In Which the President of the US Proudly Endorses an Accused Child Molester for the US Senate: “Go Get ‘Em, Roy!”

Politics • Views: 34,617

After initially making some vague noise that sounded kind of like disapproval of Roy Moore, today our disgusting so-called president came all out in favor of electing to the US Senate an equally disgusting extreme right wing religious fanatic and accused child molester tied to white supremacist groups, a guy who’s been removed from the Alabama judiciary twice in his ugly career.

The reason: so he can help pass a massive handout to the super-rich, at the expense of the under-privileged and middle class.

I know I’ve said it before, but this drives the point home again: our country is in the hands of evil people with evil intentions. And “GOP” now stands for “Grand Old Pedophiles.”

Today in Trumpeffect:

“You won’t feel like you’re in China when you’re on our buses,” the ad promised in a section that touted being able to ride home with “passengers like you.”

A firestorm quickly erupted over the ads, and the company issued a quick apology.

“We made a remark based on the fact that our competitor mostly handles Chinese international students,” the company said in an apology sent over email. “The remark is being interpreted as a slap in the face of all non-caucasians for some reason, and that it not how it was intended.”

Yes. Yes, they are.

No — they aren’t that stupid, they are that dishonest. Flake’s only real complaint against Trump was style not substance (oh wait — Trump has no substance); i.e. Trump was on board with everything the Republicans proposed and that’s good enough for Flake. If Trump didn’t tweet, Flake would have had no objection to him. Even the supposed dismay over Trump’s association with Russia seems not to be too serious — otherwise the GOP would be lambasting him for not implementing the additional sanctions.

There’s Grand Canyon National Park.

Then there’s Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument.

The latter would be on the chopping block in the same fashion with the same consequences. GOP wouldn’t mind exploiting ‘em.

By the same logic, GOP would look to reduce size of Arches and Canyonlands since there are uranium finds and other mineral deposits around Moab too.

re: #78 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

What little we know of Trump’s tax records and his business operations is that he’d benefit from all of the Tax Scam bill’s provisions - especially those that drop the passthrough tax rate.

His companies operate 100s of passthroughs. LLCs, LLPs, Partnerships, and S corps. All of them would see the tax rate drop - which means the owner/partner/member (Trump) sees his rate drop from 39.6% to 25%.

Trump gets nearly 37% cut in his taxes thanks to the tax scam on each one of his businesses. (14.6 point cut). Most everyone else sees 1-2% in the middle class. Those making over $300,000 a year are guaranteed to come out ahead.

But the middle class, the very folks that the GOP claimed were the biggest beneficiaries, are the ones getting screwed here. All their deductions and credits go away and are replaced with “expanded standard deductions” that don’t really take the place of the itemized deductions they used to have.

Sure, it might be simpler, but you’re now simply paying more tax.

I know I will. I did my math, and I’ll end up subsidizing Donald Fucking Trump and his millionaire pals from day one of this scheme because they have income from passthroughs, and I’m a schlub who gets paid in salary/compensation.

I live in a high tax state, have SALT deductions, plus mortgage interest, medical expenses, and those combined will not be covered by the expanded standard deduction.

Hey, I’m okay if I were paying more in tax and poor folks get more out of the deal - higher services, more medical coverage, etc., but this is simply redistributing my wealth to Donald Fucking Trump.

Of his actual followers, probably about 50% are fake…average is a bit lower than that (I googled):

thehill.com

Congress is followed by a lot of phonies: a new study shows a large percentage of accounts following legislators on Twitter are fake.

Jon Tilton, the general manager for digital marketing firm Advocacy Media, ran a follower check last weekend on every member of Congress using StatusPeople, a tool designed specifically to check for fake followers on Twitter. He found that an average of 38 percent of accounts following representatives on Twitter and 42 percent of those following senators are a combination of fake and inactive accounts.

re: #126 Belafon

The bill they bring back still has to pass the rules of the Senate, such has the Byrd rules and reconciliation.

