The Christmas Story begins 2,000 years ago with a mother, a father, their baby son…

And again, Trump reveals that he’s just pandering and knows nothing about this religion stuff, because in this myth Joseph wasn’t the father of Jesus.

But that doesn’t matter to hucksters like Franklin Graham, because he’s giving them political power like they’ve never had before and that’s all Graham cares about. It’s a confederacy of con men.

What the hell is wrong with Lindsey Graham.

It always come back to the same thing: most people don’t matter. It’s what unifies the GOP.

All their internal strife is just negotiating of the specific boundaries of who doesn’t matter.

I see today that Mitch “Windsock” McConnell has decided that his firm principles and moral grounding will be no bar to seating a child molester in the Senate (as long as he’s a Republican).

I also see the Eric Trump’s hired wife is also fully backing the child molester.

Trump family values.

This is an article about a police killing of a white guy here in my city, Mesa, Arizona, at the beginning of 2016. The cop who did the killing is currently on trial for 2nd degree murder.

The point of the article is not to minimize that people of color are being killed in droves, but that police themselves are simply out of control. Apparently the video of the killing, which has not been released, is horrible. I know Mark Geragos is awful, but this is his statement on the video:

I know why they have not released it. It’s not bloody. It’s the most chilling, horrific thing you’ve seen in your life. This kid was begging for his life. He raised his hands, did everything the cops told him to do. And then they just executed him. It’s bone chilling. One of the worst experiences I’ve ever had in my life is sitting in a court room with his widow, who watched it for the second time, and she literally went into convulsions. I had to grab her to hold her in a bear hug. It was just awful.

Ben has been with me for eight years and does nothing but the civil rights practice. I’ve been doing criminal and civil rights for 35 years. I’ve seen thousands of tapes. This is light years beyond anything I’ve ever seen… it burns a hole in your brain. I literally had nightmares about it.

It’s got to be horrible if Mark Geragos is shaken up. And I live in this city. Yeah, I don’t trust the police here.

What the hell is wrong with Lindsey Graham.

The whole Trump thing has unhinged him. He lost the last little piece of his soul in the healthcare debates and now he seems to have decided he is going to let all his evil out.

I’m going with what a few of us have been commenting about lately. Guys like Graham are at the ends of their careers and they may be seeing their party is in a free-fall and they are going to get in their licks until they are all out of Washington.

Yes, but also there’s the ones who’ve convinced themselves they can’t be wrong, which makes them at once rubes and conmen.

Trump’s empty religiosity is precisely up Graham’s alley, because Graham and the other megachurch indulgence sellers need and work towards a shallow, performative Christianity.

I really do look forward to the day when that corpulent fuck is sitting in court as his overpriced lawyers try to explain to a jury why calling up the FBI director and telling him “I hope you can let this go” is not an order to circular file an ongoing investigation. Especially when, right after you fire said director, you go around telling people it was because of the very same investigation.

This is Joy’s full statement, for the record:

This note is my apology to all who are disappointed by the content of blogs I wrote a decade ago, for which my choice of words and tone have legitimately been criticized.

As a writer, I pride myself on a facility with language — an economy of words or at least some wisdom in the selection. However, that clearly has not always been the case.

In 2007 I was a morning talk radio host and blogger, writing about Florida politics (a blog I maintained until 2011.) Among the frequent subjects of my posts was then-governor Charlie Crist, at the time a conservative Republican, whose positions on issues like gay marriage and adoption by same-sex couples in Florida shared headlines with widely rumored reports that he was hiding his sexual orientation. Those reports were the subject of lots of scrutiny: by LGBTQ bloggers, writers and journalists, conservative blogs, a controversial documentary film called “Outrage,” and even by the comedic writers at South Park. But it was my own attempt at challenging Crist on my blog that has now raised the issue of not just my choice of words, but what was and is in my heart.

Let me be clear: at no time have I intentionally sought to demean or harm the LGBT community, which includes people whom I deeply love. My goal, in my ham-handed way, was to call out potential hypocrisy.

