If you’re going Black Friday shopping tomorrow, please do the world a favor and turn your phones horizontally when recording any fights. Thank you.

I need a couple 2X12s. Damned if I’d even go to Lowe’s tomorrow.

You could not pay me to go near a store tomorrow. I worked retail too many Black Fridays, I know how gross people are. Instead we’re driving 12 hours back home from Ft. Lauderdale. Not ideal, but better than shopping.

If you’re in the market for a new TV, here’s an incredible deal at Amazon on a 60-inch Sony 4K - 50% off! I’m seriously tempted to grab one.

Sony KD70X690E 70-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV (2017 Model): Electronics

But I think her idea of “abandoning” it would have been to renegotiate the sticky points. (I had a problem with some of the provisions for corporations.)

I would like to think so but she was for it and then against it. I supported HRC, but she did this and it gave her the aura of a waffler. This was an Obama initiative she should have stuck with and explained. I also blame Obama. I don’t think he did a stellar job selling it. If he had it would have made it easier for HRC to embrace and distance herself from Trump and Bernie.

Alas, no Dolby Video Support…..
I have the LG OLED 55” flat-screen - and I have yet to see anything that can beat it. Watching BBC’s Planet Earth II along with the most excellent Oppo UDP-203 UHD Blu-Ray player with HDR10 support is to die for. Samsumg’s QLED’s are a joke, and both Sony and Pansonic’s OLED”s are batshit insanely priced.

Even CNET is still sticking with the LG OLED…

She was for it, but Bernie pushed her left and she agreed to negotiate several minor points within the overall framework of the deal before final approval. This was all on her website in the run-up to Nov. 2017 and in no way stated that she was “against the TPP”, just the framework as presented.

Did Obama stay out of the election? Pretty much. It was Hillary’s job to run her own campaign. Did Hillary not make her intentions known? Yes, she did, but, you know, her e-mails. And Russia, And the billions that Drumpf received in free campaign advertising falsely pitched as “news”. Her message got drowned out in the static and the noise.

So, let’s not allow that to happen again shall we?

I have a 47-inch Sony that’s been awesome for years. I don’t trust some of those negative reviews - sometimes competitors try to stack the deck. But if there’s a problem Amazon has a no-charge return policy on items like this. I still might jump on it.

Samsungs and Sonys have the same basic video engine in their guts. I’ve got a 10-year old Bravia 40” and it has been a solid performer. We don’t have a room that needs anything bigger and it fits in my nice oak bookshelf set (6’, 7’, 6’ trio, each 42” wide).

Anymouse 🌹  Nov 23, 2017 • 7:23:32pm

From the last thread (I’ve been out today, sorry I didn’t respond sooner):

re: #78 The Major

I got me a new toy on Twitter….

[Twitter exchange about Trump supposedly doing great things for veterans]

Anymouse - comment ?

You might recall Trump’s promise during the campaign to give a large sum of money to veterans organisations. He had to be shamed into it by the press and public over a period of weeks.

As for the issues surrounding deaths that were reported in a handful of VA hospitals due to waiting lists, those have been resolved. One thing that you have when you’re dealing with the VA is the I Amendment right of redress of grievances with the government. You don’t have that with commercial or charity hospitals.

Trump has done literally nothing with the VA since he took office, other than appoint a VA Secretary (the previous secretary). Since that time, Sec’y Shulkin has abandoned the goal of eliminating veteran homelessness under the new administration.

Three GOP reps, Koch Bros. allies, have introduced a bill to turn the VA medical system into insurance vouchers. Every last veterans service organisation is opposed to the bill.

Civilian hospitals ofttimes do not have the specialised skills required to deal with the sorts of injuries or illnesses associated with military service. On top of that, voucher programmes can be underfunded when a different priority comes up for Congress (which would be far worse than a waiting list).

In addition, virtually every veteran who uses the VA would be classified as having a “preëxisting medical condition.” A voucher programme coupled with repealing the ACA would mean many (perhaps all) veterans would be barred from getting affordable healthcare on the civilian marketplace.