According to the NY Mag story:

McConnell’s mistake has two big implications. First and foremost, it means the Senate will almost certainly have to vote on a tax bill again before one goes into law. Previously, it looked as though Paul Ryan had enough votes in the House to pass the Senate bill as is. This took pressure off the party’s conference committee (the House and Senate leaders tasked with reconciling each chamber’s bills). Worst-case scenario, the House could just rubber-stamp the Senate’s work. Now, that option is deeply undesirable. It remains overwhelmingly likely that Republicans will pass a giant tax cut. But their task is now a bit more difficult.

The second implication is that McConnell is going to need new revenue. In all probability, Republicans are going to drop the alternative-minimum tax rate well below 20 percent. That will put the bill’s price tag over $1.5 trillion. Right now, some of the House’s most heinous revenue raisers — including the infamous tax on graduate student tuition — are not in the Senate bill. Chances are now somewhat higher that these odious provisions will make it into the final legislation, as Republicans will once again be desperate for pay-fors. That said, it’s also possible that the GOP will simply revise their bill’s corporate rate up to 22 percent, now that President Trump has given the party permission to do so.

The consistent assumption of good faith on the parts of conservatives and bad faith on liberals by the media is maddening and depressing. Again, they will believe with all credulity anything someone from the right-wing no matter how lacking in credibility they are, and will throw anyone on the left under the bus under the assumption that they are the monsters that conservatives keep projecting onto them.

I don’t know how you fight that sheer amount of maddening batshittery, where good faith and bad faith are always seen as their sheer opposites by those who should be the most vigorous about this shit.

They even fucked over investors!

The new tax on stock investors hidden in the Senate tax plan

Some of the largest fund companies in the country are pushing back against a little-noticed provision in the Senate tax bill they argue will cost investors millions.

The provision would prevent investors from minimizing taxes by choosing the specific shares that are being sold when they sell part of a position. Instead, investors would have to sell their oldest shares first.

If the provision becomes law, “markets will work less well. Our fund managers will have their hands tied, and our shareholders will owe more in taxes,” said Thomas Faust, chief executive of Eaton Vance Corp., a fund firm that manages more than $419 billion.

Rep. Farenthold: I’d ‘settle this Aaron Burr-style’ if senators resisting repeal were men

Washington (CNN)Rep. Blake Farenthold of Texas said in a radio interview Friday he might “settle this Aaron Burr-style” — an apparent reference to the 1804 duel when Burr killed Alexander Hamilton — if GOP holdouts on the Senate health care efforts were men from his home state of Texas rather than women.

“Listen, the fact that the Senate does not have the courage to do some of the things that every Republican in the Senate promised to do is just absolutely repugnant to me,” he told Texas radio host Bob Jones on “Keys 1440 AM.” “Some of the people that are opposed to this — there are some female senators from the Northeast — if it was a guy from South Texas, I might ask him to step outside and settle this Aaron Burr-style.”
Republican Sens. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said last week that they would oppose Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement.

What a douchebag. History gives us the perfect response to wannabe duelists, by Rudolf Virchow, a 19th century doctor. en.wikipedia.org

As a cofounder and member of the liberal party (Deutsche Fortschrittspartei) he was a leading political antagonist of Bismarck. He was opposed to Bismarck’s excessive military budget, which angered Bismarck sufficiently enough to challenge Virchow to a duel in 1865. Of the two versions, one has Virchow declining because he considered dueling an uncivilized way to solve a conflict. The second has passed into legend, but was well documented in the contemporary scientific literature. It has Virchow, having been the challenged and therefore entitled to choose the weapons, selecting two pork sausages, a normal sausage and another one, loaded with Trichinella larvae. His challenger declined the proposition as risky.

Because we assume the president has to speak for all Americans even when he clearly and openly refuses to do so. We have so many assumptions baked into our political process that it simply can’t handle openly cynical bad faith behavior on this large and frequent a scale.

This screwup — like most of the tax plan’s oddest features — was born of a math problem. Due to arcane Senate rules, the Trump tax cuts can only add $1.5 trillion to the deficit over the next decade. Last Thursday, the Senate tax bill already cost about that sum, and then McConnell started making expensive promises to his few holdouts. Susan Collins wanted a $10,000 property tax deduction for Americans in high-tax states; Ron Johnson wanted a 23 percent business-income deduction for the company that his family owns. This left the Senate Majority Leader searching under the tax code’s couch cushions for new sources of revenue.

