Creation Festival Founder Harry Thomas Arrested and Charged With Multiple Counts of Child Molestation

Harry L. Thomas is the pastor of Come Alive New Testament Church in Medford, New Jersey, and founder of the Creation Festival, one of the most popular Christian music festivals in America.

And tonight, he’s under arrest for sexually assaulting four children over the course of 16 years.

Come Alive Church, which “believe[s] in the entire teachings of the inspired Word of God as recorded in the Old and New Testament of the Holy Bible,” according to its website, released a statement Thursday night:

“It is with deep regret and saddened hearts that the board of Come Alive International and Creation Festivals along with the Elders and Trustees of Come Alive New Testament Church have indefinitely suspended Pastor Harry Thomas from all leadership positions with the church, festival and all associated ministries. While the allegations are unrelated to his roles in these ministries, leadership has determined this to be the proper course of action at this time until there can be a full investigation. It is requested that all pray for the parties involved and refrain from speculation regarding the circumstances.”

The church has responded to this news by putting their entire website under password protection tonight.

The whole Website? The only reason I can think they would do that is they are trying to hide evidence that he might (or they might) have put there, so they can get busy trying to scrub evidence of “grooming” or whatnot.

This is so typical of Evangelical churches—hiding, putting the church website under password protection—when something like this happens. I don’t know how many news articles I’ve read where when the pastor goes to court, the entire church is there, lined up behind pastor, and there’s nobody supporting the family/ies of the abused. Over and over and over and over again. I’m thoroughly sick of it.

We had one of these locally (or at least only the one caught so far). A very respected fundie preacher, Baptist as I recall rather than evangelical, although in these woods the difference is razor thin. He loved him some youth groups and often had them over to his home. He especially liked preteen girls, eleven or twelve years old. As far as anyone knows, he didn’t physically molest them. What he did was set up hidden videocams in his bathrooms so he could record them using the toilet for his later delectation. I think he got sentenced to 12 years. And of course everybody was so amazed.

Not just Evangelical churches. Catholic churches (and dioceses) do it too, as do many other Protestant churches.

There used to be a Website called Reformation(dot)com which detailed the thousands of Protestant pastors or churches busted and people sent to trial and jail for the exact same things.

This is not an Evangelical problem. It is a Religion problem.

(The Website was put out of business in June of this year. The last screen capture can be found at web.archive.org where they list all the cases against Protestant churches and ministers of all denominations)

So I’ll re-post here For Nines (asking about my Mississippi gig):

It went well, thanks for asking! The folks at the venue were very hospitable, the crowd was great, the food was amazing, the stage crew were total pros and made everything easy. They’re already talking about having us back in the Spring.

The only things I can complain about are the weather (hoped it would be warmer), and I got the full TSA treatment when I got back to New Orleans. Full pat-down, hand swab, the works. That kinda sucked after I got put into pre-scan on the way out of NY. That’s show biz, I guess.

And I have to work on traveling lighter as far as gear. I had to take a Line 6 Pod XT Live, and I wanted to just leave it in Gulfport. I’m thinking Santa might be bringing me a Tech21 Fly Rig for Christmas, though. That’ll come in handy for a string of Florida gigs I gotta do in January.

And for Stanley (asking about the potential meetup with Eclectic Heretic)…

The meetup unfortunately didn’t happen. It will next time. I still owe Eclectic a beer. :)

Judging from the clip, the static visuals are not bad, but the action is too abrupt (no apparent inertial effects) and cartoon-y. So, it looks like CGI. I don’t mind it, because it’s not unlike watching live action + animation flicks - Who Framed Roger Rabbit? for example. When CGI reaches the point when you can’t tell the difference between live actor and CG actor, the acting business will be toast.

Your bias is showing. Most studies show sexual abuse by priests are in line with sexual abuse by most professions that have regular contact with children. Organizations of all types tend to try to cover it up as well. It can be argued that churches should be held to a higher standard, because well…they’re churches, but it most certainly isn’t a religion problem.

The private school industry is rife with sexual abuse scandals that go on for decades.

Former chairman of the Colorado GOP convicted of voter fraud and forgery, specifically the in-person kind that he (and many Republicans) accuse Democrats of.

The 58-year-old, who also was a KLZ radio host, was charged in February after authorities say DNA evidence and handwriting analysis linked him to the ballot of his ex, Kelly Curtis.

The Weld County District Attorney’s Office says court testimony during Curtis’ trial revealed that Kelly Curtis had moved to Charleston, S.C., in December 2015. When she called the county’s clerk and recorder to get her mail-in ballot, she was told she had already voted.

The problem is certainly not solely a religion problem. Like many authoritarian structures that tell people not to question what the authority says, religions make it easier, as do police departments, the military, &c.

For churches, a better term would be “it’s a hypocrisy problem” since churches preach against “sins of the flesh,” adultery, &c. Other authoritarian organisations don’t generally do that.

Public schools, too. I’ve related the history here of my high school physics teacher, who was let go from one LI school district for alleged sexual abuse only to be hired by my high school district, which knew of the allegations at the time. He continued working in that school district as a teacher and coach for nearly 20 years, while continuing to molest girls and physically discipline boys until one girl finally stood up and reported that he had raped her during a school trip.

