There is an article on Vox which reflects my view on the Democrats need to take sexual harassment charges against fellow Democrats seriously. I know many of you disagree with this take, but I think it makes a good point that if the Democratic Party is going to harness the energy of women’s political activism for change, it has to reflect that change in itself.

My town has one store and they know we are atheists. “Just go somewhere else” would mean sixteen miles away, where those two stores also know we are atheists. “Just go somewhere else” from those two stores means 120-mile round trip shopping trips.

I’m safe for now, but we had several fires break out in our area last year. The biggest fires are still a good distance away and unless a new one starts nearby I’ll be fine. Berkeley is next to Oakland & San Francisco, over 300 miles northwest of here .

Constitution Meant to Be Interpreted (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)
To the Editor:
Mr. Boyd Dohse wrote on Dec. 5 that the Founders did not intend the Constitution to be interpreted. That of course ignores the Constitution has a Judicial Branch, which does exactly that, along with an amendment process that has been used to strike large portions of the Constitution (notably slavery and Native citizenship, women’s right to vote, etc.).
Regarding the issue he wrote about, the Second Amendment and the DC vs. Heller Supreme Court decision, which (ironically) interpreted the Second Amendment, that decision did not strike down all regulations regarding firearms. It struck down banning an entire class of firearms (pistols), while noting that jurisdictions could still ban other classes (machine guns, for example).
As for people “not being able to own firearms” under British rule, that is simply untrue. There was no massive smuggling operation to arm colonials so they could hunt prior to the Revolution.
So, I am browsing Amazon Prime the other day, and I decide to put on Escape from L.A.
It had been a while since I had seen it, but the POTUS in that movie is like a combination of Mike Pence and Roy Moore. In that scenario, I think I’d rather Escape TO L.A. rather than from it.

Tucson offers the best of both world: in winter you can see the snow up on the mountains, even smell it on the breeze, but you don’t have to shovel it and the daytime temps can still get up into the 70’s.

The weak points in the Bitcoin system are the end users. If the user does not protect his assets, hackers will find a way to steal them, either by brute force or phishing attacks. And once the Bitcoin is gone, there is no getting it back.
Exchanges are also weak points, because as Willie Sutton once said, that’s where the money is.

Yup, cryptocurrencies are especially prone to pump-and-dump schemes, or forks, which lately have been sketchy attempts to “improve” Bitcoin by siphoning money from easy marks into the creators’ pockets.
OTOH, my investments in them have proved quite lucrative. I don’t chase every single project with dollar signs in my eyes. I try to find solid projects with a professional team of developers who seem to know what they’re doing.

A blockchain is the foundation of Bitcoin or any of its derivatives. It’s an encrypted, decentralized ledger of every transaction on the network. Each block is akin to an old-fashioned bound book of accounts, and is linked chronologically to the blocks behind and ahead of it.
So, presumably we could find the Bitcoin addresses containing the stolen Mt Gox or Nicehash funds, but would have no idea who owns the addresses or even where they might physically be.
Other blockchains, like the ones supporting Monero and Zcash, go one step further and obscure the addresses and/or the amounts held at those addresses.

The Economist did an article on the premise of blockchains and how they are supposed to work. Traditional financial institutions (the ones that deal in real money) and governments (the ones that print real money) are looking into the tool as a means of securing their own lists.
The idea behind blockchains is they make lists (in the case of who owns Bitcoins, the list of Bitcoin accounts) independent of listkeepers (who can be corrupted).
The drawback is blockchains can be corrupted as well, though with more difficulty (you can’t threaten to break a computer’s legs or kidnap its children).

This isn’t a call to become tolerant of awful behavior. It is a call for understanding that Democrats honored the blue slip, and Republicans didn’t. Democrats had hearings over the Affordable Care Act; Republicans had none over the tax bill. Democrats decry predators in the media; Republicans give them their own networks. And what do Democrats have to show for it? There is something almost eerily self-regarding in the notion that the only thing that matters is what Democrats do, without considering what the systemic consequences are for everyone….

