Hopefully, my investment in Doug Jones this fall will have a greater reward than the amounts spent on Ossoff and Quist earlier this year. I alternate between despair from the daily damage that Trump and the GOP are inflicting on this country to optimism engendered by the victories in Virginia and elsewhere 2 weeks ago. Rachel’s reminder tonight of the damage throughout the country due to GOP gerrymandering put a real damper on my mood.

Privilege is largely invisible to the privileged, and I speak as one of the privileged.

It’s exactly the same motivated reasoning that underpins white supremacy - only if the playing field is truly level are my accomplishments all my own doing. If you see yourself pulling ahead of others who aren’t white and male, it must be because you’re better at your job than they are.

Gerrymandering can be overcome with wave elections.

The point of gerrymandering is to create safe seats (see NE-2) by including just enough of another seat (NE-3) to overwhelm the majority vote in that area. (Thus, President Obama took an electoral vote in NE-2 in 2008, but gerrymandering by taking voters from my district ensured that didn’t happen in 2012.)

When there is a wave election (defined as actually getting off your ass and voting), the gerrymander is overcome. (See the elections in Virginia and other places recently.)

The solution to gerrymandering is not to despair; it is to make sure as many people as can vote, do vote.

While white people certainly have privilege in society, not all white people are in fact privileged. Trust me, I felt no privilege whist I was homeless for eleven years. Despite conservative claims that they support veterans, I was entirely invisible to society as a homeless disabled vet (including being disenfranchised from voting—my first vote after becoming homeless in 1996 was in 2012).

Your company’s Slack is probably sexist

Age, experience, and hierarchical position undoubtedly influence digital behavior. Does gender influence our office’s electronic communications? When I began asking my colleagues, nearly every woman said yes. Overwhelmingly, men said no.

Privilege is relative, not absolute. It doesn’t mean it was easy. It means it was easier than it would have been if you were not a white man. While I can’t speak to your specific circumstances, I daresay they’d have been more difficult to get out of if you weren’t white and male.

And if you don’t think you were at all privileged while homeless, consider how differently the better-off react to homeless white men, vs homeless black men.

A new generation. I asked my wife about her work experience when she worked at Digital Equipment Corporation. (We are assuming here that Slack is the current generation’s version of DECnet, which existed before the Internet.) She notes that sexism or sexist banter were not tolerated at DEC or on DECNet.

It’s beyond gerrymandering, the GOP is actively suppressing votes. Ossoff lost, but there is some real shady shit surrounding the vote and that all the data was wiped (after being told to retain it). I can’t speak to Quist, but even in VA there was shady shit about people given incorrect ballots - ballots that could have flipped control of the VA government from GOP to dem.

So we have:

- gerrymandering
- voter suppression (voter ID, robocalls to go to the wrong place or vote on incorrect days, etc., etc.)
- given incorrect ballots
- given provisional ballots
- electronic voting machines with no paper audit trail

Every single thing the GOP touches is tainted. Republicans are traitors to every single thing America stands for. They are trying to end America as we know it. And who knows if they will do so.

On a more serious note, in the wake of the Roy Moore scandal, someone on the Book of Face group for my high school has started a thread detailing the shenanigans of our physics teacher with several female students. One of the victims (one of my classmates) went into some detail about what he did to her. The school administration knew about all this, and swept it under the carpet for years (all through the 1970s). Finally, said physics teacher was forced to take early retirement, because the sitch only got worse.

As I just told another classmate, these revelations explain a lot of the peculiar teacher-female student interactions I saw in physics class in 10th grade.

During a speech in 1866, a possibly inebriated President Andrew Johnson apparently told a heckler to go fuck himself. The exact words are not recorded, just that there was a scandal over them and that the President’s words “lacked dignity and restraint” and that Johnson himself was “touched with insanity and stimulated with drink.”

