This is the golden age of political comedy, mostly because there has never been anything like this amount of material.

It makes me wonder what the political post-apocalypse will be like.

I read yesterday that Gov. Anyone can be a write in candidate. Alabama has a sore loser law that prevents his name from being on the ballot if he loses the primary, but if people write him in I think that is fine.

Credulity died.
arstechnica.com

In now-deleted social media images, the Russian Ministry of Defense used what is almost certainly a screenshot from a mobile game as part of its supposed evidence that the United States military was supporting ISIS troops in Syria.

The posts, which went up on Facebook and Twitter Tuesday morning, included pictures that the text described as “irrefutable evidence” of “direct cooperation and support provided by the US-led coalition to the ISIS terrorists.” But as Kings College research associate Elliot Higgins noted on Twitter one of those pictures matches precisely with images found in an online trailer for AC-130 Gunship Simulator: Special Ops Squadron, a little-known mobile game from Byte Conveyor Studios. A warning from that trailer that the video was “Development footage / This is a work in progress / All content subject to change” was only partially cropped out of the Ministry of Defense posts, helping highlight the original source.

The original tweet has since been deleted (archived here) and the Facebook post updated to remove the image from the game. Other images in the posts were seemingly taken from existing footage that the Iraqi Air Force posted of attacks against ISIS and remain up on Facebook.

There are a lot of things Karl Marx got wrong, but religion being the opiate of the people is exactly right.

The idea of rapacious businesses and billionaires convincing scads of voters to vote for them could only be achieved by manipulating religious fears (evolution, “taking God out of schools,” marriage equality, abortion, &c).

If you are willing to uncritically accept one ideology, it makes you a lot more susceptible to other ideologies.

Roy Moore’s lawyer suspended as noted in Alabama Lawyer was for an ethics violation.

He allegedly called a mother of a child who was killed, one day after he was killed, offering his services as a pastor and a lawyer. He repeatedly called her back, claiming he’d spoken about to her husband and it was okay.

So he’s not an ambulance chaser, he’s a hearse chaser.

Most of my family was apolitical before the election last year. I did lose one, a cousin in Michigan (all my other cousins wrote me off decades ago for being an atheist) who voted for Dr. Jill Stein.

We used to talk regularly; I stopped in to visit her during our last trip to Canada (that was way we went so far out of the way to Michigan). Day after the election, the calls stopped. She has not answered my calls, has not answered many written letters. I am now of the devil because I supported Sanders, then Clinton as the primaries wound up.

Most of my family is sane. My brother is what I call a half-hearted wingnut—he spouts the bullshit, but backs down quickly, and I think he mainly is a wingnut once-removed because he’s sort of afraid of crossing his banshee wife, who is a full-throated, certified right-wing lunatic. The two of them are vastly outnumbered at any family gathering (including disdain from their own children.

The most amusing thing is my sister, who was totally non-political and tried to avoid any political conversations—until last year. Now, she will get right into my sister-in-law’s face and tell her she’s full o’shit. It is a thing of beauty to witness. Yep—my 74-year-old sister has found her political voice!

If so, I hope every night for them is a long, sweaty sleepless affair.

One possible good thing coming out of this: Men who have similar pasts and much to lose will be more reluctant to throw their hat in the political ring due to fear of being exposed for what they really are, thus keeping them out of positions of power. It won’t stop the unthinking power-hungry, woman groping asshole from running for office but then again, nothing else has stopped that kind of asshole from anything, anyway.

As for the issue of men who find themselves in that position (victim), I was sort of hoping that the Kevin Spacey revelations might create a similar tidal wave from men. However, while women will reinforce each other (generally, and with some men on their side) to amplify their voice (see the recent Me Too hashtag over at Twitter), it is still too much social stigma for men to do that sort of thing. Perhaps in the future, but not likely in my lifetime.

I did note when that hashtag was trending that the few men who ventured in with their own stories of being assaulted or harassed were quickly attacked as “this is our safe space, go get your own.”

Founder of Florida’s biggest megachurch accused of molesting a 4-year-old girl

Pastor Robert Coy, the former Las Vegas casino entertainment director turned religious leader for one of Florida’s biggest megachurches, has been accused of molesting a 4-year-old girl.

Coy, who resigned from Calvary Chapel in April 2014 under circumstances that church leaders then called a “moral failing,” was named to police in 2015 as the man who molested the child, according to police reports first reported Tuesday in Miami New Times.

