Seth Abramson should have been permanently discredited when he advocated lying to promote Bernie Sanders. (Yes, he really did, but he called it “building an alternative meta-narrative” or some bullshit like that.) Instead, he’s been getting very popular on Twitter by appealing to liberal confirmation bias, just like Cernovich and Posobiec appeal to conservative confirmation bias.

Every time I see somebody post one of his tweets here at LGF, I die inside just a little bit.

Embracing the way of the lie is a sure fire way for Democrats and the left to lose. It will split and disillusion the lefty base, and people who want real liars will vote Republican anyway.

Since the president tends to have a competent doctor in his general vicinity much of the time, I’m sure someone will notice if there is an actual medical issue.

Second time he’s signed that waiver. It’s all for show. It’ll take years to get a new Embassy built, and it’ll cost a shitpot of simoleons, which Congress isn’t going to authorize anyway because the spooks have no intention of leaving the Tel Aviv complex, which has one of the most intricate and sophisticated comm centers outside of the US.

So he has needlessly put people in danger’s path as a result of the potential reaction to this decision, and it’s all vapor. Typical. Too bad there are no adults running the country right now, eh?

There is an article on Vox which reflects my view on the Democrats need to take sexual harassment charges against fellow Democrats seriously. I know many of you disagree with this take, but I think it makes a good point that if the Democratic Party is going to harness the energy of women’s political activism for change, it has to reflect that change in itself.

It’s easy to see this as an act of shortsighted martyrdom: losing power by adhering to your ideals, winning a moral victory while losing the war. But that’s not actually how it works.

The Democratic Party isn’t just attracted to the idea of “the resistance” out of idealism. It’s attracted because that ideal — and the backlash against serial harassers in the post-Weinstein era (to the extent that the two are even different from each other to begin with) — reflects a new energy among certain groups of people (especially middle-aged suburban women of all races) that can be channeled into Democratic politics. Democrats have the power to help solidify the norm against harassment by acting on it — and they have the opportunity to show the resistance that their actions can generate real change, thus encouraging more activism down the line.

Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal but he’s Secretary of the goddamned Interior and it further reinforces the fact that Trump’s nominees were only nominated to destroy their agencies from the inside. Two days ago I posted at the closed atheism forum I own at Yahoo (on behalf of an international social group) the issue coming before the Supreme Court about the Colorado cake shop.

I poked holes in the arguments about “religious freedom” noting you do not have a constitutional right to a business, and if you give religious rights to businesses then stand by for a new version of Jim Crow.

The flying monkey squad of Libertarians (large L) came in to claim “property rights of business owners” and such twaddle. “Well, if they don’t like it, they can just go to another business.”

I pointed out (futilely when arguing with Libertarians, though my wife gets it) that the whole country isn’t an urban area with tons of choices. My town has one store and they know we are atheists. “Just go somewhere else” would mean sixteen miles away, where those two stores also know we are atheists. “Just go somewhere else” from those two stores means 120-mile round trip shopping trips.

Well, I’m not sure what a “registered atheist” is. (:: They are members of the social group, and the overwhelming majority of the members of the particular Yahoo group are atheists.

As for “naming one,” it seems in their case the issue is similar to “I don’t care unless it affects me.” Two days later they are still arguing about that. Probably time to throw in a new topic (the fellow who filed to run against Rowan County KY Clerk Kim Davis).

Video

The video is nice, but the looped music is kinda meh. Isn’t there something in the Public Domain that you can use? I’m thinking like Holst’s The Planets. (Jupiter? Mars?)

Also, shooting ranges are notoriously filthy with lead levels in soils, especially older ones like this facility. Has the client been proactive in recovering as much lead from the soil as is reasonably possible? That would be a great selling point in Cali. With the downtime they are now going to have, it would be an opportunity for them to screen the soils for bullets and shot.

Anyway, good video. I’m off for the rack. Night all, and please, SoCal Lizards, be careful and be safe. Tomorrow is going to be hell in a bucket.