After all, no one who calls themselves law and order in a just world would ever back someone like Roy Moore who’s been accused by multiple credible women with contemporanous evidence of Moore sexually harassing or assaulting the women when they were in their teens (and as young as 14).
Beyond that, no one calling themselves law and order should support a judge who was twice removed from the state judiciary because he refused to follow the law. Moore’s actions are the very kind of activism that the GOP supposedly hates (but the reality is that they hate judicial activism and judges who rule against them - not activism per se). They don’t mind when their extremist judges rule in their favor, and they hope that stacking the judiciary with extremists will shape the caselaw for decades to come - thanks to the obstructionism by McConnell and the craven GOP.

OT: So I went and saw Michigan Wunderkinder Greta Van Fleet at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night. I woke up early this morning, dusted off my rock critic hat and posted a quasi-review on Facebook. Here it is, for any interested parties. Hidden behind the button in case you’re not.
So, Greta Van Fleet. I’m somewhat…torn. Conflicted, if you will.
Like pretty much every other rock fan in America, I’ve been delightedly watching the band’s YouTube videos for the better part of a year, and I went to last night’s show with a shit ton of expectation. For the most part, GVF delivered. They’re handsome lads who can really play, and they worked hard to give the crowd what they came for. Lead singer Josh Kiszka has kind of a clumsy/dorky stage presence which I expect will smooth itself out over time, but overall the band showed an awful lot of poise for a group of 20-somethings who have been thrown into the deep end of the expectations pool by their label.
The Kiszka brothers have glommed onto something huge - an age-diverse crowd with a common love for Led Zeppelin. They’ve written two EPs worth of songs using some of Zep’s biggest tunes as a template, and musically they did not disappoint. Josh has got a set of pipes that simply do not quit - a few times I thought he’d hit the top of his range, only to hear him expand his top yet again. Guitarist Jake has got Pagey’s tone (and many of his stage mannerisms) nailed cold, and bassist Sam may be the band’s secret weapon, filling the JPJ role of multi-instrumentalist extremely well. And drummer Danny Wagner channels Bonzo, minus a little of the swing and swagger (in fairness, who COULD do that?) and hopefully without the vices and violence.
The songs were slick, well-written, cleverly arranged, with a lot of that stop-and-go that Zep was so good at. The only time they fell a little short was when they covered Cactus’ version of ‘Evil,’ and I’m not sure why - well-played, VERY well-sung, tight as hell. But it felt a little…calculated.
And there’s the rub. And that’s why I left the show a little less sold than when I walked in.
Maybe their label is pushing them to play up the similarities to the band that is obviously their guiding light. Maybe seeing the show in total context gave a clearer picture than watching single song performances on YouTube. Maybe the little niggling details - Josh’s faux Brit accent at the beginning of the set, the dedication of a song to Tom Petty that felt a little more aimed at getting a crowd response than honoring the man - just put me off a little.
But I get it. They’re in the bigs now and there are expectations to be met. But I said to my drummer afterward that it reminded me of those Les Paul copies made with a 3D printer - they might look right, all the parts are there, but they still just seem a little off. That’s not Greta Van Fleet’s fault. They could not have picked a more iconic act to pattern themselves after. They aimed high. And damned if they didn’t get closer than any of the other bands who have tried to fill the LZ void since Bonzo exited the stage.
I still enjoyed them quite a lot - 20 somethings with guitars and attitude is definitely good for this world. And once GVF outgrow their influences - which is inevitable - they’ll be a band that will be remembered and loved for rocking as hard as they can.
But if they announce that they’re going to represent each band member with a symbol and paint those symbols on the side of a private jet, I might get a little mad.

Democrats just lost an election in 2016 against a historically unpopular candidate because their candidate was disliked nearly as much. The political environment is favorable for Democrats in 2018, but perhaps the easiest way that Democrats could blow their opportunity is if voters conclude that as bad as Republicans are, Democrats are no better. With Democrats coming around to a tougher stance on Franken and Conyers while Republicans equivocate on Moore and restore funding to his campaign, they’ll be able to draw a clearer distinction for voters.

With a high likelihood the seat is lost. Franken won by the narrowest imaginable combination of votes and reviews. That was against Googly-eyed Michele Bachmann, IIRC.

I just signed up through AEP Energy for my electric supplier the other day. They gave me the option of selecting their “Green-e® Energy Certified 100% wind-generated renewable energy certificates and Generation Service.
I know all electricity no matter how it is generated is dumped into the power grid so I asked why they ask if I want that option? They said by picking that option I was sending a message to the industry and to the government about future energy use and development.
I said “sign me up!”
