats to flip the House in 2018.

What is remarkable is that the Republican plan to avert this catastrophe is to inflict economic hardship on these very constituents.

The first paragraph is important, given the fatalism that Democrats often give in to.

Gun nuts don’t live in reality. They can’t objectively answer why these types of tragedies happen far more here than anywhere else. The true problem though is while gun control advocates more or less have retained the same positions- universal background checks, closing the loophole, better enforcement of existing laws, gun nuts have grown more and more insane. And then there’s the hoarding that the right wing politicians encourage. See, that idiotic tweet by Abbott “We’re number two to California in guns, let’s beat them!” Like, it’s fine if you want to support the right to bear arms, but Republicans and gun nuts do it in such a goddamned irresponsible way.

While riding high on today’s euphoria, I’d like to go back to GUNS for a minute. Remember that shooting? Three days ago?

I’ll try to be brief (yeah right):

No gun law would have prevented….
If we don’t even enforce the laws on the books…..

Clearly, some laws deter, none “prevent”. We’ve beaten this one to death with examples and we all agree. Crime cannot be stopped in advance.

Enforcement happens *after*. It’s literally been three days. Three. It starts now. How can it be a failure? It’s barely begun.

Lots of things went wrong allowing the texas church gunman to get himself armed. Every one of those people and mechanisms should be scrutinized and if appropriate, charged. That’s what enforcement is. Enforcement is only a failure if no one tries.

There’s talk that Denis Villeneuve will direct a new cinematic take on Dune, but personally, I’m thinking that a film where drug-addicted, desert-dwelling jihadists are the good guys is gonna be…..something of a tough sell.

I swear these “constitutional conservatives” seem completely ignorant of what happened the last time we had a constitutional convention. That one, in 1787, was only supposed to amend the Articles of Confederation. Instead, it gave us an entirely new constitutional system.

A new constitutional convention would mean an entirely new constitution, not just a handful of Amendments. And unlike 1789, I highly doubt that every state would vote to ratify. It’s a recipe for the dissolution of the Union.

I live in California, and if a convention were called and a new constitution written (and it was overly wingnutty), I’m honestly not sure how I’d vote if there was a ratification referendum with choices of ratify, reject, or independence.

I think in a dark way it’s funny they’re pushing this because they’re the ones who claim to be Constitution originalists. Then again, it’s a lot like when Schalfry’s bat shit son tried to make a conservative version of the Bible.

She is circular in her answers and refuses to admit she got the premise of her book wrong, but she can tell you exactly why cancer is not the same as saying everything was fixed.

And then there is Joke. He got his chance to take some more cuts at the Clinton’s.

If anyone wants to watch this, it is interesting in a strange way. Hopefully she is done working with the Democrats. She is not needed any more.

I half-heartedly tried (a few times), but it was Spanish (which I grew up around). I know my grandparents learned English in their 30s or 40s, when they came to the States. I think it’s doable, you just have to be committed.

May try again, even as I’m staring down my 40s. There was a decent podcast I had subscribed to for Spanish, coffee break Spanish, that was like 15-30 minute episodes. First couple of seasons involved just learning phrases and pronunciation. But I had too many podcasts I was trying to listen to at the time. Maybe I’ll pick it up again.

Perriello suited up and worked tirelessly for the Democratic ticket up and down the ballot, including for the man who’d beaten him. Perriello’s performance not only piled him up serious cred within his party, it also should shame a lot of people in that party’s upper echelon.

re: #235 electrotek

I’m wanting to learn Japanese, but I’m hesitant because of previous experiences.

It is difficult as an adult to learn another language.

Especially one from an entirely different language family.

Japanese is not difficult for pronunciation - the syllabary defines how things sound, for the most part.

The real hard part is that the written language is different than the spoken language. That’s not even getting into the idioms that are gender dependent (men and women speak differently in informal language), keigo (the formal language), or the dialects.

The Chinese characters are hard to learn and even harder to keep straight, as the Japanese have grafted their own language ontop of the Chinese words.

I went through the standard 2 years of college Japanese in US, then one year full time study in Japan, and lived their another 2 years and still cannot really understand half of what I hear and three quarters of what I attempt to read.

