Incorrect assumptions there. These were not general exchange bankers trading foreign, ie non-Roman, money for locally negotiable money. There were many local variations in Roman coinage from the different provinces, but it was all legal tender anywhere in the Empire.
It is well attested from non-Christian sources like Josephus that the “money changers” at the Temple were engaged in a specialized type of exchange, trading general Roman currency for the two types of coinage, Jewish and Tyrean, that were the only acceptable payment for sacrificial animals at the Temple. This was because the general Roman coinage contained graven images. The priests of the Temple controlled both the special coinage and the supply of sacrificial animals. The latter were sold only at the Temple. The priests had a monopoly on the sacrifice business, they farmed it out to various stall holders, and they were using it to fleece the worshipers with exorbitant exchange rates and prices.

Atheism takes a lot of faith and not all of it good. It has hard edges. It’s a yes/no dogma, right or wrong. So is hardcore right wing (any other religion you want to fill in here). None of them are helpful to the common good of a healthy, multi-cultural world.

What is a “theist god?” Theism is a statement about a person’s belief, not a god’s. I’m sorry to point out that this is a muddled mess.
By the way, a deist is a theist. A deist believes a god exists. The universe is not random, it is governed by physical laws.
That is the standard creationist argument about the Big Bang Theory: That the Universe popped up out of nowhere (define nowhere, do you have a nowhere to compare one to?) The Big Bang theory does not say that. However, the Bible does. As for a god who creates a universe then ignores it, what use is that god?

While the country’s isolation means the risk of contagion to international financial markets is limited, a default could trigger a global rush to seize assets owned by the Venezuelan government and its state oil company PDVSA, and plunge the struggling nation into a full-blown humanitarian emergency.
The only bright spot for Venezuela was Russia saying Caracas had agreed to its terms for restructuring the part of the debt it holds, with an accord to be signed within a week.
“Venezuela has confirmed the conditions that were agreed and so the process will move to a final phase,” minister Anton Siluanov told the Interfax news agency.
Venezuela’s official debt to Moscow stood at $2.8 billion as of 2016, with another $6 billion owed to oil giant Rosneft, which is closely allied with the Kremlin.

The Venezuelan economy is an absolute basket case. It’s probably gonna take them at least generation to recover…..and that’s not going to happen until Maduro goes and some sane people take the helm.

It was a surprise to me, too. I associate the country with oil and minerals, not apples. But what do I know. All of Central Asia is a mystery to me. I met a Couchsurfing couple who backpacked/hitchhiked from their home in Ukraine through a few of the “stans”, entered China in Xinjiang, took the train (wisely) to Sichuan, then resumed hitching across China. They had some wild stories about Kazakhstani hosts and impromptu tour guides.

Politico Magazine has a long piece on why Donald Trump will never lose his core supporters. Its reporter spent time in places like Johnstown, PA, a depressed coal mining town that went solidly for Trump because he promised to bring back coal and steel jobs. Now 10 months into his presidency, the people there see that he is never going to bring back those jobs, but they don’t blame him for it. When the reporter asked people how they would feel if after 4 years if nothing changed, they said they would still love him. When pressed about what his has done for them, the answer was that he hates and battles people they hate, including Democrats, establishment Republicans, the media, Black Lives protesters, and most of all, kneeling NFL millionaires, who they see as ungrateful and disrespectful. In other words, it is all about the culture wars, not economics or even policy. It’s all about hate and he hates the people they hate. You can’t eat hate, but it is a good second choice after food.
Many of the respondents don’t have a clue what they are talking about. One of them said: “Everybpdy I talk to realizes it’s not Trump who is dragging his feet. Trump’s probably the most diligent, hardest-working president we’ve ever had in our lifetimes. It’s not like he sleeps in till noon and goes golfing every weekend, like the last president did.” When the reporter told him that Trump golfs a lot more than Barack Obama, he was surprised. He added that 99% of his TV time is on Fox News. He thinks CNN is definitely fake news. Interviews with many more people gave the same impression, with others saying that his declarations of success are what matter, not actual success. For people who don’t understand why his supporters aren’t shaken by anything Trump says or does, this article is valuable reading material.

