I naively assumed he meant surrogate parents and in vitro fertilization. Creepy to ask staffers to do it, but worth resigning over?

Someone pointed out that Franks is an extreme pro-lifer. And they hate IVF.

So he was asking ‘em to be surrogate mothers the “Handmaid’s Tale” way.

I still have severe doubts that it’s as simple as “asked a staffer.” Considering the shit that other Republicans are being allowed to slide on, querying a staffer about possibly being a surrogate seems way too tame to be “I must suddenly spend more time with my family” worthy.

See my note at #14. We’re used to surrogate mothers being impregnated via in vitro fertilization. Franks is a hardcore pro-lifer, and they absolutely despise IVF.

He was asking to fuck them ‘til they got pregnant, then adopt the babies after they gave birth.

Yes, it’s unbelievably inappropriate to ask your employees if you can rent their bodies. If someone can’t see that red line and crosses it then there’s probably all kinds of other lines they aren’t seeing. The fact that he’s an extreme pro-lifer makes it even worse because imagine how he might react if something goes bad and the surrogate has to choose between her own health / safety and continuing the pregnancy.

I think it’s pretty well established the “reason for resigning” is the least the Predator/Congressman could possibly admit without having the constituents back home greet him waving pitchforks and torches.

The most likely reason is sexual assault or actual forcible rape of a staff member or a staff member of another Congresscritter, or a civilian. R’s don’t scurry off for deniable he said/she saids.

That would be a “misunderstanding”. Somebody got seriously brutalized and Ryan said he had to go because they couldn’t sweep it under the rug.

However pure a person’s intentions are they simply can’t ever ask one of their employees something like that without the employee inferring that their answer might have consequences for their career. It is sexual (ie reproductive) harassment deconstructed into the coldest and most clinical terms. The fact that he wouldn’t have derived pleasure through direct interpersonal contact doesn’t really change anything important.

Good grief, I know that the general rule is not to talk politics around family but wow.

My brother had left leaning views about two years ago. Not anymore. He was in town today, and we started chatting it up. I thought it was going to be a safe conversation.

What. In. The. Utter. Fuck.

Unfortunately, I can now relate to other people here about losing family members to things like right wing radio or television.

In this case, he’s turned into a complete conspiracy loon. Apparently the CIA controls everything. They control MSNBC, CNN, and Fox so as to keep the population fighting among themselves. Also, Alex Jones is a CIA agent.

My brother is now a pod person it seems.

Considering my screen name, I am kind of concerned for him now. I hope he’s not losing it. It does run in the family. This behavior is completely bizarre.

re: #33 alloutofcrazyhere

I lost my favourite cousin to the election as well.

In the summer last year, after we traveled to the places in Canada we wanted to see, we went over a thousand miles out of the way to go to Michigan to visit her and my aunt (who is the same age as my mother but is in poor health).

My cousin was all in voting for Jill Stein, and the Bernie Sanders sticker on my car (though by that time Sanders was essentially out but I hadn’t removed it yet) sent her into the stratosphere. When I told her I was voting for Hillary Clinton (aside from the issue I thought she’d make an excellent president, I viewed Donald Trump as a clear and present danger), she was done with me.

We haven’t spoken since. I’ve tried a few times to call, and have written her several postal letters. Nothing.

My aunt, just as non-political as my mother before this election, is quite saddened that a lifetime friendship with my cousin went up in smoke over my car bumper sticker. I don’t know if or how my aunt voted, but she thinks Stein is a dingbat.

I even went to the trouble of sending print photos of the eclipse from my yard.

I didn’t call my cousin a coward or anything else; I didn’t even question her choice of candidate. She queried me over the Sanders sticker, then Clinton, and went off the rails against me.

I regarded her (aside from being the only cousin who still would talk to me; the others long ago disowned me, one for me coming home from leave and showing my photos of Paris - that cousin was jealous that an uneducated boob like me - she is an RN - could go to Paris and she couldn’t, the rest disowned me for being an atheist) as my closest friend.

It is a deep lasting hurt that she won’t talk to me any more … more than fifty years of friendship and family deep-sixed over a freakin’ political position I hold.

I am now suspecting that he is starting to suffer from what I have. He was talking a mile a minute, as well as he was very engaged in the conversation. He’s usually very subdued, quiet, and never expresses an opinion.

I have suspected for years that he has what I have, just a lesser form of it. Perhaps it’s starting to rear its ugly head.

Every decent person of conscience should boycott his visits wherever they are.