That really is the folly of “Just shop somewhere else.” I really feel as long as someone isn’t being intentionally disruptive, I think a business is wrong to ban them and I do believe sexuality and lack of religion should be protected under the law.

Didn’t mean to be offensive, it was just shorthand for “they were members of a closed atheism forum so I figured they identified as such.” And the naming was meant to refer to other collections of humans — Protestants, librarians, Scrabble enthusiasts — every single one of which, in my experience, includes a jerk or two (at least). Even the peace groups I’ve been involved in tend to include the odd passive-aggressive self-nominated candidate for sainthood. Tonight in Warhammer…

Nork Deddog

“Da Sergeant Major asked me what my job was an’ I said it was to, uh, do what I was told. He said I was a genius and gave me another medal. I likes da Imperial Guard!”
— Nork Deddog, Ogryn Bodyguard

Though unquestioningly loyal, Nork is no leader. Throughout his long career, he has guarded officers with remarkable military acumen, tactical genius and an innate understanding of the Astra Militarum war machine. Unfortunately, none of this has ever rubbed off on the hulking Ogryn. His singular duty demands all of his attention, and has done for the entirety of his illustrious service. In those rare instances when the subject of his protection is grievously wounded and unable to maintain their command, allied soldiers may appeal to Nork for orders — after all, he is typically the most decorated and experienced Veteran in a battalion. Such requests, however, are in vain. In Nork’s simple mind, he still has but one duty, and he will continue to protect the fallen officer until he is told to do otherwise. Fortunately, having an unconscious officer draped across his shoulder does little to hamper Nork’s ability to butcher the enemy.

Marriage Equality Law Passes Australia’s Parliament in Landslide Vote (goes to The Guardian)

Australia, which changed the law in 2004 to say that marriage is only between a man and a woman, now joins 24 countries which recognise same-sex marriage.

The lower house passed marriage equality with almost all members of the governing Liberal-National Coalition joining Labor, the Greens, and crossbench MPs in a free vote to pass the bill which cleared the Senate last week without amendment.

The only no votes were Coalition MPs Russell Broadbent, Keith Pitt, David Littleproud and independent MP Bob Katter.

Tony Smith declared the vote carried, since fewer than five MPs opposed it.

I’m safe for now, but we had several fires break out in our area last year. The biggest fires are still a good distance away and unless a new one starts nearby I’ll be fine. Berkeley is next to Oakland & San Francisco, over 300 miles northwest of here .

I think it’s pretty clear that Pence fantasizes about ridding himself of Trump, who is obviously very sick in the head and seems to be spiraling downward mentally. Pence’s problem is figuring out how to unseat his boss while keeping his fingerprints off the dagger or else earning the wrath of Trump’s atavistic base.

Furthermore Pence is much more of a far right Christian with a firm religious ideology, than a protean populist / nationalist like Trump. Worse for him is that he’s much less of a showman so I doubt he’ll be able to fake the carnival atmosphere and maintain the spectacle that has endeared Trump to the GOP’s low functioning base. So even if he can take over as President he’ll have is work cut out for him trying to distance himself from the treasonous criminality of the campaign while also earning an equivalent place in the heart of racist America.

The same amount of people live in Los Angeles as these seven rural, mostly white states. But they have 14 Senators while Los Angeles shares two with the rest of California. Our government was not designed to be modern multiracial democracy where everyone has an equal say.

Recall George Carlin’s quote: “Think about how stupid the average person is and then remember that half of them are stupider than that”.

Combine that with a political system that gives a disproportionate share of the Senate and Electoral College vote to the stupid half and you have Modern America in a nutshell.

Surprise. My regional newspaper printed my letter. If I get run out of my home with pitchforks and torches, is there someone who can put us up? /s

Constitution Meant to Be Interpreted (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

To the Editor:

Mr. Boyd Dohse wrote on Dec. 5 that the Founders did not intend the Constitution to be interpreted. That of course ignores the Constitution has a Judicial Branch, which does exactly that, along with an amendment process that has been used to strike large portions of the Constitution (notably slavery and Native citizenship, women’s right to vote, etc.).