Nonetheless, as someone who is not a member of the LGBT community, I regret the way I addressed the complex issue of the closet and speculation on a person’s sexual orientation with a mocking tone and sarcasm. It was insensitive, tone deaf and dumb. There is no excusing it - not based on the taste-skewing mores of talk radio or the then-blogosphere, and not based on my intentions.

In addition to friends and coworkers and viewers, I deeply apologize to Congressman Crist, who was the target of my thoughtlessness. My critique of anti-LGBT positions he once held but has since abandoned was legitimate in my view. My means of critiquing were not.

In the years since I went from blogger to opinion journalist, I have also learned, through brilliant friends and allies in the LGBT activist community, how to better frame my critiques of those who challenge people’s right to love who they want, marry them, and walk in the world as fully free people.

Re-reading those old blog posts, I am disappointed in myself. I apologize to those who also are disappointed in me. Life can be humbling. It often is. But I hope that you know where my heart is, and that I will always strive to use my words for good. I know better and I will do better.

The Logan Act is hands down the weakest and hardest to prosecute of the violations at play here. Fortunately the plethora of campaign finance violations, tax fraud, perjury, FARA & ongoing CFAA conspiracy should easily add up to a RICO indictment of the entire campaign. Trump ran a corrupt criminal enterprise in league with a foreign adversary designed from its inception to subvert and defraud the United States.

Yes, they should. Yes he did. And he violates the emoluments clause every day.

But the Senate no longer passes legislation in regular order, after hearings with witnesses and impartial analysis. Judges are no longer removed from a appointment list when the Bar Association deems them unqualified. Raising the debt ceiling is no longer an apolitical decision. Need I go on?

I agree that Mueller’s not going to base his case on Logan Act violations, but he’s already showing a willingness to pierce the attorney client privilege with the crime fraud exception.

I would expect Mueller to use RICO and FARA, and also work with state prosecutors to dial in cases against Trump’s syndicate in a fashion that makes it tough, if not impossible for Trump to pardon people (even though anyone accepting pardons would still have to allocute to the crime under Burdick).

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has not yet decided whether to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital or whether to proceed immediately in moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city. That’s according to his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner.

Kushner said Sunday that the president continues to weigh his options ahead of an announcement on the matter that is expected this week.

“The president is going to make his decision,” Kushner said in a rare public appearance at an event hosted by the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. “He is still looking at a lot of different facts.”

Kushner’s comments were his first public remarks on his efforts to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. And, they came as he faces increasing scrutiny over actions taking during the transition period following former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s guilty plea on charges of lying to the FBI.

Shortly before Kushner spoke, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned that American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital would jeopardize the White House’s Mideast peace efforts.

“Any American step related to the recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel, or moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, represents a threat to the future of the peace process and is unacceptable for the Palestinians, Arabs and internationally,” Abbas told a group of Arab lawmakers from Israel, according to the official Wafa news agency.

OT On black Friday I ordered some items from amazon. They were supposed to come to me by 9PM. The 9PM deadline came and went. I figured it would come by the next day. I was out all day on Saturday. Again the package did not come. On Sunday morning amazon told me that the package would come on Wednesday. I cancelled the order. They said that were in contact with the shipper (amazon) and when the package got to them I would get my money back within 2-3 days. Nothing has been updated since. Do you think I should call them or give them a few more days?

That’s unlike Amazon, call them. I have Prime and have gotten a bunch of credit lately by choosing the free no rush shipping option but it’s supposed to be an option. They only time they’ve missed a deadline for me is the one time their delivery driver lost the gate code to get into the community.

yeah, i know we’re sorta kidding

i believe in the system, election results (when they are untampered with) and that the things and people i vote for dont always win.
ive seen a lot and dont always like who ends up representing me / us
bush/reagan etc were not my choice(s). they were reluctantly my president(s)

this administration, president, congress, cabinet, do not represent me
they have as much as said it
they act it
they prove it daily
they dont want to represent me

that’s why there is no longer just one “we” because they did it

It really tells you a lot that Graham thinks this is the best example of a Christian we’ve had in his life. Graham’s a monster and I don’t have much respect for his Dad either. I always thought even if I’m not personally religious at all that Jimmy Carter did a much better job living up to the teachings of Christ than someone like Trump or any of the Religious Right hypocrites who embrace him do. When’s the last time Franklin used the power of his influence and name ot help out people less well off than him? I won’t go No True Christian because that’s not my place but Graham clearly sees his religion as an excuse to be a judgmental douchebag than to help pepole.

