I got QL’ed.

Can we add disrespect for the rule of law and trial by jury to the list of Donald Trump’s high crimes and misdemeanors? This Trump tweet is infuriating me like crazy, because I was on a federal civil jury last month and I have enormous respect for jurors who have to make the hard decisions.

I am on the verge of a fit of apoplexy. I can’t even imagine being one of those jurors right now.

One quick but important note: Garcia Zarate is not going free. The jury did convict him of a lesser charge of being a felon in possession of a gun, and he now awaits sentencing, which will be 16 months, two years, or three years in state prison. He has already served two years and will get credit for that time, but even if he is not given the maximum sentence, there is an outstanding U.S. Marshals Service warrant against him, and despite the sanctuary cities policy, San Francisco apparently does turn over undocumented immigrants to the feds when they have a warrant. So he is either getting deported, or spending one more year in prison first, and then getting deported.

Shooting from a high-rise in Reno, Nev.

washingtonpost.com

Apparently, only one person was injured in the hand as shooting went on for more than an hour. The police killed the shooter, who apparently was holding a hostage in an apartment.

66
Anymouse 🌹  Nov 30, 2017 • 8:52:07pm

The first two paragraphs of the article above:

A gunman was killed by police after he fired shots from an elevated position at a luxury apartment complex in downtown Reno, Nev., shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Barricaded in a room on the eighth floor of the high-rise building, the shooter sent bullets raining onto the street below.

No other casualties have been reported, except for a woman who was injured in the hand, the Sparks Police Department said in a news release. She did not need medical treatment.

This really is the entirety of their “case” against the man: ”He’s an illegal, thus he’s guilty!” They don’t feel that they have to present an actual case showing his guilt, they feel it should be self-evident because of his race. Thus they justice has “failed” not because the prosecution’s case was found wanting, but because a Latino man avoided LWOP or worse.

“Morally reprehensible.”

Because their party’s orthodoxy has chained them to the belief that only the rich can give money to the middle class, and the only way to make that happen is to give the rich as much money as possible. Even if that means actively picking the pockets of the poor and working class to do so.

Republicans have been on this “trickle-down” economics kick for a long time, as William Jennings Bryan (D-NE) noted in his “Cross of Gold” speech at the Democratic National Convention in 1896.

There are two ideas of government. There are those who believe that if you just legislate to make the well-to-do prosperous, that their prosperity will leak through on those below. The Democratic idea has been that if you legislate to make the masses prosperous their prosperity will find its way up and through every class that rests upon it.

And they cannot connect the word ricochet to the event.

In their minds, the only thing that matters is that he is an “illegal.” They feel that justice “failed” because that fact alone should have assured a guilty verdict. But that’s what happens when you attach political significance to a case like this, you have to have a favorable verdict or else people might question your beliefs.

And in the decades since, the Democratic ideal has worked more times than “trickle down” (or, more accurately, “voodoo economics”) ever has. When you give the poor and middle class money to spend, they will spend it readily on things they need and then on those they want. When you give that money to the rich, they generally sit on it or use it to secure greater wealth in whatever fashion is easiest. Once upon a time that might have been in expanding a business, but these days its in hedge funds and speculation.

There are no accidents with guns. You can be shown to have mishandled a gun, murder charge if you kill someone. Property damage? Off to jail.

Heaven forfend someone pass a law like that. So we go with the law we have, and that law says it was accidental and thus not murder.

Underlying this outrage is the idea that there should be different standards of guilt for different kinds of folk.

This is just a different version of the same differance Trump evoked when he declared the Central Park Five a priori guilty and deserving of death, and that plays out every fucking time the color chart is pulled out after a mass killing.

The rule behind the rule is that “the law” applies as the wingnuts demand. Which explains their simultaneous fear of a police state and cheering of police state tactics so long as they’re applied to The Wrong Kind of People. It also applies to the connected issue of who gets to use a firearm how, and who’s a “threat” that can be killed outright.

So they only show the first row cuz those are the only seats occupied?

