In 2017, UK water companies still rely on “magic”

If you had to work out where to dig so that you didn’t cut off the water supply to an entire town, would you rely on a Ouija board for your answer? Probably not, but that is in effect what at least two UK water companies (now ten out of the twelve UK companies, see update below) openly admit to doing in 2017. Except instead of asking a Ouija board, they are asking divining (or dowsing) rods.

My parents were trying to install a new water pipe from the mains, which required knowing where the existing mains water pipes were underground. After calling out a technician from Severn Trent, the water company that services the whole of the Midlands, my parents couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the man from Severn Trent slowly walking around holding two “bent tent pegs” to locate the pipe.

I used to mark underground conduits. We used a transmitter to inject a RF signal onto a specific metal pipe/cable and used a receiver wand to follow the signal. The wand would tell you if the conduit was left, right, or directly under. Science, it works.

Town maps notoriously suck. We were putting in a series of recovery and injection wells in Houston at the Sol Lynn Superfund site south of I-610, just east of Fannin Street in the early 90’s. We had the Houston utilities maps and had cleared all the placement points with the City and hit an 8” main on the opposite side of the road from where it was mapped. Chaos ensued.

Popping an 8” water main results in the creation of a very large crater and a sprightly new river. We barely got the rig out of the way before the back wheels sank. The City of Houston Water and Wastewater people were pissed. We showed them our maps, they checked theirs, and admitted that theirs were wrong.

I had an old hand show me the value of dowsing rods for finding shallow buried metal lines some years before. While we were waiting for the W&W people to show up, I pulled them out of my car and walked the street and found where the line crossed from north to south, and then where it jogged back north again. I painted the turn points on the pavement and told the W&W people where the jog was. They brought out metal detectors and confirmed what my coat hanger had told me.

I don’t know if dowsing can tell you where water is, but it definitely works with shallow metal lines. Two years later we had an ER in Burnett and we knew where the gasoline, as a result of 16” of rain, had risen with the shallow groundwater and was entering an old sanitary sewer that was fired clay, bell and butt pipe (i.e., not sealed). Waiting for equipment, I walked the street with my rods and found what seemed to be an old steel line crossing the road where we would have to excavate to get at the sewer line. The line led to an old building foundation. The building had been scraped. I told the City crew that there might be an old gas or water line there and that they might want to get One Call out to clear the excavation area. They were worried that the gasoline was almost to the sewer treatment plant and wanted to get after it. Sure enough, we popped a blinded 1” natural gas line 18” below the street and had to stop and evacuate the area for 1 1/2 hours until they could shut off the gas to the immediate area.

That’s good. I was thinking of mentioning it. With PVC and ceramic pipes a trace-wire is important to have next to the pipe. I don’t think anybody really did that until after the year 2000.

Well, there is a difference between a giant city and my tiny village. Our town maps for our water system were created when we laid an entire new water system and installed the RO units in every building.

The maps of course are not accurate to the nearest inch, but they are accurate enough that we know where every pipe is within a few inches. The metal detector does the rest.

We just got a grant to replace all our water meters, which we will do in Spring. The company installing our new water meters went through town in less than a day finding all the water mains.

Yes, we have both an arsenic and uranium problem in our water. As such, the state Health Department and the Environmental Protection Agency demanded the village do something about it.

Since a water treatment plant would be incredibly expensive for a village our size, the EPA and state allowed the village to install RO units in each building. (The emergency solution until they were installed was the village giving Britta water pitchers and filters to everyone.)

We are required to test every home and business in the village over a three-year period for arsenic and uranium (we also test for other things since we’re doing it anyway). The village has a contract with the RO unit provider to service every RO unit in town every six months. (That is way cheaper than a water treatment plant.)

Since 2011, Gov. Scott Walker and Republicans in Madison have eased environmental regulations for business projects and cut funding to some large natural resources programs. Here is a look at some of the areas where their changes are being felt:

Foxconn. State exempted the company from some waterway and wetlands requirements as part of a $3 billion incentive package signed into law Sept. 17. The Taiwan-based electronics-maker also would not have to submit to an environmental impact analysis.