My husband used to get material from Franklin in regard to his “Samaritan’s Purse” ministry which I guess is supposed to help unfortunate people in various parts of the world. I used to throw away the magazines whenever I saw them because Franklin is an odious human being who has insinuated himself in politics in an ugly way. I recall his attacks on President Obama who is a much better Christian than Trump could ever be (even though I suspect that Obama is more agnostic than anything).

I just wonder what Franklin and other Christianists (like Falwell Jr., and Jim Bakker) are going to say when Trump inevitably falls.

re: #112 Eclectic Cyborg

I see recent polls are showing Moore up 6 in AL.

Roy Moore will win. He only stalked and molested teenage girls, not boys. That is not a crime to the evangelicals, and he has their full support. Unfortunately, they make up about half the population here in Alabama. I can guarantee you they were all told how to vote earlier today in church.

Also, Doug Jones went after the KKK group that bombed a church in Birmingham and killed 4 girls in Sunday school (they don’t count to significant portion of the population here though because they were black and girls). He even managed to get convictions. This will actually hurt him with the evangelicals. Never forget the Southern Baptist church started because of their support of slavery. They have not changed in all these years. I know because I have lived with them all my life.

far as I can tell from what I’m seeing on the internet and in the news, Jones is the only one out there in public. And he’s out there every single day. Moore is in hiding when he’s not at private events.

For those who haven’t yet decided on tonight’s TV viewing…

At 10pm, TCM is running “Carmen Jones” (1954). It’s AWESOME, I highly recommend.

Based on the Bizet opera “Carmen”, they move the story from some 18th century French war/soldiers, to 1940’s Tuskegee. Starring Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belefonte, 20th century Hollywood arrangements of Bizet’s music, all new lyrics (in English).

Supporting cast includes Pearl Bailey, Diahann Carroll. There’s even a scene at a nightclub featuring Max Roach as the drummer, and Alvin Ailey as one of the dancers.

Hey as a devout Episcopalian, I think you may like this story my aunt told me about our uncle who was a priest. One of my grandfather’s nieces or nephews got married in an Episcopalian church. This must have been Pre-Vatican II so my Great Grandmother, a devout Catholic was sort of worried about what the church would think of her attending a wedding in one. My Great Uncle gave her the blessing. My Aunt was saying he was liberal in other matters too. I took that to mean his racial attitudes given his parish was in a predominately African-American community and his order- the Holy Ghost Fathers specialize in that sort of thing.

We’re talking to Opus Dei’s right even since OD accepted the legitmacy of the post Vatican II popes and even liked many of them like JPII and Benedict. I knew some quite conesrvative Catholics growing up. I got into a fun little furball with a priest at our diocesan convention last month on that issue. My universalism slips right off the scale into heresy quite quickly. Doesn’t help that I consider the incarnation to be the symbol of our atonement with God, not the death & resurrection.

It’d be funny if Mitt ran and lost in the primary anyhow. Not that I like Hatch or Trump but Mitt’s attitude here seems to be like the presidency, he thinks he’s entitled to this seat.

Then why the fuck do we have to make abortion illegal? If it’s not the gov’t problem to help the poor, why is is the gov’t’s problem to enforce morality?

Reminder: scripture DOES NOT oppose abortion.

Exodus 21:22 — to assault a pregnant woman in such a way as to cause miscarriage… is not murder. It is not a capital crime. The penalty is financial compensation, because it is not the killing of a human being.

