The crowd that believes Bill Clinton is a “rapist” and believes there’s absolutely no way possible that Monica consented because Bill was president…want you believe that a 30+ yr old man was just “dating” women who were almost half his age. And that indecent exposure and corruption of a minor are not enough to disqualify someone from office.

Let’s get Dennis Hastert on the line, I’m sure he’s got an opinion to express on all this…

What’s the old saying about how the only way a GOPer gets in trouble is if they’re caught with an underage boy?

It looks like that’s playing out in real time. The GOP simply doesn’t give a shit that their leadership sexually assaults women, underage girls, etc. They elected a sex predator president and are looking the other way as they hope to elect a child molester to the US Senate.

And then they wonder why people don’t come forward with claims sooner.

The fact that a significant portion of the population excuses this behavior, condones it, or engages in it is why.

Lawyer-type people have looked at it — their Official Opinion is “way past the statute of limitations, but at the time the 14-year-old was illegal and the 16-year-olds were legal.”

re: #37 Decatur Deb

There’s endangering the welfare of a minor (Ala. Code Section 13A-13-6).

Then there’s the following:

Article 4 Sexual Offenses.
Section 13A-6-60 Definitions.
Section 13A-6-61 Rape in the first degree.
Section 13A-6-62 Rape in the second degree.
Section 13A-6-63 Sodomy in the first degree.
Section 13A-6-64 Sodomy in the second degree.
Section 13A-6-65 Sexual misconduct.
Section 13A-6-65.1 Sexual torture.
Section 13A-6-66 Sexual abuse in the first degree.
Section 13A-6-67 Sexual abuse in the second degree.
Section 13A-6-68 Indecent exposure.
Section 13A-6-69 Enticing child to enter vehicle, house, etc., for immoral purposes.
Section 13A-6-70 Lack of consent.

There may be some changes to the laws relevant at the time, but enticing a child to enter house, etc., for immoral purposes stands out, as does indecent exposure, and depending on the specific facts, they we might get into rape, sodomy, or sex abuse.

And while there’s a statute of limitations on prosecuting these cases, there’s an obligation by journalists to inform the public of what would have happened if this case did not get SOL limited.

Life stages vary. As long as they are above the age of consent, I don’t do major generalizations.

I think we can all agree that below the age of consent, no adult has any business doing any kind of sexual anything with a minor.

Yup, I’ve seen a number of those. Basically, if one member of a relationship is under the age of consent, they have to be within a certain number of years in age or it’s statutory. It’s a decent rule of thumb as far as it goes.

Alabama state official defends Roy Moore, citing Joseph and Mary: ‘They became parents of Jesus’

An Alabama state official on Thursday dismissed a Washington Post report alleging that GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore had initiated a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl decades ago, saying there was an age gap between the biblical Joseph and Mary. The Post also alleged that Moore had pursued three others when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s.

“Take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus,” Alabama State Auditor Jim Ziegler told The Washington Examiner. “There’s just nothing immoral or illegal here. Maybe just a little bit unusual.”

Oh Alabama

With the best laid plan
Swing low, Alabama
You got the spare change
You got to feel strange
And now the moment
Is all that it meant

Alabama, you got
The weight on your shoulders
That’s breaking your back
Your Cadillac
Has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Oh Alabama
Banjos playing
Through the broken glass
Windows down in Alabama
See the old folks
Tied in white ropes
Hear the banjo
Don’t it take you down home?

Oh Alabama
Can I see you
And shake your hand
Make friends down in Alabama
I’m from a new land
I come to you
And see all this ruin
What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the Union
To help you along
What’s going wrong?

Yeesh. Reading some of the responses to Yglesias’ tweet. Some are basically saying that there’s no way for ANYONE to have consensual sex with the President, because he’s the most powerful man in the world. Thus, Monica Lewinsky was not able to withhold consent, so their relationship couldn’t be consensual. Presumably this also applies to the First Lady, too, so NO President can EVER have consensual sex.