Coy has not been charged.

The 2014 “moral failing” reportedly had to do with adultery and pornography rather than molestation, the reports of which did not surface for another year.
Here’s some insight into how these people think:

Calvary attendee Debbie Polcino, a former wife of a preacher herself, said she wasn’t surprised by the 2014 revelations of adultery, and they didn’t change her opinion that Coy is “an anointed man.”

“You really felt like you were sitting there and he was talking directly to you,” she said. “Everyone loved him.”

I brought this up before, but did not really clarify what this legislation proposes to do.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE2) brought forth a bill to correct a problem that occurs with Gold Star Families concerning access to military facilities and benefits.

It is a small loophole, but significant (my mother fell into this problem after my father was killed). The problem is when a dependent spouse remarries (a non-military person). At that point, the spouse is banned from entering a military installation (they lose their benefits by remarrying). The children of the first marriage do not lose their benefits; however, they cannot use them if they cannot get on the base.

That includes some rather personal things such as when the parent is buried in a military cemetery on the base (and they can no longer access it because the surviving parent is barred from using the base), &c.

Rep. Bacon’s bill seeks to correct that by issuing a Gold Star Family ID card to such parents, specifically to allow children who have military benefits from combat deaths of a parent to continue to maintain access to a base.

I wrote my representative a couple months ago (Adrian Smith, R-NE3, “I only represent Republicans”) urging support of Representative Bacon’s bill, but heard nothing back from him at all (I am on the “shred before reading” list at his office.)

I must have the most boring family of all time. We all pretty much get along. I can’t remember there ever being a real argument over Thanksgiving dinner and we usually have about 30 people in the house for that.

There was this Russian guy who said something like that:

“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is un-happy in its own way. Everything was in confusion in the Oblonskys’ house. …”

Where I grew up, all the fathers went off and worked (mostly at the steel mill) and the mothers who were not full-time housewives had secondary jobs and not careers in the modern sense.

I do not look on these as halcyon days, but it was a time when white people were breeding a lot more than they are now.

But instead of seeing it in terms of the decline of the labor market and its ability to offer jobs with a living wage, conservatives offer a “moral” argument and place the blame on feminism and liberalism for driving women away from their role in the house and home.

Ready for that first laugh of the day?

A pro-Trump opposition researcher who worked with the late GOP operative Peter Smith may have sparked the communications between Donald Trump Jr. and the self-proclaimed transparency organization WikiLeaks, Business Insider reports.

The day before Wikileaks first reached out to Trump Jr. via direct message on Twitter, Charles “Chuck” Johnson, a notorious right-wing blogger who founded the website gotnews.com, published an article claiming he know about “a George Soros-tied PR firm that is launching a website to spread conspiracy theories about Donald Trump’s connections to Russia.”

If Chucky’s antics succeed in puting Don Jr behind bars, I may die laughing.

The French refused to go along with a useless war that we started and that made them the object of hatred for millions of frothing idiots.

I still make jokes about it to my kiddies (who live in France), we were driving past a military base with a field full of cows outside it: I explained (ironically of course) that the cows were there to make them cheese that they were to eat after they surrendered.

One can get into big trouble over that sort of humor. Remember that the original lyrics to “Get Back” were ostensibly directed at Pakistani immigrants: not that the Beatles were racist in that sense, they were making fun of people like Enoch Powell and the fictional Alf Graydon (on whom the character of Archie Bunker was based).

But they realized that a lot of people would not get that nuance and changed the lyrics to something slightly less controversial.

I can’t help but be sputteringly frustrated at the fact that, with the Moore allegations coming more and more to light, Obamacare Repeal Redux Chapter 50 gojillion, a tax bill that would be the specter of trickle down times god-knows-how-much, we’ve managed to have all the political oxygen taken up with…

…retrying Hillary and Bill for the latter’s indiscretions, and making him ‘finally pay’, as if the both of them haven’t been tried and retried and investigated and re-investigated (and re-re-re-re-investigated) countless times before.

Holy fucking hell. I get about taking sexual assault seriously. That’s exactly why Moore is in the hot seat now, Spacey’s career is all but done, and Weinstein is leading to larger scrutiny of ‘casting couch’ culture in Hollywood. You know the difference between all of those and the Clintons? None of those received anywhere near the amount of scrutiny Bill’s issues did, even now when all things have come to light.

