Video: Why the Right Is So Dishonest About American History

Humor • Views: 33,686

Happy almost-Thanksgiving. What could be better than football and turkey? Well, there’s genocide and stuff, but we don’t want to ruin your holidays. Nope, we’ll leave that to the disingenuous folks who would like to pretend that there is absolutely nothing wrong with any American History not at all never. Enjoy your pie!

Not even sure the people of Hispaniola even had corn to grow. Chris sure didn’t.

They did, though it was less important than on the mainland. Taino people, food and agriculture.

Contrary to mainland practices, corn was not ground into flour and baked into bread, but was cooked and eaten off the cob. Corn bread becomes moldy faster than cassava bread in the high humidity of the Caribbean. Corn was also used to make an alcoholic beverage known as chicha.

I knew the climate was not suitable in some way. It was storage, not cultivation that was the problem. Thanks!

If white people knew the first goddamned thing about corn then pellagra wouldn’t have become such a scourge in the Southern United States through the first half of the last century. If they’d used the nixtamalization process invented by South American natives for more than just hominy grits then an entire public health epidemic could’ve been averted. An estimated three million Americans suffered and one hundred thousand died due to that ignorance.

Had a relative on my maternal grandfathers side of the family die of pellagra out at Post, Texas. Had to look it up to find out what it was.

Welp. LGF is blocked on the hotel wifi (even though I was able to connect for the last 3 days) and they told me “It’s the middle of the night in the US, their server is probably down!” but now I’m using my daughter’s wifi.

We had a MAGNIFICENT Bar Mitzvah celebration last night, and that’s not even including the beautiful celebrations we had in New York, and on Friday night at the Western Wall and on Sabbath morning.

Yeah but will they change and stop writing such vacuous nonsense? That’s the real question. This is not the first puff piece they’ve done on dangerous people. Someone put up a tweet contrasting the way the NYT demonized Michael Brown after he was shot by a cop versus the way they wrote about an actual Neo Nazi. It’s disheartening.

Here are some more details on that explosion near Ningbo, China. The cause is still unknown, but they have ruled out a gas pipeline explosion.

scmp.com

The blast that leveled a section of Tianjin in 2015 happened because chemicals were being stored improperly, and some of the chemicals were oxidizers. When the firefighters battled the blaze with water, they made the situation worse. I’m wondering if this also happened in this village near Ningbo.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump woke up this morning to reassert his support for the child molester Roy Moore.

Meanwhile, Yair Rosenberg complains about calling the GOP Nazis. I disagree.

Everything the GOP has done in the past several years, and going back 20-30 years or more has been to deprive rights to women and minorities, and now the white supremacists and Nazis have one of their own in the WH furthering their policies ever more explicitly.

The GOP owns the whole mess - all of it, and they’ve enabled actual Nazis in the process (Gorka, etc.) while excusing and enabling Trump who equates Nazis and KKK with the people fighting Nazis and KKK.

The parallels between what’s going on now with the GOP and their enabling white supremacists and Nazis and how the Nazis came to power in Germany are striking in similarity.

BigPapa  Nov 26, 2017 • 6:38:01am

I like Yair and respect his comment about trivializing Nazis, which is what the right does attacking liberals.

He’s wrong about being concerned with corrosion of political persuasion: Trump voters are vapor locked and not likely to be persuaded.

Nazis first foothold of power they got barely above 30% in the Reichstag. It took 2 more years of politics and wrangling before they had full control. Trump is deconstructing our administration and attacking the 4th Estate relentlessly. Politics of xenophobia are coming back.

We’ve been here before.

re: #30 wheat-dogg

At least, for as slow as your DSL connection is, your Upload and Download speeds are damn near the same, making your DSL connection symmetric - which is nearly impossible here either with Cable of DSL stateside unless you have Verizon FIOS or decide to install an 0C3 link - and that ain’t cheap….

