A bit of good news.

A new Alabama Senate poll, conducted Thursday, said the race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones is tied.

Decision Desk HQ sponsored the poll that was conducted by Opinion Savvy.

The poll said Moore had 46.4 percent support and Jones had 46 percent support.

The poll - the first to be released in the aftermath of sexual misconduct allegations made against Moore - perhaps indicates the impact the story on the Senate race. A previous Opinion Savvy poll had Moore ahead by 5.7 points.

Moore will keep shooting off his own mouth, because he can’t help himself. Hopefully, he’ll be digging his own electoral grave in the process.

The fire rises.

The Republican Party’s Senate campaign wing on Friday severed its fundraising agreement with Roy Moore.

Federal Election Commission paperwork filed on Friday showed that the National Republican Senatorial Committee is no longer listed as part of a joint fundraising committee with Moore’s campaign, the Alabama Republican Party, and the Republican National Committee. The other three entities remain in the contract, as of Friday afternoon.

This is what I mean when I talk about Trump misinterpreting the idea of the US as ‘The Indispensable Country’. He thinks it means everyone needs us. That’s not what it means.

Trump thinks it’s still the 1950s, when the US could pretty much demand whatever it wanted from trading partners because we were the only game in town, the only industrialized country that hadn’t had the shit kicked out of it in WWII.

Now? Sure, we’re the biggest market, but we’re not the ONLY market by any means. And if other countries band together like the EU, they have little or no incentive to agree to bilateral trade deals where the US would dominate.

Some reports are already saying that on a PPP basis, China has already overtaken the US GDP; if not yet, then soon. The EU collectively is a trade area that functions as a country (Trump cannot do a deal with Germany). Imperial America is over, we just have the overseas military bases left over from past, er, “glories.”

It’s past time to stop pretending. Trump of course is all about taking names and kicking ass. If we had a real business-like President — say, the Georgian agricultural entrepreneur and veteran (and then humanitarian) whose name no one wants to mention — maybe we’d get an appropriate adjustment. But looking at what happened last year to the wreck of the remnant of the British Empire, it’s hard to be optimistic.

It’s not ever put this way on paper, but…there’s a hierarchy that informs who’s guilty and how much they’re punished, and the rule behind the rules is that the org chart trumps the specifics. It’s a problem that arises in all ideologically-rigid, authoritarian organizations, but it’s especially dangerous when auctoritas is paired with religion, because then there’s this whole supernatural aspect to who gets condemned or “forgiven” where you just run through some superficial rituals rather than put to scrutiny.

On a related note, by Monday there will be a new faux Clinton scandal. It may or may not be a rehashing of old debunked faux scandals, but there will be one, and it will be completely false.

There will be one because Bannon will make one and release it to CNN and other mainstream outlets, telling them to report it. They will oblige and it will fill 90% of news time for the next week or two. And the fact that the next likely Senator of the United States is a pedophile will fade away.

I have long proposed that it’s time men were deprived of the vote for a century or so. (Yes, that includes me, but generally I side with the majority of women.) Now I am thinking about an age cap both for voting and for running for office. 70 is a nice round number. Perhaps we could bring this up at the Constitutional Convention so many old white guys seem to want?

So beyond the obvious moral dimension here, this story is also a great demonstration of the value of running a candidate in each and every race across the country. Beyond holding individuals responsible for their actions and engaging the legal system to the degree possible, we’re going to have to address why this shit is so baked into our culture. Men are going to have to stand firm and call this shit out too. Male victims and survivors also need to be heard and taken seriously and embraced and not made to feel they don’t have a place by our sides. At this point, I think it’s safe to say that if you’re not going to stand against sexual abuse of any kind then you’re suspect yourself.

Per John Cole/Balloon Juice:

The Warrior Canine Connection, a program that uses an army of volunteer puppy raisers, dog trainers and veterans to prepare service dogs for wounded veterans and their families, has been partnering with military facilities in the D.C. region since 2009.

But suddenly — and without explanation — that came to a stop, says Warrior Canine Connection Executive Director Rick Yount.

He said his trainers and puppy raisers at Fort Belvoir and at two locations on the campus of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, were told on Oct. 27 to vacate their offices that afternoon.

The Rude Pundit say things.

Roy Moore: Another Stupid Fucking Republican
Lemme address this to all the right-wing shitsacks desperately dragging themselves across the broken glass of the allegations of sexual impropriety and assault against Senate nominee and repugnant hate-monster Roy Moore of Alabama to defend him:

How many 14-year-olds does a Republican man have to force to fondle his dick for it to disqualify him from office?