Is it clear that Clinton is a philanderer? Goddamn, yes, that’s not the point. The point is trying re-crucify him for assault charges that even Ken Starr’s crusade couldn’t pin on him. And yet we’re suppose to ignore everything fucking else for the sake of apparently purging the Democratic party of the evil that is the Clintons because fuck-all.

This shirt reminds me way back of something in comics in the aftermath of the good ol’ WoT. Ultimate Marvel (the parallel soft-reboot of the mainstream Marvel books) its Captain America taunt an enemy by pointing to the A on his helmet and screaming ‘Do you think this stands for France?!’, as a statement that he wouldn’t give up, in an obvious jab to the French for supposedly being cowards. In response, the then-writer for the mainstream Captain America had him go on an illustrated monologue about the bravery of the French soldiers he fought beside in WWII, as a total contrast.

It’s not just the Republicans pushing this shit. We’ve also got the Bros and other gullible morons going that there needs to be a “reckoning” for the DNC over the failure to have Bill drug out of the White House by his nuts. Starting with their demands that Hillary take responsibility for not messily divorcing him as they wanted back in ‘98.

I don’t get it. I simply do not fucking get it. Holy fuck will I never get it.

It’s all called Dirty Politics. It is nothing new, just something many of us hadn’t had to face at this level in our lives.

Yeah it sucks.

But we are a Democracy (still so far) and it is up to us to fight back. Or, it all goes away as we knew it.

People who call the French cowards have no idea about places like the Somme, Ypres, or Verdun. Or that entire villages in France lost their entire young male population due to war. I mean yeah I’ve joked about the French too but I respect them far more than the Keyboard Warriors who hated on France for not supporting Iraq.

Moore continues deflecting and projecting on to others all while the GOP continues to rally around him (with enough people claiming plausible deniability that they think they’ll be insulated from the accusations that Moore was a child molester and that they’re condoning child molestation and sex offenders).

Congress continues shielding members from sex harassment, paying out millions in claims over the past few years. We should know who they are. We’re paying those bills - and these are our representatives.

I don’t care who they are - Democrat or Republican.

So yeah, Franken needs to explain himself.

About 10 years ago, I ran the numbers of French casualty figures from WW2, from the opening of hostilities to France’s surrender; I can’t remember the exact numbers now, but in a nutshell, French forces were taking pretty much the same rate of daily casualties during WW2 that they were taking during WW1.

This was simply unsustainable - the French had been bled white during WW1 and as you pointed out, some villages in France lost their entire young male population during WW1. By the time WW2 came around two decades later, the French were already at a serious numerical disadvantage.

There was a whole variety of reasons behind France’s capitulation in WW2 - but cowardice isn’t one of them.

Yeah, especially when Germany’s offensive plan (devised by a Wehrmacht officer named Falkenhorst, IIRC) consisted of going around the Maginot Line.

It was actually based off the Schlieffen Plan of WW1, but with the addition of a massive column of tanks punching through the Ardennes, which the French had mistakenly assumed was all but impossible.

And here’s how it will play out, assuming he did it:

Franken: I did some things I shouldn’t have done. I want to apologize.
GOP: He should resign.
Democrats: What about Moore? What about Trump?
Media: In the interest of fairness, Franken should resign.

Franken: I’m resigning.
GOP: Yay, we can elect Moore and keep Trump in office. And pass tax cuts, and restrict voting, and end Medicaid…

Franken should explain himself, but steel yourself for the fact that dealing with this will only play out on one side of the political spectrum.

Why?

Weight of evidence.

Dozens of women come forward against Weinstein, and we now believe them in total. Why? Weight of evidence.

Dozens came forward against Trump, but GOP defends. Why? Because he’s got a (R) after his name. Same with Moore, even though the evidence points to him being a child molester/pedophile.

Did Franken harass/attack women? Yeah, I’m betting he did, and the photographic evidence is just one part of it.

By “get away with,” what they mean is he retained the presidency and refused to resign, which in their minds was what the whole mess demanded of him. That here remained in office is (in their minds) proof that he “got away” with the way he allegedly treated those women.

