Yet Another Exceptional NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert: Phoebe Bridgers

Music • Views: 32,699

YouTube

Nov. 27, 2017 | Stephen Thompson —Phoebe Bridgers’ songs come laden with sly, finely detailed observations about unsuccessful flirtations with hypnotherapy, unsettling conversations about Jeffrey Dahmer, and everything in between. Her phrasing is impeccable — warm, cool, conversational, gently slurred — but her songs also swim in the self-aware obsessions and messy meanderings of an unquiet mind.

Joined by Ethan Gruska and Rob Moose, Bridgers popped up at the Tiny Desk a couple weeks after the release of her full-length debut, Stranger In The Alps. Together, they celebrated the occasion with languid renditions of three of the album’s best songs: the sad and seductive “Demi Moore,” a drastically muted “Motion Sickness” and a piano-driven take on Bridgers’ first-ever single, “Killer.”

Set List

“Demi Moore”

“Motion Sickness”

“Killer”

MUSICIANS

Phoebe Bridgers (vocals and guitar); Ethan Gruska (piano); Rob Moose (violin)

Silly question, but is he a skier? As someone who appreciates guns and does shooting sports, I always hate it when a non-shooter gets a rah-rah “limited edition”, “signature”, or what have you firearm in their name. Other such things as well. Were it the great woman skier you’re always talking of - Lindsey Vaughn, IIRC? - that wouldn’t even phase me. But I’ve never heard of him on the slopes.

I assume he does ski. The skis were designed to his specifications, including materials used, camber profile, and clamps. Not seeing any pictures of him skiing on a cursory Google search, so who knows. I feel ya on non-participants getting their own line of product, that’s bull.

It’s now 33 degrees and the snow is falling thick in huge flakes.

Shoveling in the morning will probably suck … : >

That’s cool. The specs bit says a lot. I’ve seen a guy holding a target shotgun supposedly for him that really badly didn’t fit. Sounds like that’s not the case here.

We’re gonna get that tomorrow with a good 30 degree drop. Of course we were at 80 with about 96% humidity today so that’s going to feel real good.

My middle son came to ask me a pretty serious question. A singer he likes, Melanie Martinez, has been accused by Timothy Heller, also a woman, of rape. He was asking whether or not he should listen to her music.

All I could tell him was to take the accusation seriously, research and wait for more information, and decide for himself. I told him that if I found out it was true I would have trouble, because rape is far beyond just being a jerk.

Viral Facebook photo of workers brandishing guns at Milwaukee city worksite draws protest

A photo showing three white, city-hired subcontractors allegedly openly brandishing guns while on a worksite near N. 19th and W. Meinecke Ave. went viral Monday.

The photo, which was shared and commented on hundreds of times on Facebook, showed two of the workers had holstered weapons on their belts, while a third had a gun in his hand. The photo angered people in the African-American community and three Milwaukee aldermen issued a press release Monday, calling the photo “appalling.”

My guess is all 3 of these guys are racist suburban morons. The city shouldn’t be contracting with such pussies. I know a lot of city guys that can work in the inner city without guns.

Home now. My brother is in his room and he was still pretty “stoned” from the various “dope ‘em up and make ‘em happy” drugs. But he sounded good considering he had his throat cut into and shoved around. Hopefully he’ll get out tomorrow afternoon.

My mother thought I was too tired to drive home, but I wasn’t going to sleep in my brother’s bed, which is just horrid on my back. I promised her I’d be back at 8 am. She wants to see my brother in the hospital, but I’m going to try and dissuade her from that, because walking in from the parking lot would take her half an hour, if parking’s anything like today.

Frank Zappa’s Vault

As far as I know this room was emptied out and its contents stored offsite somewhere by Alex Winter and Joe Travers, ostensibly paid for by the Zappa Family Trust (Ahmet and Diva) and the more than $2 million that was raised during a Kickstarter for a film Alex is working on. Lady Gaga bought the old Zappa house up in the Hollywood Hills off Lauren Canyon Blvd., which includes Zappa’s studio The Utility Muffin Research Kitchen.