Okay, I’ve got issues with Bill Clinton around consent, but they’re related to Broaddrick and Willey. Lewinsky? She was 22, perhaps a little naive, but for god’s sake, she joked with friends before starting the job that she was going to earn her Presidential Kneepads. It seems to me the folks pushing this idea are going way beyond reasonable in order to throw shit at Clinton.

And the guy keeps claiming Lewinsky was ‘screwed up for life’. First off, I think Ms. Lewinsky may have a different take, and second, what do you think would be what ‘screwed her up”? blowing the President and then finding, like most mistresses, that he really ISN’T going to leave his wife for you? Or having your name dragged through the mud on national television for a year, becoming a household name, and not in a good way?

BLAME AMERICA FIRST!

See, here’s where Democrats suck at generating outrage. Wingnuts would be all over this if a Democrat said anything like this. Remember the “Obama apology tour?”

Why isn’t every Liberal pundit out there in unison talking about his…
“Blame America First Tour?”

Besides, I don’t know what the fuck he was wanting here from “the past administration.” More regulations on businesses?

Well, first, the only use Donald Trump has for (any) past Administration is as a (negative) example to push the narrative of how bold and brilliant a “deal-maker” he himself is - so there’s that.

But what I can’t see (unless I’m missing some subtle undercurrent here) is WTF Trump intends to DO about “China”. He spent most of his campaign dumping on them for their “unfair” trade policies, and vowing that he (and he alone) would /could “fix” the problem.
Yet other than the usual blather and brag, his Asian trip seems to have produced little in the way of any concrete policy or proposals* - unless he’s planning to spring some big surprise “deal” on the public - and G*d knows what that might entail - to distract from Russiagate and the various Admin scandals.

I know what I would do if I were POTUS: wheedle/badger/bribe the Chinese into making some token gesture about their currency manipulations, or agree to boost imports from the US, or really anything (however trivial) that we and they can actually agree on: and then come back and trumpet my “achievement” to the skies. The media will eat it up, of course, and rabbit on endlessly about what a swell “dealmaker” I was: actual results aren’t even really necessary: since the negatives will most likely not be apparent until after the next scandal breaks…..

However, I don’t see the Trump Gang as even being this savvy about international affairs. Wonder why????

Yup, MRAs and their fellow travellers (conservatives) use that precisely to shut down that conversation.

If a single woman or girl is shown to have exaggerated or lied, then that single instance is extended to all women and girls. They must all be lying, because this one woman or girl did.

Couple that with religion (he can’t have done this because he’s a good Christian and if he did he is forgiven by God) and it makes it extremely difficult for the multitudes who are telling the truth (and when they are savaged by conservatives, for those who haven’t yet spoken out).

Considering the Democratic momentum from the recently-concluded general election, perhaps this business with Mr. Moore will be just enough to push Doug Jones over the line in Alabama.

Perhaps even if GOP voters in Alabama could not bring themselves to vote for a Democrat to save their lives, enough might be disillusioned enough to just say they won’t vote at all.

Moreover, perhaps enough Democrats and nominally independent or usually non-voters will be disgusted enough by this to get to the polls.

While Moore was twice tossed off the state supreme court for violating the law with his Ten Commandments monument nonsense, maybe accusations of paedophilia will be enough for Alabama conservatives to dump him.

We’ll see. I am very disappointed by my Senator Ben Sasse supporting this Dumpster fire of a candidate.

Tomorrow is the Veterans Day luncheon the local public school holds for active duty members, veterans, reservists, and their families.

Last year at a Memorial Day service at our village cemetery, the cemetery board invited a recently retired Navy commander to speak (he is the highest ranking vet in the area).

His speech on Memorial Day turned into a rant against liberals and bathroom laws (entirely appropriate for a Memorial Day service). I was infuriated, and read an alternative speech I would have given at the next village board meeting and asked the cemetery board never to invite him back.