When I was living back in the Twinc Cities, the ILEC CenturyLink kept sending out folks to get them to switch over from Comcast to them. All I had to do is ask them: “Are you Fiber to the Home or Fiber to the gateway ?” Once they said “No”, I said “Come back to me when you have Fiber to The Home - and don’t bother sending over any more door-to-door reps asking me to switch.”

Also, they were bundling DIRECTV in their package as well. Well, since I had a Ceton 4-channel CableCard tuner in my Home Theater PC, that also made my decision much easier as well..

jaunte  Nov 26, 2017 • 6:45:35am

She’s bemoaning the politicization of evangelicals, but not advocating strenuously against electing a pedophile.

“…The upside to this train wreck? It’s a short term. One seat going to a freshman senator who’ll have little influence in those first three years, either way. Three years, and then a do-over.

Here’s where we are: the GOP has come to understand that Evangelicals are trained seals. We show up and clap for any clown you can slap a Republican jersey on. It doesn’t even have to be a godly or wise person. Our votes are a sure thing, and we’ll turn out and vote for problematic or corrupt GOP candidates far more consistently than non-religious conservatives. So come to terms with the fact that the church isn’t influencing diddly squat, not even in our favorite party. To the contrary, the church is the one being influenced — and our credibility before a lost and dying world destroyed — because we have believed the great lie about political engagement.

But somewhere along the way we’ve gotten confused on the hierarchy of things. We had good intentions when in the 80s we founded the Moral Majority to harness the power of Christian voters and increase impact on government, in the hope of shaping our culture. But two distinct problems have emerged: political investment has yielded almost no discernible positive impact on our culture (look at the stats—we’re actually going backward), and the focus on the effort has distracted us from our real calling, which is to deliver the gospel message to the lost so that they might be saved.

Sorry to tell you, but not only have The United States not gone backwards, but that Jesus Christ himself would be leading the charge if the came back looking like Charles Bronson…

Hannah Arendt on the “banality of evil” embodied by Eichmann:

“…What he said was always the same, expressed in the same words. The longer one listened to him, the more obvious it became that his inability to speak was closely connected with an inability to think, namely, to think from the standpoint of somebody else. No communication was possible with him, not because he lied but because he was surrounded by the most reliable of all safeguards against the words and the presence of others, and hence against reality as such.”

Yep, filled with mysticism, like the Thule Society.

And it still hasn’t gone away; there’s the Tempelhofgeschellschaft and its more recent iterations.

The younger Tempelhofgesellschaft was founded in Vienna in the early 1990s by Norbert Jurgen-Ratthofer and Ralft Ettl to teach a dualist form of Christian religion called Marcionism and a form of gnosticism. This one was a part of the main THG/Homburg. The group identifies an “evil creator of this world,” the Demiurge with Jehovah, the God of Judaism, and holds that Jesus Christ was an Aryan, not Jewish. They distribute pamphlets claiming that the Aryan race originally came to Atlantis from the star Aldebaran (this information is supposedly based on “ancient Sumerian manuscripts”). They maintain that the Aryans from Aldebaran derive their power from the vril energy of the Black Sun. They teach that since the Aryan race is of extraterrestrial origin it has a divine mission to dominate all the other races. It is believed by adherents of this religion that an enormous space fleet is on its way to Earth from Aldebaran which, when it arrives, will join forces with the Nazi Flying Saucers from Antarctica to establish the Western Imperium. Its major publication is called Das Vril-Projekt (1992).

After the THG had been dissolved, Ralf Ettl founded the Freundeskreis (circle of friends) Causa Nostra. It remains active and maintains relations to far-right publishers like the Swiss Unitall-Verlag.

Pelosi and Democratic leadership considered that they needed to tread lightly about a ranking member and key member of the CBC. It was a mistake to do so - the right thing is right even if it means taking hits.

Sex abuse/harassment is wrong, no matter who does it.