This was about as close as we got to the daily barrage of presidential tweet sewage before the age of Trump.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Safe travels to all so inclined this week. Meanwhile, Trump’s busy railing against black folks protesting injustices and people who don’t pay fealty to Trump.

This is all Trump ever does. If you don’t express gratitude to the grossly insecure Trump, Trump lets everyone know via tweet just how he feels.

It’s so amazingly transparent, but Trump also knows this riles up his bigot brigade base, since the targets of his ire are minorities, women, and anyone who is grounded in facts and reality.

Remember when President Obama suggested a black man should not be arrested trying to get into his own home and mentioned race may have played a part - the outcry from the GOP in favor of the arresting officer was off the planet. “Problem”: Black players are kneeling during the Anthem rather than standing with hand on heart, showing “disrespect” to the flag and to our veterans.

NFL solution: Keep players off the field until after the DoD-mandated pageantry is over so as not to have images of kneeling players on TV.

Trump solution: Kneecap the entire league by benching players who won’t follow the orders of white owners and a white president to show “respect.”

My solution: Drop the flag and Anthem bullshit, tell the DoD where to shove their money, and tell any fans who complain where the exit is.

The companies he’s likely to quote had plans to move some portion of business to the US before Trump took office. He’s piggybacking on them.

Meanwhile, Carrier, which he touted as a success story for him, is offshoring jobs at the very factory he visited.

All Trump does is lie.

The problem isn’t as much what you said as that you obviously don’t know anything. How are you allowed to be involved in anything journalistic if you are so ignorant of basic facts surrounding the 2016 election? USA Today needs new staff if you’re a Bureau Chief.

The problem may be something else: When you write something, you can review your words and realize a mistake before you hit send. When speaking, you don’t have that luxury and you may be unaware that your words did not match your intention. I’ve certainly done that — said the exact opposite of what I was thinking but usually catch myself and correct my misstatement.

In a different context, I remember a conversation from over 35 years ago with a colleague who attended a client meeting with one of our top consultants. The consultant inadvertently said something that was erroneous and that she would have known was wrong, but my colleague was afraid to correct her before the clients; since the client had our written report, he decided that it was safer to overlook this error.

Did you know that in Alabama, if you owe any sort of court fines or legal fees (unpaid traffic tickets, fines, court fees, probation fees, drug testing fees, restitution, etc), you are disenfranchised until those fees are paid off in full?

Guess what population of Alabamans this disproportionately affects and what party they are most likely to vote for.

I believe this is true only if you were convicted of a felony and lost the right to vote. When you are released from probation, the restoration of that right to vote is contingent on repaying any court costs. I don’t think failure to repay causes you to lose an existing right.

That said — this is still heinous and should be prohibited. It is absolutely wrong that someone cannot vote only because they are too poor to vote. It is another form of poll tax and should be outlawed.

re: #23 wheat-dogg

On a more serious note, in the wake of the Roy Moore scandal, someone on the Book of Face group for my high school has started a thread detailing the shenanigans of our physics teacher with several female students. One of the victims (one of my classmates) went into some detail about what he did to her. The school administration knew about all this, and swept it under the carpet for years (all through the 1970s). Finally, said physics teacher was forced to take early retirement, because the sitch only got worse.

As I just told another classmate, these revelations explain a lot of the peculiar teacher-female student interactions I saw in physics class in 10th grade.

That’s not the only place where it happened. Mom’s church had a preacher caught doing it. Several teachers and coaches in my high school did “extracurricular activities” with both boys and girls. Saw several instances in college and lots of instances at work. We had a former manager who for years was involved with a bunch of coworkers. When it came to promotion time we knew why certain people got promoted. Then it went too far and I shall leave it for everyone to figure out the endgame…

they are threatened, so if you find a burrow, you are supposed to rope it off and not molest them. many homes, parks, etc have these small protected areas. there’s a park about a quarter mile from us that has a bunch of burrows. we dug a burrow on our property. no one every came that quarter mile to visit.

we found this owl last night when we got out of the car in a publix parking lot. it’s perched on a fence surrounding a construction area. they tend to not go far from the burrows, so i cant figure it.

