Should I go see this woman sing by myself for free or should I stay at home alone? The style of music is not really my cup of tea.

The election, Trumps actions, the tax screw job and all these sex crimes from familiar faces. I can’t remember ever being more cynical about the inhumanity of the humans that make the big money, become the powerful stars, directors, CEO’s. POTUS. Gah. As was wisely pointed out downstairs, every one of these cretins did major damage to numerous lives. So much has come out it’s sickening. But what we all have not yet come to terms with yet is just the surface is being scratched. I don’t trust the depth or longevity of this recent awareness. I’ll be more impressed when the shift manager at the convenience store won’t leer at the young employee looking for a day off or a shift change. Long ways to go.

Conservatives like Erik see the erosion of traditional gender norms as so personally threatening that they conflate that perception with some undefined harm to the child. When in fact it is the shame and punishment involved in the enforcement of conformity that he advocates for which actually results in the death of so many trans and non-binary kids.

I’m no theologian but wasn’t Mary and Joseph’s relationship well non-sexual. And yeah things do change even if you do believe that story to be 100% true. For me honestly it’s a maturity thing. Most 18 to 22 year olds just wouldn’t be a good match for me on an intellectual and experience level.

If I were suddenly single again the youngest I’d date is probably 26/27 (I’m 36).

Well it was sexual at some point because Jesus had other siblings, but the principal difference between now and then is:

1. Women didn’t have careers, they bore the children and looked after the home while the men worked.

2. Life spans were a LOT shorter and medicine was much less advanced. Marrying women off young guaranteed fertility and the continuance of the human race. In addition, if an average person had 6 children they’d be doing good if 3 of them saw adulthood. There was no choice but to procreate at a high rate given the realities of the time and the MUCH higher childhood mortality rate.

I have no rules of thumb on age gaps.

It’s the people involved that matter. If both parties are consenting adults, it’s up to them. It’s the two adults in the relationship that are either going to make it work or break it.

In my email alerts this morning (China time) was this Guardian article about Trump lambasting the entire APEC assembly about how they supposedly have cheated the USA in trade.

theguardian.com

He included “GYYNA” in that group, just days after he was kissing Xi Jinping’s ass in Beijing. And Tillerson tried to paint over Trump’s bellicosity, but it was too little, too late.

Trump has sunk US relations with Asian countries, probably for decades, maybe forever. China will step in to fill the void, especially as we now have no functioning State Department to ameliorate the damage done.

And even worse, neither Trump nor anybody else in the Administration seems to have even the least glimmer of any sort of alternative policy to propose: insult and bluster might make for good mentions in the RW press ( the MSM will probably ignore it) but sooner or later (likely sooner) somebody is going have to come up with some sort of concrete proposal to deal with the supposed “cheating”. - and short of a tariff war (which the US, despite its enormous market, is unlikely to win), it’s hard to see what “we”, I.e. this idiot regime can do.

There is no question that Xi and the Party bent over backwards to stroke Trump’s ego. The media here (Party controlled, all of them) have depicted Trump mostly in a positive light, which translates into the public believing him to be some kind of honorable leader. At the same time, people get to watch Xi Jinping out-maneuver Trump, as (I believe) it’s an “open secret” here that Trump is a dolt, all bark and no bite.

It’s fifty degrees in the Nebraska Panhandle.

It should be below freezing this time of night.

Lizards. Going to call it night. Off for the next week or so to tend to the Mate. She had to have a biopsy (came back clear), but the opening isn’t healing as well as it should. So I get to go and learn how to properly unpack and pack a puncture wound. This is not going to be fun.

This vid is of a leg wound. Her is is a belly wound. WARNING! NOT FOR THE WEAK OF STOMACH Procedure is the same though.

The E-mail my brother-in-law wrote me a couple years ago when this wingnut spoke at our village’s Memorial Day remembrance. Reading it two years later it still made me cry.

Good Morning James,

Today I honor you. You and your family have been fighting a war without end for many years now. that war is against sorrow. We consider this day a memorial to our soldiers and sailors and airmen who have died in the service of our nation. Instead it is a day when I shed a tear about all of the things that never happened.

I think of a young boy [reference to me] who grew up without a father to teach him how to throw a baseball. I think of a young wife [reference to my Navy veteran mother] who lost her first love, and a daughter [reference to my Army veteran sister] who never had a dad try to braid her hair.

I think of families who forever had their futures changed and who always have an empty place at their dinner table. Holidays are always bittersweet for these veterans of sorrow. The pain is always there, but scar tissue grows around the injury in their souls and allows them to move onward with their disrupted lives, though in the quiet hours of the night, each of these family members has to deal with the unanswered questions of what could have, and what should have been.

