I’ve driven through Louie Gohmert’s northeast Texas Congressional district a lot over the years, going to visit in-laws in Mississippi. Most of his constituents are poor to middle class workers whose real interests he, along with the rest of the GOP, is actively damaging. But they’re entertained by his stupid performance art, and think because he talks about God that he’s on their side.

I think that’s the most sad thing about the GOP base. These are people who are actually pretty hurt by GOP policies but they keep on voting for these guys because they hate liberals, Democrats, and liberal policies that much more.

I’ve been reading pieces from women arguing against Franken resigning or being given the boot. But they all contain the tacit assumption that he can no longer be a leader on womens’ issues. I’m not so sure. In fact I could see how just the opposite could be true.

Let’s assume for the moment that there are no follow-on accusations, that this is as bad as it gets.

Franken COULD take the position that we need to be and do so much more, because even men like him who strive to be allies may fail, by presuming consent, by taking silence as assent, by failing to realize the damage something that seems playful can do. That seems a better way back from the wilderness than keeping his head down for two years and hoping everyone forgets. He has to answer any question about it not only with a ‘mea cupla’, but also follow up with what it means that even men of good conscience fail and how that hurts women and what we need to do to stop it.

Former state Sen. Ralph Shortey agrees to plead guilty to child sex trafficking charge

OKLAHOMA CITY — Former state Sen. Ralph Shortey has agreed to plead guilty to a child sex trafficking offense for offering to pay a 17-year-old boy for sexual “stuff” last March.

In exchange for his guilty plea, federal prosecutors have agreed to drop three child pornography counts against him.

A jury trial for Shorty had been set to begin Dec. 5 in Oklahoma City federal court. He is now scheduled to plead guilty Nov. 30 instead.

The RR as you know Joe combines the worst elements of social conservatism with the worst elements of right wing economics. It’s so messed up. I was at a Catholic mass a few years back and I almost wanted to walk out when the Priest used the Christmas Eve mass to whine about Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.

I was at a Catholic mass a few years back and I almost wanted to walk out when the Priest used the Christmas Eve mass to whine about Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.

My ex-boyfriend called me up last Sunday to ask me to dream up a name for his new consulting LLC. After I did that, I asked him where he’d gone to church this weekend. Well, he’d gone to the very liberal Methodist church Sunday morning, which is a newish thing since he has been so much a “I must go to mass every Sunday” Catholic. Then he said, “I went to St. XXXXXX’s [name omitted to protect it from vilification for stupidity] on Saturday night and I really don’t want to tell you about it because you’ll get upset.” Well, I finally pried it out of him: since it was Memorial Day weekend, the church had an American flag on a stand up at the altar AND an American flag in the back of the church and there was some overwhelming patriotic nonsense during the mass.

I wasn’t upset; instead I said to him, “I’m having trouble peeling my hand off my face from all the facepalming.” But the bigger point is that Christianity in America is in grave trouble when nationalism is more important than Jesus.

It’s like when you’re parents leave for the weekend and within minutes you see they left the car keys to the minivan, you find Dad’s porn stash, and you realize he just stocked up on whiskey.

So you stand there for 20 minutes with this dumb smile on your face asking yourself ‘how can this be real? This is too good to be true.’

That’s how I feel about the Pence Rule.

Earlier this month, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio complained about wealthy Russians like Abramovich planting their roots in his city.

De Blasio said these Russians ‘basically stole the wealth of their country with the help of their government’ and are now using those ‘ill-gotten gains’ to buy a lot of property, which he called a ‘problem’.

Abramovich reportedly made his fortune in rigged privatized auctions.

‘I don’t like it one bit. I wish I had a specific law or approach to address it. I haven’t found one yet. But, of course, it’s distressing,’ de Blasio said.

Abramovich has been credited with helping bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to power.

Trump tweets are the exact internal monologue of every FOX viewer. He is a cultist exactly the same as the rest, which is why they love him and see sense in his random word salad. What he tweets is the same unthinking gut reaction that they are trying to instil in every viewer.

Except for (other people’s) weddings and funerals, the last time I attended a service was one Christmas while I was in college. The vicar spouted such egregious bullshit that I couldn’t take it, and walked home. I expected fury when the rest of the family came back, but all that happened was that my mother asked if I was ill, I said No, and she said “Thought not.” My dad never said a word about it. re: #8 Blind Frog Belly White

Regardless everything that has happened in politics in the last month - democrat supporters are still talking about Franken. You have been so conned by the RW media - suddenly this is more important than taking away health care, raising taxes on the poor, wiping out national parks, colluding with Russia, lying to congress etc etc

But democrats continue to be their own worst enemies.

I’m not going to say much because this whole issue has everyone on edge.

Point one. If Leeann were a Democrat and has appeared on several MSNBC shows, worked as a liberal news radio person and made the very same allegations with the very same questions surrounding the whole thing…how would she be treated by the conservative and wingnut media?

Point two. Does anyone remember the conversations we’ve been having about why Democrats wither in the face of the right’s constant attacks and why don’t the Democrats fight back?

I said the other day…we need to play hard too but we need to do it on the up and up and be factual.

So, how does this all fit together?

I speak from experience. Basically, no. Inertia is too great to even try to tuck your appendages in. Best outcome in that situation is you kick both shoes (skis come off) and ride it out and hope you don’t bonk your head on something. Surprisingly, crashes like that often don’t result in serious injury, unless you tomahawk off another cliff or into some trees.

I have. I made several comments the other day when it broke. And then I realized I better drop it.

