Bad news from Massachusetts, as it appears that GOoPer Dean Tran has picked up a state senate seat in a special election there. Haven’t found the vote totals yet, but here’s a blurb from the local paper.

:) (Daily Kos link)

Apparently Robert Mueller is more than just a spectacularly qualified candidate to take Trump behind the woodshed. He’s also a survivor, and he’s flexing some of those muscles right about now.

Everybody is starting to sweat bullets about the possibility of Trump trying to fire Mueller if the heat gets too high on this Trump-Russia thing. This would be a risky move, since it might force the GOP dominated congress to pass a Special Prosecutor law and bring Mueller back, or else face the wrath of an increasingly educated and motivated electorate.

But, Mueller is feathering his nest. NBC news is reporting that they found something odd in Mueller’s plea agreement with Michael Flynn. Not only will Flynn cooperate with the federal investigators, and testify in federal court if necessary, but he also greed to cooperate with applicable state and local authorities, as well as testifying in state court cases if necessary.

Mueller has thrown a gauntlet to Trump. “Go ahead and fire me Herr Twitler, and I’ll just turn over alllll of this juicy shit to the New York Attorney General. You can’t pardon yourself, or your idiot monley spawn out of state convictions.” And what state Attorney General wouldn’t love to have the entire investigative efforts of the FBI to use in a state court case, including a star witness handed to them in a pretty pink wrapper?

Whoa, Time - 65 Million Americans Should Threaten to Not Pay Taxes

The approximately 65 million Democrats who voted for Hillary Clinton should pledge that in the future if a Republican wins the presidency with fewer votes than a Democrat for the third time in our era, we won’t pay taxes to the federal government. No taxation without representation!

Twice in the past 16 years, a Republican candidate who finished second in the popular vote has won the presidency. This year, Donald Trump won the electoral vote with about 46% of the popular vote, while Hillary Clinton received about 48%. If the parties stay this evenly divided, another electoral mishap is more likely than not in the next 20 years.

Most Republicans are quite content with this system. Appeals to fairness have not persuaded them of the need to amend the Constitution to establish direct presidential elections, preferably with a runoff if no one wins 50% of the vote. Nor does the real chance that a Democrat could win the presidency with fewer votes than a Republican alarm them. Even the taunt, “Are you afraid of a direct election? Can’t you win a straight-up vote?” doesn’t faze them. Democrats must, therefore, pester Republicans where it hurts: the pocketbook.

Is signing a pledge to not pay taxes legal? Yes, if no overt act of conspiracy is involved, and the pledge itself is hypothetical. No one knows when or if it would be carried out.

A national movement not to pay federal taxes in the future would put Republicans on notice: they do not have the right to impose a hard-right, second-place presidency on a moderate nation every dozen or so years. If the Republicans won’t help amend the Constitution so that America can resume being a democracy, then Democrats, lacking the representation that supporters of a future popular vote-winner ought to have in the executive branch, should not submit to paying taxes to the federal government.

Hell, I’m in.

For anyone who thinks right-wing stupidity is only limited to America and Europe (by way of the UK), here’s some amusement in the wake of a pedophile apologist’s tour in Australia:

I ask how Sharia law is rising in Australia.

“They’re trying to….” she turns to her partner. “What are they trying to do?”

“I don’t really know what Sharia law is,” David replies.

“They’re trying to change our holidays… yeah, like Australia Day - which is ridiculous. And I don’t like the fact that they are trying to say their culture is very feminist - their law basically shuns women. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe they don’t. But that’s how I see it”.

….

I move inside. I try to listen to what people are saying - one supporter asks his friend where all the “beautiful blonde Aryan chicks are”. His name is Carlos, and he is here with his friend Hayden - both are in their 20s, and both work at the same pizza shop.

“He’s for freedom of speech,” Carlos tells me, speaking of Milo. “I’m a bit worried about this country - I feel like I can’t state the wrong opinion or look in the wrong direction without having the wrong intention. I feel like I can’t manspread. I get looks - it’s a bit disconcerting to me.

The writer of this brilliant piece of writing is 19 years old!

I want to ask a question to clarify things. It’s a comparison of the Steele dossier vs. Trump and Co’s asking Russia for dirt on Hillary. Ignore the middle men (which is easy in Trump’s case). Is there a difference between the getting the information? What I’m really trying to find out is when someone says “Yeah, well, Hillary went and got information about Trump” I’m not completely stumped.

It may soon be Pence’s turn in the barrel, so to speak…

Vice President Pence’s aides are anxious that Pence will be summoned for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, CNN reported Tuesday.

Those close to Pence’s office told CNN that since former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and Pence, it will open the door for Mueller to question Pence.

Pence knew that Flynn had contacted Russia but didn’t know the two had discussed Russian sanctions, transition officials told the network. Pence was leading the Trump transition when Flynn called then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak to discuss sanctions implemented against Russia by the U.S.