In 2014, when the waiting list scandal first arose, a bill was put forward (the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act, or CHOICE Act, HR 3230 in the House and S 2424 in the Senate) to allow veterans to seek civilian care when certain wait targets could not be met by a VA facility or if the veteran lived further than a certain distance.

That bill as passed also included language to improve hiring at the VA (shortages of personnel being the cause of waits). However, it did not improve hiring (the House didn’t provide the extra funding for that).

It also had a sunset provision. Since the targets were not met, the House and Senate passed a bill, signed by Trump, that extends the sunset date. That is literally all Trump has done with vets.

I had never heard of cooking the stuffing inside the turkey until a couple of years ago. We had always cooked the bird by itself, with tons of butter jammed under the skin, and upside-down until the last hour or so.

Cooking the stuffing inside may be a pre-1970s thing, because that’s how my mom always cooked the turkey, with the stuffing inside. Then, there were warnings about food poisoning if the temperature inside the bird was not high enough to make the stuffing safe to eat. So, the cooking experts encouraged preparing the stuffing separately, with the added benefit of not overcooking the bird.

Where did the name for stuffing come from if it wasn’t stuffed inside the bird?

But you are right, that was the old method before they learned about even temperatures for cooking and other safer cooking methods.

My mother was old school Ohio German farm girl. Stuffing inside, but it was well cooked. Also a bunch of it around the turkey in the baking pan. I like that the best because it had a crisp top. Sausage in the stuffing too.

I suspect roasting with stuffing inside was just fine before the days of frozen solid turkeys and 30-pounders.

Turkeys have apparently doubled in size over the last 20 years or so. A 16 pound bird used to be a big one!

Last time I was up in Colorado delivering some desperately needed Computer and Camera gear I donated to my friend’s Wolf Sanctuary , I alas wasn’t able to partake - some of that I was actually researching for my Meniere’s Disease.

Currently, W.O.L.F is in for the fight of it’s life as its very existence is being threatened by some people whose background is rather “colorful”….I believe the Denver FOX affiliate did a story on them - basically, the sanctuary is kinda “puttin’ the hurt” on their enjoyment (hunting just about anything and everything) - and they have resorted to GOP-level smear tactics to put these folks out of their passion. None of what these jokers says is true - I’ve been there, and I’ve seen them. Hell, the Federal Government Agencies that regulate these sanctuaries have been there and didn’t find anything of what the smear-merchants are accusing the sanctuary of doing…..

I know you and I have had our differences-but any help you can give these folks wold be greatly appreciated.

Y’all are reminding me that being an orphan has lovely advantages. Most family holidays were so good - those I remember with such bittersweet fondness. Now, though… the current state of our country and politics… I think none can escape it creeping at least, more likely furiously blowing into our homes and relationships. The destruction is pervasive and heartbreaking. It’s unforgivable.

Had a very pleasant day with friends and neighbors. Fellow orphans. Good food (the Instant Pot turkey breasts were PERFECT), much wine, crackling firepit keeping us warm on a chilly day. At one point I noticed that our gathering reflected well the diverse city in which we live with white, black, Mexican, Puerto Rican/Cuban, Viet Namese, cis and gay. Considering it was only 9 people I find that pretty impressive.

Everybody’s talking about the progress you’ve made in the last few months since I opened it up. We opened it up, we said go ahead, we’re going to fight to win. We’re not fighting anymore to just walk around, we’re fighting to win. And you people, you’ve really turned it around in the past three to four months like nobody’s seen and they are talking about it. So thank you very much, brave, incredible fighters. We’re being talked about as an armed forces. We’re really winning. We know how to win. But we have to let you win. They weren’t letting you win before. They were letting you play even. We’re letting you win. The fight against ISIS, it’s coming our way. Coming our way. Big, big difference. A lot of things have happened. They say we’ve made more progress against ISIS than they did in years of the previous administration. That’s because I’m letting you do your job. We’re very, very proud of you. Believe me everybody in this country is watching and they’re seeing and they’re seeing positive reports for a change instead of the neutral and negative reports. It’s all positive.