Things I have seen since make me think that while obviously the picture and skit were crude and inappropriate that there might be embellishment involved. Well, as unpopular as it seems to be…this may be a political hit. Also, the GOP is working hard to get him out of office while covering for all their other crap like Trump and Moore.

The cases are not equal and the punishment probably won’t be either. The GOP would love to have Franken resign sooner than later and having the left assist that happening is icing on the cake.

That may look good politically and be bad politically. Sticky situation.

And that makes it controversial. And this is a politics discussion board.

There’s a bit of “perfect being the enemy of the good” here. We want to be the party that is better than Republicans. And we are; it really isn’t even a contest. But, there are humans in the Democratic party. We are flawed, and even the best of us screw up at times.

As for dealing with Franken, if we’re not going to time travel back to when he did that picture and stop him, then we have to accept that the event occurred, which is not the same as accepting that it’s OK. But, as with lots of events that have occurred, such as car wrecks, we still have other things to take care of, the big one being this tax cut that’s about to gut America.

He apologized, and she’s accepted. Right now, he’s the foremost expert on apologizing for these transgressions, which still makes him better than Trump and Moore, and that guy in Oklahoma who’s about to go to prison.

If it gets brought up outside of here, the conversation probably needs to go something like “It was sad what he did, and I’m disappointed. He’s a apologized, and hopefully it was the only thing he did. But I don’t really want to talk about Trump and Moore right now, because that tax cut for millionaires bill is going to make it very hard for my son to be in grad school, and will ruin America for years. How are we going to stop it?”

Beans are simmering on the stove. Bought a fake Christmas tree today. Had amazing ramen for lunch - proper ramen, not the shit that Americans think is ramen. Ran a nice 5k.

It is, for the moment, a decent Saturday.

Good for you. I am hanging in there. I did not have a good day yesterday, but hopefully I can turn things around before Thanksgiving. Going into the holiday break on a bad note would not be good for my mental health.

lol, what’s so funny about a senator being held to a much, much, much higher standard than the POTUS?!

Bacon, watercress, and tomato sandwich for dinner.

Extra mild Punisher spoilers:

People keep cooking and making food, and I’m getting distracted by it.

Frank Castle makes a Vietnamese hangover cure? You’re the sole survivor of a mercenary hit squad and your mom makes you your favorite Parsi soup?

Recipes. I fucking want recipes.

I’m still a fan of dumplings made out of cutting up biscuits, putting a bunch of stuff in a pot, and boiling it until it’s thick.

Rolled dumplings was one of the things my dad always made himself rather than allow mom to do it. I didn’t know what a drop dumpling was until I was married.

Silly isn’t funny. Someone should have told Jerry Lewis. And Al Franken.

The notion that he would or should resign before the investigation he demanded is silly.

Indeed…and there were some here who had a complete no tolerance attitude, demanding his immediate resignation.

If multiple women had been alleging Al Franken assaulted them when they were 14, I would have been calling for his resignation.

He can probably survive it (if he wants to), but he’s lost that nice New Politician smell.

Every Queensland electorate but three voted for equal marriage, most by wide margins. This might work out in the sticks where Labor’s already weak, but I doubt it’ll do much to them in Brisbane or The City of Townsville.

I think many still hold to that.

If you notice, this is not a popular topic as one would think.

I find the whole thing a great study of modern media driven politics and why there are winners and losers in that battle.

Self study.

Some Alabama pastors stand behind Roy Moore, cite “war on men”

“This attack on Judge Moore is an attempt by the Democrats to sway voters in Alabama,” said Pastor David Floyd of Marvyn Parkway Baptist Church, Opelika. “I don’t believe those women. In this country you are innocent until proven guilty.”

“More women are sexual predators than men,” said Raddish. “Women are chasing young boys up and down the road, but we don’t hear about that because it’s not PC.”

I honestly don’t remember the last time I heard about a woman accused of sexual assault.

I mean, I know it happens but I’d be willing to bet men are responsible for the majority of these crimes.

The problem there is that there is a massive ego problem in the reporting of female-on-male sexual assault. Most men don’t want to admit that a woman made unwanted advances. More still refuse to report it because “everybody knows that a woman can’t sexually assault a man”. The incidence rate of female-on-male sexual assault is probably vastly underreported. That being said, I do agree that men most likely commit the majority of sexual assault crimes.

Man (Woman?) bites dog. Been a couple teachers in the news over the years. But it seems to me that since this is most often a power play, and men are far and away the power players most often, we just don’t have the same imbalance to enable that way around. Just hazarding a guess here.

Came in late for discussion of Charles’ comment on the nuke commander who spoke of resisting an illegal launch order. That story, and what happens next, is the most important news of the day. All possible outcomes do damage to the country.

So I got home from Sydney and found a new doorknob cum lock on my door. No key… and management has no idea what happened.

A call to a locksmith later and I was home at last. No sign that anyone had broken in or anything like that.

How has your day been?

Might be a good time to light some candles, lock your phone in the car, and trip the house circuit breakers.

I dug out the camping lantern and dealt with the batteries that exploded in there a while ago.

Not sure if it’s going to work again, but I’ve attempted to clean it up. Letting it dry out now before I test with new batteries.

Franken messed up and apologized. Tweeden accepted his apology. The Senate is going to investigate him. I don’t see why anyone is going after Tweeden. She has the right to her feelings and I don’t see what going after her is going to do for our side.

Maybe, but if she sexually assaulted someone, maybe she deserves the opprobrium too.
