Apparently Robert Mueller is more than just a spectacularly qualified candidate to take Trump behind the woodshed. He’s also a survivor, and he’s flexing some of those muscles right about now.

Everybody is starting to sweat bullets about the possibility of Trump trying to fire Mueller if the heat gets too high on this Trump-Russia thing. This would be a risky move, since it might force the GOP dominated congress to pass a Special Prosecutor law and bring Mueller back, or else face the wrath of an increasingly educated and motivated electorate.

But, Mueller is feathering his nest. NBC news is reporting that they found something odd in Mueller’s plea agreement with Michael Flynn. Not only will Flynn cooperate with the federal investigators, and testify in federal court if necessary, but he also greed to cooperate with applicable state and local authorities, as well as testifying in state court cases if necessary.

Mueller has thrown a gauntlet to Trump. “Go ahead and fire me Herr Twitler, and I’ll just turn over alllll of this juicy shit to the New York Attorney General. You can’t pardon yourself, or your idiot monley spawn out of state convictions.” And what state Attorney General wouldn’t love to have the entire investigative efforts of the FBI to use in a state court case, including a star witness handed to them in a pretty pink wrapper?

Whoa, Time - 65 Million Americans Should Threaten to Not Pay Taxes

The approximately 65 million Democrats who voted for Hillary Clinton should pledge that in the future if a Republican wins the presidency with fewer votes than a Democrat for the third time in our era, we won’t pay taxes to the federal government. No taxation without representation!

Twice in the past 16 years, a Republican candidate who finished second in the popular vote has won the presidency. This year, Donald Trump won the electoral vote with about 46% of the popular vote, while Hillary Clinton received about 48%. If the parties stay this evenly divided, another electoral mishap is more likely than not in the next 20 years.

Most Republicans are quite content with this system. Appeals to fairness have not persuaded them of the need to amend the Constitution to establish direct presidential elections, preferably with a runoff if no one wins 50% of the vote. Nor does the real chance that a Democrat could win the presidency with fewer votes than a Republican alarm them. Even the taunt, “Are you afraid of a direct election? Can’t you win a straight-up vote?” doesn’t faze them. Democrats must, therefore, pester Republicans where it hurts: the pocketbook.

Is signing a pledge to not pay taxes legal? Yes, if no overt act of conspiracy is involved, and the pledge itself is hypothetical. No one knows when or if it would be carried out.

A national movement not to pay federal taxes in the future would put Republicans on notice: they do not have the right to impose a hard-right, second-place presidency on a moderate nation every dozen or so years. If the Republicans won’t help amend the Constitution so that America can resume being a democracy, then Democrats, lacking the representation that supporters of a future popular vote-winner ought to have in the executive branch, should not submit to paying taxes to the federal government.

Hell, I’m in.

I ask how Sharia law is rising in Australia.

“They’re trying to change our holidays… yeah, like Australia Day - which is ridiculous. And I don’t like the fact that they are trying to say their culture is very feminist - their law basically shuns women. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe they don’t. But that’s how I see it”.

I move inside. I try to listen to what people are saying - one supporter asks his friend where all the “beautiful blonde Aryan chicks are”. His name is Carlos, and he is here with his friend Hayden - both are in their 20s, and both work at the same pizza shop.

“He’s for freedom of speech,” Carlos tells me, speaking of Milo. “I’m a bit worried about this country - I feel like I can’t state the wrong opinion or look in the wrong direction without having the wrong intention. I feel like I can’t manspread. I get looks - it’s a bit disconcerting to me.

The writer of this brilliant piece of writing is 19 years old!

It may soon be Pence’s turn in the barrel, so to speak…

Vice President Pence’s aides are anxious that Pence will be summoned for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, CNN reported Tuesday.

Those close to Pence’s office told CNN that since former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and Pence, it will open the door for Mueller to question Pence.

Pence knew that Flynn had contacted Russia but didn’t know the two had discussed Russian sanctions, transition officials told the network. Pence was leading the Trump transition when Flynn called then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak to discuss sanctions implemented against Russia by the U.S.

A person close to Pence told CNN that his aides are “preparing” to be called for an interview with Mueller.

“Chairing the transition would make it possible regardless of who it was,” the person said.