An interesting bit of news today.

China’s Hainan Airlines successfully completed its first-ever, international flight using biofuel. The plane took off from Beijing and landed in Chicago ahead of schedule. The company hopes the fuel can be used on even more flights.

Hainan Airlines Flight 497 arrived at Chicago’s O’Hare airport to a water canon salute. It was the first-time a plane using biofuel had flown from China’s mainland to the United States. The base component of the fuel’s formula was waste, cooking oil.

The president of Hainan Airlines, Sun Jianfeng, had a birds-eye view for the event, given he captained the flight.

“Hainan Airlines wants to be the greenest airlines in the world which is why we use biofuel this time. Today’s flight is a special flight but I hope in the near future that this will be a normal flight. That is my hope,” he said.

They do get very touchy when you bring up Breivik, but suddenly wax poetics over Mladic.

Why the cognitive dissonance here?

We’ve always been more conflicted than we want to believe ourselves to be. We did turn away Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. Until the 1960’s, we pretty much banned immigration outside of Europe and racism was the reason why. But Trump has made it so much worse and here’s why. We had leaders in the WH that had learned from the mistakes of the past. We had a president whose father himself was one of those immigrants. Trump has set us back and it’s going to take awhile and the right leaders to recover from it. My fear is we will make some progress in recovering only to fall again when things aren’t ideal and the populace falls prey to another demagogue like Trump.

That’s unfortunate. My grandfather- Slovene-American, one of his best friends was Serbian-American. They had a good amount in common- Steelers fans, Democrats, Pennsylvania natives, had kids around the same age, etc. We can’t forget the past but we can’t hold on to it either. I’ve contended for some time that John Edwards was right to talk about two Americas but I think he was wrong about the economic implications. You got many Americans, I’d say our crowd here and in urban areas and many suburban areas that have embraced our changes as a country. They had no problem with a Kenyan-American as their President. They embraced Obergefell as the right decision. They are perhaps immigrants themselves, children or grandchildren of them, or at the very least have immigrants who are very special to them in their friends and or family. They embrace change. Then you have the others. Obama’s election scared the crap out of them. They honestly don’t like being told that change has happened and that’s who the Tea Party first got to and later Trump.

They have great food! But joking aside, it’s funny how it turned out because one of my good friends growing up was also Peruvian. My brother and I didn’t really understand the beautiful diversity of South America at that time so we were shocked that his father was light skinned. And then my brother married his wife, turns out that his FiL’s maternal grandparents have their roots in Croatia, not too far from our own mom’s paternal grandparents Slovenia. Lovely family and we of course all have my niece in common now too who always makes us smile.

Just like the best Democratic candidate ran against the worst imaginable Republican candidate for President last November and we saw how that went.

She was the best among the people running and I think she could have been a great president, although the Republicans would have obstructed every action she would have taken. But, given the misogyny, the damage done to her by the Clinton-haters over the years and the Comey interference, I wonder if Biden might have proved a more successful candidate.

People who live where there are no Muslims are the most Islamophobic. People who don’t realize they know any gay people are most afraid of marriage equality.

A world so small, you’ve gotta be careful about marrying a cousin. Actually, the marriage part is OK, just can’t have kids together. I know married cousins, sworn to childlessness.

Mostly, the people most afraid of change are the ones living where there hasn’t been much change. People who live where almost everyone is white are most afraid of immigrants and PoC’s. People who live where there are no Muslims are the most Islamophobic. People who don’t realize they know any gay people are most afraid of marriage equality.