Dinner has been consumed. There was turkey with two kinds of stuffing, waldorf salad and ambrosia, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce, sweet rolls and homemade punkie pie. All of this for four people, on the principle that I cooked all day today and I don’t hafta for the rest of the weekend.

My happy little old mum plans to live on stuffing and gravy for at least three days, with waldorf salad for dessert. Yes, we put the stuffing in the bird because that’s the way her mother did it, and my grandmother trained me well.

The remnants of the groaning board have been shoe-horned into the shrieking fridge, and the ancestral china lurks on the table, waiting to be hand-washed. Sufficient unto tomorrow the ceremonial dismembering of the turkey carcass, and the boiling of the bones for stock.

It’s not Amazon killing off malls and shopping centers but private equity firms:

This is a robbery in progress. Private equity firms borrow massively to buy companies, and use corporate cash reserves to pay themselves back. Workers who supply the value to the business see nothing; in fact, to service the debt, companies usually cut staff. When the retailer collapses under the borrowing weight, all workers lose their jobs. And even when sales go up, like they have by 5 percent annually in the toy sector over the past five years, dominant toy sellers like Toys”R”Us cannot compete because of the debt burden. The company’s profitability was increasing when it filed for bankruptcy.

Trump nirvana. He’s a psycho.

He’s a deluded old man, making up scenarios in his head where there is no failure, only rousing success. And every success is due solely to him. Everyone else is just a bunch of props who owe their every success to him.

It’s twisted, is what it is.

Much worse than Reagan was. Trump seems to hold onto certain notions — we are at war and the military was being held back — and just talk around those points. Never mind that the notions bear no relation to reality.

His brain is addled.

I’m at friends north county ugh the heat, cooking etc.

Viewing the hills all day totally expecting something to burn. Nada. It cooled down nice.

But plus. I saw Orion rise over the hills. First time. I was what are those 3 stars in a row??

If you can find at least an 8 inch telescope, you can see the Orion nebula if you look about halfway between the belt and the lower two stars on his right side.

My avatar is the result of one I generated using Python’s implementation of Turtle. The hard part is that a decimal on a computer only has so much accuracy. Zooming in just using those values would start to introduce a whole lot of difference between computed and real values. That’s what I’m curious about.

I was goofing around for my avatar. I mean, why wouldn’t someone think “Hey, Python has an implementation of Turtle, so let’s draw fractals”? They Python-Turtle version takes over an hour to compete one image, though it’s fun watching it spiral. (Python, if you don’t know, is a language in between simple scripting languages and higher speed languages like Java or C++).

Yes, it’s a different program. I’ve also got one with my graphics card because I’m studying parallel programming. I’m just curious about overcoming numeric limitations.

Here’s an approximate version your Julia set using my program:

My wife would argue with that if she was on Twitter. She dropped out of high school at age sixteen, to obtain three bachelor’s degrees: Two in computer fields and one in business administration. She then went to work as a software quality assurance engineer. (About that time I was floating around the Med fixing aircraft electronics.)

When the issue of our unequal education paths comes up in a conversation (rarely), I just joke that any time I need a college degree I can borrow one of hers.

Guido also has committees that help him make decisions; he has final say if something can be done in different ways. Also, they have a contingency plan if something were to happen to him.

He’s why the tertiary operator is written in Python as:

This is an interesting study: A group of psychologists show in a study they can change conservative voters into liberals.

washingtonpost.com

Mind Control!!!one!!!1!2!uno!!!

Conservatives, it turns out, react more strongly to physical threat than liberals do. In fact, their greater concern with physical safety seems to be determined early in life: In one University of California study, the more fear a 4-year-old showed in a laboratory situation, the more conservative his or her political attitudes were found to be 20 years later. Brain imaging studies have even shown that the fear center of the brain, the amygdala, is actually larger in conservatives than in liberals. And many other laboratory studies have found that when adult liberals experienced physical threat, their political and social attitudes became more conservative (temporarily, of course). But no one had ever turned conservatives into liberals.

thestar.com.my (Goes to The Star, a Malaysian outlet, more at the link)

KUALA LUMPUR: Atheism should not be allowed in Malaysia for any citizen as it contradicts both the Federal Constitution and the Rukunegara, said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (pix).