Pence’s office denied that they are preparing for a possible interview with Mueller.

I used to think that. I spent three years in college in Worcester, and I would joke that I probably would have been a Republican in Massachusetts. But these days I don’t think so, and I’m really of the conclusion that a lot of Republicans will vote Republican whereever they go. What keeps the MA governor from being too radical even though they can be Republican is Democrats there cross over.

Russia stole the dirt on Hillary. Stealing private information is a crime — it’s what Nixon’s plumbers were doing. We don’t know yet that the Trump campaign participated in the crime while it was happening (although there are some indications). But in any event, Trump made himself an accessory after the fact by obstructing the investigation — in the same way that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s friends, by throwing away his backpack, made themselves part of the Marathon bombings.

There’s no indication that Steele, or any of the middle men, did anything illegal.

Hell Mueller is a Republican himself. Republicans in Congress are trying to sell their base that Mueller is a DNC/Democratic guy but he’s very independent minded. Well, my mom spent years working for a sister agency of Flynn’s DIA so she knew the rumors about Flynn, a terrible person to work for who rightfully was fired by Obama. And that’s not even pointing these things out: Trump made him one of his key advisers, Trump even had him vetted for VP, and he chose Flynn as his National Security Adviser against Obama’s wishes and I know you can’t prove this but i don’t doubt it was just to say fuck you to Obama.

Going from the combined totals from Fulton and DeKalb Counties, with over 90% in:

Bottoms 42,294
Norwood 40,043

(Norwood lost by just 700 votes in 2009.)

I’d humbly suggest convincing more Texans not to vote for Republicans. It sucks that the seat was lost, but we’ll probably get it back in a year and until then the Senate will only be 33 D to 7 R.

In the Fusion GPS / Steele case the information wasn’t being supplied by a foreign government. In other words it was not an illegal in kind contribution by a foreign source of something that had value. Instead the money flowed the other way, first from the conservative Washington Free Beacon during the GOP primary & later from a DNC affiliated law firm TO Steele FOR legal opposition research. Steele wasn’t giving anything away, he was just providing a standard service at market rates. The fact that Steele provided these for profit services to both sides during this period bolsters the idea that this wasn’t done with ulterior motives.

What the Trump team did by comparison was:

A. an explicit violation of campaign finance law by soliciting and accepting help from a foreign government, help that had real material value that they did not pay for. As far as the law is concerned that’s no different than accepting millions of dollars in illegally laundered campaign funds.

B. arguably part of an ongoing conspiracy to violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act via the laundering of stolen information (Podesta / DNC emails) through a third party (Wikileaks.) This speaks to consciousness of guilt.

If there were more Republicans like Mueller in the party the past 40 years, we wouldn’t have this mess. I genuinely appreciate men like Mueller who dedicate their careers to public service. Mueller is a man who comes from a well to do background who first was decorated in Vietnam and then became a federal prosecutor. Exactly. Atlanta had a Mayoral election between a D and an R and the D is ahead by 2000 votes out of 82,000 cast. That’s a pitiful turnout by the Ds. I don’t know what to do about D outreach to get black and brown people to vote in local, state, and national elections, all I know is that it just isn’t working right now. The “voter repression” meme is real, but it pales in comparison to the real fact that Latino and African American voters don’t turn out in elections.

Immigrant and established East Asian, neo-African, and South Asian communities don’t seem to have this lever-pulling ennui. It’s a puzzlement.

By 759 votes, Bottoms prevails. Norwood loses another agonizingly close race.

Two things made Norwood competitive that you folks aren’t taking into account: Norwood never actually said she was a Republican, claims to have voted for Hillary, and supported some liberal causes (notably same-sex marriage) before many Democrats. Also, Atlanta isn’t as black as it used to be: the black share of the population fell from 61% in 2000 to 54% in 2010, and is probably still falling.

%) Libertarians would be all in on this too (as they want the government essentially eliminated).

ETA: okay, that linked to site is extremely sketchy and click-baity. Go find the NYT report on the same subject. Not only doesn’t it mention Duterte, but the whole point is there’s an actual issue with the vaccine and the government at first wanted to continue using it. If there’s some other occasion where Duterte said something dumb about autism…I dunno, that’s entirely possible, but it’s not in the presented content.