I didn’t wear my Agnosticism on my sleeve when my niece got baptized. It was something my brother wanted to do mostly to make my grandmother and his wife’s family happy. I don’t mind religion if it’s a tool to help people. It’s not for me but I’m not going to tell someone that it has no use at all.
Agnosticism, or in my case, Deism, means never having to say you are sorry. I don’t personally believe in a Theist God, who answers every prayer and takes an active role in the affairs of humans. I entertain the thought that there may be a God, however, who created the Universe and does not care about Its creation after the fact. A Prime Mover without a need to fuck with things once it was done, in other words. I also believe it’s possible that there is no God and that the Universe is entirely random, a construct entirely created by an as yet unknown unified field theory and a Big Bang that resulted in us just popping out of nowhere.
I was raised Catholic, and I don’t begrudge anyone their faith, whatever it is, so long as they don’t use it to subjugate, damage, or suppress people who don’t agree with them. I have deep respect for people of faith. It really makes it much easier to deal with the reality of this existence we all share.
Atheism takes a lot of faith and not all of it good. It has hard edges. It’s a yes/no dogma, right or wrong. So is hardcore right wing (any other religion you want to fill in here). None of them are helpful to the common good of a healthy, multi-cultural world.

Deism is quite interesting. It’s a philosophy that as you know a lot of the Founders subscribed to. We have the same thought. I have no problem with religious faith if the person isn’t going to use it the persecute other people. It’s not for me but I don’t feel it’s my place to knock someone’s religion especially if they’re using as inspiration to help people. It’s one thing if you’re doing what you saw E.W. Jackson do yesterday and that’s attack every self proclaimed Christian who voted for the Democratic ticket here in Virginia but it’s another if you’re say like my Dad’s uncle and uses your faith in a poor Louisiana parish or later comforting wounded in action men during the Battle of the Bulge. I personally could never subscribe to outright Atheism because personally I can’t answer that question- Is there God. My answer I don’t think is too complex: “I don’t know if there’s a God but I also only know the one life I’ve got ahead of me. I want to make the most of that and use it to help people. If there’s a world beyond this, okay. If not, that’s that. The one thing I must say I really like about the current Pope is there’s a place in his world not just for other religions but for non-believers. Francis realizes we’re all on this planet together. That our theological choices are but another puzzle in our personal building block. Sounds like you’ve got a busy day and weekend coming up. Have fun.

It was a surprise to me, too. I associate the country with oil and minerals, not apples. But what do I know. All of Central Asia is a mystery to me. I met a Couchsurfing couple who backpacked/hitchhiked from their home in Ukraine through a few of the “stans”, entered China in Xinjiang, took the train (wisely) to Sichuan, then resumed hitching across China. They had some wild stories about Kazakhstani hosts and impromptu tour guides.
I’ve never met anyone from that part of the world. But yeah it’s a mystery to me too. I’d love to learn more about their culture and foodie I am, try some of their cuisine.

I read the Politico article and man it depressed me. Johnstown literally is my maternal grandparents hometown and my dad had some family there too before they went to the cities. It depresses me because so many Johnstown residents have parents or grandparents who were either immigrants themselves or the children of them. My cousin Mike, the Iwo Jima hero struggled learning English when he first got here. The Trumpers of his day resented the Slavic immigrants for “taking their jobs.”

I have been saying exactly this for years. It is a cult of hate. That is all the American Conservative movement is. They are indoctrinated into hate all day, every day. They might be able to be deprogrammed, if you could remove the sources, but how do you remove their access to the internet and TV? They are not redeemable. They cannot be reasoned with. People in power have ways to protect themselves - the system isn’t rigged; it’s fixed in these people’s favor). That too has to change, and it can’t come fast enough.

I grew up as a minority in a neighborhood that was mostly black and Latino. My mom, a widow, could not afford to flee to the suburbs when the other white people left.
We later did, and that is where I found the people the most racist and bigoted.

I”m from Western PA. I saw the hate rise when George Wallace started his 1964 campaign against Johnson. Once Wallace let it out of the bottle it ran wild in Pennsylvania. There are several blue havens in the four corners of the state but once you leave those blue corners the rest of the state is redder than Mississippi!