A person close to Pence told CNN that his aides are “preparing” to be called for an interview with Mueller.

“Chairing the transition would make it possible regardless of who it was,” the person said.

Pence’s office denied that they are preparing for a possible interview with Mueller.

I used to think that. I spent three years in college in Worcester, and I would joke that I probably would have been a Republican in Massachusetts. But these days I don’t think so, and I’m really of the conclusion that a lot of Republicans will vote Republican whereever they go. What keeps the MA governor from being too radical even though they can be Republican is Democrats there cross over.

Russia stole the dirt on Hillary. Stealing private information is a crime — it’s what Nixon’s plumbers were doing. We don’t know yet that the Trump campaign participated in the crime while it was happening (although there are some indications). But in any event, Trump made himself an accessory after the fact by obstructing the investigation — in the same way that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s friends, by throwing away his backpack, made themselves part of the Marathon bombings.

There’s no indication that Steele, or any of the middle men, did anything illegal.

Well, my mom spent years working for a sister agency of Flynn’s DIA so she knew the rumors about Flynn, a terrible person to work for who rightfully was fired by Obama. In the Fusion GPS / Steele case the information wasn’t being supplied by a foreign government. In other words it was not an illegal in kind contribution by a foreign source of something that had value. Instead the money flowed the other way, first from the conservative Washington Free Beacon during the GOP primary & later from a DNC affiliated law firm TO Steele FOR legal opposition research. Steele wasn’t giving anything away, he was just providing a standard service at market rates. The fact that Steele provided these for profit services to both sides during this period bolsters the idea that this wasn’t done with ulterior motives.

What the Trump team did by comparison was:

A. an explicit violation of campaign finance law by soliciting and accepting help from a foreign government, help that had real material value that they did not pay for. As far as the law is concerned that’s no different than accepting millions of dollars in illegally laundered campaign funds.

B. arguably part of an ongoing conspiracy to violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act via the laundering of stolen information (Podesta / DNC emails) through a third party (Wikileaks.) This speaks to consciousness of guilt.

If there were more Republicans like Mueller in the party the past 40 years, we wouldn’t have this mess. I genuinely appreciate men like Mueller who dedicate their careers to public service. Mueller is a man who comes from a well to do background who first was decorated in Vietnam and then became a federal prosecutor. He’s a fine man which makes the right wing smear campaign at him all the more fucked up. He’s the kind of a man a sensible GOP would want to be AG.

82,000 votes in Atlanta? For Mayor? And people wonder why Dems lose in the South. Just pitiful.

That percentage is pretty normal for a large urban area in an odd year election. Boston has about 675K in the city proper and had about 106K votes in the mayoral runoff. Atlanta has 475K and seems to be on target for about 90K votes, which is actually better than what we had here. Of course, both of our candidates were Democrats.

Going back to A. The fact that so many people within the Trump campaign have been caught lying about their contacts with Russia during the campaign and transition also speaks to consciousness of guilt. How many SF-86 revisions has Kushner had to file? He and Jr almost certain have lied to Congressional investigators. We know they lied egregiously in their public statements about not having any contacts with Russia. Why did Flynn, Papadopolous, Manafort & Gates feel the need to lie to the FBI about their Russian contacts? Why did Sessions lie under oath in his confirmation hearing? Why did Pence lie about not knowing about Flynn’s contacts when he clearly had to have by virtue of running the transition team? Why did Trump lie about not having any connections to Russia? It can’t all have been to save face, that makes no sense, the stakes were so high and they all knew better. They lied to cover up their illegal conspiracy against the laws of the United States.

Compare this with the Clinton Campaign, whose law firm kept all receipts of their expenses and payments to Steele, and provided this information to the FEC & congressional oversight committees as part of their standard election filings.

Exactly. Atlanta had a Mayoral election between a D and an R and the D is ahead by 2000 votes out of 82,000 cast. That’s a pitiful turnout by the Ds. I don’t know what to do about D outreach to get black and brown people to vote in local, state, and national elections, all I know is that it just isn’t working right now. The “voter repression” meme is real, but it pales in comparison to the real fact that Latino and African American voters don’t turn out in elections.

Immigrant and established East Asian, neo-African, and South Asian communities don’t seem to have this lever-pulling ennui. It’s a puzzlement.

Schumer advised Trump to declare Jerusalem as Israel’s ‘undevided’ capitol

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) advised President Trump to declare Jerusalem as the “undivided” capital of Israel ahead of Trump’s expected announcement on the matter this week, Schumer told The Weekly Standard.

The White House said Tuesday that Trump will announce that the U.S. will recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, but will delay moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to there.

Trump had suggested in an October interview that he was planning to make a decision regarding the embassy, but wanted to give an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan “a shot” first, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA).

Schumer himself told JTA that he supported the U.S. moving its embassy to Jerusalem, and criticized Trump over his “indecisiveness” on the issue.

