A Big Development in Mueller’s Investigation: Trump’s Deutsche Bank Records Subpoenaed

Politics • Views: 31,316

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Trump’s connections with Russia is not over, as the news breaks that several weeks ago, Mueller issued a subpoena for Trump’s financial records with Deutsche Bank.

Special prosecutor Robert Mueller zeroed in on President Donald Trump’s business dealings with Deutsche Bank AG as his investigation into alleged Russian meddling in U.S. elections widens.

Mueller issued a subpoena to Germany’s largest lender several weeks ago, forcing the bank to submit documents on its relationship with Trump and his family, according to a person briefed on the matter, who asked not to be identified because the action has not been announced.

“Deutsche Bank always cooperates with investigating authorities in all countries,” the lender said in a statement to Bloomberg Tuesday, declining to provide additional information.

Deutsche Bank for months has rebuffed calls by Democratic lawmakers to provide more transparency over the roughly $300 million Trump owed to the bank for his real estate dealings prior to becoming president. Representative Maxine Waters of California and other Democrats have asked whether the bank’s loans to Trump, made years before he ran for president, were in any way connected to Russia. The bank previously rejected those demands, saying sharing client data would be illegal unless it received a formal request to do so. Trump has denied any wrongdoing.

The significant thing about this development is that Deutsche Bank is the only major bank in the world that still does business with the notoriously bankruptcy-prone Trump — and Deutsche Bank is also notorious for being caught several times laundering money for Russian interests.

Wow, that is interesting.

Let’s connect the dots. Why would a bank laundering money for the Russians loan money to a man whose credit rating is worse than an unemployed meth addict?

Actually, it has the chance to be the beginning of the end. But I love that quote.

This was a theme in the latest Fargo series: a company that borrows money around 2008 when loans are hard to come by from a Russian-based bank that later comes back and demands a very high price to pay back the loan.

If there is a banker/finance person in the house, can you offer any legitimate reason why any bank would do business with someone who has defaulted on so many loans in the past?

To say that Trump is a credit risk is the understatement of all time. Hell, even a loanshark standing on the corner of Westchester and Taylor in the Bronx would probably have serious doubts about lending Trump $50.

While all this is going, guess what’s going to suck the air out of these developments:

Yeah, with Trump about to indicate US is moving to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital or move the embassy or other steps, with Mueller’s investigation closing in on Kushner and Trump directly, it’s going to be the National Enquirer’s editor sex scandal that will deflect attention (and it also happens to be run by an ally of Trump, so there’s that).

It’s worse than that. Trump specifically sued Deutsche Bank to avoid repaying a loan. It’s dumb to loan to someone who doesn’t repay other banks’ loans. It something else to loan to someone who tries to not repay you.

When I was in J-school, many years ago (in fact, I was supposed to graduate from UT Austin with a Bachelor of Journalism 35 years ago this month), we all knew the National Enquirer paid INSANE money to its “journalists.” It was $35K, which, compared to the around $10K paid to just starting journalists was very tempting. But working for the Enquirer was also described as working in a plush coffin-horrible working conditions and less than stellar ethics. Probably included some of this as well.

It’s Alabama.

More specifically, it’s the AL GOP who will back anyone with a (R) after their name over anyone else, even if their chosen nominee is a child molester and sex predator.

Because being a Democrat is somehow worse than being a child molester in the minds of these people. How dare anyone consider better health coverage, more protections for workers, and trying to get employees better wages? That’s not what makes the country great. It’s electing millionaires and billionaires to office so that they can get richer and we get the scraps.

That’s just how it was all intended.

re: #77 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Trump hears from Jared that he should move the embassy because reasons, and Trump will respond to that.