I suspect he will be the speaker tomorrow. Considering the number of transgender candidates that won elections around the country Tuesday, I suspect he will go off on that rant again.

I spoke to my wife just now, and she is in full support, that if he starts in on that nonsense tomorrow I fully intend to get up, put on my coat, and stage a walkout. She says she’ll be right there with me.

Is there a romance between a hot teacher and a 16-year-old teenage boy? No, it’s just him thinking with his hormones. Now don’t get me wrong, teenage girls aren’t necessarily as completely sexually driven as teenage boys, but they’re still in their sexual prime and ripe for suggestion and not in any position to consent to adult relationships.

Clinton: “These women are victims who have come forward to tell their stories! How dare the liberal media question them and suggest they’re lying?! And worse, Hillary not only allowed this to happen, but she attacked the victims for years!!!”

Trump: “We all know women lie about sexual harassment and rape to attack powerful men. We can’t take the word of these women seriously because they can’t provide any proof that Trump did anything to them that they didn’t consent to.”

Cosby: “So what if all these women came forward? They’re gold diggers, trying to get Bill to cut a check to make them go away. You can’t take what they say at face value.”

Weinstein: “This man is a sexual predator and the fact that he was able to go for years without anyone speaking up is an indictment against all of Hollywood! He should be in prison and we should investigate every allegation these women have made to get to the bottom of sexual crimes in Hollywood!!!”

Spacey: “Anthony Rapp was so brave for coming forward and bringing to light this horrible behavior. This is just a further example of how twisted Hollywood is.”

Moore: “Hey now, let’s not rush to judgment. These allegations are so old and the timing of these women coming forward is all so suspect. The 14 year old girl was troubling, but the rest were purely consensual because the girls were old enough at the time. If these allegations are true then it’s troubling, but we can’t take any steps until we further investigate…”

The Ways and Means Committee approved a bill that will put a 20% to anything that’s imported into the US. This hits us very bad: the Jones Act already makes most products more expensive than the States. This will shoot the cost of life, without any relief anywhere else. Salaries will still be below those in the states (for example, teachers here start with around $20k in salary, and a median of around $38k).

What this will cause is greater immigration towards the US, and a death spiral for PR’s economy.

All religions that gain enough members become political organisations. When they are small and weak (like the Baptists after the Revolution), they cry out for protection from the State. When they become powerful, they want to become the State.

The entire history of political activity in the world concerning religious groups is the religious groups attempting to become the State.

Analysis of the wealth of America’s richest people found that Gates, Bezos and Buffett were sitting on a combined $248.5bn (£190bn) fortune. The Institute for Policy Studies said the growing gap between rich and poor had created a “moral crisis”.

“Our wealthiest 400 now have more wealth combined than the bottom 64% of the US population, an estimated 80m households or 204 million people,” the report says. “That’s more people than the population of Canada and Mexico combined.”

More than 40 days after the storm made landfall, 80% is without power (again).

It certainly doesn’t help. The natural disaster, the (non)response disaster (especially at the state and federal levels), and these economic beatdowns. Recovery won’t happen in a long, long time.

I was 18 when hurricane Georges made landfall in Puerto Rico. I don’t remember much, but I’m certain of one thing: the response by the federal and state levels were much, much better. Compared to now, there were many mitigating factors. But the devastation left made a huge impression on me. At this point, we were already much, much better. Even taking into account the higher destruction left by María, the recovery is way behind.

Yesterday I went to Aguadilla, and things there were shocking. I saw a Walgreens with a line waiting to enter the store. People had written on the streets places that needed water, food, and other help, even calling out authorities. And these were places close to the airport, where a lot of aid goes through.

One small detail about the power data: what the government here is reporting is the power consumed, not the houses with power.

(Sorry for the rambling … it’s almost midnight here, and my brain decided to dump core.)