The GOP needs to be wiped out and become a minority party and then God willing a dead power. It’s sad that the party co-founded by Abe Lincoln has to go to this but they deesrve it.

I still remember how Republicans forced BSRNC to fire Melissa Harris-Perry. Never fails they focus on someone who stands up to these thugs and they always get their way. And now they are in attack mode with Joy Reid.

The RepubliKKKlan Party is acting more and more like the Soviet Communist Party with each passing day…

Was Melissa actually fired? I thought she resigned rather than making the changes to the show that the network demanded.

I don’t ever link (or hardly read) The Intercept but this story is fucked up if true.

TRUMP WHITE HOUSE WEIGHING PLANS FOR PRIVATE SPIES TO COUNTER “DEEP STATE” ENEMIES

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION is considering a set of proposals developed by Blackwater founder Erik Prince and a retired CIA officer — with assistance from Oliver North, a key figure in the Iran-Contra scandal — to provide CIA Director Mike Pompeo and the White House with a global, private spy network that would circumvent official U.S. intelligence agencies, according to several current and former U.S. intelligence officials and others familiar with the proposals. The sources say the plans have been pitched to the White House as a means of countering “deep state” enemies in the intelligence community seeking to undermine Trump’s presidency.

The creation of such a program raises the possibility that the effort would be used to create an intelligence apparatus to justify the Trump administration’s political agenda.

“Pompeo can’t trust the CIA bureaucracy, so we need to create this thing that reports just directly to him,” said a former senior U.S. intelligence official with firsthand knowledge of the proposals, in describing White House discussions. “It is a direct-action arm, totally off the books,” this person said, meaning the intelligence collected would not be shared with the rest of the CIA or the larger intelligence community. “The whole point is this is supposed to report to the president and Pompeo directly.”

The Trump Administration’s foreign policy incompetence and its possible consequences, Exhibit #3,651:

Washington’s potential recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel could prompt the cutting of Turkey’s diplomatic relations with Israel, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Dec. 5.

“This could go as far as cutting our diplomatic relations with Israel. You cannot take such a step,” Erdoğan told a parliamentary group meeting of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

He described Jerusalem as a “red line” for Muslims and said Ankara will therefore take measures in the event of a possible U.S. move, including convening the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul.

Such a move would not only be a violation of international law, but also “a big blow to the conscience of the humanity,” Erdoğan said.

“Has the U.S. completed everything and only this is left?” he added.

I thought it was confined to the United States - and also some unspecified nuclear disaster had taken place on the West Coast…..all of it came together and then Christian fanatics within the US military wiped out the US Congress (during the SOTU address, IIRC), seized power, declared martial law and then proclaimed the Republic of Gilead.

It’s been years since I’ve read the book - at least a decade. But yeah, there was some kind of infertility issue combined with a host of ecological disasters.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro.

There are still lots of people who think that Trump’s the one normalizing behaviors that the GOP then emulates. They’ve got it backwards.

GOP normalizes the behavior - Trump’s style is the most blunt expression of the amoral hypocrisy - and others pick up on it because they think it’s successful at destroying his enemies.

Where do we start in recent years? How about with the Senate GOP and McConnell, whose obstructionism stole a Supreme Court seat from Obama and whose actions have tilted the judiciary for decades to come:

Trump benefits from that obstructionism by getting to make picks, but it’s the GOP who gifted him that opportunity. He inherited the picks because the GOP blocked Obama.

Now we’re seeing Moore use the same strategy in his Senate run. Attack women who’ve accused him, claim they’re liars or part of a conspiracy. Lo and behold the RNC is back with the funds to try and pull him to the finish line.

This GOP isn’t the party of law and order. It’s the party of sabotage, chaos, and child molesters. Oh, and pushing tax cuts for millionaires while denying kids health coverage (CHIP).

How do we get out of this mess? Fighting every day - as tiring at it may be. And making sure you get out there and vote in every goddamned election no matter what.