An excellent question! I can’t speak for all states, but in Texas, it may also be a social one. A latino friend of mine raised in south Texas says the people he grew up with had priorities that included family, church, sports, BBQ, hunting, family, and church. His succinct comment: “My peeps don’t vote.”

The AJC now shows 100 percent of precincts in for the Atlanta mayoral race and…

Bottoms 46,464
Norwood 45,705

By 759 votes, Bottoms prevails. Norwood loses another agonizingly close race.

Two things made Norwood competitive that you folks aren’t taking into account: Norwood never actually said she was a Republican, claims to have voted for Hillary, and supported some liberal causes (notably same-sex marriage) before many Democrats. Also, Atlanta isn’t as black as it used to be: the black share of the population fell from 61% in 2000 to 54% in 2010, and is probably still falling.

Yes, they could, both on a local and State level, but if it is not built into their culture, if they don’t think it matters on a fundamental personal level, then that is a bitch kitty of a problem to solve to bring them into the clade of annual voters.

A bit of Genius Bonus as back in the bad old days Methodists were some of the few people who would minister to those in prison and people of color without reservation, and were also anti-slavery, both in the US and UK. This didn’t do their faith’s reputation much good among the white majority in many states, hence Hedley tacked them onto his list of scumbags.

Hell, I’m in.

Such a move would break the country. Guess where the cuts would come? (If you guessed social programmes, you get a kewpie doll.)

Moreover, while floating such an idea, there are two other issues:

a) Not everyone pays taxes (as a disabled vet, I am one of Mitt Romney’s famous 47% moochers)
3) If such a theoretical move were to become a reality, then it really is a conspiracy, and whoever promoted it would be tried for promoting non-payment of taxes.
%) Libertarians would be all in on this too (as they want the government essentially eliminated).

A better method would be GOP delenda est.

“Neonnettle” has headed the article with a title and first paragraph about Duterte and anti-vax autism claims that the quotes cited don’t back up, and furthermore there’s no such thing present in the NYT article linked to.

It’s seems there’s a an issue that the producer of a dengue fever vaccine, has called out, and suspending the vaccine program is the response.

ETA: okay, that linked to site is extremely sketchy and click-baity. Go find the NYT report on the same subject. Not only doesn’t it mention Duterte, but the whole point is there’s an actual issue with the vaccine and the government at first wanted to continue using it. If there’s some other occasion where Duterte said something dumb about autism…I dunno, that’s entirely possible, but it’s not in the presented content.

I don’t like Pence at all obviously but low class? This guy. He’s the weird one here. Presidential pets are a time honored tradition.

I can see why Trump would hate pets and have distain for pet owners. Pets are physically and emotionally needy, they require work to train properly and care for. You literally have to deal with their shit and over time they reflect who you are, at least to a degree. You have to at least have some small modicum of empathy to relate to and care for a pet and Trump at his core is a deeply abusive, toxic narcissist. So the idea that any animal could ever possibly enrich his life is anathema to his entire self image which is built on dominating the people around him. The love of a dog or cat would probably just enrage someone like Trump, because there’s no real victory in degrading the animal into a subservient position. From his perspective pets are, at best, zero calorie thralls.

I always thought Barkley’s conservatism or the idea that he is was overblown. I wouldn’t call Sir Charles a liberal but he’s no conservative/wingnut either. I don’t always agree with him but I believe he comes by his positions honestly and thoughtfully But yeah Jay is definitely a Democrat. I don’t get why he’s cheat on Beyonce either. Anyhow, the most interesting African-American Republican I know from history is Jackie Robinson. He supported Nixon over Kennedy with some justification, Nixon did in fact have a good Civil Rights record going into 1960 and Kennedy had been a bit weak on it until his presidency. This all coming from a guy whose Catholic family loved the Kennedys and hated Nixon btw but I’m also a historian :). Anyhow, Jackie was disgusted by the GOP nominating Goldwater in ‘64. He supported Nelson Rockefeller in ‘68 but when Nelson lost to Nixon who by then was using the Southern Strategy, he supported Hubert Humphrey who had one of the best records on Civil Rights in that era.

This is absolutely awful. Fire is terrifying: I recall the two prairie fires we had close (in Chadron and just south of my town). Even with the right equipment they are hard to fight (my village fire brigade was in the rills and canyons around town for a week trying to keep the fires here away from the village).

This looks like it is going to be something like the Fort McMurray fire. It is so frustrating that neither firefighters nor the weather service can do much.

HARRISBURG — Conservative state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe wants everyone to know that he’s heterosexual, has a wife, and doesn’t want to be touched — at least not by a male colleague.

The Republican from Butler County made that clear Tuesday during a meeting of the House committee he chairs.

Mr. Metcalfe’s comments, captured on video, came after the committee’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Matt Bradford of Montgomery County, was trying to make a point about a bill having to do with land use and, for a split second, put his hand on Mr. Metcalfe’s left forearm. The two were seated side by side at a conference table.