Absolutely on all counts. I’ve known Muslims shit man my whole life. I’ve never felt threatened by Muslims. I’ve had them as friends, classmates, teammates, co-workers, etc. Same thing with me realizing I knew gay people. Meeting a gay cousin in my early teens definitely got me out of my early teenage homophobia that a lot of kids do display. And with immigrants, I always knew my mom’s parents were the children of them so I always empathized.

You know, I think Ziggy Tardis or whatever his name was had some crazy ideas but I don’t think he was necessarily wrong about the idea of having Muslims and others settle in red areas. Now, I disagreed with the motivation. He saw it as a means of turning red areas blue but I see it as people actually meeting people who are different. That way, your first thought with Muslim becomes less ISIS or terrorism but your neighbor or that guy who has that great restaurant or something like that.

They are convinced that all they have to do is get rid of all those pesky government environmental, health and safety regulations and the good-paying jobs will come roaring back — without the need for unions.

The alternative is accepting that the world where the White Man was King is gone, and not coming back, and changing their expectations. Plus, one of the traits that distinguish Trump voters from Clinton voters is geographic mobility - whether they’ve ever moved more than a few miles from their home town. Clinton voters are more likely to have moved across the state or the country for work. Trump voters believe that America owes them a well paid job with good benefits where they currently live - hence the fantasy of coal mines reopening.

I am not entirely sure this holds up. Demographically New England is pretty lilly white, but yet is very progressive, sanctuary cities popping up all over the place etc. Whereas places like Alabama and Georgia are a good bit more diverse racially and yet are very conservative.

When schools were being integrated through busing, I had the thought that the most effective way to integrate the schools would be to integrate the neighborhoods. I was a teenager, I thought it could happen in my lifetime. But even then I knew chances were thin.

Funny thing about my wingnut cousin - when I talk about immigrants or blacks, he say, “I live among these people”, but I looked up the demographics of the town where he lives. 98.97% white, which means in that town of 3000 people, there would be about 30 people IN THE WHOLE TOWN who aren’t white. It works out to 2 black people, and 8 Hispanic.

At least 2 Southern states had majority black populations in 1860, South Carolina and Mississippi, IIRC. Fear of slave revolt was very real.

I remember reading about at least one, years ago, where the slaves had revolted and killed a number of white people. I remember at the time thinking how awful that was. It seemed almost evil.

Now? It’s hard to see it any other way than that whites waged war on black constantly from the 17 Century on. It’s hard to see anyone white in that system as innocent. It’s hard to see the violence of the revolt as anything other than justified.

Blind Frog Belly White  Nov 22, 2017 • 11:15:32am

Took Zeena in for an ultrasound this morning, since she had suffered a relapse of the ‘Not-Hungrys’ last week. This week she’s been eating like she’s famished again, and gained back a pound or so. She seems happy and about as energetic as Greyhounds that age ever get.

The vet called with the news that some of her abdominal lymph nodes are enlarged a bit, maybe large enough to suggest lymphoma. Vet asked if they could do a needle biopsy and test, so I said yes.

I looked up canine lymphoma, of course. There’s a treatment course that works well, extending survival from a median of 1 month to a median of 12 months. The treatment course is about $7000. Zeena is now 12 1/4 years old. Greyhounds usually live 12-14 years.

With Rhyo, our Golden, it was simpler. He was fine on Thursday, sick on Friday, and diagnosed with metastatic hemangiosarcoma on Saturday. He was bleeding internally and it was inoperable and untreatable. There was really no decision to make.

Zeena? She’s had a good life. She loves it here. She’s about as old as Greyhounds get.

Mind you, this is still uncertain. The vet said the nodes were a bit enlarged, which was suggestive of maybe lymphoma. She didn’t say anything about any other masses, like spleen or liver, and her blood tests have all been normal. Maybe it’s NOT lymphoma, or maybe it’s early stage?

How far do you go to treat an old dog who’s had a good life and is reaching the end of her expected lifespan anyway?

Looking at those numbers out of the UK, damn……the lower rate of growth means that by 2021/2022, government tax receipts will be £20bn lower than their earlier forecast.