The federal judge overseeing the criminal trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and business partner Rick Gates imposed a gag order Wednesday in the case ordering all parties, including potential witnesses, not to make statements that might prejudice jurors.U.S.

District Judge Amy Berman Jackson of Washington issued the order five days after signaling her intention to do so. In a two-page order Wednesday morning, Jackson said she had received no objections by the Tuesday deadline she had set for the parties to weigh in.

Jackson barred any prejudicial statements “to the media or public settings” to safeguard the defendants receiving a fair trial, “and to ensure that the Court has the ability to seat a jury that has not been tainted by pretrial publicity.”

The ruling applied to all participants in the case, including the parties, potential witnesses and attorneys.

Charming Christmas ideas from gun superstore Cheaper Than Dirt:
Gifts for the Home Responder.
I guess “home responder” is a new term (to me at least) for “vigilante.” The offering includes such goodies as Glock pistols, various over-priced first aid kits, and police style tactical vests with a bewildering array of pockets and pouches. They also have fancy knives of course. I don’t think I ever gave a thought to my single pocketknife in Vietnam, but every survivalist knows that the better your knife, the more tactically potent you are.
I guess when the radiation crazed hordes of “other” zombies show up in your driveway, you can jump into your tac vest, grab your Glock and run out to neutralize them. Afterward, you can play surgeon without anesthetic or prescription pain meds and enjoy a nourishing meal of rehydrated tactical bacon. Fun for the whole family.

Notre Dame employees keeping free birth control coverage

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The University of Notre Dame told its employees Tuesday that they will continue to receive no-cost birth control coverage in a reversal from what the university told its faculty and staff last week.

The Roman Catholic university in northern Indiana sent an email to employees saying its insurance provider is continuing to offer contraception coverage not funded by the university. Notre Dame notified employees a week earlier that contraception coverage would end Jan. 1.

Birth Control Works  Nov 8, 2017 • 2:45:27pm

For many conservatives, the beauty of Hillbilly Elegy was not just what it said about the lot of poor white Americans, but what it implied about black Americans as well. Conservatives believed that Hillbilly Elegy would make their intellectual platforming about the moral failures of the poor colorblind in a way that would retroactively vindicate them for viciously deploying the same stereotypes against nonwhite people for decades.

Vance uses an enduring myth about race in Appalachia to give Hillbilly Elegy its organizational logic. It is, in essence, the magic that transforms Hillbilly Elegy from a memoir of a person to the memoir of a culture. Central to it is Vance’s belief that both historic and modern white Appalachian people share a common ethnic ancestry in the form of Scots-Irish heritage. He connects this belief, in turn, to his claim that shared ethnic heritage has endowed contemporary white Appalachians with certain innate characteristics that hold the key to understanding why their home is, as he puts it, a “hub of misery.” (It is worth noting that my distinction—“white Appalachians”—is not one that Vance uses. In the world of Hillbilly Elegy, all Appalachians are white.)

VA’s favorite (metal) son chimes in…

Instagram

FINALLY! Some GOOD news! Time to take this moment to personally congratulate this woman, Danica Roem, on her historic electoral victory over Bob Marshall, a man who described himself as his state’s “CHIEF HOMOPHOBE”- Webster’s defines HOMOPHOBIA as: “irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals” (Nice, Mister Marshall- what exactly are you scared of, btw? It’s not like you’re gonna “catch the gay” or suddenly start crossdressing.) Why is this a historic victory? Because Roem is now the first OPENLY transgender person to run as such and then be elected to a state legislature in the history of the United States of America. What state did this happen in? MY STATE, Virginia. Oh yeah- Danica is also a writer (award-winning journalist), aaaaaaaand… a singer in a melodic DEATH METAL BAND. By the way, America, THAT is a first, too-when was the last time you heard of a high-level elected official who was a raging Dark Tranquility fan? Or who could discuss Cannibal Corpse in any manner other than a potential court case? So Danica, if you read this, as a fellow Virginian, writer, vocalist in a metal band, & OPEN-MINDED HUMAN BEING- CONGRATS. Good luck, & don’t let the bastards grind you down. You’re gonna need it… (📷: @noisey) #danicaroem

“Finishing” sounds like a worthy goal, t’heck with word count. I’m working on “actually write the transitions in the (far too many) places where there’s a note that says {{fill in}} between scenes.”