Part of the accepted dogma is that gays have to actively recruit and seduce men (especially young boys) to swell their ranks, because nobody could be possibly born that way.

That is the logic behind a lot of anti-gay propaganda laws in many nations, and it is not a coincidence that a derogatory term for gay in many languages is derived from the word for “pederast”.

Founding Fathers Didn’t Intend the Constitution to Be Interpreted (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Oh, boy, a conservative where I live (Conservatopia) doesn’t understand much about history or the Constitution.

He wrote in response to a letter written by a liberal regarding the II Amendment. I responded, but since my regional paper has already printed a letter from a liberal this month, they probably won’t print my response.

His letter:

I have to say I am in disagreement with Thomas Gribble and his editorial on Nov. 30.

First of all, I’m not sure where you, Mr. Gribble, got your version of a “militia,” but I can assure you that if more people like you have that frame of mind, it’s not the end of the discussion.

The Second Amendment reads: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Our founders never intended for the second amendment to be “interpreted.” It was meant to be plain. Hence the way it was written back in their day.

The people were not free to own guns under British rule and many states would not have ratified the Constitution had there not been safeguards (Second Amendment being one). Our founders hated standing armies and were very suspicious of an out-of-control federal government.

My response (which I expect they won’t print):

Mr. Boyd Dohse wrote on Dec. 5 that the Founders did not intend the Constitution to be interpreted. That of course ignores the Constitution has a Judicial branch which does exactly that, along with an amendment process that has been used to strike large portions of the Constitution (notably slavery and Native citizenship, women’s right to vote, &c).

Regarding the issue he wrote about, the II Amendment and the DC v Heller Supreme Court decision which (ironically) interpreted the II Amendment, that decision did not strike down all regulations regarding firearms. It struck down banning an entire class of firearms (pistols), while noting that jurisdictions could still ban other classes (machine guns, for example).

As for people “not being able to own firearms” under British rule, that is simply untrue. There was no massive smuggling operation to arm colonials so they could hunt prior to the Revolution.

As for being suspicious of an “out-of-control” government, it was General George Washington who demanded of the Continental Congress people to train a professional army. It was President George Washington who personally led the Army against the Whiskey Rebellion (a revolt against Federal taxes).

The notion that Mueller is somehow going to save you from Trump strikes me as somewhat naive in light of what we’ve seen so far.

Even if Mueller fully and incontrovertibly exposes Trump for the criminal money laundering Russian puppet that he is, nothing will happen, because of Congress, and the Supreme Court, and the millions of homegrown nazis supporting him. The rule of law, which was always perilously fragile in the US , will not apply to him.

At best, like Mugabe, Trump will be “retired” with honors by your oligarchs and sent back to Mar-a-lago to bask in glory and sink further into dementia, still convinced he was the greatest president ever and worshiped by millions of said nazis; while the rest of the kleptocracy goes on unimpeded. He’ll just have to anoint an heir (Ivanka?) for the 2020 campaign if his mind is already too far gone by then. Or he might swing a second term.

After that, it’s hard to predict what the long-term will be like… There is an ebb and flow in history, so I presume by 2030 things my look very different, but right now, I would expect things to get worse, not better.

There is enough evidence out there without a Mueller investigation: obstruction of justice, conflict of interest, violation of the emoluments clause, etc., but the political will is lacking.

I do not see how that is going to change.

The only good thing I see coming out of this is DT’s tax records being made public. That in itself might not be enough to sink him, but it will take a lot of the wind out of his sails.

I couldn’t agree more. (At least for the short-term.) The rules applying to the US today might be formulated as WWZD — What Would Zimbabwe Do. Does anyone expect Mugabe or his wife to pay for their crimes? No. Is his successor any better? No. End of story.

I definitely agree that the US is probably in for a very politically unstable decade at least. Trump and his nativist supporters won’t give up power gracefully and the sensible, pragmatic center-left will have a hard time competing as long as extreme leftist populists continues to value their own economic purity over defeating the modern robber barons and their weaponized white nationalism. I can see America lurching back and forth reflexively for awhile between various iterative populist reactionary movements, but I’ve kind of given up on predicting much else beyond US society as a whole remaining immune to the learning of long term lessons.

As long as political discourse is carried out in the form of tweets, talking points, Internet memes and media sound bytes there will be no meaningful or nuanced discussion on how to solve the problems we are facing.

We came to look on public education as just another operating expense to be cut to a minimum in order to lower taxes (or increase profits when taken in the economic sense) instead of as an investment in society, the economy and democracy. We are paying the price for that now.

There are several solutions to prevent that sort of thing:

a) cover the edges of the yard sign in Vasoline mixed with Rit clothing dye (my method for my yard signs)
b) chain the yard sign down (with a stake driven in the ground)
c) put a small sign on the top reminding theft is a violation of the X Commandments for alleged Christians

213
Anymouse 🌹  Dec 6, 2017 • 2:27:42am

In the 2012 election, the then chairwoman of our village board complained prior to the meeting that her yard sign supporting then-candidate for the Senate Ben Sasse kept getting uprooted and thrown in her back yard.