Regarding the issue he wrote about, the Second Amendment and the DC vs. Heller Supreme Court decision, which (ironically) interpreted the Second Amendment, that decision did not strike down all regulations regarding firearms. It struck down banning an entire class of firearms (pistols), while noting that jurisdictions could still ban other classes (machine guns, for example).

As for people “not being able to own firearms” under British rule, that is simply untrue. There was no massive smuggling operation to arm colonials so they could hunt prior to the Revolution.

So, I am browsing Amazon Prime the other day, and I decide to put on Escape from L.A.

It had been a while since I had seen it, but the POTUS in that movie is like a combination of Mike Pence and Roy Moore. In that scenario, I think I’d rather Escape TO L.A. rather than from it.

In the earlier installment, Escape from New York, I always thought the POTUS looked a little like Steve Ballmer.

Here they print a liberal’s letter once a month, whether they need to or not.

I was suprised because the original letter in the thread that prompted my response was also from a liberal (arguing the II Amendment is not some absolute right that can have no restriction).

The letter I responded to distorted the purpose of the courts and the amendment process of the Constitution.

Go to the alarm system (on the south side of town). Alarm is on, saying the water tower is half a foot over the overflow. Great, that means we have water flowing in the streets.

Check the system settings, seems okay … wait a few minutes and the numbers drop by about a foot.

Tucson offers the best of both world: in winter you can see the snow up on the mountains, even smell it on the breeze, but you don’t have to shovel it and the daytime temps can still get up into the 70’s.

Nicehash, a service for people who want to mine Bitcoin, was hacked to the tune of $60+ million a couple of days ago. Their security was lacking, and the thieves just extracted all the Bitcoin they could.

The weak points in the Bitcoin system are the end users. If the user does not protect his assets, hackers will find a way to steal them, either by brute force or phishing attacks. And once the Bitcoin is gone, there is no getting it back.

Exchanges are also weak points, because as Willie Sutton once said, that’s where the money is.

Yup, cryptocurrencies are especially prone to pump-and-dump schemes, or forks, which lately have been sketchy attempts to “improve” Bitcoin by siphoning money from easy marks into the creators’ pockets.

OTOH, my investments in them have proved quite lucrative. I don’t chase every single project with dollar signs in my eyes. I try to find solid projects with a professional team of developers who seem to know what they’re doing.

They hate the concept of a Federal Reserve and are cheerleaders for any currency that a government cannot control, be it gold or bit-based.

And small-l libertarians love the idea that it is (allegedly) untraceable, while at the same time its very untraceability makes it incredibly easy to steal.

Nicehash’s Website has been down two days now (for “maintenance”).

Funny, all my Federal Reserve notes are untraceable as well. In my real wallet. I can also use them everywhere, unlike Bitcoin, and if the government and Federal Reserve suddenly tank, we have more to worry about than whether fiat currency is a problem.

An awful lot of libertarian money-making schemes (seasteading, the Galt’s Gulch development in Chile, &c) are nothing more than scams. When said libertarians lose their money (and they always lose their money), they go whinge to the big bad government they hate to get their money back.

How much has been recovered from the MtGox Bitcoin theft? Oh right, almost nothing.

They don’t seem to learn very quickly, it’s almost like a religion.

A blockchain is the foundation of Bitcoin or any of its derivatives. It’s an encrypted, decentralized ledger of every transaction on the network. Each block is akin to an old-fashioned bound book of accounts, and is linked chronologically to the blocks behind and ahead of it.

So, presumably we could find the Bitcoin addresses containing the stolen Mt Gox or Nicehash funds, but would have no idea who owns the addresses or even where they might physically be.

Other blockchains, like the ones supporting Monero and Zcash, go one step further and obscure the addresses and/or the amounts held at those addresses.

OTOH if someone happened to carelessly use the same Bitcoin address in such a way that identifies him or her, say on a blog or a marketplace website, law enforcement could eventually find the thief with old fashioned gumshoe detective work.