Iron mining. A 2013 law relaxes protections for iron mining. It was passed after heavy lobbying and political contributions from Gogebic Taconite, a mining company.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump’s back out on the links again today (count on it), just as he spent yesterday golfing too. I remember the days when Trump promised he wouldn’t have time to golf because he would be too busy being president to have time for anything else.

That was the mother of all lies, of course.

Of course Trump did have time to tweet about a major terror attack in Sinai, Egypt, and Trump demands yet another Muslim ban and to build a wall.

Neither of which makes any sense when you consider:
1) the prior Muslim bans excluded Egypt (and Saudi Arabia) from the ban, so not a single Islamic terrorist who carried out the attack against the mosque killing more than 230300 people would have been stopped.

2) Sinai already has a wall - separating it from Israel, and it hasn’t stopped terror attacks in Egypt (or Israel).

3) Trump continues gutting the State Department, and this undermines our ability to respond to these attacks or take proactive steps to coordinate activities. When you don’t have personnel to coordinate, that means you don’t actually coordinate and it’s showing.

The vacuum of power and leadership thanks to Tillerson and Trump gutting the State Department inures a benefit to no one in the US. It benefits our rivals like Russia and China, who are rushing to fill the void.

This helps no one in the US and undermines our long term security and threatens our prosperity. When our allies see that we aren’t reliable, they work to make deals elsewhere, which means other countries will not invest in the US - reducing our economic output and this again undermines our economy.

Trump remains what he’s always been -a reactionary know nothing who preaches to a bigot brigade base that is just as ignorant and bigoted as he is.

I think NBC has a lot to answer for. I am sure they have tapes (like the Access Hollywood tape) that might have been revealed more of the dark side of Trump and been sufficient to derail his candidacy. After all, with more tapes, the press may have focused on that instead of the Wikileaks (aka Russian) release of Democratic emails. And only 80,000 people needed to vote differently to make a difference. His hard core supporters are racists and couldn’t care but there are other people who could be reached.

This guy was born in Bisbee where nobody rides a bike because of the hills, then he went to college in Flagstaff where he bought himself a Schwinn Varsity to get around on (no car) and have fun on. He would ride up to the ski area every weekend, partly on dirt roads, for the fun of riding down. One day there were a bunch of guys on ‘their little bikes, with their little matching outfits’ going up the hill he was coming down on, so he turned around to follow them to see what they were doing. He followed for a while, then decided they were going too slow, so he passed them and waited at the next dirt road and went down past them to get back to campus. The next day, the coach for the 1968 Olympic team found him and offered him a position on the team, but they guy with the Varsity had finals coming up so he turned him down.

They could not care less about fair elections and would be absolutely thrilled to see America return to its segregated past, if not straight out slavery.

Ha! Funny thing, is, though, that collecting and working on vintage mechanical watches gives you a somewhat different view of time and timekeeping. Can’t run a railroad like that, so the railroads gave us Standard Time, which some 19th Century skeptics said violated the Laws of God!!!

Watches themselves - railroaders needed the most accurate ones, because timetables to allow several trains to run on the same track, sometimes in opposite directions, at the same time, required those running the trains to follow their train orders to the minute. But a watch is not primarily a device which tells time. Its primarily a device which releases the power of a wound-up spring at as close to a fixed rate as possible, allowing you to put hands on it and use it to tell the time. So railroad watches ran with 30 seconds variation a week, meaning two guys on the same train could have over a minute’s difference in the time. These watches were generally not set to the second - no hacking system.

Viewed this way, you realize that knowing the exact time is not that important. I do try to make sure all my watches run as close to accurate as possible, but adjustment for position is beyond my abilities.

Trump’s looking to gut the agency created to prevent another 2007-2009 financial meltdown, and wants to put a guy who thinks the agency shouldn’t exist in charge to make that happen. So of course, creeps and cronies are cheering on this crap. Like Jacob Wohl, who always seems to find a way to tout Trump’s financial moves - even though Trump hasn’t actually affected the markets and whose own financial background is shady to say the least.

In fact, Wohl’s lucky he didn’t see jail time. He’s a con artist who totally fits the Trump mold, and has been investigated by the SEC and NFA (who banned him for life).

Mcusta bill fold. Never leave home without it unless I’m flying. It’s a bit heavy, but I’ve always used billfolds, and always used the kind with a small blade. Serious sharp. Locking. Tough. Had to dull the edges in the fold though, edgy.