Eventually, he came upon the corporate alternative minimum tax (AMT). At present, most corporations face a 35 percent (statutory) rate on their income. But by availing themselves of various tax credits and deductions, most companies can get their actual rates down far below that figure. To put a limit on just how far, them corporate AMT prevents companies from paying any less than 20 percent on their profits (or, more precisely, on the profits that they fail to hide overseas).

The GOP had originally intended to abolish the AMT. But on Fridpay, with the clock running out — and money running short — Senate Republicans put the AMT back into their bill. Unfortunately for McConnell, they forgot to lower the AMT after doing so.

This is a big problem. The Senate bill brings the normal corporate rate down to 20 percent — while leaving the alternative minimum rate at … 20 percent. The legislation would still allow corporations to claim a wide variety of tax credits and deductions — it just renders all them completely worthless. Companies can either take no deductions, and pay a 20 percent rate — or take lots of deductions … and pay a 20 percent rate.

With this blunder, Senate Republicans have achieved the unthinkable: They’ve written a giant corporate tax cut that many of their corporate donors do not like

Rude Pundit has a simple question for Alabamians.

(Hidden because of really NSFW language)

Look, look, we all get it, Alabama. You really, really care about ending abortion. Abortion is more important than anything else in the entire Senate campaign for a really big percentage of you. It’s more important than jobs (and, to be fair, the state has only a 3.6% unemployment rate). It’s more important than the rest of health care and, well, obviously, education, (both of which, to be fair, place Alabama near the bottom of the nation). It’s more important than whether or not Republican Roy Moore finger-fucked a 14-year-old girl through her panties while he took her hand and used it fondle himself. We totally get where you’re at. We may not like it. We may think it’s about one of the most viciously backwards, dumbass redneck, fucked-up things we’ve ever heard, but at least you’re clear about how deep a pile of shit you’re willing to stand in because you think you’re protecting “babies.”

And, today, you even got the criminal president to go all in on Moore. This morning, Trump not only tweeted his support for Moore (and, fuck you, if it’s under Trump’s name, it’s Trump’s), but he called Moore to offer encouragement by saying, according to Moore, “Go get ‘em, Roy,” which is what Moore told himself in the food court at the Dothan mall. And Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a man whose dick gets semi-stiff when he guts medical care for the poor, has backed off his call for Moore to get out of the race and now says he’ll “let the people of Alabama make the call” on whether an accused pedophile and proud lawbreaker should be in the Senate. All for tax cuts, man, all for tax cuts.

Let’s be clear here, Alabama. Moore ain’t on trial. In posts and tweets supporting Moore, his idiot followers are acting like Moore is facing a jury. Moore is running for an elected office. The worst thing that can happen to him is that he doesn’t get that office. No one (as of now) is saying he oughta be arrested for sexual assault and for drooling over high school girls at JC Penney and, well, the high school. Roy Moore doesn’t have to be guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in order to lose the election. These are political decisions, not judicial ones.

Richard Cordray, a Democrat whose resignation as head of the U.S. consumer bureau last month triggered a political battle over who should replace him, plans to run for governor of Ohio, an advisor said on Monday.

Cordray will make the announcement at an event on Tuesday at a restaurant in his home town of Grove City, Ohio, said the advisor, who asked to remain anonymous. Cordray will later tour Ohio, meeting with Democratic activists, community leaders and voters, the advisor said.

Our system truly does reward those acting in bad faith and punishes those who show good faith. It’s a cynical, broken system that continues to reward assholes precisely because their assholes and treats admittance of flaw as proof of guilt.

The only solution is a race to the bottom where everyone screws each other. Nice guys finish last because somehow assholishness and projection have been exalted into virtues.

When Trump attacks the “media” I for one do not believe the “media” really mind. At least the big corporate media.

They all benefit by de-fanging the FCC. They all benefit by huge tax cuts.

I have no reason to believe the Comcast/NBCU has any higher ground to stand on than Trump. Remember, for years Trump made them money, they still wanted him to host Apprentice even after revelations about Trump.