It’s also time for behavioral economists, HR departments and others to take note that “oh, women just quit their jobs to stay home with the kids, that’s why they don’t earn as much” is a little more complicated than maternal yearnings…

How many of Weinstein’s victims, how many former congressional aides, how many bankers and lawyers and chemists were just so ground down by the constant harassment that ‘stay home with with the kids’ just made for a no-drama excuse to give up their careers?

My worry is that, in the political sphere, Dems will reckon with those accused on their side (as they damn well should), and Repubs will circle the wagons and ride out the storm to reap the political benefits in the end as their opponents actually pay and accept the consequences coming to them. Because that’s how this bullshit tends to work out in the end so damn often.

re: #312 sagehen

Bill Clinton didn’t “get away with” any damn thing.

Every accusation was thoroughly investigated by highly-motivated, well-funded teams with subpoena power. There was the impeachment, trial, loss of law license, enormous legal fees, a year that he could barely do his job because he was spending so much time on the investigations, the diminishment of his value as an endorser or campaign surrogate for candidates who’d have kept his policies in place if they won, the damage to his wife’s career…

No “getting away with” to be seen.

The whole world was screwed because Bill couldn’t keep it in his pants. With no scandal, there would have been no President GWB, no Iraq war, a lot more people would still be alive, and we’d be in less debt. The only people who got away with anything were the Republicans that got us into Iraq.

A few days ago I requested a membership in the Illuminati and I have received an email response.

I’m a citizen liaison from DØDIS: the Illuminati’s Department Of Distribution. We were recently informed of your interest in joining the Illuminati and becoming part of our global unity of citizens.

As you may have seen, thousands of citizens worldwide have chosen to display their loyalty to the Illuminati by wearing a necklace called the Illuminati Talisman. This pendant is crafted in a variety of metals and shows the Illuminati’s symbol: the Pyramid, the Eye, the Light, and the Eternal Circle.”
dodis.co
The Talisman is an outward, physical sign of a person’s commitment to the Illuminati’s tenets and the betterment of the human species. It is a beacon that helps identify others who believe as you do - a unifying symbol that makes your allies easier to find even amidst this planet’s darkest times.
Be careful when others offer the Talisman online. The Talisman is intended for citizens of all levels, and thus the Illuminati does not condone resale of the Talisman for high prices. All proceeds from Illuminati items go to the designers, illustrators, editors, printers, and other associates involved in their production.
Citizens are encouraged to wear the Talisman only when they feel they are ready. There are no formal oaths or vows required. It is a first step for those who seek further understanding of the Illuminati and wish to join our global unity.

We are always watching out for you.

At the moment. But as we’ve seen, its rare that there is only one incident. Its likely that there are other women Franken took advantage of, and they may well start coming out of the woodwork soon. And we must not start making excuses for people just because of their politics. Then we risk losing all of the energy women around the country are generating in this moment, if the Democrats appear to be just like the Republicans in protecting our own accused of exploiting women.

A Christian “family values” Republican lawmaker has stepped down from his post in Ohio’s state House over revelations that he engaged in “inappropriate conduct” with another man at his legislative office, said The Columbus Dispatch on Thursday.

Wes Goodman, 33, a married former aide to U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), submitted a two-sentence resignation letter to the state Republican Party on Wednesday after a meeting with state House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger (R).

“I was alerted to details yesterday afternoon regarding his involvement in inappropriate behavior related to his state office,” said Rosenberger in a statement on Wednesday. “I met with him later in the day where he acknowledged and confirmed the allegations. It became clear that his resignation was the most appropriate course of action for him, his family, the constituents of the 87th House District and this institution.”

No charges of harassment or abuse were filed against Goodman. The details of the incident are not clear, but apparently a witness to the two men’s liaison reported Goodman to House Chief of Staff Mike Dittoe on Tuesday.

From ThinkProgress:
Court documents show key claim made by Roy Moore’s attorney was a lie

[…]
“As it turns out, in 1999, Ms. Nelson filed a divorce action against her then-husband, Mr. Harris,” Jauregui said Wednesday. “Guess who that case was before? It was filed in Etowah County, and the judge assigned was Roy S. Moore, circuit judge of Etowah County. There was contact.”

There was not contact.

The details of the case were first exposed by a pseudonymous Twitter account, which dug up the documents from that divorce action. ThinkProgress independently verified the full, unredacted case file, which shows there was no occasion for Moore and Nelson to cross paths. […]

The documents do show that Nelson, then Beverly Harris, filed a divorce action against her then-husband in May of 1999. All of the initial documents, however, were signed by a different district judge, W. D. Russell. On May 25, 1999, Judge Russell scheduled the first hearing for the case for June 16.