When your father’s plane went down, I know his last thoughts were of you and your mom and sister. His sacrifice for our nation cannot be compensated, what he lost is all that a man can hold dear, his life and all that he loved. And each of you, his family also gave our nation something immeasurable in that moment, you lost a piece of yourself and the universe changed as so many possible futures were lost.

I am honored and privileged to know and love you, and to have you as a part of my family.

I understand, but I refuse to believe that our relationship was creepy, or that we lacked shared cultural experiences.

When I was 42 I dated someone 17 years younger than me. We had some significant experiences in common as highly educated immigrants (she from Russia, me from Britain) but I think the fact is that when I saw her, first sight, I saw her as a peer — a very attractive peer. Long-term it didn’t work out, but we were both considering it. Life would have been very different with her and probably we are both better off apart. But these things definitely do happen! And nothing wrong with that. And sorry about your loss. Forty years sounds pretty good to me.

CNN has a video of Republican leaders being questioned about Roy Moore. It’s 44 seconds of them smiling, chuckling, gesturing, and waving off any questions about Moore. I don’t know how to embed CNN videos here so you’re going to have to follow this link to see it. (It’s the second video on the page.)

It’s disgusting.

Even more disgusting is the fact that it looks like a pervert line-up. All these old, white, Republican men thinking this whole thing is funny.

The brakes went on and I told the Mate that we WERE NOT going to do this until I had some training from a qualified professional. If s/he feels I am incapable of doing it, well, we’ll figure out how to proceed from there. I think I can do it. Just need the proper training. It still scares the shit out of me. Probably why I was a Electronics Tech Tech instead of a medic.

Mine won’t. It asks me if I want to do any updating. Perhaps this is a newer thing, but it is what I always liked about Apple. It asked first. Windows would catch me at the wrong time, always, and I was not familiar enough with the interface to know what to do. So now I run Windows programs in Parallels.

Conservatives like Erik see the erosion of traditional gender norms as so personally threatening that they conflate that perception with some undefined harm to the child. When in fact it is the shame and punishment involved in the enforcement of conformity that he advocates for which actually results in the death of so many trans and non-binary kids.

Given my own life experience with how personally people take gender norms, I’d add to the tally a bunch more foreshortened lives. Since it’s not like these fuckers stint themselves when handing down ruling on who gets bullied for being queer.

But if he’s a Trump fan, shouldn’t the multiple bankruptcies lend her credibility?

re: #109 Bubblehead II

Thanks everyone. Have to admit I was kinda blasi (siq) about doing it until it really hit me just what it was I actually had to do.

I hope it all goes well for you and the Mate. But damn it, is there any other country in the advanced world where the spouse or significant other has to perform this kind of medical work, while the pros stand aside because … um, insurance? Even in the middle of the last freakin century this wouldn’t have happened. But we as a nation and as human beings have gone insane about what matters and what doesn’t.

ETA: Couple of wds for clarity.

Trump has this absolutely stupid idea that the USA should strike individual deals with each country, rather than sign a multilateral agreement. Predictably, APEC nations have told him to fuck off, we’ll make our own agreement without you.

IOW, the great dealmaker shot himself (and the USA) in the foot.

Supposedly, the meeting was called off, because the White House said their schedules didn’t mesh.

That means they met.

Yup. I mean, I once removed some stitches from Mr. C. because he couldn’t reach them himself, and yeah, we saved a $25 co-pay, but it also saved a lot of time (driving to the dr., waiting, getting it done, driving home.) I’m not sure I’d want to be packing wounds.

Done it with horses. Could do it with a person. They don’t kick as hard.

Between this and the ongoing feud with Mexico over NAFTA, I hope you mid-west farm boys are enjoying your votes for Trump.

True. I’ve been kicked by a horse. Rather like being hit with a pile driver.

My little contribution to the discussion over age-appropriateness in relationships: Within the limits of legality and without exploitation of one person or the other, I don’t see any reason to draw further lines. And I want to point out that it’s certainly not always older man/younger woman. My third serious lover was exactly twice my age (I was nineteen). And it wasn’t some Mrs. Robinson deal. We met in a philosophy class in college (after two kids and a divorce she was going back). There just wasn’t this sense of, wow, we’re different generations. We gave each other books, I liked the music she liked and vice versa, we both were pretty knowledgeable about things in general, got each other’s references. It lasted for eight or nine months until circumstances that won’t matter to any of you intervened, then we broke it off mutually and amiably. I moved to a distant state and never saw her again. I still think of her with great affection and pleasure in the memories, and if she’s still alive I hope and believe she feels the same.

Veteran’s Day is closing, and the real Armistice Day is about to begin. This group, which did a powerful song about the D-Day landings, also has done a memorial to the Battle of Paschendaele. Note the text .

I’m so glad I’m here at LGF.

Appreciate that Charles made this a home for sanity!

Thanks to Mr. Johnson from me as well, a home for a lonely liberal living in a vast land of wingnuts.