I noted my sign for Dave Domina (who ran against him) wasn’t being tampered with, and that tampering with signs is a Federal offence. If she could identify who was tampering with her Ben Sasse sign she could press charges.

She said heck, no, it was her son doing it, and her son hated Ben Sasse. Every time he mowed the lawn he would uproot the sign and throw it over the fence to her back yard.

remember yesterday’s poll on the unpopularity of the tax bill?

electoral-vote.com

To make it worse, few people understand what is in it (and that includes the members of Congress who voted for it). When the final bill is announced and people begin to understand its consequences for them, it is only going to get less popular.

and this IS an administration of firsts:

FiveThirtyEight has looked up the popularity of past tax bills and noted that this tax-cut bill is less popular than previous tax increases. The approve/disapprove for the 1993 Bill Clinton tax increase scored 34%/44% and the George H.W. Bush tax hike of 1990 was 41%/52%. For a tax cut to be less popular than a tax increase is unprecedented. No tax cut in the past 35 years has been underwater, and certainly not under water by 20 points.

that’s some special talent right there

It is designed so that enough middle-income people will get enough short-term tax relief that they continue to vote GOP

it is designed to create such a budget deficit that the GOP can then insist that it is necessary to cut spending even more on everything that is not military spending or corporate welfare.

Luckily, lots of people aren’t waiting for Mueller. That’s why Democrats are finally running for local offices, especially women. In a special election in Georgia yesterday, Democrats broke the Republican supermajority in the state Senate.

I completely agree with you — but do not share your optimism re the power of the ballot box, at least the way it’s been interfered with and corrupted in the US. Nine years ago when Obama got elected, I thought a trend had been stopped, but overall I don’t see it today. Obama may well be a blip in a line that runs from Reagan to Trump.

It took a major economic disaster to get us to Obama, and I am afraid that the economic/political/military disasters that DT causes will totally wreck the system’s ability to self-correct.

Trump did the one thing that Obama couldn’t: He woke Democrats to the fact that they can’t wait for someone else to fix things. Too many Democrats thought things were OK and they would stay that way, and, if not, the president could stop them. That has changed, finally. Democrats are finally running for local offices in places they haven’t in a long time.

Now, I’m not saying everything will be rosy, or that we’ll recover tomorrow. And I’m definitely not saying we’ll be the same country we were before. But that, in part, is a good thing. The US has dealt with corruption before. We will just have to adjust to the reality that corrupt morons can get elected to office under our current system, and try to minimize it. Things like requiring disclosure of taxes would be a start.

And the EU and Asia are obviously learning that they can’t rely on us to protect them. As an American, I cannot say that’s a bad thing. I’m also the kind of person who hates being the only one who knows something at work. I’m not big into the idea of job security.

Edit: I would like to see the US be more of an equal partner among all of these groups. And I think we need to build these alliances up more to keep China and Russia from becoming the dominant power.

I am more optimistic. SCOTUS could decide this term that gerrymandering is unconstitutional, which will help a lot. Remember, Trump’s election was a fluke; he only won with a pathetic 46% of the vote because Clinton was nearly as unpopular as he was. If the Democrats nominate a candidate with average popularity they should beat Trump easily if he runs again.

Here’s a challenge for everyone: Try to come up with a working system where no single entity is in charge. There’s a reason the world tends to favor a superpower or dominant empire; it’s the same reason the US went from a confederacy to a strong central government: At certain times, an organization requires a single head to make decisions. How can we build a system such that the groups are loosely connected, but when decisions have to be made, they can be made quickly, and no minor subset of the group can thwart the decision?

Diana Butler Bass is a progressive religious scholar. She has some insight into how Evangelical supporters of Trump see moving the embassy to Jerusalem. She doesn’t mention this, but it’s worth noting this action would definitely shore up Evangelicals’ support of Trump.

The way to defeat this is:
1. Don’t play their game because they’re the experts.
2. Don’t appease them because they can’t be appeased.
3. Do the right thing because it’s the right thing.
4. Give them enough rope to shoot themselves in the foot.

2&3 apply to both MSNBC handling Reid (don’t fire her) and Franken (wait until the investigation is done). It also applies to why Conyers needs to resign.

I definitely take VB’s words on this issue seriously since she’s got family there and she rightfully worries for them when politicians whether they be Bibi or Trump play cynical games like this. I can tell you why that is. Back during the 1960s, the Mormon church had an unwritten policy that only a few young men in each ward were to be allowed to serve missions and thus, get an exemption from military service. Romney was one of the lucky young men; many others got drafted into the Vietnam meat grinder and some never came home.