May not necessarily apply in this case, but I’d be careful about this type of rationale for disproving inappropriate behavior in general. People who abuse power do it in weird and very open ways. Some people even love going back to the scene of the crime. Some love to brag on a tour bus. Some love to re-abuse their victims in various ways.

So now it’s bye-bye Senator Franken and welcome to the club, Senator Moore.

We are so totally fucked.

I can’t see Franken resigning over this because of two circumstances - first, it happened while he was a private citizen before he ran for any elected office, and it was more of an inappropriate behavior than a sexual assault situation (although the alleged kissing incident can be considered borderline on that). No indecent exposure allegations like have surfaced against some of his comedy peers from the period, and there haven’t been any allegations of threatening victims to keep silent. Also, unlike Moore, we aren’t talking about him stalking and attempting rape on minors.

Very likely scenario is that he will be officially censured by the Senate and will have to provide restitution - and unlike others I would imagine that he would do the right thing and do this out of his own pockets versus using the public fund.

(and i am not mansplainin’ or excusing)

at this point we dont know whether his behavior was a one off or not.

the picture appears to show no actual contact.
franken seemed willing, in fact eager to have it witnessed by those who took the photo and recorded (and he gave her a copy)
that (to me) argues against any kind of assault.

you cant drop franken and moore (or trump) in the same basket and call their behavior the same.

I hate it, but Franken executed a premeditated plan to sexually assault a woman by sticking his tongue in her mouth. Its absolutely unacceptable behavior.

re: #409 Skip Intro

He needs to resign, SOON!

We don’t need this shit to give trump and his party of psychopaths cover.

Giving Republicans ‘cover’ needs to stop being a factor in any calculation. It is irrelevant for several reasons. Firstly, adding that sort of political calculus to a matter of right and wrong is unnecessary and tangential to the most important thing, which is the behaviour of the accused and the violation of the victim or victims. It’s about right and wrong, not about politics. Similarly, whether he would be replaced by a Democrat, Republican or space alien is similarly irrelevant. It’s about right and wrong.

Secondly, these are fascists we’re talking about. The behaviour of their enemies is completely irrelevant as to whether or not they attack. Even if there is nothing to accuse, they will make up accusations. Benghazi. Uranium One. Loretta Lynch conspiracies. It doesn’t matter whether Democrats are corrupt or pure as the driven snow. Just as it doesn’t matter if counterprotestors are completely peaceful or actually punch Nazis, they will make an excuse to attack, take away civil rights, or anything they damn well please. What matters is whether or not the news media hammers away at a story or not, and the narrative that is created, and the actual behaviour is similarly irrelevant to that as well. Email servers and fake Benghazi scandals were a narrative for over a year, based on essentially nothing. The media made that a narrative because they were instructed to by Bannon and because of their pathological hatred for Hillary Clinton. My point is, forget about the optics or concerns about how Republicans will spin this. These people are fascists. They do not need reality to base their attacks on. What matters is what should always matter - ethics, morals, and truth.

With that said, I don’t believe at this point that this is something that Franken should resign over. There may well be more accusers. It may well come to light that this is a pattern of behaviour. Even this one accusation is gross and shameful, and very disappointing. But it is several orders of magnitude away from the behaviour of other serial abusers that have come to light recently. Am I upset with Al Franken? Definitely. But I’d still vote for him if it were up to me. By itself, this one event is not enough for me to drastically change my opinion of his character. I understand that others may draw the line differently.

That’s the thing about the “not all girls are innocent at XX age” type argument- it implies that the majority of girls are innocent- and that is exactly who the law is meant to protect. Katie Hopkins can boast all she wants about underage consensual sex, but the law is there to protect those who are not mature enough to give consent.

Note, also, how it’s the girls that have to prove their innocence in this context. Ditto LGBTQ, and indeed anyone who’s not a heterosexual male.

Part of the reason Republicans are masters at this is they don’t run around jumping at everything. Hell, look at Moore. There are multiple women, there’s plenty of evidence. He denies it, and even with the mounting evidence, Republicans are reluctant to disengage.