He said atheist ideologies were dangerous as they were being propagated to not only Muslims but to the non-Muslims in Malaysia.

“Atheism contradicts the first principle of the Rukunegara, which is a belief in God.

“We need to understand, that in the Malaysian context, our Federal Constitution states that freedom of religion is not freedom from religion.

“It is unconstitutional to say we can spread ideologies that incite people to leave a religion or profess no religion at all,” he said in reply to a question by Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud (Amanah - Kota Raja) in Parliament on Thursday (Nov 23).

Another reads: “Why is it that many of the sale items in the black Friday ad that are supposed to be available all day today are not online?!?! This is ridiculous and the worst crap walmart has pulled yet!”

South China Morning Post has an interesting story about the North Korean soldier who managed to cross the DMZ and enter South Korea, after being shot by his former comrades.

Medical teams have worked for days to remove the shards of at least four bullets from Oh’s body, stitch up his shredded organs, and treat pre-existing conditions including tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and a case of massive intestinal worms, Lee said.

“He’s quite a strong man,” said Lee.

Since Oh’s defection, North Korea appeared to have replaced all its security guards on the border, an intelligence source in the South told the Yonhap news agency on Thursday.

Lee said that when the defector arrived in an American military helicopter at the hospital - which is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and is used to treat important visitors such as visiting US presidents - he came with zero personal information.

The part I bolded gives you an idea of how bad things are in North Korea. It’s a wonder the guy made it to the border in his condition.

Also, those border guards have been “replaced” probably means “will never see the light of day again.”

There’s a few sites specific to reviews outside of Amazon where they review the TV’s for picture quality, motion and refresh issues and the like. I think the one I was using was rtings.com (I googled by model number.)

I suspect roasting with stuffing inside was just fine before the days of frozen solid turkeys and 30-pounders.

I think the issue is people slow cooking a turkey for longer periods at much lower temperatures. That doesn’t allow the bird or its stuffing to cook at a high enough temperature to kill bacteria.

I always stuff the bird. The stuffing is far better when the juices flowing through and the stuffing adds flavor to the bird. I also put a pound of butter in the stuffing mix.

You would need to buy a miniature robot KC-130 to keep the wet-vac wet.

Yeah, and not much good if you have pets. You just end up with deposits of wet cat hair in random spots.

My cats are capable of doing that themselves through horking up hairballs. Don’t need a mechanized version adding to it. But for dry vacuuming it works pretty well, especially under the furniture.

Personally, I’m looking for LG. Samsung picture quality is iffy and based model. Google reviews. Sony send to have a lot of problems with both software and internal cracking (seriously, internal cracking??)!

I’m looking for a 65” today, but can’t see anything great yet. Maybe on Cyber Monday.

I did pick up an iPad 4 for $189 at Groupon.

We had 3 Samsungs that all needed boards replaced because of a run of bad capacitors. We have a 65” LG now that we really like.

What I did. Sous Vide the turkey in parts. Made turkey stock with the carcass and neck/giblets, onion/carrot/celery/herbs in a low oven overnight. Strained it. When it came time to bake the stuffing, I drizzled some of the stock over it and baked. You get lots of the turkey flavor that way too! :)))

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. I have seen Black Friday and it has been okay so far. Already did the mall thing here in northern NJ, and the roads weren’t too bad and the stores were busy but not insane as they seem to be elsewhere. Maybe it’s because Paramus NJ has blue laws and doesn’t allow stores to open obnoxiously early, or stay open insanely late.

But that’s neither here nor there. Trump is spending his time golfing once again all while Puerto Rico barely has 50% of power restored more than 2 months after Hurricane Maria hit. This is the worst blackout in the nation’s history and Trump simply doesn’t care how long it take. He isn’t visiting to make sure restoration goes any faster.