I have nephews and nieces with disabled kids who refuse to sign up for Medicaid or buy health insurance because the “N-Word” president signed the law. And they sound just like the brainwashed guy in Johnstown who thought Obama was a lazy Oh, you know what N word that idiot wanted to say.
Apple wanted to build a call center in my home town. What did the residents do? They rose up against it. Why? Well, the preachers said they didn’t want a company that “promoted gays and lesbians” spreading their filth in the town. So the council rejected it. The preachers and the marks all rejoiced because they “would rather have Jesus than Satanic employers”.
My home town is economically dead. But they got Jesus and their guns…

There are long-standing rumors that back when Arnold Schwarzenegger was first trying to make the move from bodybuilding (and that documentary) into actual movies he was “willing” to bend over the couch for any director, assistant director, casting director, publicist, agent, agent’s assistant, etc etc etc until he got enough famous enough not to have to do it anymore.
He’s never said anything about it… but if true, it would certainly explain why he didn’t think there was anything wrong with the way he abused multiple crew, extras, supporting cast’s wives and so on once he himself was in a position to fire anybody who’d dare complain.

I think with a lot of these retiring GOPers. They see the writing on the wall. They know they’re going to be primaried or 2018 is going to be an anti-GOP wave.

And then you have committee chairs who will be replaced by someone with less seniority and who are more likely to be products of the GOP Wave of 2010. I know how the folks in Johnstown think because I’ve seen what right wing preachers, hate radio jocks like Jim Quinn and Fox News did to my family. All of them hated the N-Word President. Apple wanted to build a call center in my home town. What did the residents do? They rose up against it. Why? My home town is economically dead. But they got Jesus and their guns…

I can’t imagine being that miserable. I don’t want the policies I want because I want conservatives to be pisesd off. In fact, I’d like to see conservatives see that liberal policies do work and it might make them a little more liberal or open to what we believe in.

Nice thought: but the main problem with that approach on a national-political level in this country is that “policies” are virtually an irrelevance to the hardest of hardcore “conservatives”* - partisan and ideological identifications seem to be far more of a cultural/tribal thing than a political analysis: and said tribe has been -for decades - marinating itself in a self-selecting media brine of hate and resentment: directed in no small part towards liberals (actually strawman caricature “libruls”, but the effect is the same) who that media have relentlessly painted as embodying everything that is Bad Wrong And Evil about America. And unfortunately, that hard core of righties is about 30% of the electorate. Which, given that the other 70% of voters are mainly apathetic or (usually) unmotivated, gives the Hate Tribe a significant political advantage.
*a term which also includes large numbers of reactionaries, extremists and outright bigots, along with genuine “conservatives”: hard to distinguish, though.

All my immediate family were citizens by birth and my mom’s grandparents got naturalized long before her parents were born and the same thing with my Dad’s grandfather. It’s pretty neat to think. My niece is the first American born person on her mom’s side but on her dad’s, my brother’s side, the first person we have naturalized was in 1803.

TrumpFOX effectively motivated his base, while the perceived infighting and ratfucking that accompanied the Democratic primaries made a lot of people indifferent.and apathy is the most effective form of voter suppression.
I think that the VA election also shows that DT is capable of motivating people on the other side of the fence now.
I understand the schadenfreude when seeing Trump voters suffer for their choice. I also understand the desire to redeem the ones who might realise their mistake.
Neither of these is relevant, though. What is relevant is how much cult media they consume. They may be furious at everything Trump does, but if they consume cult media in the months and weeks leading up to any election, they will turn out and vote as they are told. They might tell you to your face every day that they’ve learned, that they realise how awful Trump is now, but if they continue to consume, they will do exactly what they are told to do. To change their vote, they must be deprogrammed. Nothing else will work.
The effect of mainstream media voter suppression through apathy and constant negative messaging about Democrats is also powerful. That, however, might be able to be changed, because mainstream media does not have the same tight message discipline as cult media does. Diminishing that effect and turning out the majority that consume mainstream media is the key to winning these elections. But doing so will involve overcoming or undermining the automatic response of mainstream media to report on whatever cult media tells it to. That’s the difficult part.