Political winner, sure. But outside of that? Not so much. They’d still rather be covered in shit and fire ants than admit they’re wrong in real life too. That ruins families and communities. They do not care.

The problem there is that it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. They have a horrific tendency to accept a bad lot in life by making everyone else’s lots even worse.

You know, trickle-down.

Black unemployment has always been well above the national average, especially for young blacks.

As is the incarceration rate and the rate at which unarmed blacks are killed by LEOs…

Black unemployment is down this year because Trump hasn’t screwed up Obama’s economy yet. He’s still threatening to abrogate NAFTA.

His team is moving to reduce the penalties. Period.

They’ve undermined the penalty and enforcement across multiple agencies, from the IRS to the CFPB (which picked up responsibilities for administering and oversight on mortgages), and Trump’s just flat out lying that they’re going to hike the penalties here.

It’s transparently a lie.

I heard a report the recent tax cuts are taking away deductions for both wild fire and earthquake recovery/rebuilding.

I wonder who that is directed at??? Any guesses?

And it went on to claim 8 California Congresscritters voted for it.

Apple will get a staggering $47 billion windfall from the GOP tax bill, none of which will go to investment. Its all going to go to shareholders (mostly rich people). But the GOP can’t find any money for CHIP.

A good chunk of the tax bill is aimed at punishing liberal states for doing better than Republican ones.

Mr Graham,

I just saw a tweet from you saying: It’s long past time for a Special Counsel to investigate Clinton email scandal, Uranium One, role of Fusion GPS, and FBI and DOJ bias during 2016 campaign.

What the hell has happened to you? At one time you sold yourself as a moderate thinking and reasonable Republican.

Now you are as crazy a loon as the rest of your party. I suggest too much Fox viewing has caused brain disease.

We The People no longer need old unreasonable Republican goats like you in politics. You and your party have lost the plot. From screwing us on healthcare to this stupid tax reform, and now to cover for the Orange Mess in the White House by bringing up Hillary investigations again and again. It’s craven BS. Since I can’t explore that person’s timeline, I’ll say this: Running a congressman out of office is not out of the realm of possibility with Republicans; heck, we got rid of Newt when he was Speaker. And Franken was becoming one of the strongest voices in the party. But, without more proof that I don’t have, I don’t see any reason to think this was a highly coordinated effort.

somewhat ot: i was reading a thread over at politicalwire.com. im not a discus member so i couldnt comment. the thread was about mulvaney and the wells fargo penalties. then it morphed into clinton / sanders etc and — well you know

i came up with this and as usual, probably over obvious and many of you probably thought this long ago (im often slow to conclusion and late for dinner if not called)

if today, you think everything:
the cabinet
education
civil rights
racism
supreme court
federal judges
department of energy
coal
the state of the state department and our foreign relations
the tax bill
ryans stated medicare/medicaid cuts for 2018 (to fix that deficit)
EPA
national parks
russiagate
and now wells fargo
let alone gaffe after gaffe after…
etc etc etc

at this moment, would have been much much worse under clinton, then yes, you were right not to vote for her

Some western states Lizards mentioned getting gas masks to help with particulates from the wildfires. This showed up in an ad from my favorite weird technology junk source. It will work, and uses the easily-replaced NATO 40mm filter pack. NOTE: if you go that route, you really need to get good information/training. People have killed themselves with improperly-worn NBC masks.

sciplus.com

Ooops: Mask might use an older canister (60mm), but will still be good for one long evacuation or excursion.

Were you by any chance watching The Dan Patrick show this morning?

He played some audio of the back ‘n’ forth debate between Cosell and Frank Gifford debating if they should interrupt the game with the announcement. Cosell, strangely, was a bit hesitant and Gifford was all you have to do it.

Apparently ABC News had the info but were trying to decide how to announce it and they relayed the info to the Monday Night Football crew since at the time, that was probably going to reach more people.

Very interesting historical take there…and one of the reasons many mornings I have Dan and The Danettes chattering away in the background. They are not all about sports all the time.

And in Honor of John on this tragic date…one of my favorites for so many reasons. Heck, it also goes out as a good question to so many of our current politicians, especially the big duff in the White House.

When I first heard the news, I just assumed that John had fallen victim to some kind of random street crime. 1980 was one of the peak years for the US crime rate, almost twice what it is today (Fox news hysteria not withstanding). It did not cross my mind that someone might have targeted him specifically.

Trump has admitted on tape to sexually harassing & assaulting women & underage girls. Al Franken resigned for much less. We can’t accept a sexual predator in the Oval Office.