And that’s crucial - lately, there were a lot of headlines about “reducing the deficit!” and what have you…but the problem is they’ve cut government revenue more. The end result is that the Brits will end up more in debt than ever.

The only bright side, and I say this with a grim chuckle, is that inflation will soon start eroding the value of those debts. And of course, the value of everyone’s savings.

Looks like the UK is headed back to the bad old days of 1970’s stagflation. Who knows? Maybe ultimately even an IMF bailout if they can’t negotiate a successful exit deal with the EU.

Even if they negotiate an actual exit deal with the EU (which isn’t looking good, since Brexit negotiations are mostly externalized civil war within the Tories), they haven’t got the time or the skills to avoid a fucking disaster. They don’t have the civil service to rewrite all the regulations, get the necessary customs up and running, create an Irish border, create domestic regulatory agencies, and everything else in sixteen months with fuck-all extra money.

The only thing they could do to avoid total breakdown is to have some “transition” deal, which is going to drag things out for an unknown amount of time while business and immigrants get cold feet and leave for better prospects. Or they could chuck the whole misbegotten project, but that would mean that they admit they had made a terrible mistake, and by God we can’t have that.

re: #347 wrenchwench

I’m making pumpkin pies. Crust is in the fridge ( I made it Monday). Pies get baked tonight, because they’re always best the next day. One of them is staying home.

our contribution to the feast:

pastelitos (niece begged)
a bourbon soaked apple cake
lime roasted green beans

they’re going with two ducks instead of a turkey. sacrilege?
mashed parsnips
garlic roasted potatoes
necessary pumpkin pie and whipped cream
various and sundries

No, it’s not misnamed, You’re trying to pander to idiots who think all regulation is wrong, and will be shocked when their Internet no longer works as expected because the far-right gutted an essential regulation.
Asshole.

for a likely bad analogy

you add express lanes to an untolled highway
you can even have a higher speed limit if you want

you toll charge those people who choose to use it

you dont reduce the speed limit on every one else
NOR do you charge everyone else anything

That’s always tough. One pitfall is that if you start treatment, you’re likely to keep it going longer than you really should (ask me how I know).

Is palliative care an option?

Maybe…..it just strikes me as weird timing. Maybe something big is about to drop and he’s thinking there’s no way he can spin it? After all, as campaign comms director, he’d certainly be well-placed to know that.

As communications director, he is probably being asked to lie his face off, and maybe he just couldn’t do it anymore. But he can’t bring himself to comment. Hmmmm.

re: #300 Blind Frog Belly White

On old dogs: Yeah, it can be horrible. Personally, I would avoid new medical procedures and keep the dog as comfortable as possible until he or she becomes incontinent or immobile. This worked great with our old lab, who passed away in her sleep without making a sound. Not so well with another old fella who became so embarrassed at his state that I no longer felt bad about getting the vet out — he’d do a home visit (this was pretty deep in the country), and I could dig the grave and feel ceremonious about it. But it’s awful, and we’ll be looking at the issue again maybe as soon as next year (maybe later) and I am not looking forward to it. All the best to all of you.

here ya go - nothing brilliant:
we double this

1 lb green beans
3 tbsp or so, butter
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp garlic powder, - (this is a quickie recipe so feel free to chop up real garlic)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
2 tbsp lime juice

Heat to 375
veg spray a large glass baking dish
Melt butter and combine with olive oil and dry ingredients
Put green beans in a large bowl, pour in mixture and toss until evenly coated
Pour into baking dish
don’t wash the bowl
Cook for appx 35 minutes or until beans on top begin to lightly brown
you can broil a minute or two at the end
Pour back into bowl
Add lime juice, toss to coat
you can also add add grated lime peel, chopped toasted almonds (1/4 c for a lb of beans), more salt and pepper, etc

we do these a lot

xox