One of the first photography texts I ever read showed exactly how this works. If there’s a small crowd and you want to make the speaker look important, shoot from the side along the first one or two rows, which will generally be full. If you want to make the speaker look insignificant, shoot from the rear of the venue or from behind the speaker, showing all the empty seats. There are countless other tactics like this. The camera may not lie, but the photographer can certainly make it say diametrically different things about the same event. And that doesn’t even count Photoshop and other editing tools.

They were told aloud that their jobs weren’t being saved, but they blew off the warnings because they wanted to believe a fantasy that the conman was selling them. So now they find out they’re gonna be jobless in time for Christmas and they feel “betrayed.”

I’m gonna guess that all those who bought into that fantasy of their jobs being “saved” have little or nothing saved up for the eventuality that they’d be laid off. The honest answer is most of these guys want those jobs because they’re the best they’re likely to secure with little or no formal education past a high school diploma/GED. The factories are going away and farm jobs are not steady enough to make a living off of unless you own part of the farm. In a big city they might be able to get menial jobs doing manual labor, but out in the small towns or Appalachia, even those jobs are hard to come by. So they take to the mines for the same reason their daddies did and their daddies before them: Because it’s a job that’s steady, pays well enough, and you don’t need to be smart to do it.

Our excellent Israeli vacation is coming to an end (as all good things must), our flight home departs on Saturday night. Tonight and tomorrow we will enjoy a quiet family Sabbath with our daughter and her family.

Zedushka has returned to his old self. Last night we went to a steakhouse just a few blocks from our hotel. Then he wanted to take a stroll and window shop the art galleries. Even though we both use canes and walking can be difficult, before we knew it we were at the Mamila Mall which leads into the Old City.

Mamila is an upscale shopping mall that caters to mostly tourists but also window-shopping locals. It was nice to see Jews, Arabs and international visitors all shopping and strolling together.

an ex-girlfriend moved with her hubby to the border region near Douglas, AZ back in the 80’s. It was a bit like No Country for Old Men; what used to be a sleepy backwater turned into the front line in a major drug war and a major human trafficking route.

Last I heard, her hubby had joined the AZ militia and erected a 30-foot observation tower on their property.

For that, I also heard that they have been enriched by a number of abandoned SUVs found on their property: the coyotes run them as far as they can, then proceed on foot. They report them to the police, but if nobody comes to claim them within 60 days (and nobody does), they get to keep them.

We need to find a way to create cost effective alternatives in local markets that deliver actual news without a right wing slant. Ideally, the effort would allow the populations in those areas to be informed, but also in the long term undermine the finances of the Right Wing rags and drain more money from their owners.

If I understand things correctly, in order to plead guilty of something, there has to be actual charges, and his pleading would still require the prosecution to accept. Thus, the two sides had to come to terms, which means he’s going to have to be willing to spill things. Plus, by pleading guilty, he’s giving up his fifth amendment rights, just like we’ve talked about for people who accept pardons.

Entering a guilty plea for lying to the FBI. That’s the tip of the iceberg on what Flynn did wrong. He was an undeclared foreign agent. He lied about his contacts. He lied to Trump (who didn’t care and kept him around anyways). Flynn also helped make personnel decisions for Trump.

Let that last bit sink in. Flynn, who had all these conflicts of interest, lied to everyone about his actions, and had power to determine who would be in the administration, is entering a guilty plea here. All of Trump’s picks are suspect. This is just another day in Trumpworld.

Let’s not forget that Flynn also lied to Trump and Pence. Trump is the only person in DC that’s actually clean. That’s why the DC Swamp Rats hate him so much. The real criminal is Mueller, he was Hillary’s bagman in Uranium 1.

Fox guest blames Obama for Michael Flynn’s indictment on charges of lying to the FBI

MATT SCHLAPP: I think what’s really important for people to know, which is, what ended up happening, what we’ve been reading about, is that the Obama administration was surveilling team Trump and unmasking on hundreds of occasions to see who these names were of the people they were surveilling. And that’s something that we’ve got to mention. Barack Obama fired Mike Flynn from a very important intelligence position in his administration. The relationship between Mike Flynn and the Obama administration was terrible, and the idea that they went back and actually tried to find wrongdoing on Mike Flynn is a very interesting and important part of this story.

The only ones who think that this is over are Trump’s idiotic supporters and his family who think their shit don’t stink.