Because we got to this point because far too many people are apathetic and think both parties are the same and that judicial picks don’t matter (they’re the ones who ultimately can mean life or death or reduced civil/voting rights for 10s of millions of people with a few chosen words). It didn’t just happen in 2016.

It began years back, when the GOP not only won Congress, but then got to gerrymand districts in their favor to cement their hold on power.

Yeah, that John Yoo (he of the terror memos infamy). He wrote up a piece with a co-author claiming that the president has the right to increase or decrease the size of a national monument.

Of course, every admin before this has abided by Attorneys General who found that the president can only declare a location a national monument but can’t reduce the size - that takes an act of Congress.

Yoo even notes this before sailing right past it to claim president can do anything.

The Antiquities Act makes it clear that a president can only declare a national monument. They can’t reduce the size, and there’s lawsuits planned including Sierra Club and multiple Native American tribes who oppose this action.

Ken Starr investigation cost

The figures show that Starr’s office, through the end of November 1998, had spent $40,835,000. That includes $27,749,000 in direct expenses from independent counsel appropriations and $13,086,000 in unreimbursed expenses incurred by other government agencies.

In fairness, Starr’s went on a lot longer than Mueller’s has so far.

yunno, I pretty much stopped watching TV regularly in the 80’s, and outside of blockbusters, do not go the cinema very often. I binged a bit on a few series with my last girlfriend on Netflix and Amazon, but generally ignored what was going on in popular film and TV culture.

Still trying to get caught up around here…and I am not doing so well.

I see there is a lot of stuff about Mike Cernovich and his gang of lesser lights working to get Sam Seder kicked out of MSNBC commenting.

I don’t know a lot about Cernovich because he is nothing but a punk and I do not like punks.

But I wonder, how does a guy seen as a leader of the alt-right, White Nationalists or whatever he fashions himself today…have a wife from a background that many of his fellow scum would hold against anyone else?

Where is the purity factor these bozos call for?

I don’t know anything about her, and it is not about her. I only saw her when I clicked on one of his tweets and went to his twitter page and saw her and her child with him in his header image.

I don’t get it. Many of the same fools that think like Mike would hate on her for being in this country. Many that are like Mike would target her and the kid and want them tossed out of this country.

So, I went to his Wiki page to see if I could learn more about her. This is what I found:

She comes from a Persian, secular Muslim background. Cernovich lives outside of Los Angeles, California.[7]

What? It this purposely vague so there is no connection to any country…say a country that is on the Trump immigration ban list, or a country Mike’s gang hates?

The irritating thing is that this should be an open and shut case.

1. If the company sells the product, they should have to sell it to everyone. You bake wedding cakes? You have to sell them to gay people.
2. You don’t have to add anything special to the cake at the direction of the buyers that would violate your beliefs. You can’t be forced to add two grooms to the top of the cake. You can’t be forced to add a rainbow flag. You can’t be forced to write Nazi’s rule.

Think this will be what gets Mueller fired?

Yes, or at least attempts to.

Trump has made it pretty clear that there’s stuff in his personal finances that he doesn’t want investigated, and that doing so would cross a line for him.

thehill.com

However, it’s really not clear if a directive to fire Mueller would be lawful, and/or be free of consequence for the person it was given to. First, apparently Mueller can only lawfully be fired for actual misconduct, not just doing too good a job.

But second, if Mueller is investigating the President, then pretty clearly the President asking someone to block that investigation by firing Mueller would be, by itself, obstruction of justice.

Apparently it would be in Rod Rosenstein’s hands to follow an order to fire Mueller. I’m guessing he’s told other Republicans that he’s not got to fire Mueller without a justifiable reason, which is why other Republican’s - including those who are being investigated by Mueller, are preparing contempt charges against Rosenstein, and the FBI:

Trump has already pushed himself to an obstruction charge. I do believe it is coming, but there may be a whole lot more to ride along with it and Mueller will want to make it stick so he will research and build as strong a case he can.