That is really sad. Mr. Hillerman was a native of Denison Texas and lived in Houston after he retired. His Oxford accent was so good that many fans had no idea he was not English. During a couple of episodes of Magnum PI, he played a dual part as Higgins and as Higgins’s half-brother, Elmo Ziller from Texas. It was Elmo’s drawl rather than Higgins’s crafted Oxonian that was Hillerman’s natural accent. I met him a couple of times, a very personable and modest gentleman who nevertheless took obvious pride in his work. RIP, Texan.

Voting for Moore is not indirectly supporting such behavior. It’s making a rational decision between two people based on evaluating factors like who is more likely to fight for the rights of the unborn, for traditional marriage, for religious liberty in this country, for the protection of the 2nd Amendment, for lower taxes, for cutting spending, for protection of our borders, etc. If a politician has done something wrong but will be fighting to make the country a better place I am not “indirectly” supporting his sinful behavior because I vote for him over the person who’s fighting to make the country a worse place.

Good old Sean Hannity, minimizing the 14 year old’s story because the sexual contact with a 17 and 18 year old, (INITIATED BY the 30-year old Assistant District Attorney), was not strictly illegal.

The Religious Right is defined by the way it has taken apart moral constants and substituted a hierarchy in which ritual performance of their kind of piety is the determining variable on who is moral and who is culpable.

If you’re part of the group, you’re always better than the people not in the group. What you did is forgivable, explainable by “temptation,” or necessary.

Though Moore reportedly tried to get the older teens drunk, which was not only illegal. But classic predator behavior

Though important to know even if a 16 year old consents to sex with a 21 year old it can be deemed statutory rape.

So, just a quick observation on Roy Moore before I head off to work

I see that his primary opponent, Luther Strange, dropped some oblique hints during the primary campaign about Moore’s predilections.

Anyone care to wager that Moore’s degeneracy has been a more-or-less open secret in the Alabama GOP for a long time? One of those things chuckled over at the bar over a glass of scotch or discussed privately behind closed office doors?

Depends on the state. In Kentucky it wouldn’t be, except with a teacher or other authority figure.

Cosby, Weinstein, Toback, Spacey, Halperin, CK, Moore.

We’re just scratching the surface here. There’s a good chance many of the actors we like to watch, musicians we like to listen to, athletes we admire and politicians we support are just as scummy as these other guys and have been getting away with it for just as long.

There’s a still a lot of work to do to take down the old boys club.

re: #323 TedStriker

I heard about that, but “harassing” covers a lot of ground, from just being a perfectionist douchebag (as many great actors can be like) to doing like Louis C.K. or what Spacey did with Rapp.

The leader of our movie group is involved with the local independent film industry and is very familiar with these accusations. He said the whole Hollywood industry is rotten to its core and that everyone knew about the bad behavior of these powerful individuals. According to him, the allegations against Spacey — and the others — are true. He is hopeful that finally these criminals will finally be punished, but I am skeptical. The casting couch rumors were around since the beginning of Hollywood; there is always some scandal but it never has any permanent mark and the games will continue.

Maybe enough will come out about Moore so that he will actually be defeated. I was a pessimist Tuesday morning but then there was victory Tuesday evening. Maybe something good will come from Alabama.

re: #402 Big Beautiful Door

Depends on the state. In Kentucky it wouldn’t be, except with a teacher or other authority figure.

Age of consent laws here in Nebraska used to have different ages (girls 17, boys 16). Those were changed to 16 for everyone, with a further clarification that consent could not be given by anyone 15 or younger.

This has led to the problem here of prosecutions of both parties for statutory rape when they are both 15 or younger.

I just want to know if Hannity would be that generous to a well known liberal doing the same. We all know he would not so I have not problem at all with the firestorm against him. Sean is a hypocrite. And he seems more angry at the media than Moore.

It’s infuriating that people are standing up FOR hannity because of what he didn’t say…which is the right thing to do. Hannity would never, ever do the same. And that’s what is infuriating.