276
Anymouse 🌹  Dec 7, 2017 • 4:03:09am

The Economist did an article on the premise of blockchains and how they are supposed to work. Traditional financial institutions (the ones that deal in real money) and governments (the ones that print real money) are looking into the tool as a means of securing their own lists.

economist.com

The idea behind blockchains is they make lists (in the case of who owns Bitcoins, the list of Bitcoin accounts) independent of listkeepers (who can be corrupted).

The drawback is blockchains can be corrupted as well, though with more difficulty (you can’t threaten to break a computer’s legs or kidnap its children).

More at the link:

Now imagine a parallel universe in which lists have declared independence: they maintain themselves. This, broadly, is the promise of the “blockchain”, the system which underlies bitcoin, a digital currency, and similar “distributed-ledger” technologies. If blockchains take over, as fans are sure they will, what are the implications of the trust business migrating into the ether?

That was how the FBI got Silk Road. If you’re going to run an on-line marketplace for one stop shopping of drugs and weapons of war, you need to have a stable address.

In fact, you don’t need to. You can change your receiving address anytime you want.. Since each address is a long alphanumeric string, there are billions of possible addresses, so each user can have as many as he wants. The Silk Road guy was either very cocky or very careless.

Law enforcement can link Bitcoin addresses to IP addresses, too. So, if someone is running a Silk Road-like operation, it’s going to generate a lot of IP traffic, including those traffic on the ports used by Bitcoin apps.

Ultimately though, if someone wanted to buy something illegal over the Internet, they still need to get it from a real physical address. Bitcoins themselves pretty much can’t be used anywhere; you need to change them to actual money to use them in the regular marketplace.

I’m not sure exactly how the FBI figured out who the folks running Silk Road were; I imagine they have more than one method. (There is also nothing to prevent the NSA or FBI from maintaining a blockchain list either.)

Quite true. And exchanging large sums of Bitcoin into national currency might attract unwanted attention. That’s why the Silk Road guy had millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin stashed on his computer (or wherever). As for the FBI, they employ very smart people. Trump’s would-be private security jackboots are pikers in comparison.

A more recent article from The Economist (1 June 2017) on the technology behind the blockchain, and why governments are interested in that technology (aside from breaking up criminal activity):

economist.com

While the blockchain originally sought a foothold in financial services, and digital currencies attracted early attention from investors, now interest in using the technology in the public sector is growing. Brian Forde, a blockchain expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, argues that governments will drive its adoption—an ironic twist for something that began as a libertarian counter model to centralised authority. Backers say it can be used for land registries, identity-management systems, health-care records and even elections.

IMF warns Chinese economy resembles the US economy just before the 2008 recession.

theguardian.com

“The system’s increasing complexity has sown financial stability risks,” the IMF’s assessment said. “Credit growth has outpaced GDP growth, leading to a large credit overhang. The credit-to-GDP ratio is now about 25% above the long-term trend, very high by international standards and consistent with a high probability of financial distress.

“As a result, corporate debt has reached 165% of GDP, and household debt, while still low, has risen by 15 percentage points of GDP over the past five years and is increasingly linked to asset-price speculation. The buildup of credit in traditional sectors has gone hand-in-hand with a slowdown of productivity growth and pressures on asset quality.”

FWIW, the Politburo knows all this, probably, but getting such a huge economy to bend to their will is not easy, even with central planning. The People’s Bank of China (their Fed) has been trying mightily to staunch capital flight every way it can, but it’s a question of too little, too late.

OTOH, the experts have been predicting a collapse of the Chinese economy ever since I arrived in 2008, and it has yet to happen. So, who knows?

Hunan TV has put a new twist in filming Chinese classics — use child actors. It turns out the kids act better than most of China’s adult actors, who are often described as wooden.

Hunan TV is the most creative and “edgy” of the provincial TV networks, and its programming is usually much better than the state-sponsored CCTV. It specializes in taking foreign TV series and China-fying them.