The GOP continues backing Trump, who admits to being a sex predator on the Access Hollywood tape (but now claims that the tape was “distorted”). Trump backs GOPer Moore, who allegedly raped a 14 year old girl and was a sex predator who preyed on high school girls.

This is the GOP - and that’s what the Democrats have to remind everyone about.

re: #52 The Major

Her “going backward” really means that LGBT people are accepted in society in ways undreamed of in 1987 (seriously, when I was in law school, we never thought that “sodomy” would be legalized by the Supreme Court in 2003, nor that we’d have same-sex marriage in 2015). And, of course, women can continue to make the choice to have an abortion.

In her world, LGBT people would be in the closet and women would be getting dangerous backroom abortions. That’s all she cares about.

ETA: I had to chew out a pastor I like on Twitter last night because he was talking about how abortion was forbidden in the Didache. I pointed out the writer(s) of the Didache had no idea of the human reproductive cycle (“biology” then posited women contributed nothing to the pregnancy but a good attitude and the human ova wasn’t discovered until 1928 —not a typo); women were not involved in the writing of scripture for the most part, and even though the Didache came out in 100 AD or thereabouts, women continued and continue to get abortions. I was surprised I actually got some likes on this, because challenging someone on abortion is pretty fraught on Twitter.

If you converse with this pastor again, remind him:

Exodus 21:22 — if you assault a pregnant woman in such a way as to cause a miscarriage, but the woman is otherwise unharmed, the punishment is financial compensation. A much lesser penalty than for murder; because the people who codified these laws did not consider a fetus to be a person.

Numbers 5:11 — if the husband of a pregnant woman believes it’s not his, there’s a potion and ritual for God to decide. If she is indeed a cheater, she will miscarry. If the pregnancy continues, he must accept that it was a false accusation.

Christiane Amanpour is in a delicate position. She know that Trump lies about everything but if she actually said that, it might cause real harm to CNN. That is why she couches her rebuke carefully; Trump adheres to the Karl Rove philosophy — That we create our own reality — and that anything else doesn’t matter. Of course, Karl posed that in terms of our being an empire, but Trump is fast dismantling that and replacing it with the Trump mini empire in thrall to Putin.

Like I said, not as simple as some people would like to think it is. I remind anti-abortion proponents that we know what happens when women can’t get a legal and safe abortion. We resort to illegal and unsafe abortions. And we know this because we can see it happening in countries like Brazil and El Salvador, where legal abortion is very, very limited and hospital wards are full of women recovering from illegal abortions (Brazil) or women are being sent to prison when their miscarriage is considered an abortion (El Salvador).

What would be better would be to make birth control methods easily available, but anti-abortion proponents think this just encourages premarital sex, or that the Pill is some sort of evil abortifacient, or condoms aren’t safe. We know that making birth control methods available to all women, regardless of age, brings down the birth rate and the abortion rate, but gee, it also makes sluts, so Colorado discontinued its program. Fuck that noise.

OK, I got a bite. If he responds again, he’s getting both barrels. Don’t tell me conception is this bright line moment of life when half of all conceptions fail.

If life begins at conception, than god is the world’s greatest abortionist.

Last time I looked “life” predates any conception. I recall Mr. C. and myself both being alive when our kids were conceived. He’s talking about a novel combination of genetic material occurring. Doesn’t sound quite as definitive, but there it is.

And now the Screw York Times tries to justify that offensive article…

mobile.nytimes.com

Really - “we’re sorry if we offended anybody”? Pretty weak sauce: I saw most of the comments* are fairly articulate in trying to point out just what it was that readers found “offensive” - but (even allowing for the fact that the “apology” pre-dates the comments), the Times seems/seemed determined to mischaracterize the criticism. Fortunately, most of the commenters aren’t buying it…

“Life begins at conception” is rhetoric and not really relevant

In the u.s. and ianal the question is more like when would a constitutionally recognized and protected life begin

And even whenever those limited rights enure they must still be balanced and considered agsinst the rights of the mother