I’m wanting to learn Japanese, but I’m hesitant because of previous experiences.

I was in ESL from Kindergarten to 4th grade so I struggled with English greatly in my childhood (even though I’ve been in the U.S. since I was 10 months old), so that is making me feel discouraged that I won’t be able to grasp Japanese fully.

Think of it this way: you’ll be stretching out your brain in a new way. It would probably require going to an immersion program here and then Japan, or a language school there. I was pretty good at one time, but I don’t speak on a significant basis now, mostly just read. I’ve been at it for a long time and I’m pretty sure I’ll never grasp it fully. But I won’t stop trying. I’m going back next year (probably) for couple of weeks. Looking forward to those Japanese language dreams again.

In either case, she’s still probably fired… only for there to be an outpouring of support for her if it’s a legit schism, contrasted with an outpouring of “she’s a RINO dumbass” if she’s going it alone.

To the wingnuts and other party backers you are correct.

Can’t look outside the party politics too much. What is being said at places like the RNC now becomes important for the people inside that have to face the decisions of how much Trump they want on them and what are the costs of stepping away from him and to what degree.

The delicate balance will be party versus voters and who pisses off who more and what that does to everything.

The GOP has got themselves in some fine fix now. They’ve done this to themselves.

Somewhere in the Cincinnati area Johnny Boehner is in an easy chair, with a drink, a cigar, watching the news and thinking about timing.

I never understood that. I get it, jury duty can be boring as hell if you get stuck on a bad trial. But it’s important, and wouldn’t you want decent people willingly volunteering if you wound up in court?

Money. Idaho I thinks pays $15.00 per day, not hour. Some companies don’t compensate employee’s for that lost time. They can’t fire you for fulfilling your your duty (it’s the law), but they don’t encourage it either. Thankfully, my Company does. Bring in the check from the State to prove you actually served and you get paid at your hourly rate while serving as a Jury member.

JEFFERSON CITY — First Baptist Church of Jefferson City hired a woman as its lead pastor this fall and now may lose voting rights at next week’s Tennessee Baptist Convention.

A TBC committee last month deemed First Baptist — which traces its start to the 1830s — is “not a cooperating church” because the Rev. Ellen Di Giosia is its senior pastor.

Though the committee action speaks to a single church, it also goes to the heart of Southern Baptists’ affirmation that only men can pastor a congregation. It also points to the Baptist belief that each church is autonomous and can make decisions without a hierarchy of denominational authority.

I’m not really sure how they could do that. Short of a veto proof majority in both chambers authorizing immediate disarmament of our nuclear weapons program, Trump as commander-in-chief has the authority to use nuclear weapons. Now, if he uses them unilaterally or preemptively, he would be in violation of the War Powers Resolution and probably international law. That might give them the pretext to initiate impeachment, but do we really trust Ryan to not continue licking the shit off of Trump’s shoes?

I’m libertarian in the sense that I approach most issues with the basic question of “what results in the most liberty?” But I’m also Hamiltonian in that I believe in ordered liberty, not license/anarchy, as so many Libertarians do. My gut instinct is that ordered liberty is best achieved by diffusing power as much as possible and where there are concentrations of power, setting those entities against each other.

It wasn’t just subs. Many Americans didn’t know it, but the Russians did, but during parts of the cold war PACOM could launch. It was the ultimate back-up in case DC and the NCA chain was lost.

After the USSR ended, eventually the policies were changed, as well as us and Russians getting rid of most of nuclear weapons.

re: #418 Ace Rothstein

The ‘level playing field’ is a paradigm of regulation. Let’s take football as an example.

The regulations say how big the field is, how many people can be on the field, what equipment is allowed, how long the game is, how the points are scored and everything else about the game. Furthermore there are a lot of people watching to enforce those rules and levy penalties on those who break them.

Football without regulation would essentially be open warfare. It wouldn’t be fun to play, and no one would be a spectator.

So it is with capitalism. No rules equals chaos.
