Asking people to be surrogates is awfully crass, but considering who the GOP has in the House (Farenthold, who isn’t going anywhere) and who they’re trying to elect (Moore), my irresponsibly-speculating brain says it seems it would be much worse.

Considering Speaker Ryan asked him to go …

On the other hand, I can see the GOP trying to use this resignation as an attempt to regain some moral high ground after Senator Franken resigned.

Sanitation worker treated like garbage over Middle Eastern DNA (NYDN)

When a city sanitation employee wanted to learn about his roots, what he really discovered was a nasty pile of prejudice from co-workers, he said.

Michael Femia alleges that once he mentioned he thought he might have some Middle Eastern heritage in his background, colleagues at his Staten Island garage turned on him.

“Terrorist,” “Taliban,” “ISIS,” “Osama” and “Habib” were just some of the names hurled at Femia, according to his Brooklyn federal lawsuit filed Tuesday. It didn’t stop there — he said he was getting wrongly written up by superiors for “alleged performance issues” as payback for complaining about his mistreatment.

This is some excellent material….

First came Tim Gionet, the former BuzzFeed social media strategist who goes by “Baked Alaska” on Twitter, whom Yiannopoulos pitched to Fleuette as a tour manager in late May. Gionet accompanied Yiannopoulos to Florida after the June 2016 Pulse nightclub killings in Orlando. The two planned a press conference outside a mosque attended by the shooter, Omar Mateen. (“Brilliant,” Bannon emailed. “Btw they are ALL ‘factories of hate.’”) But after some impertinent tweets and back talk from Gionet, Fleuette became Yiannopoulos’s managerial confidante.

I suspect Gionet will wind up over at that cesspool tout suite…

Nate Silver noting the polling in Alabama is close (within the margin of error). That means Jones could have a narrow win, or Moore could have a blowout.

He notes the same happened with Ralph Northam in Virginia (he was up by 3, he won by 9).

fivethirtyeight.com

He also notes the margin of error in Senate polling since 1998 (in normal elections) is 13 points. In a special election that is probably worse.

Also figuring in is how many people would not want to admit they are voting for an alleged child molester, versus how many say “to heck with this” and choose to stay home and not vote (thus benefiting Jones).

Dave Weigel (who is not a pollster) notes the following to make it interesting:

Lithwick is dead right. There is no commonly accepted Moral High Ground left to occupy anymore, and to pretend one exists is to live in a masturbatory fantasyland. It’s like lining yourself up behind Miss Manners in a political debate against Machiavelli. Until the Democrats are willing to think asymmetrically about the very real political danger posed by the president* and his party, the danger will grow until it becomes uncontrollable, and that point is coming very soon, I fear. By the time the Democrats admit to themselves that their political opposition has moved so far beyond shame that it can’t even see Richard Nixon any more, the damage wrought to our political institutions may be beyond repair.

Saw your comment and thought I’d log back in to mention Susan Collins accepts emails from outside the state. At least she did for the healthcare debate. I imagine the way the politics is going for her right now, she is probably still interested in hearing from all over.

I emailed contacted her the other day once it was clear that Mitch was going to renege on his deal with her. I said it was sad she got conned by the cons in her own party. I told her only fools do that and now she is looking foolish. I closed by saying this country needs to reject all current Republicans hopefully to force the G.O.P. to get its act together. Signed myself as disgusted with all of them and you (Susan Collins).

So, everyone…jump in. Even if they reject them they sure as hell know why they are getting them. Numbers count.

Hey, it works. Sam Seder is back at MSNBC…he was just on Chris Hayes earlier. I emailed NBC News about that too.

Please…do not be quiet. Let them know. It still is a government for The People.

A police officer in Kaufman is now facing an internal investigation after he showed some goodwill to a shoplifting suspect.

According to Kaufman Police, that officer responded to a call Wednesday at Wal-Mart, where a male suspect was detained inside for trying to steal some food and a drink.

Officials say the suspect told the officer he had not eaten in two days and stole the items because he was hungry.

The officer, a veteran of the department for five years, let the man off with a warning — and provided him with some cash out of his own pocket so he could buy something to eat.

WFAA has chosen not to name this officer, but Kelsey Stevens is his daughter. She told us that

Problem was, the Walmart overlords wanted this dangerous criminal charged. They were hopping mad that the derelict cop let him go, endangering turkey legs and gatorade everywhere. The cop was accused of insubordination, since the department requires that charges be filed if the victim of a crime wants them filed.
Fwiw, when I was a cop, ca. 1980, most large retailers had a policy of not filing charges for small thefts of food, lest the local cops and prosecutors think the store managers were complete assholes. The miscreant was usually let off with a warning and, when appropriate, directions to a soup kitchen or similar establishment.