Donald Trump is the Anti-Politician, the wet dream of every enraged contratrian who ever voted.

That is why he is immune to the consequences of what he does and says, even though these things would wreck the campaign or the career of any professional politician

Even that is odd when you think of it. We should be colder than you being a good 200 miles north or so.

We are supposed to see some snow showers tomorrow afternoon/evening. But they seems to have backed off the 1” accumulation. Already seeing long range forecasts that look warmer and dry late next week.

Okay—I have been a hard sell on Jennifer Rubin’s conversion to sanity, but her latest may have finally won me over:

Journalists: Forget the Rust Belt diners. Head for the suburban yoga classes.

Ivy League-educated journalists donned flannel shirts, rented American-made cars and headed for the Rust Belt. They poked and prodded their subjects, hung out at diners and auto body shops. With furrowed brows they set out to learn the mysteries of the non-college-educated white males, the core of President Trump’s base. Readers vicariously traveled to Youngstown, Ohio, and western Michigan (you wonder whether the reporters didn’t stumble over one another in their quest for “the forgotten man and woman”)…

Now that Trump has been shown to be just as ignorant, unhinged, racist, incompetent, authoritarian and unfit as his critics said, the Trump voters (sporting an uncanny willingness to deny reality or just lie) don’t seem so interesting; they just sound wacky. Rather than the repositories of moral truth, they sound mean-spirited and selfish. They can’t see the real victims in society because they are convinced they’re the real victims…

Instead of spending more time studying this tribe of Americans, maybe the media should climb into Volvos, pack their Starbucks travel mugs and head for college-educated suburbia. There they will find another tribe of Americans, bigger than the non-college-educated male contingent. This group of voters may be the subject of next year’s most important political science study project. Meet the college-educated women.

It’s already getting windy. I ran my recyclables bin out to the garage to dump in the city’s collection bin and about froze.

I did have to stop and marvel at one thing though. Yesterday when I was going out to the garage, I came out around the side of my house and scattered what must have been 75 starlings out of my yard. They jumped to the trees and the utility wires in the alley. They must have waited til I was gone to the store and got back to lunch.

I just discovered that nature, the birds, do lawn aeration! I swear, just about every inch of my lawn has a beak hole in it. Must have been a lot of grubs near the surface since it was still mild weather. And two days before I buzzed my lawn short for the winter.

The pack of starlings must have been on the move. Not a one visible today.

As someone who survived his 20s on tips, this is fuckin’ huge. I remember when they started estimating tips as taxable income under Reagan. Any time someone tipped less than 15% it actually cost the waiter money in taxes as they were taxed on that as income.

ALWAYS TIP IN CASH. (Even if the gratuity is included in the bill)

an odd and idle thought

a lot of my music library consists of mp3s converted from cassettes that were recorded from vinyl. also i used to own a turntable that connected to my pc and i recorded a lot of vinyl directly that way. and i’ve bought cds and converted them too mp3. so it’s a big mp3 library.

when i listen to music at home i use windows media player
if it’s an album, and i’m posting it here, i’ll find a youtube for the embed

why dont i just listen to the youtube?
i never even thought about it until today - probably “cause i’ve always done it that way”

The latkes were fried and the kosher lamb chops were prepared on Thursday, just as in past years, for the first White House Hanukkah party of the Trump era. But there was one prominent break with tradition: President Trump did not invite Democratic lawmakers.

Mr. Trump, who prizes loyalty and seldom forgets a slight, left Democratic members of Congress off his Hanukkah list this year, according to congressional aides tracking the invites. He also did not invite Reform Jewish leaders who have been critical of him or progressive Jewish activists who have differed with him publicly on policy issues.

Onions for sure, all of the above in mild chicken broth. The sausage is Johnsonville brand andouille but it’s nothing like andouille should be. Still, and all, it’s a decent tasting sausage for the price. Too homogeneous in texture, more like a hot dog.

Last thread had a posting of a tweet from the Reagan Battalion showing Moore calling America evil:
https://twitter.com/ReaganBattalion

The clip was from an interview in the Guardian. The clip starts around the 6:40 mark.

It’s pretty astounding. The interviewer points out Reagan calling the USSR the focus of evil, and Moore comes back with “you could say that very well about America”. And why is Moore equating America with the Communist dictatorship? Supporting gay marriage. It’s completely gratuitous — Moore could have pointed out that Reagan wasn’t talking about present day Russia, but he couldn’t control his hatred of a gay-accommodating America.