According to court documents, the odor coming from the closed front door took the breath of several adults and at least one investigator reports the smell of animal waste was on her clothing after she left the house. The house is in the 2100 block of 65th Street, according to the court documents.

A lizard? I had a bunch of animals living in my house but I got some “Just one Bite” mouse pellets and the unwelcome varmints went away. I tried old fashioned spring traps but modern trap-savvy mice could apparently just nibble the bait right off the pedal without tripping it. Evolution seems to have produced not a better mouse trap but a better mouse, hence the resort to chemical warfare.

Part of the reason Republicans are masters at this is they don’t run around jumping at everything. Hell, look at Moore. There are multiple women, there’s plenty of evidence. He denies it, and even with the mounting evidence, Republicans are reluctant to disengage.

They are masters because they’re allowed to get away with it.

Yep. Conservative politicians appeal to a different kind of voter, one that only cares about bringing their version of the Taliban into power, and enslaving pregnant women to a theocratic state. Liberal politicians appeal to people who have values that make being a child-molester unacceptable.

This is a bizarre story-“reformed Baptist” pastor JD Hall, proprietor of the Pulpit & Pen blog, went out to another church on Tuesday night, stood up during the service and denounced a pastor for the sin of being female and being a pastor.

inforum.com

For the record, the church isn’t all that great either. They had Rodney Howard-Browne as a speaker that night and Howard-Browne is a huge supporter of Trump.

Now I’ve picketed churches but I’ve never invaded a church like this. Of course the attendees are going to be unsettled.

In my opinion, not acting like that joke about sexual assault would ever be funny and not giving life to the old memory slip line would be starters. Also stronger apologies to Leeann seems reasonable.

I think a much better statement was possible.

What if his statement was softer for the public and he actually contacts her privately as he should.

Does the whole world need to hear the apology or just that he is making it?

Also…time. Let’s give this some time and see where it goes.

Belafon  Nov 16, 2017 • 10:55:42am

There are multiple things we’re arguing about, and while they’re intertwined, we need to keep cognizant of what we’re arguing:

1. The allegations and evidence against Franken.
2. How Conservatives will react.
3. How women will react.
4. How it will affect Democrats, which in turn affects elections.

I pretty much don’t give a shit about number 2, especially Fox conservatives. The only conservatives I care about are those that might vote for a Democrat next year.

As for number 1, we need to take them seriously. But, like Moore, we don’t take them at face value. What the Washington Post did on him was a serious investigation. Let’s have one.

As for how women will react: I’m not a woman, but I would hope that they are seeing it being taken seriously, but also being handled responsibly.

And yes, with it being politics, we always have to think of politics.

Your comments suggest that you want him to resign primarily because of worry about the political response by Republicans. I submit to you that this is a pointless line of thinking, because the political and media attacks by Republicans do not require facts to be based on. They are creating a uranium scandal out of thin air right now. They ran attack ads for eight fucking years based on the idea that Barack Obama was a Muslim born in Kenya. Should Obama have resigned, or not run, the moment the photo of him in Muslim garb came out, because they might run attack ads on it? Should he have resigned or not run the moment he admitted to doing cocaine as a young man because they might have run attack ads on that?

If what Al Franken did to this woman is far enough over the line that you think he should end a distinguished Senate career on the moral failing of this alone, that is your viewpoint and I respect that. But if your main concern is what Republicans might say about it, then I think your concern is misplaced.

There is still a huge problem there and at least Franken addresses that in his statement.

I’m am not making any excuses. In fact, I think it now best to watch what is going on and comment less. As I said, it is going to get ugly. It could get ugly right here because this is a super-charged issue.

It has been building and building since at least the mid-60 and the “free love” era of hippiedom, women’s rights, birth control and abortion clashing with old time America and religion.

It is coming to a head right now.

All I know is I have nothing to hide in my own life. I was very aware of these issues back in junior high and I have always treated all my female friends with the utmost respect.

It is a major fact of why I stayed single because I admit I have been very confused by sexual politics in relationship due to the era I grew up in. I know too many guys that were like Moore and others and I couldn’t be and is just added to the confusion.

I have posted about that in the past here. It would take a book to explain my decisions, but I can be certain I never hurt anyone. I think I may have been hurt and then hurt myself. But I am not complaining. It has all been my choice.

I sleep well at night!

Fortunately for all of us, I think the majority of us are likewise.