One of my friends, Mormon in Utah, well, his parents were (unusually for Utah) antiwar and they were going to ship him off to relatives in Canada to avoid the draft. He, however, had come up with a solution on his own. He was going to literally shoot himself in the foot. Thankfully for all concerned, the war started winding down and the draft was discontinued. But he was dead serious about the shooting himself in the foot part. He was not going to Vietnam.

re: #336 mmmirele

I can tell you why that is. Back during the 1960s, the Mormon church had an unwritten policy that only a few young men in each ward were to be allowed to serve missions and thus, get an exemption from military service. Romney was one of the lucky young men; many others got drafted into the Vietnam meat grinder and never came home.

I have respect for people like your friend since he genuinely thought Vietnam was a bad idea. Mitt famously was protesting in favor of the draft/war and then got a deferrment. I just think that’s low. I think Mitt more or less took advantage of his family name even though he favored the draft and war to get out of it. It sucks but Bannon’s words about Romney aren’t wrong. Of course, Bannon also supported President Bonespur too.

We went to a Meet and Greet, put on by Golden State Greyhound Adoptions - a fantastic group, BTW! - and as we were talking to the volunteer, this beautiful brindly girl unobtrusively got up and came over, and before I knew it, I’d been petting her for a minute or two as she leaned against my legs. No jumping up, no licking, she just came over and let us know.

The GSGA doesn’t let adopters pick their dogs, because they’ve found people don’t always choose well, and then dogs come back. But in this case, they agreed with Zeena that we were her family.

There’s an old saying, “Three years a young dog, three years a good dog, three years an old dog. All else is a gift from God.” With Zeena, we missed the first three, but I feel like we got six years a good dog, and as an old dog she was still a delight.

I was born and brought up in that area, and used to drive the 405 a few times a week at the least: what’s amazing is that even after the mumble, mumble years since I lived there, the 405 Freeway remains the only big N-S connector between the West Side of L.A. and the San Fernando Valley for 15-20 miles. Which seems kind of a moot point today, as a friend of mine in L.A. said everyone there has been advised to stay home.

So, let’s get this straight. Women come forward against Franken and we believe them and Democrats start calling on Franken to step down - resign from the US Senate.

Trump has multiple credible accusers claiming that Trump did far worse than what Franken is accused of, but no one on the GOP side is demanding he step aside and resign. They’re defending Trump.

Moore is accused of much worse, and the RNC is financially backing his run for the US Senate. The GOP is defending Moore.

Both Moore and Trump call the accusers liars, plants, or worse. They, and their supporters are smearing the accusers.

But yeah, let’s roast Franken while Moore gets elected to Senate where an “investigation” will occur that will end up taking months all while Moore cast approving votes on the GOP’s extremist agenda.

I’ve been investigating portable oxygen concentrators for my mother in law. It turns out that for portables, there are $400 machines that can do what the $2,500 ones do but the cheap ones aren’t certified to be prescribed. Just ordered her one of the cheap ones because her insurance is fighting about a new portable one.

I think the prices are artificially inflated from some kind of monopoly situation. Just a quick Google around and I found some in home ones for about $600. Best!

Trump’s not only putting Israelis at risk of violence, but US citizens around the world, because terrorists will consider this yet another reason to attack US institutions, facilities, and citizens overseas.

There’s a reason the State Department issued new travel warnings.

The Painful History of a Confederate Monument Tells Itself

The stated goal of the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville this year was to oppose the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee. In the wake of the events that erupted, filmmaker Sierra Pettengill closely followed the debate surrounding the legacy of Confederate monuments. “I was struck by the way the word ‘history’ was blankly lobbed as a defense of the monuments,” Pettengill told The Atlantic. “Take Trump’s reaction, for one: ‘They’re trying to take away our history.’ My instinct was, ‘Okay, then: Let’s look at the history.’”

Franken should resign. That much is undeniable at this point.

So when is the same going to be asked of literally every GOP pol with the same brand of scandal? When is Dem calls for contrition, conciliation, and actual consequence not going to be treated as proof of party-wide guilt, while persistent DARVO means inoculation of blame for the GOP? When is the standard going to prevent Moores rather than protect them?

Yes, I know the answer is probably ‘never’. But it’s a fucking question that needs to be asked of the media at this point, because fuck all.

I think we are going to see a lot of GOP politicians told to retire by voters next November. The GOP’s support for Trump and Moore is going to help Democrats a lot with energized women voters and women candidates for office.

re: #402 lawhawk

There is still hope that Jones will pull it out Tuesday. Don’t give up on him yet.

Sometimes we have to make due with what we have albeit in an imperfect form. We can’t continue to fight this war with one hand tied behind our back at all times. Go on the offensive.

If I was Franken I would put out a statement that he’ll resign as soon as every single Republican politician on a national level resigns over accusations that are even worse. Put the story back to the Republicans elected a serial sexual predator as President. They are about to elect a serial child molester to Senate. But while it does, when there’s even a fraction of a chance that there could be another Senate vote on the conference-committee version of the tax bill, practical politics dictates that we don’t leave a Democratic seat vacant for even a moment.