I always thought Barkley’s conservatism or the idea that he is was overblown. I wouldn’t call Sir Charles a liberal but he’s no conservative/wingnut either. I don’t always agree with him but I believe he comes by his positions honestly and thoughtfully But yeah Jay is definitely a Democrat. I don’t get why he’s cheat on Beyonce either. Anyhow, the most interesting African-American Republican I know from history is Jackie Robinson. He supported Nixon over Kennedy with some justification, Nixon did in fact have a good Civil Rights record going into 1960 and Kennedy had been a bit weak on it until his presidency. This all coming from a guy whose Catholic family loved the Kennedys and hated Nixon btw but I’m also a historian :). Anyhow, Jackie was disgusted by the GOP nominating Goldwater in ‘64. He supported Nelson Rockefeller in ‘68 but when Nelson lost to Nixon who by then was using the Southern Strategy, he supported Hubert Humphrey who had one of the best records on Civil Rights in that era.

This is absolutely awful. Fire is terrifying: I recall the two prairie fires we had close (in Chadron and just south of my town). Even with the right equipment they are hard to fight (my village fire brigade was in the rills and canyons around town for a week trying to keep the fires here away from the village).

This looks like it is going to be something like the Fort McMurray fire. It is so frustrating that neither firefighters nor the weather service can do much.

Founding Fathers Didn’t Intend the Constitution to Be Interpreted (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Oh, boy, a conservative where I live (Conservatopia) doesn’t understand much about history or the Constitution.

He wrote in response to a letter written by a liberal regarding the II Amendment. I responded, but since my regional paper has already printed a letter from a liberal this month, they probably won’t print my response.

His letter:

I have to say I am in disagreement with Thomas Gribble and his editorial on Nov. 30.

First of all, I’m not sure where you, Mr. Gribble, got your version of a “militia,” but I can assure you that if more people like you have that frame of mind, it’s not the end of the discussion.

The Second Amendment reads: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Our founders never intended for the second amendment to be “interpreted.” It was meant to be plain. Hence the way it was written back in their day.

The people were not free to own guns under British rule and many states would not have ratified the Constitution had there not been safeguards (Second Amendment being one). Our founders hated standing armies and were very suspicious of an out-of-control federal government.

My response (which I expect they won’t print):

Mr. Boyd Dohse wrote on Dec. 5 that the Founders did not intend the Constitution to be interpreted. That of course ignores the Constitution has a Judicial branch which does exactly that, along with an amendment process that has been used to strike large portions of the Constitution (notably slavery and Native citizenship, women’s right to vote, &c).

Regarding the issue he wrote about, the II Amendment and the DC v Heller Supreme Court decision which (ironically) interpreted the II Amendment, that decision did not strike down all regulations regarding firearms. It struck down banning an entire class of firearms (pistols), while noting that jurisdictions could still ban other classes (machine guns, for example).

As for people “not being able to own firearms” under British rule, that is simply untrue. There was no massive smuggling operation to arm colonials so they could hunt prior to the Revolution.

As for being suspicious of an “out-of-control” government, it was General George Washington who demanded of the Continental Congress people to train a professional army. It was President George Washington who personally led the Army against the Whiskey Rebellion (a revolt against Federal taxes).

After that, it’s hard to predict what the long-term will be like… There is an ebb and flow in history, so I presume by 2030 things my look very different, but right now, I would expect things to get worse, not better.

a) cover the edges of the yard sign in Vasoline mixed with Rit clothing dye (my method for my yard signs)
b) chain the yard sign down (with a stake driven in the ground)

In the 2012 election, the then chairwoman of our village board complained prior to the meeting that her yard sign supporting then-candidate for the Senate Ben Sasse kept getting uprooted and thrown in her back yard.

I noted my sign for Dave Domina (who ran against him) wasn’t being tampered with, and that tampering with signs is a Federal offence. If she could identify who was tampering with her Ben Sasse sign she could press charges.

She said heck, no, it was her son doing it, and her son hated Ben Sasse. Every time he mowed the lawn he would uproot the sign and throw it over the fence to her back yard.