They want a murder conviction? Simple: Stonekettle has already weighed in on this. Change the gun laws.

There are no accidents with guns. You can be shown to have mishandled a gun, murder charge if you kill someone. Property damage? Off to jail.

Heaven forfend someone pass a law like that. So we go with the law we have, and that law says it was accidental and thus not murder.

I don’t believe the white hunter who killed a woman after mistaking her for a deer has been charged with anything, even though he was illegally hunting after dusk.

When rational people regain control of Congress and the White House, they need to treat the situation like Reconstruction should have been treated the first time around: ALL the criminals must be exposed and prosecuted, and their property confiscated, and the centers of treasonous agitation and support, like Lubbock, should be last in line for any kind of federal support, grant, or benefit. Fundamentalist gifters and shills should be prosecuted for tax fraud and media liars for failure to register as foreign agents.

Maggie Habermann just now on CNN: ‘reading Ty Cobb’s statement it’s likely that they’ll push the line that Flynn lied so his testimony can’t be trusted.’

I literally flip to Fox and one of the Outsider stooges is in mid-statement: “Flynn is a liar, so how can anything he says be believed?”

There will be a lot of that in the next few days.

Just like a good guy with a gun becomes a lone wolf with a mass shooting…Flynn was a patriot up until a couple hours ago and now he is a liar that can’t be trusted.

No one rolls over no-longer-needed bodies like the conservative media and their super-absorbent wingnut watchers/listeners.

I was just getting around to watching the last Keith Olbermann “Trump is finished” video. Ol’ Keith seems to have known something as his number one route that would take down Trump was Flynn.

He makes it a point that when Mueller announced Flynn was doing a deal Thanksgiving week it made John Dean’s comments to Keith that Mueller is not shooting down with Flynn to get Manafort or Donny Jr…he is using Flynn to shoot up to get Trump.

Thanks Keith. I look forward to your next endeavors.

Here is the video if anyone wants a look back.

Anybody know what she’s referring too?

It’s based on a memo that was uncovered in Soviet archives in 1991. The memo was from KGB chief Victor Chebrikov to Yuri Andropov and has alleged details of a message from Kennedy to Andropov that was forwarded through Kennedy supporter John Tunney. The message asks for Andropov’s help in defeating Reagan, in return for a softer line on the Soviet Union. There is no original or first hand documentation for this message at all.
Ted Kennedy’s Soviet Gambit
The story appears almost exclusively in RWNJ sources. The linked Forbes story, by Reagan aide and Hoover Institute fellow Peter Robinson, is as close as I could find to an objective account.

Freepers are parroting this same line of bullshit over multiple threads. It’s hilarious.

Process crime.

IOW, there was no crime until the process started………………

At first glance this totally vindicates Trump. FLYNN WAS FIRED FOR LYING TO MIKE PENCE.

Is talking to Russians now a crime?

So what? Thats what incoming administrations do.

Nothing burger. But, MSM is salivating for something, anything…

Bring it…it will only end up vindicating Trump more than anything.

First of all, why am I required to tell the FBI anything?

Second, why am I required to tell the FBI the truth unless I’m under oath?

Third, why would I be under oath?

Is the answer to all of these questions “Never talk to the FBI?”

It is not the job of any citizen to cooperate with law enforcement under any circumstances; much less if you think they are trying to set you up.

Calm down everyone, you are all missing something blindingly obvious.

If Trump was colluding with the Russians BEFORE the election, why would he need Flynn as a go-between AFTER the election?

Mueller has just entirely destroyed the whole reason for his investigation to exist.

Aerosani were a kind of propeller driven snowmobile used extensively by the Red army in World War II. They had some obvious limitations in rough or hilly terrain but were very useful on frozen lakes and rivers. There were several types including armored troop carriers, one of which is shown in the background of the above image.

The wingnuts don’t seem to understand the concept of a plea deal, they seem to honestly believe that this single charge is the sum total of the case against Mike Flynn. The idea that he’d plead guilty to a single charge on the promise of a light sentence in exchange for testimony seems to be totally lost on them. They honestly believe that there’s not more that Mueller could be charging Mikey with right now.