He still takes credit for work that isn’t his, and he’s claiming he’s doing stuff that no one can actually verify (like “bringing businesses back”).

The thing is, thanks to the GOP, Trump’s been extremely effective at packing the courts with incompetents, extremists, and unqualified know-nothings who will further the GOP agenda long after Trump is consigned to the ash heap of history.

I would agree with that. He’s committed multiple crimes so getting off with a much reduced punishment would be in his best interest.

Billy Baldwin slams Trump for hitting on his wife 20 years ago:

Actor Billy Baldwin publicly slammed President Donald Trump for being a master of sexual impropriety during an online argument with Trump’s eldest son, Donald Jr., on Thursday.

Baldwin told Trump Jr. - and everyone else on Twitter - that over 20 years ago, the future President of the United States gate-crashed a private party and hit on Baldwin’s wife-to-be, Chynna Phillips, attempting to entice her onto a helicopter ride to his casino.

“Your Dad is a 5th degree black belt when it comes to sexual impropriety allegations. In fact… I once had a party at the Plaza Hotel… your father showed up uninvited & hit on my wife… invited her on his helicopter to Atlantic City. She showed his fat ass the door,” Baldwin tweeted at Trump Jr.

Another potential impact of ditching Net Neutrality - If the web loses net neutrality, independent musicians will lose their careers.

“I’m real dumb. Like GOP congressperson level stupid. Could you explain why the digital protection racket you describe is bad for musicians?” Holy fuck. Fine. So imagine for a second a musician sells their own digital music — on their website, on Bandcamp, wherever. iTunes is riding in that fast lane. Spotify? Probably. But Bandcamp? The musician’s website? They’re more like a rusty BMX pulling a three-wheeled Radio Flyer wagon over a cracked sidewalk.

When someone buys digital music from an artist directly they’ll see long, slow downloads that hopefully manage to finish. When they stream music from that same musician’s site it’ll hang and pause unless it’s compressed to hell. But when that same person buys from iTunes? Smooth like butter.

Some fans will put up with the frustrating experience of buying direct from an artist because they know it’s better for them, but that’s not everyone. Expect direct-to-fan artist businesses to migrate to iTunes and Google. Without Title II net neutrality the web is just a battle of media titans with musicians caught in the crossfire. Artists who don’t sign everything over to big labels or plan to sell only through the biggest outlets will be hurt. The independent music world will be fundamentally changed. We’ve moved to a digital world. That isn’t going to change. Killing Title II net neutrality makes it even harder for independent musicians to survive in a digital landscape.

This is some interview: Bruce Bartlett: The Republican Party Needs to Die

If you were to pick a moment when the media landscape changed in a way that helped to birth Donald Trump’s presidency, what would it be?

I think there are several inflection points. I would go back to 1969 as the beginning, because that was the year that Spiro Agnew gave his famous speech attacking the media. It set the tone for everything conservatives have thought about the media ever since, which is that it is “elitist,” opposed to their values, and hopelessly liberal. It was nonsense then and it’s certainly nonsense now.

As a consequence, conservatives I think have long drifted away from the mainstream media and sought out alternative media. Even before talk radio, it was very common that conservatives would get much of their news from newsletters and small magazines like Human Events. The fact that conservatives had an alternative media network actually put them in a good position once the mainstream media began to decline.

I think liberals, by contrast, have always been very happy with the mainstream media. I think Democrats really depended on the New York Times to come up with good ideas for policies and hearings and so on. Then came the ending of the Fairness Doctrine, which immediately gave rise to Rush Limbaugh and others of his ilk. I think the next inflection point was of course the Republican takeover of Congress [in 1994] and then the creation of Fox News very shortly thereafter.

We need more of this.

The crust is store-bought (most likely frozen)…you can see that it’s still in a disposable foil pan.

jeebus…if one is going to go to the trouble of making an actual pecan pie, then one should take the time to make a real crust.