Numbers 5:11 — if a pregnant woman’s husband believes it’s not his, there’s a potion and ritual prescribed to determine the truth of the matter. If it’s indeed not his, terminating the pregnancy is REQUIRED.

Further reminder. The Southern Baptist Convention applauded the Roe decision and saw abortion opposition as a “Catholic fixation.” The only reason why the RR uses abortion is because it was a cynic tool to build bridges between them and the Catholics who the Fundies never liked that much anyhow.

Ha, you’re right. I can just see the headline banner now: “MIDDLE EASTERN MAN INCITING REVOLT IN INNER CITIES.” I could even see a full-blown modern-day interpretation of the Gospel story, with Jesus as an inner-city social worker, and the Religious Right as the Pharisees, and the “crucifixion” would be him getting shot by a white terrorist nutjob, arrested as an “illegal immigrant”, and ultimately executed for a crime he didn’t commit.

When they say collusion is not a crime, they’re partially right - there’s no legal charge for collusion. The more appropriate term is conspiracy, which is what Manafort and Gates were charged with

That’s why they love saying there’s ‘no collusion.’ And that’s why at every turn we should be pointing out that the act of collusion with Russia results in a charge of conspiracy against the United States.

One of my wingnut friends actually thinks this is cleveR:
During a recent press conference, a reporter with MSNBC hollered from the press corps…

“Where is President Trump hiding his tax returns?”

Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, astutely responded…
“We’ve found a very secure place and I’m certain they won’t be found.”

“And just where is that?” said the reporter sarcastically.

Mrs. Sanders grinned sardonically and said…

“They are underneath Obama’s college records, his passport application, his immigration status as a student, his funding sources to pay for college, his college records, and his Selective Service registration.”

“Next question?”

i don’t know if SHS actually said that though. The stupid thing about this is Obama wasn’t casting doubt on other people’s credentials to be President. He never attacked McCain or Romney’s qualifications. Trump on the other hand did attack HRC’s financials.

Yep. It’s pretty amazing. 2 years ago I actually liked Senator Sanders quite a bit. I wasn’t sure he was presidential material or not but I thought at least if he ran he’d get people thinking about some issues that needed discussing but I’ve changed my mind. I dislike the guy. 3. Many on the far left share an authoritarian streak and desire to burn it all down with the alt right, despite the fact that their position on social and economic issues is more in line with Democrats.

Just recently came across this Politico piece from January about that show.

The 1987 TV Miniseries That Predicted a Russian Takeover of America
Long since forgotten, ‘Amerika’ was a commercial and artistic flop. Watching it today makes for uncomfortable viewing.

I love old TV miniseries so I definitely want to check this out.

Thundersnow is indeed EPIC!!!!

I still remember the first time I experienced it here in Ohio. January 1977. Cold as low as it has been in my lifetime…the year of natural gas shortages, etc. One night late I saw some flashes out the window and wondered what was going on. Ran outside to see lightning and hear thunder in a heavy downfall of big snowflakes.

If the Lord Jesus came down to earth, he’d never get the chance to run for office - he’d get shot well before then because he’d be a brown person hanging around in the wrong parts of town.

Thus why a good friend of mine always said the future symbol that New Christians would wear was a tiny silver revolver on a chain.

That used to both confuse and piss off a lot of people.

Back when trump was just a corrupt businessman he didn’t have to keep track of his lies.

After over 40 years of lying hundreds of times a week he has no way or interest of keeping track of them now. That’s what his lawyers are for.

And his lawyers are shitty because who that was a real decent attorney would work for the pig? He wants lawyers that do what he wants, not what is necessarily legal. And then he doesn’t pay.

It is clear this was during the time someone had possession of Sarah Huckleberries’ cell phone and hacked her Twitter account.

We need people on the left to buy out more media so that we have a chance to get our message across. Maybe Tom Steyer should be spending his money on that project instead of his impeachment mission.

Where else, in any profession do we say, “Let’s hire this guy because he has zero experience” ? Yet a good portion of this country thought that and voted that piece of garbage into one of the most complex and powerful positions in the world.

And God how we’ve paid. And will pay for decades.