Yesterday I was not sure if Angeles Shooting Ranges still exists as a facility. Yesterday I found out it almost all burned completely out. 49 people temporarily out of work. It’s gone.

We will rebuild. Here is an aerial video I did last spring that shows the place. Ironically they had hired me and my small crew to do a major promotional video. Two actually, now all that stays in the can. Both 95% done. Now I think we will document the rebuild and restart.

Yesterday I was not sure if Angeles Shooting Ranges still exists as a facility. Yesterday I found out it almost all burned completely out. 49 people temporarily out of work. It’s gone.

We will rebuild. Here is an aerial video I did last spring that shows the place. Ironically they had hired me and my small crew to do a major promotional video. Two actually, now all that stays in the can. Both 95% done. Now I think we will document the rebuild and restart.

Things like requiring disclosure of taxes would be a start.

And the EU and Asia are obviously learning that they can’t rely on us to protect them. As an American, I cannot say that’s a bad thing. I’m also the kind of person who hates being the only one who knows something at work. I’m not big into the idea of job security.

Edit: I would like to see the US be more of an equal partner among all of these groups. And I think we need to build these alliances up more to keep China and Russia from becoming the dominant power.

I am more optimistic. SCOTUS could decide this term that gerrymandering is unconstitutional, which will help a lot. Remember, Trump’s election was a fluke; he only won with a pathetic 46% of the vote because Clinton was nearly as unpopular as he was. If the Democrats nominate a candidate with average popularity they should beat Trump easily if he runs again.

I like that. I mean too often people have this impression that Time’s Person of the Year has to be someone they like. She chose us.

We went to a Meet and Greet, put on by Golden State Greyhound Adoptions - a fantastic group, BTW! - and as we were talking to the volunteer, this beautiful brindly girl unobtrusively got up and came over, and before I knew it, I’d been petting her for a minute or two as she leaned against my legs. No jumping up, no licking, she just came over and let us know.

The GSGA doesn’t let adopters pick their dogs, because they’ve found people don’t always choose well, and then dogs come back. But in this case, they agreed with Zeena that we were her family.

There’s an old saying, “Three years a young dog, three years a good dog, three years an old dog. All else is a gift from God.” With Zeena, we missed the first three, but I feel like we got six years a good dog, and as an old dog she was still a delight.

I was born and brought up in that area, and used to drive the 405 a few times a week at the least: what’s amazing is that even after the mumble, mumble years since I lived there, the 405 Freeway remains the only big N-S connector between the West Side of L.A. and the San Fernando Valley for 15-20 miles. Which seems kind of a moot point today, as a friend of mine in L.A. said everyone there has been advised to stay home.

Moore is accused of much worse, and the RNC is financially backing his run for the US Senate. The GOP is defending Moore.

Both Moore and Trump call the accusers liars, plants, or worse. They, and their supporters are smearing the accusers.

I hate health insurance companies sometimes. My mother in laws insurer is trying to get out of having to foot the bill to get an in home oxygen concentrator set up for her.

This woman has diabetes and congestive heart failure and COPD. She could easily die if we can’t get this approved.

I’ve been investigating portable oxygen concentrators for my mother in law. It turns out that for portables, there are $400 machines that can do what the $2,500 ones do but the cheap ones aren’t certified to be prescribed. Just ordered her one of the cheap ones because her insurance is fighting about a new portable one.

I think the prices are artificially inflated from some kind of monopoly situation. Just a quick Google around and I found some in home ones for about $600. Best!

As another old woman, here’s the thing… I have known so many men like Franken. They’re generally playful huggers, kissers, and fanny patters in relaxed social settings. Go too far? Yeah, a little too friendly and close sometimes but harm is never intended, no threat is implied, and most of us women just step away and laugh. I honestly believe that Franken is horrified by this now because no one ever expressed to him that he was doing anything wrong. Women don’t tell them. We just don’t for a myriad of reasons.

As another old woman, here’s the thing… I have known so many men like Franken. They’re generally playful huggers, kissers, and fanny patters in relaxed social settings. Go too far? Yeah, a little too friendly and close sometimes but harm is never intended, no threat is implied, and most of us women just step away and laugh. I honestly believe that Franken is horrified by this now because no one ever expressed to him that he was doing anything wrong. Women don’t tell them. We just don’t for a myriad of reasons.