It is a bad day and there will be others.

I get strength from watching that video of the protests out in Utah. And seeing an article about Trump voters feeling duped.

More and more people will see this for what it is and Trump will make more missteps like his tweets over the weekend.

It is a slow build, but it has some of the same feel as Nixon now. He has collusion to worry about as he builds his own case for obstruction.

I get the feeling he is not good under pressure and he really isn’t under that much pressure yet.

Nixon lost it, and Trump is no Nixon. He is a crook and he isn’t adept at politics.

This heavy metal music made by a machine will rock your human face off

An artificial intelligence recently released a death metal album created entirely by algorithms. This isn’t the first time someone’s programmed a machine to create new music. But this time is different. Because it’s actually quite good. And that’s pretty spooky.

DADABOTS’ debut album was created, musically, by a neural-network studying the work of a human metal band called Krallice. Basically the AI listened to all the sounds it was fed and started trying to guess what more of the same would sound like it. It did this a few million times before it was able to create its own original work.

I was once told by a retired judge that it was always instructive to watch which crimes that a given judge came down hardest on. 99% of the time, he claimed, that was the crime the judge felt most tempted by in his own life. I’d suggest that is what the men are fearing here.

Changing subjects abruptly …

There are things I try to refuse the possibilities. I saw jaunte’s comment yesterday, and some wheels started spinning… I refuse to believe my hunch is true… but … Morovis’ mayor is from the opposition party of governor Ricky Rosselló. Carmen Yulín Cruz is from the opposition party too. Hormigueros, San Germán, Mayagüez have mayors from the opposition party. All these mayors have railed against the state government for being to slow.

San Juan and Mayagüez are both in unique positions. Mayagüez is a PPD bastion, a strong economical center, and wields strong political power in the area. San Juan is nominally a PNP bastion, but whoever is in power gains a strong influence. It it easier for them to bypass the state government. Morovis doesn’t have either. It’s disheartening.

Then there’s the tax bill that will kill whatever is left of PR’s economy. Already Carmen Yulín is making the rounds around the US speaking against the bill. Lo and behold, the official PR representative in the House of the US Congress, Jennifer Gonzalez, is in favor of this bill. She’s rightfully getting hammered by local analysts (Sorry, it’s in Spanish). This makes me want to scream my lungs out. Our economy is in the brink of collapse (with some municipalities’ economies effectively destroyed), and all Gonzalez cares is getting statehood???

I don’t know exactly what Seder tweeted that was the stated reason for him being fired. However, if Seder wrote it, he is the only one responsible for that. It was in public with his name on it. As we say here so often, no one is due a platform and MSNBC has the right to give or deny as they choose.

THIS is what I was worried about with the sudden zero tolerance and the demands that any infraction of what are now new standards (for today anyway, I don’t expect it to last) of behavior and speech without any sense of proportion. How many discussions of exactly this have we had here of late? It bites both ways and we know how well and quickly the right can weaponize and organize.

Yes, Seder joked about it, Moore did it. These things are not the same. Of course they aren’t yet how many on the left make them equivalent every damned day with demands that our own guys resign on a whiff of what we are *today* calling misbehavior? I’ve heard rape jokes all my life. We all have. Now we have grown more sensitive to them but it’s been a real recent development that started on the left with recognition that cavalier jokes about rape perpetuates rape culture. We know the right doesn’t share this attitude but they sure know how to weaponize it and hoist us on our own purity petard.

I get what you are trying to say, but fundamental comparison doesn’t match up. Seder wasn’t joking about pedophilia, he was mocking people being apologists for a pedophile. He wasn’t perpetuating anything. So basically Moore is getting endorsed for a behavior that Seder got fired for condemning.

As I said, I don’t know what he said that got him fired. I thought I saw something about him making a Polansky rape joke. Regardless, my point was not that these are equivalent, which I why I stated clearly, I thought, that they most certainly weren’t. It’s that when WE go scorched earth zero tolerance on our own with no sense of proportion then we are handing them the weapon and begging them to stab us with it. We know they aren’t going to turn it on themselves regardless of how egregious the behavior. This is exactly what we’re seeing now .