If the Republicans don’t give a rat’s ass about the morals of the person sitting in their seat, so long as that person is a guaranteed yes vote, we have to play the same game they’re playing. Or else we are guaranteed to lose. Every time.

Yeah, it’s an incestuous little world in DC where everyone knows everyone, and the same faces appear over and over.

In this case, we’ve got Trump defense lawyers claiming that cases should be punted because he doesn’t have the time to respond (just ignore all the rounds of golf, flights to Mar a Lago or Bedminster).

It just happens that the same lawyer had demanded the Clinton testify in the Paula Jones case while he was still in office.

Attorneys are supposed to push their clients cases to be zealous representatives. That’s their job, but the hypocrisy here is just too rich to ignore. Conway set the precedent by getting Clinton to testify. Now, he’s hoping the court ignores that precedent to get Trump out of an abuse case of his own.

Savage Arms is suffering blowback from possibly defective muzzleloaders that were designed to withstand the use of smokeless powder after several have exploded.

It was the opening day of deer hunting season, and Ronald Hansen says he loaded his rifle the same way he had countless times before, aimed at a target and fired a shot.

This time, the gun barrel exploded, knocking the farmer from Hampton, Iowa, backward, severely damaging his right hand and ear and burning his face.Unknown to Hansen, the manufacturer of the rifle that injured him in 2014 had received other complaints of explosions and injuries over the prior decade. Customers repeatedly reported that the barrel of the stainless steel 10 ML-II muzzleloader exploded, burst, split or cracked, according to thousands of court documents reviewed by The Associated Press.

I am not a big fan of the use of stainless steel in gun barrels. If it was designed to operate using smokeless powder, then you don’t have to soak the barrel in soapy water after use.

Savage Arms is suffering blowback from possibly defective muzzleloaders that were designed to withstand the use of smokeless powder after several have exploded.

Ummm, even disregarding the apparently unironic use of the term “blowback” here, one has to wonder exactly what - other than a little bad press - Savage Arms is worried about? IIRC, thanks to some well-NRA-lobbied legislation a while back, aren’t firearms manufacturers exempt from the usual consumer-safety/product-liability laws ?

That’s only true if Democrats vote them out of office. Republicans aren’t going to do it. They like their power too much.

Which means that the election is not going to be decided because of this issue.

There are lots of independent voters as well, and I believe this issue can energize the democratic leaning ones to vote and discourage the GOP leaning ones to stay home.

More than likely, those charges would have come out after the fact as well, and Franken would still be used to attack Dems as a whole, much like they’ll probably use him still even months and years after he’s stepped down. The point is acting to blunt off attacks by the GOP with preemptive contrition never works. Never. The GOP, and their lickspittles in the media, simply take contrition as proof of further guilt and use it as a bludgeon anyway.

Franken should resign at this point simply because it’s the right thing to do now and a larger pattern has been established. Not because this might be the first time a Dem accepting guilt and consequence finally breaches through the GOP-installed double standards we operate under.

I have seen our president* give much worse speeches than this, which is admittedly a low bar.

I think he’s at his worst, from a standpoint of power and influence, when he’s doing these bad teleprompter reads of speeches that were obviously written by someone else. It’s hard to imagine that a mushy, everything-for-everyone speech like this one will make him any new friends, so beyond reinforcing the evangelical base that was already behind him, what good does this do him in the long run?

(And there was enough “Islam is a religion of peace” mush that was written into the speech that maybe the fundies won’t be happy about not getting enough red meat?)

Still a terrible decision, but it could have been handled even worse. Sigh.

The point is, show trial or not, GOP has already made this a kangaroo court. Look at the continued bludgeoning of ‘But Her Emails’, Bengazhi, the Loretta Lynch/Bill Clinton meeting, ACORN for god’s sake, etc., etc. No amount of contrition has stopped them from using any bit of Dem malfeasance, real or hypothetical, as a rhetorical and political bludgeon to great effect.

If we had a system that didn’t have a blatant double standard, then yeah, maybe preemptive stuff like that might be worth it. But as it is, nothing we do is actually going to stop the GOP from using this against us for the next election cycle or more, show trial or not.

That’s counting taking them from the basement out to my garage, the floor jacks and other accessories out too, removing and replacing one side, backing car out to flip to the other side, making sure they are properly tightened with a torque wrench, getting all the hubcaps on the winter wheels and hauling all 4 summers back down to the basement.

All I do now is make sure they are inflated to satisfy my digital tire pressure indicators and I am good to go for the snow. Yay!

That’s most likely a ‘61 Les Paul. After 1960, Gibson changed the body design out of concern for declining sales and to compete with Leo’s Stratocaster. That big plate on the bottom is the ill-considered ‘sideways tremelo.’ The arms had a propensity to snap off, and they eventually replaced it with the Gibson Vibrola. Bad, bad design.