There’s been no movement otherwise. There’s been no functional peace process, and Bibi remains under investigation (it’s a race to see who gets indicted first - Bibi or Trump for their separate criminality). Even many Israelis know that this move is likely to result in another Intifada or make it more dangerous for Israel in the short term. There’s no pressing reason to move it, other than to basically say that the US is no longer the “neutral” intermediary between Israel and the Palestinians. Palestinians will see this as all the reason they need not to do anything else except consider conflict because they don’t have a reason to trust the US.

It doesn’t create an opportunity for peace here either.

What’s Jared thinking? That moving the embassy will be met with silence, and everyone moves on as if nothing changed?

He might hope for that - but that’s not how anything works in the real world, and it’s not how national security and foreign policy gets done. You don’t upturn decades of policy on the hope no one notices the change and just accepts a change in 40 year old policy.

This is unlike the Cuba normalization Obama did as well. That was a bilateral move where the US opened basic diplomatic relations, which the US even maintained with the Soviets during the Cold War. The embargo got us nowhere, and Castro remained in power. It was a useless gesture to keep the embargo.

So of course, Trump wants to reverse that too. Because all Trump wants to do is reverse Obama’s legacy around the world and here at home.

Only Democrats and liberals ever do this. No right winger ever congratulates a Democrat for voting for one of their regressive bills, even though it happens all the time.

The idea that we’re going to encourage more Republicans to stop doing insane things by falling all over ourselves to praise them when they make empty gestures like this is stunningly naïve. It achieves nothing but to make liberals look weak and easily hoodwinked.

Jeff Flake has always been pretty horrible but pretending he opposed sanctions on apartheid South Africa while he was a lobbyist for a Namibian uranium mine because they sanctions would hurt black mine workers was even worse than I expected. All he gave a shit about was that the American mine owners he represented would lose access.

Republican Rep. Jeff Flake, who is running for Senate in Arizona, denied this weekend that he had ever supported the Apartheid government in South Africa while a lobbyist for a Namibian uranium mine, but new audio reveals that his denial may not hold water.

In 1987, Flake testified before the Utah State Senate in support of a resolution expressing support for the government of South Africa while racial segregation laws were enforced — largely to support U.S. mining interests in the region. In testimony flagged by a Democratic source, Flake opposed sanctions on the regime, arguing they only worsened the living conditions for black South Africans.

Flake said, “as far as the economic sanctions having a … more direct impact on the black community, I overhear we tend to think of every black South African as a radical stone-throwing protestor who will stop at nothing until the government is overthrown,” Flake said according to a transcript of the his testimony. “There are moderate elements there. There have been a lot of polls taken both ways. Most of them come out with about, that there are more moderates, considered moderate, than there are radicals. Those are funny terms and most of them aren’t moderate, they just don’t care one way or another or they don’t know about the situation. It has had a dramatic impact on the black population, the biggest impact is that the companies pulling out, the American companies pulling out…”

Anyone who thinks this is new for the WSJ editorial page hasn’t been reading them for long. I stopped in 1988 during the Dukakis- Bush campaign when I realized that their editorials and almost all their columnists were liars, deceivers, and completely dishonest; they were Fox News before there was a Fox News; they were Rush Limbaugh before there was a Rush Limbaugh. They were always toxic and evil.

At one time the rest of the paper wasn’t terrible, but I suspect that under Murdoch’s management it has declined significantly.

The leak doesn’t have to come from Mueller’s team. Deutsch Bank is a large organization and has a vested interest in assuring its clients that it resists cooperating with law enforcement and requires court subpoenas before complying. So they could’ve leaked it hoping they’d obfuscated the trail enough to avoid any sanction by the Court.

Alternatively Nunes might have gotten word and leaked it hoping to derail the investigation.

Or Mueller might have let this out to rattle Trump’s tree and see what else falls out.

I doubt that Mueller would’ve bothered to go for these records at this juncture unless he had, at the very least, strong reasons to believe they would give lie to Trump’s claims that he has no ties to Russia.

This is probably why Trump is acting more and more belligerent towards the FBI, he’s starting to look like a wild animal caught in a snare.