Dahlia Lithwick writes:

….Al Franken, many argue, should now resign. He should resign immediately because there are credible accusers (another emerged Wednesday), and because the behavior alleged is sufficiently abhorrent that there is simply no basis to defend him. In this parade of unilateral disarmament, Trump stays, Conyers goes, Moore stays, Franken goes.

Is this the principled solution? By every metric I can think of, it’s correct. But it’s also wrong. It’s wrong because we no longer inhabit a closed ethical system, in which morality and norm preservation are their own rewards. We live in a broken and corroded system in which unilateral disarmament is going to destroy the very things we want to preserve.

To see the double standard in action, watch Mike Huckabee making the case that Roy Moore should be welcomed into the Senate because Franken has stayed. Then keep watching and realize that in the next breath, he adds that Moore has “denied the charges against him vehemently and categorically” so they must be false. Franken and Conyers are deployed by the right to say Moore should stay, and then they are dismissed as suckers for crediting their accusers.

Sexual predation is bad and grotesque and disqualifying for national office and positions of power. Stipulated. Victim-shaming and claiming that “the people should decide” is contemptible avoidance of responsibility. But the question that remains is whether the analysis stops right there. I, too, would like to live in a world where the debate begins and ends with that proposition. But I don’t think any of us live in that world anymore. And this may not be the moment in which to try to resurrect it….

This isn’t a call to become tolerant of awful behavior. It is a call for understanding that Democrats honored the blue slip, and Republicans didn’t. Democrats had hearings over the Affordable Care Act; Republicans had none over the tax bill. Democrats decry predators in the media; Republicans give them their own networks. And what do Democrats have to show for it? There is something almost eerily self-regarding in the notion that the only thing that matters is what Democrats do, without considering what the systemic consequences are for everyone….

I’m torn. I hate this world we’re living in right now.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. The right wing agitprop gibbons are busy as usual, whether it’s Fox, the incessant stream of hypocritical right wingers who show up on the show to gaslight and bloviate, or are tweeting away incessantly.

Take Tomi Lahren, who like Trump constantly claims that protests against racial discrimination and police brutality are an attack against the flag, the nation, or the president (or all of the above).

It’s a steady stream of insanity, and it’s intended to wear down those who oppose all this craziness.

That’s why we have to resist and fight. We have to show that we stand for something good and righteous.

When Trump talks of being for law and order, he’s really talking about enabling bigots and misogynists and whites to do crimes, while attacking blacks, minorities, Muslims, and women. After all, no one who calls themselves law and order in a just world would ever back someone like Roy Moore who’s been accused by multiple credible women with contemporanous evidence of Moore sexually harassing or assaulting the women when they were in their teens (and as young as 14).

Beyond that, no one calling themselves law and order should support a judge who was twice removed from the state judiciary because he refused to follow the law. Moore’s actions are the very kind of activism that the GOP supposedly hates (but the reality is that they hate judicial activism and judges who rule against them - not activism per se). They don’t mind when their extremist judges rule in their favor, and they hope that stacking the judiciary with extremists will shape the caselaw for decades to come - thanks to the obstructionism by McConnell and the craven GOP.

Former Aides Say Trump Consoled Himself with Ice Cream After Throwing a Tantrum During Campaign (Today in toddlerhood, goes to Yahoo)

Computer is running slower than molasses in the winter. Needs a restart. I’m going to hit the rack anyway, so catch y’all later.

From that article:

“With Manafort’s arrival, the meeting went from theater of the absurd to a scene out of The Godfather,” the authors recall.

According to Lewandowski and Bossie, Trump exploded at the mere sight of Manafort. “You think I’m a baby, Paul?” Trump reportedly screamed, as Giuliani and Bannon tried, unsuccessfully, to calm him down.

“Am I a baby, Paul? You think you’re so f—ing smart! Like you’re a genius! Well, you suck on TV!” Trump reportedly shouted.

“By the time the boss finished, Manafort looked like a crushed blue beer can,” the authors say. “Even Bannon felt sorry for him.”

And…

Trump’s temper tantrums and love of comfort food are recurring themes in the book.