Firing Rosenstein would add to it. As the case builds and then you fire the guy would be seen as obstruction and nothing else. It’s too late for Donny to do it now.

Couldn’t Trump fire Rosenstein and replace him with some patsy that would fire Mueller?

Theoretically yes.

In practice, it would be a massive shitshow, and possibly would have Mueller (or anyone else) file an injunction against it, as things that could be lawful, can be unlawful if they are to achieve an illegal aim. i.e. if the goal is to achieve an obstruction of justice, then firing Rosenstein should also be illegal.

This is what Trump wants — a conflict that will allow him to suspend our freedoms and eliminate the pesky Mueller investigation.

He remembers that GWB had about a 40% approval rating on Sept 10, and it shot up to 90-something from rally-round-the-flag-effect. He thinks that will happen for him.

He’s not considering, that nobody at the time thought Bush had invited/caused/encouraged 9/11 — even the most virulent anti-Bushies didn’t see it coming, and took months before blaming him even for the incompetence that allowed it to happen and for picking the wrong response after the fact.

Bush got the benefit of the doubt for being the first president it happened to. Trump doesn’t get that. Bush was also just seen as bumbling. Trump’s seen by way too many as trying to destroy democracy.

During an interview on SiriusXM 125, Hannity blasted the Republican Party, saying they never had any intention of repealing and replacing ObamaCare.

“Here’s my view on the Republican Party,” Hannity said to “Breitbart News Tonight” special edition host Stephen Bannon, President Trump’s former White House strategist.

“It is a dead party. They are morally corrupt, they are weak. … They are ineffective, they’re vision-less, and they have no identity,” he said.

Hannity said he doesn’t believe he’s ever changed politically, but he said he thinks the Republican Party left him.

“And I feel it is heartbreaking to me, because so many people trusted them in 2010, 2014 - ‘Give us the House, give us the Senate,’ ” Hannity said.

“Then they get the White House and then they turn on a man that’s advocating the same principles that they have been quoting for years on the campaign trail,” he said.

Still, it’s a classic bit of faux-puritanism.

They’re already complicit and co-conspirators with the orange fascist and the Russkis. Might as well be hanged for a sheep as for a lamb.

Trump is going to incite a hot war in the Middle East to distract from his money crimes. We are so fucked.

Trump and Jared are malicious and stupid; Netanyahu is just malicious. Would he actually be urging the Trump crime syndicate to support this move, knowing the horrendous blowback that will arise? Or is this Trump not realizing that every candidate promises to do this and then retreats because every prior American President actually had knowledgeable staff that recognized this was a bad idea given the Middle East? Would Netanyahu really want a war to protect his precarious position?

Yes, but it is token support at best. $50K - that’ll buy what? A handful of TV spots?

I guess the national GOP reckons they have to look like they’re doing something or they’ll be accused of throwing the race.

Even though the morons who call themselves “Persians” are mostly of Turkic Azeri lineage and aren’t really full-blooded “Persians” (which there is no such thing).

And these people are all about bragging about the grandeurs of their ancient Persian civilization, hence why they say they would prefer calling themselves “Persian” instead of Iranian.

Slate has an article by a woman about how her boss flirted with her and kissed her without asking, and she’s worried that isn’t going to be possible anymore. I think those worries are exaggerated. For one thing, can’t these men find someone to date other than people they can fire?

I wonder if Trump grabbed her. She probably keeps Mike between her and Trump at all times.

and even if they do so, can these men at least do it outside the office in a neutral setting where she is at least free to leave?

re: #357 ObserverArt

How does that work?

“Aryan” is the name of a group of tribes that moved into Northern India a couple of thousand years ago, and the name is still used to describe a language group (Indo-Aryan), a subgroup of Indo-European languages. (“Persian” is an Indo-Iranian language, not too distant from that group.) In their twisted brains, anything you can label “Aryan” is good.

I think — I value my brain cells, so I don’t follow wingnut.

Humidity still showing at 6% here. Winds have died down in Koreatown. My Dyson Cool Link has been going full blast because of the smoke.