However, as you note, once the very strongly gender-asymmetric society started to change into one in which women are thought of as equal to men, we are slowly discovering how widespread it is that men in various positions of authority have treated some women more as property than people.

I’d like to point out that the picture we all see contradicts the statement by the alleged victim. In the photo, on closer inspection, Franken doesn’t even appear to be touching her, let alone grabbing her.

That’s what I said above (after not reading the article, sorry again!) and then reading that Roger Stone had this out before anyone? I am having a hard time with this.

Franken was a comedy writer and a lot of comedy is really sexist (Andrew Dice Clay anyone?) Now I cannot say whether he stuck his tongue in her mouth (which is fucking gross and disgusting) but that picture is in bad taste, but not assault.

And Roger Stone? I was struggling with the picture alone, but once Stone enters the picture, I just got a huge amount of disbelief. IF Stone did have this information before it was released anywhere, this is a political hit.

Remember Uranium One? Remember Solyndra? Remember any of the other made up scandals?

Cult media is still milking Bill Clinton. It’s still milking JFK. They will always have attack ads to run, because they don’t have to be based in fact at all, or logic. Trying to give them no attack ads is futile.

Worry instead about minimising their impact, or drowning them out with turnout, and facts.

I made a little addition.

No questioning Kaine’s decency and smartness. But I think we have reached a point in history where its no longer acceptable for the Democrats to have an all-white ticket running for President/VP. And part of why Clinton lost was a drop-off in African-American voter turnout. In 2020, we absolutely have to have a person of color on the ticket.

I’ve been saying this from day 1. No matter how much I thought Menendez was dirty, McDonnell meant he was going to avoid a conviction because the Supreme Court screwed up with their treatment of public acts by officials.

Correct. Thanks to the Supreme Court, unless you have a tape of Briber handing over a wad of cash saying “I want you to vote for X in return for this money” and the Politician saying, “OK, I will vote for X in return for this money”, conviction is virtually impossible.

However, if it was a one time thing and since he has apologized fully and the apology was apparently accepted, I’m going to let the senate do whatever it does. If a pattern emerges, that will be a totally different thing.
If he had any sort of presidential ambitions, I think they would be dead, but he has always maintained that he doesn’t.

re: #636 Renaissance_Man

In some ways, that’s a fundamental of the human condition. Power and sex have always existed on the same spectrum, with both desirable and undesirable interactions. We’re finding, unsurprisingly, that many men have used that authority abusively.

We were all supposed to be prepared for when an allegation was to be brought against a Democrat, but think about this: I suspect we will soon hear about an allegation against a female, probably a professional, not necessarily a politician. And if you don’t think it won’t happen, think of the female teachers who’ve taken advantage of students.

Alabamian for Thanksgiving.

And the big football game between two big Alabama SEC college football teams…Alabama and Auburn…known as The Iron Bowl.

They probably think people aren’t going to pay attention to anything else until that is over that weekend.

Well, yes.

But I meant in the aspect of sexual impropriety and qualifications for office.

His apparent sexual proclivities mean he is not qualified to run his church’s choir. His proven sick ideology means he is not qualified to run the country.

If he disappears from the political scene, nothing remains of this except a miniscule chance that he might be prosecuted for past crimes.

Looks like the tax bill has all kinds of knock-on goodies to consolidate the power of the super rich.

re: #643 MsJ

I don’t know what that means.

That is truly the most important thing that happens in Alabama each year, on Thanksgiving Day. It was being used to explain away a very low level of Democratic GOTV in this part of the state.

Or in the business world.

Sure it is disproportionately men, but there are powerful women that can abuse their power too. And sadly there are always people that will do whatever for a move up…so they too can have some power.

BBL
Need to go look at cars with Mr. C. In the rain. I’d really rather stay home with a cup of cocoa, but needs must and all that. At least I won’t need much of a test drive since I’ve driven my brother’s very similar car. Mr. C will need to get behind the wheel, though. I guess we’ll get a chance to see how the windshield wipers work.

re: #627 Aucun pays pour les vieux ennemis

Full self-determination for women is an extreme position now. WTF?

Why Can’t More Republicans Back Doug Jones? One Word: Abortion (The Daily Beast)

According to the GOP it means abortion even if the woman has gone into labor in the 9th month of pregnancy. Because apparently they think women get pregnant and carry babies to term just for the thrill of aborting it as its being born.