One of his McDonald’s dinner orders consisted of “two Big Macs, two Fillet-O-Fish, and a chocolate malted” — and amounted to 2,530 calories.

“On Trump Force One there were four major food groups: McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza and Diet Coke,” the authors write.

Ugh.

I was wondering, do you happen to know if the repeal of the estate tax in the GOP bill means that the yearly gift tax non-spouse per person per recipient gift tax exemption limit will also go away? I think it kind of has to since right now individual gifts in excess of the yearly $15K limit can be applied against the lifetime estate exemption of the giver, but since there won’t be a lifetime estate tax exemption limit after the bill becomes law then hypothetically the consequence is the gift tax goes away too.

The GOP is good at baffling with BS, and then there are shit stirrers like Mensch and Abramson who are good at capitalizing on confirmation bias. I’ve blocked Mensch and tuned out Abramson.

Fact is, if you want to follow what’s going on with the investigation, better to look to people like Preet Bharara who actually knows what he’s talking about than Mensch who’s bull shitting legal mumbo jumbo and claiming secret indictments and criminal charges against Trump are already filed when that’s not how the process works.

Bharara’s much more cautious when it comes to stuff like the Flynn guilty plea - noting that Mueller may have gotten the plea that he did because that’s what he’s able to prove at the present, or that Mueller’s keeping his powder dry for other charges down the road - or handing them off to state prosecutors that are beyond the pardon power reach of Trump. I think the latter’s probably correct, but it’s a combination that Mensch and other folks clamoring for impeachment don’t want to hear.

It just takes time to develop cases - especially ones as complicated as this.

The democratic base can most certainly tell, and many of them share the same disdain for MSM double-standards as the rest of us. GOPers responded to truthful media coverage about how horrid they are by creating their own propaganda ecosystem, and thanks to their rabid threats, cowed much of the MSM into submission (either that, or willful sabotage by rightwing nutjob creeps like Andy Lack who pretend to run a liberal network while actually trying to subvert it)

Again, just because the MSM is against them doesn’t mean Dems have to roll over and accept it - they can go directly to their base via social media (“you won’t hear the bothsiderist media covering this, but…”)

At the very least, they shouldn’t say things that come across as kowtowing to or being stupidly naive about GOPer evil (e.g. Chuck Schumer’s “we wanted so badly to be bipartisan” lament, or - far worse - wavering about defending DREAMers)

And the rest of us also have a role to play - why do you think MSNBC is reinstating Sam Seder? Public pressure, that’s how. And the same pressure needs to be brought against the MSM in other respects when they engage in stupid, dangerous, willful ignorance. They need to be reminded again and again that the GOPer base has its cult media already and the only thing propping up the MSM is sane people.

makeitstop  Dec 7, 2017 • 8:15:55am

OT: So I went and saw Michigan Wunderkinder Greta Van Fleet at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night. I woke up early this morning, dusted off my rock critic hat and posted a quasi-review on Facebook. Here it is, for any interested parties. Hidden behind the button in case you’re not.

So, Greta Van Fleet. I’m somewhat…torn. Conflicted, if you will.

Like pretty much every other rock fan in America, I’ve been delightedly watching the band’s YouTube videos for the better part of a year, and I went to last night’s show with a shit ton of expectation. For the most part, GVF delivered. They’re handsome lads who can really play, and they worked hard to give the crowd what they came for. Lead singer Josh Kiszka has kind of a clumsy/dorky stage presence which I expect will smooth itself out over time, but overall the band showed an awful lot of poise for a group of 20-somethings who have been thrown into the deep end of the expectations pool by their label.

The Kiszka brothers have glommed onto something huge - an age-diverse crowd with a common love for Led Zeppelin. They’ve written two EPs worth of songs using some of Zep’s biggest tunes as a template, and musically they did not disappoint. Josh has got a set of pipes that simply do not quit - a few times I thought he’d hit the top of his range, only to hear him expand his top yet again. Guitarist Jake has got Pagey’s tone (and many of his stage mannerisms) nailed cold, and bassist Sam may be the band’s secret weapon, filling the JPJ role of multi-instrumentalist extremely well. And drummer Danny Wagner channels Bonzo, minus a little of the swing and swagger (in fairness, who COULD do that?) and hopefully without the vices and violence.