I believe Franken is not only getting a serious education but that as a result he can be an even greater ally to women that he already is now.

I can see where you’re coming from. I definitely don’t see him as the same as Moore or Trump FWIW. And I hope should he resign or not, he is getting that education and can become a greater ally.

Customers repeatedly reported that the barrel of the stainless steel 10 ML-II muzzleloader exploded, burst, split or cracked, according to thousands of court documents reviewed by The Associated Press.

I am not a big fan of the use of stainless steel in gun barrels. If it was designed to operate using smokeless powder, then you don’t have to soak the barrel in soapy water after use.

Franken should resign at this point simply because it’s the right thing to do now and a larger pattern has been established. Not because this might be the first time a Dem accepting guilt and consequence finally breaches through the GOP-installed double standards we operate under.

I have seen our president* give much worse speeches than this, which is admittedly a low bar.

I think he’s at his worst, from a standpoint of power and influence, when he’s doing these bad teleprompter reads of speeches that were obviously written by someone else. It’s hard to imagine that a mushy, everything-for-everyone speech like this one will make him any new friends, so beyond reinforcing the evangelical base that was already behind him, what good does this do him in the long run?

(And there was enough “Islam is a religion of peace” mush that was written into the speech that maybe the fundies won’t be happy about not getting enough red meat?)

Still a terrible decision, but it could have been handled even worse. Sigh.

If we had a system that didn’t have a blatant double standard, then yeah, maybe preemptive stuff like that might be worth it. But as it is, nothing we do is actually going to stop the GOP from using this against us for the next election cycle or more, show trial or not.

I’m not doubting that. I am just saying the Republicans will somehow make this all about Democrats. I’ve been around long enough watching politics to know that.

By the way. I just set a new personal record for changing from summer hi-perf tires to dedicated winter tires in just over 45 minutes.

That’s counting taking them from the basement out to my garage, the floor jacks and other accessories out too, removing and replacing one side, backing car out to flip to the other side, making sure they are properly tightened with a torque wrench, getting all the hubcaps on the winter wheels and hauling all 4 summers back down to the basement.

All I do now is make sure they are inflated to satisfy my digital tire pressure indicators and I am good to go for the snow. Yay!

That’s most likely a ‘61 Les Paul. After 1960, Gibson changed the body design out of concern for declining sales and to compete with Leo’s Stratocaster. That big plate on the bottom is the ill-considered ‘sideways tremelo.’ The arms had a propensity to snap off, and they eventually replaced it with the Gibson Vibrola. Bad, bad design.

Lester hated it, and demanded they take his name off of it. The ‘SG’ nomenclature was an abbreviation for ‘solid guitar.’

A friend actually has one that I got to play. It was, indeed, a solid guitar.

Actually, a “court” consisting exclusively of Franken’s fellow Democratic Senators would be sufficient: the endgame here ought to be taking just enough of the high ground to sway (perhaps) the Alabama special election, and spotlight Republicans’ hypocrisy/double standards regardless. Franken resigning in the near future will not affect the partisan balance: the Dem Governor would appoint a Franken-replacement, and even though they will have to run next year for the remainder of the term, said replacement will have a year to amass a record: and 2018 may still yet see a “blue wave.

I think the GOP is in a downward spiral, and at the end of the day, with another disgraced Presidency brought down by its own crimes, and its one major legislative achievement being a massively unpopular giveaway to the rich, if they can even pass that, there is going to be massive waves such as we saw in 2006 and 2008 throwing a bunch of the scumbags out of office. Having high moral standards isn’t our weakness; its our strength.

I don’t expect the kangaroo court to be fair.
Wet, slobbery kisses should be left to the province of puppies. And kept off movie screens (ick).
Al Franken has acted like a jerk, and he should have kept his hands off non-consensual fannies.
Dumping Franken for the sake of ‘purity’ won’t win any voters and won’t shut the GOP up any time in the next ten years or more.
But for the sake of sanity and governance, we should insist on the Ethics Investigation anyway.
This is a set-back for the necessary and reasoned discussions of sexual behavior, not a win.