Lester hated it, and demanded they take his name off of it. The ‘SG’ nomenclature was an abbreviation for ‘solid guitar.’

Actually, a “court” consisting exclusively of Franken’s fellow Democratic Senators would be sufficient: the endgame here ought to be taking just enough of the high ground to sway (perhaps) the Alabama special election, and spotlight Republicans’ hypocrisy/double standards regardless. Franken resigning in the near future will not affect the partisan balance: the Dem Governor would appoint a Franken-replacement, and even though they will have to run next year for the remainder of the term, said replacement will have a year to amass a record: and 2018 may still yet see a “blue wave.

See how easy that is. Sarah Hucklebumble Sanders already got that ball rolling…and it was accepted.

re: #563 Hecuba’s daughter

A discussion last night on MSNBC said that it would take years to implement this policy. But, as you said, saying one thing and doing the opposite is Trump’s trademark.

There’s already a US consulate in Jerusalem. How long does it take to change a sign?

re: #497 Belafon

Democrats should do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do, but, politically, there will be very little come of this. Republicans - hell, Moore - will attempt to paint the Democrats as the party of sexual aggressors, and Republican women will buy it. It will be used by Republicans as a justification to vote for far worse Republicans. Democrats will agree that he should be gone, but it’s already baked into their calculus. It’s not going to suddenly make them say “Hey, that was enough for me.”

Punting Franken without the Ethics Investigation isn’t the right thing to do.
And no, it won’t work, and I don’t kid myself it will suddenly inspire a lot of female Independents to vote for the ‘righteous’ Dems. That’s a (usually male) fantasy.

We’ve already had this discussion, Bernie. Most of the Trump supporters are not feeling economic anxiety. It’s entirely race based. But you probably know that, because you seem to use the word “economic” to mean white just like Republicans.

Some us here were saying this from day one. We were savaged for the effort.

This could already be behind us if our advice had been taken.

Savaged?

Come on Skip, you come off as a bit of a tough guy, if that was savaged you don’t know what savaged is.

Wait, what?!? Does that mean that Trump named Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, but other than that, nothing changes? Who died and made Trump the King of the World where he gets to make decisions for other countries?

To be fair Israel has long claimed Jerusalem as their capital, he isn’t making a decision for them. He is just saying the US now recognizes Jerusalem as their capital.

As a Democratic woman voter I am more offended by the calls for Franken’s resignation without investigation or due process. If they won’t fight for one of their own they won’t fight for us.

Stole this for my emails to Senators Klobuchar and Bennet.
And they have to go and pull this crap while we’re in the middle of fighting the damn tax bill and Net Neutrality and CHIP and keeping the damn government lights on?
This really has my knickers in a twist.

Even the GOP will have a hard time attacking a Senator who’s gone for doing things they still support their people doing.

Skip, you okay???

You do realize that 95% of the time you would say just the opposite and go with something like “Republicans will attack Franken anyway while they ram Moore through and ignore the Trump allegations.”

I fail to see how open mouth slobbery wet kisses would be welcomed by anyone with whom one is not already in a consensual intimate relationship.

I’ve been known to get whacked on the nose for giving slobbery kisses to one whom I’ve been in a consensual relationship for more than 25 years….

And there it is.

Franken is admitted. Trump/Moore…nope.

And do I expect a GOP kangaroo court to give Franken a fair shake. Nope.

But I would go with it anyway because there are enough people in this country that are starting to learn how this is working out and a kangaroo court would be seen as just that…like another Benghazi and Email scandal.

But let’s all run away from the 25% of this country that are wingers, forget the 10% that voted for Trump and probably regret it and can be taught a lesson and not work to get the other 20% of the Democrats that never vote probably because they are confused by it all and wonder why Democrats are so wimpy.

re: #449 HappyWarrior

You know what’s sick? If Jones or any Democrat had Moore’s past, the Republican Party would be using it left and right to attack the MORALITY of all liberals, democrats, adn left of center people. But the RNC is okay with this. Fuck them. I want the Republican Party to be in taters forever.

I think the GOP is in a downward spiral, and at the end of the day, with another disgraced Presidency brought down by its own crimes, and its one major legislative achievement being a massively unpopular giveaway to the rich, if they can even pass that, there is going to be massive waves such as we saw in 2006 and 2008 throwing a bunch of the scumbags out of office. Having high moral standards isn’t our weakness; its our strength.

I agree.
I don’t expect the kangaroo court to be fair.
Wet, slobbery kisses should be left to the province of puppies. And kept off movie screens (ick).
Al Franken has acted like a jerk, and he should have kept his hands off non-consensual fannies.
Dumping Franken for the sake of ‘purity’ won’t win any voters and won’t shut the GOP up any time in the next ten years or more.
But for the sake of sanity and governance, we should insist on the Ethics Investigation anyway.
This is a set-back for the necessary and reasoned discussions of sexual behavior, not a win.