The songs were slick, well-written, cleverly arranged, with a lot of that stop-and-go that Zep was so good at. The only time they fell a little short was when they covered Cactus’ version of ‘Evil,’ and I’m not sure why - well-played, VERY well-sung, tight as hell. But it felt a little…calculated.

And there’s the rub. And that’s why I left the show a little less sold than when I walked in.

Maybe their label is pushing them to play up the similarities to the band that is obviously their guiding light. Maybe seeing the show in total context gave a clearer picture than watching single song performances on YouTube. Maybe the little niggling details - Josh’s faux Brit accent at the beginning of the set, the dedication of a song to Tom Petty that felt a little more aimed at getting a crowd response than honoring the man - just put me off a little.

But I get it. They’re in the bigs now and there are expectations to be met. But I said to my drummer afterward that it reminded me of those Les Paul copies made with a 3D printer - they might look right, all the parts are there, but they still just seem a little off. That’s not Greta Van Fleet’s fault. They could not have picked a more iconic act to pattern themselves after. They aimed high. And damned if they didn’t get closer than any of the other bands who have tried to fill the LZ void since Bonzo exited the stage.

I still enjoyed them quite a lot - 20 somethings with guitars and attitude is definitely good for this world. And once GVF outgrow their influences - which is inevitable - they’ll be a band that will be remembered and loved for rocking as hard as they can.

But if they announce that they’re going to represent each band member with a symbol and paint those symbols on the side of a private jet, I might get a little mad.

By every metric I can think of, it’s correct…

I’m torn. I hate this world we’re living in right now.

re: #460 MsJ

In the mid-1990s, Scott opened a payday-loan store and gave his brothers jobs. Lending money to people who don’t have any is surprisingly profitable. In states where such stores are legal, such as Missouri, they’re more common than McDonald’s franchises. But in the 15 states where such stores are against the law, there are millions of desperate people willing to pay for fast cash and no one to give it to them. Scott pioneered what he thought was a clever legal loophole that would give him access to that market: He created websites that were owned on paper by an American Indian tribe, which could claim sovereign immunity from regulators. Those sites charged as much as $150 interest on a two-week, $500 loan—an annualized interest rate of about 700 percent.

Well, we can all be glad the GOP is out to sink the “out of control” Consumer Financial Protection Board, so these fine companies and operators won’t be regulated.

To paraphrase the familiar saying, too many are mistaking what is popular for what is right. It’s suddenly popular to demand his resignation, but it’s not the right thing to do because it deprives him (and us) of the due process to which he is entitled. From Fivethirtyeight article on the benefits to the Democrats of setting a higher moral standard than the GOP.

Maintaining the moral high ground isn’t always easy. It means you have to hold your party to a higher standard than the other party. It means you sometimes have to make real trade-offs. But it can also pay political dividends and mitigate political risks. Democrats just lost an election in 2016 against a historically unpopular candidate because their candidate was disliked nearly as much. The political environment is favorable for Democrats in 2018, but perhaps the easiest way that Democrats could blow their opportunity is if voters conclude that as bad as Republicans are, Democrats are no better. With Democrats coming around to a tougher stance on Franken and Conyers while Republicans equivocate on Moore and restore funding to his campaign, they’ll be able to draw a clearer distinction for voters.

Yes. We know the CIA is untrustworthy, and that’s even WITH government oversight.

This is a proposal to create an entirely separate apparatus that answers to nobody but Trump. And Trump is not exactly famous for being very ethical himself. So take all the problems with the CIA that we already have, and make them worse, and THAT is what they’re proposing.

The Mau-Mau came in ‘53, all we had was lost.
In our old colonial home,
We drank our bitters while the empire fell.