This is a legitimate question in 2017 because Joel Pollack, the bearded worm who is a senior editor at Breitbart (motto: “Democracy dies on our website”), really did say about Moore and the woman who says Moore assaulted her when she was 14, “[A]s far as we know, there’s only one relationship that’s been alleged that’s problematic.”

Yes, it is “problematic” that, according to the Washington Post, Moore targeted a 14-year-old girl. It is “problematic” that Moore kissed her without her consent. It is “problematic” that Moore undressed her to her underwear, as he did himself. It is “problematic” that he touched her breasts over her bra and her genitals over her panties. It is “problematic” that he took her hand and used it to grope his cock. All of that is what you might call “problematic” if you’re a nauseating ass-licker whose party’s hypocrisy and criminality apparently have no limits and whose ideology is so corrupt and bereft of reason and morality that you could actually just call forced sexual contact “problematic” in a way that implies that you’re cool with it as long as it’s just one victim.

In other words, fuck anyone who is defending Moore here, and you can fuckin’ well bet that a whole lot of Alabamans are doing that right now because Moore is a man of Jesus or some such shit because he humped a Ten Commandments monument and hates him the gays, and Democrat Doug Jones, who has been on the side of civil rights and environmental justice, is a sinful liberal n*****-lover who will melt your Confederate monuments and re-crucify Christ.

In fact, one of Moore’s defenders brought Jesus into it, of course, because fuckin’ Alabama, man. “Take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus,” said Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler. Ignoring getting the basic Bible shit wrong (God put that fuckin’ Jesus baby in Mary), that’s a creepy goddamn take on the birth of Christ. If what you get from the New Testament is that it’s totally cool to bone a minor, you’re probably reading it wrong.

Of course, both are fine with Moore trying to date a 16-year-old, which, while maybe not technically illegal, is fucking skeevy as all fucking hell.

The other excuses defenders use are equally fucked up. It was a long time ago, some say, blaming the women for not speaking out sooner about something that happened nearly 40 years ago, as if a young girl in Alabama could go up against a district attorney who later became a judge. As if women don’t keep the violence done to them quiet for decades out of fear and shame that has been inculcated in them by male-dominated society that told them to be silent.

Right now former Representative Anthony Weiner, a Democrat, is serving time in prison for sexting with a 15 year-old. Democrats didn’t blink about abandoning Weiner once his insane tweeting came to light.

Meanwhile, with a few exceptions, Republicans merely are saying “if it’s true” Moore should be kicked off the ballot. But Moore, who has come back from more career deaths than John Travolta, is the shit you can’t scrape off your shoes. Motherfucker is already fundraising off the allegations. And if he’s elected and seated (and he probably will be), the GOP will have told us that their tax cuts are worth all the pussy-grabbing and dick-fondling and assault and alleged rapes (by Trump). Who cares about women if the Kochs and the Mercers are happy?

If Jesus came back, he’d look at these motherfuckers and say, “Yeah, turned enough cheeks” before kicking their asses.

Unpopular opinion: I really don’t like Taylor Swift’s over-produced plastic pop pablum, and I don’t understand why so many people seem to think she’s some kind of genius. She isn’t. She’s banal and over-hyped and superficial.

Taylor Swift’s music does nothing for me. Then again while I appreciate the skill behind a lot of the music you post I find a lot of it aesthetically unpleasing. Music is pretty personal, to each their own.

Watters is a troll. Making others miserable is the only thing he gains joy from.

Well done!! It will be interesting to see what the future conversations in your Village will be.

Let’s see if they run me out of town on a rail or no. There are thirty-nine veterans in my village of 128. Knowing I am an atheist and (worse) a democrat, I was elected and reëlected to my village board, so I would like to think that they support what I stand for.

I hope that they will support our action today. By tomorrow morning everyone in the county will know what happened.

Hey though California lizards. Have any of your been to the Jelly Belly factory? My brother was there today with his wife and daughter. It’s a free tour apparently. They really enjoyed it.

Speaking of music, former lead singer of Faith No More, Chuck Mosley died after battling addiction. Got to see him perform back in the 90s - opened for Metallica and Guns and Roses at Giants Stadium.

Damn… RIP

I think she’s a better writer than performer. A certain kind of pop that isn’t to my taste, but she is good at it.

“The Real Thing” was the first album with Mike Patton on lead vocals. Mosley was the singer before Patton.

Semi-off-topic, but I was in the grocery store the other day, and they played FNM’s “Epic” along with the other muzak. Weird moment, but it made shopping fun.

This would be why I don’t participate in a lot of the music discussions here, yes.

We have a pretty wide assortment of instrumentalists here.

I like hearing you and Dave in Austin (IIRC) talking about harps and Anymouse talking about the dulcimer. Those instruments are a mystery to me, and when you guys talk about them I learn something I didn’t know.