Something prophetic there, rather than reminiscent.
I slightly rearranged the stanza for my own purposes

If Franken wants to watch a parade of women describe how he forced himself on them on national tv, he certainly has the option to announce today he is sticking it out. I don’t think he will though.

That would mean their giving up their anonymity. Works for me.

re: #487 Targetpractice

Nate needs to stick to statistics, because when he tries to wax morally, he tends to ignore that people don’t act as the numbers say the should. Having Franken face an ethics committee investigation would still be a more serious step than the GOP is prepared to take with Moore or Trump. Resignation should not be the only option, especially not when we get almost daily reminders of how hard we got ratfucked last year.

Again, there is the dichotomy between what is Morally Right and what is Politically Right, but the GOP have painted American politics into such a corner that they can do no political wrong, or at least suffer no consequences from it.

I hate bullies as it is, but this dumbass really pisses me off. Amazing what he’s been able to get away with for half a century.

They apparently all by into the myth that he is rich and powerful. So, they think they can get something from him if they hang and take the abuse.

I think many, like a Lewandowski, would have nothing else going on that would bring them the attention they are getting if not taking the abuse and being a Trumper.

I heard that the person he selects may only be a holding place. They are considering an open special election or something and that would invite Republicans.

I’m sure this will all work out for the best.

I’m at work so I haven’t read through any of the comments yet. I just found out that Franken is going to resign.

I’ve already said my share about why I hate this (cannibalism sucks) , but I just want to add that it won’t take an hour before the only-perfection progressives to start howling about who Gov. Dayton picks as his replacement. I kind of wishfully hope that Dayton picks Walter Mondale just to piss off the right.

As a NASA fanboy, I’ll never forgive him but I’d welcome him back for this purpose.

I think someone above said the rules are the replacement serves until a special election to be held next year at the midterms, and then another election in 2020 when the seat is up.

It did from the beginning. And stupid Senate Democrats short-circuited his right to a full investigation.

Sacrificed a good Senator and possible innocent man for some dubious political benefit of the “moral high ground”.

They could have let the process play out , but now they have signaled they will not stand up for their own. Who is next?

What we know about the deadly Aztec High School shooting

New Mexico State police said two students are dead after a shooter opened fire at Aztec High School Thursday morning. They add the shooter is also dead.

Officials with the Navajo Nation add that 15 others were injured.

So, it’s a mass shooting.

Here’s the thing about Trump’s coming war in the Middle East that really gets under my skin. It’s not the current troops he’s putting in danger, though that bothers me too. It’s all the 13, 14 and 15 year olds I see that will be cannon fodder before this is over. Hell. Most of today’s troops were in fucking diapers on 9/11. Time moves so fast it’s hard to keep up.

From Fivethirtyeight article on the benefits to the Democrats of setting a higher moral standard than the GOP.

Nate is not God. He stated, with citation of a Qpoll, that voters care about about sexual harassment allegations. Really?

Trump
Moore

Where is the outrage over Blake Farenthold?

Also, what could hurt the Dems is if it comes out later that this was all or mostly a set up against Franken. Do you think the hordes will praise them then?

I think it will paint them as politically correct, weak kneed, cowards.

It won’t so much paint them as such as reinforce that perception among voters. The claim is that this will help us among women voters, but how many Dem voters are going to see the cowardly way that Franken was forced to resign and decide that it’s not worth supporting the party? Why vote for a candidate when a handful of “anonymous” allegations is enough to end their career?

With a high likelihood the seat is lost. Franken won by the narrowest imaginable combination of votes and reviews. That was against Googly-eyed Michele Bachmann, IIRC.

I just signed up through AEP Energy for my electric supplier the other day. They gave me the option of selecting their “Green-e® Energy Certified 100% wind-generated renewable energy certificates and Generation Service.

I know all electricity no matter how it is generated is dumped into the power grid so I asked why they ask if I want that option? They said by picking that option I was sending a message to the industry and to the government about future energy use and development.

I said “sign me up!”

Yes, I use Excel Energy’s Windsource program for the same reason.