I read the Fountainhead in 11th grade philosophy class and then saw Ayn interviewed by Phil Donohue. It was sickening. She was even attacking voluntary charity. I feel kind of bad for Ayn Rand since she was someone who experienced the USSR but she created a terrible inversion of Socialism that causes just as much damage. And I will say this about Marx, I don’t think he ever intended for his philosophy to be what Mao and Stalin turned it into.

I was talking with a friend earlier about this, as both of us read the original manga years ago. In fact it’s been so long since I read them that I had to do a Google image search just to remind myself that her eyes really are that large in proportion to her face. It’s one of the downsides to adapting anything drawn/animated to live-action, that the proportions that we’re willing to accept in that medium don’t work really well outside it.

Oh no doubt but no offense to your SiL but those early years were really really bad. It doesn’t justify her philosophy at all anymore than those people who witnessed Communism and became Fascists. The funny as hell thing in class was seeing the people who were conservative on the bio-ethics issues we discussed- we discussed euthanasia and Dr. Kevorkian, a lot of those people loved hearing Rand’s diatribes on economics.

I read Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead, the summer before I started college, when I stayed with my grandmother and step-grandfather. One of his sons had read them. I wasn’t terribly impressed, though I actually took slightly more away from the Fountainhead, mainly pursue what you want to do, which was probably the wrong lesson. Sadly, her sex scenes were so bad even me as a horny 18 year old in 1988 didn’t get much out of them.

Got a new neighbor a few months ago, older guy, almost creepily polite and… calm (I don’t have another word for it). From my first meeting I was put on a weird kind of alert. The same feeling I get when in the presence of a predator, like a coyote or bobcat. Muscles slightly tensed, prepared, an autonomic response. Wait. Watch. Do. Not. Trust.

He soon befriended another neighbor in the spot next to him. Sweet guy with issues, deeply religious, working to start a ministry and service charity. Very into animal rescue - the reason I now have two cats. Quite inept really but his heart is in the right place. So the creepy guy is also into starting a ministry, some weird thing about getting a donated boat and doing revivals along the Mississippi River or some shit. Elmer Gantry immediately came to mind as he was describing his plans to me. He gets with the sweet guy with issues and starts making plans with him to do events, especially events with kids. Sweet guy is all excited thinking he’s got help for his mission, a true believer.

One night I’m out walking Buddy and all hell is breaking loose over there. Sweet guy is hysterical, screaming at creepy guy incoherently (he drinks a lot and loses it when he does). I read Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead, the summer before I started college, when I stayed with my grandmother and step-grandfather. One of his sons had read them. I wasn’t terribly impressed, though I actually took slightly more away from the Fountainhead, mainly pursue what you want to do, which was probably the wrong lesson. Sadly, her sex scenes were so bad even me as a horny 18 year old in 1988 didn’t get much out of them.

Fountainhead lost me when Roark destroyed his buildings. I just thought. What a whiny asshole. We saw the Gary Cooper version that Rand herself I believe either produced and or wrote the screenplay for.

Hey teleskiguy, the resort you are now working is the place where my kid learned to ski. Her dad moved to that area when she was eight. He was in construction and got a job with a crew that did most of their work in Aspen. So, I’d fly her out for every other Christmas and Easter and they would spend day on the slopes. Her summers with him were spent hiking and camping…when she wasn’t riding horses somewhere.
She has also been complaining about the lack of ski-able snow. But she’s been happy that the droves of ski-tourists haven’t arrived yet. A bit of a breather between seasons is nice, no?

Your bias is showing. Most studies show sexual abuse by priests are in line with sexual abuse by most professions that have regular contact with children. Organizations of all types tend to try to cover it up as well. It can be argued that churches should be held to a higher standard, because well…they’re churches, but it most certainly isn’t a religion problem.

The private school industry is rife with sexual abuse scandals that go on for decades.

Except that churches, the Catholic church in particular, has SO. MANY. MORE. places than any other organization to transfer their miscreants and hide them…

Participation trophies and you Millennials. *Points to the fact that silver and bronze medals have existed sicne the 1896 Athens Olympics* and that division champions and league champions who don’t go on to win the entire thing are still recongized. Teh trophy is more a keepsake anyhow. I really never caerd about the trophy. I did like the team party at Fuddruckers though. That was fun!

The problem is certainly not solely a religion problem. Like many authoritarian structures that tell people not to question what the authority says, religions make it easier, as do police departments, the military, &c.

For churches, a better term would be “it’s a hypocrisy problem” since churches preach against “sins of the flesh,” adultery, &c. Other authoritarian organisations don’t generally do that.

At the same time, many corporations state they have an “anti-retaliation policy”-but at the same time when someone from such a corporation reaches the end of the line in the corporation and then decides to “air it out” to the media - well, all you have to do is look at what happened to many whistle-blowers during The Great Recession -demoted, then laid off, and have to fight through the judicial system for speaking out in the first place….

PBS’s Frontline episode “The Warning” is a must-watch….

In high school during my junior and senior year, the soccer team I played for (I was a halfback) won the 3A state championship both years. We got two big trophies in a glass case at the high school, with a picture of our teams and names of the players. In high school jazz band (I played electric bass guitar) we won some competition in Aspen and we got a trophy, I don’t know where that one is, band is dorky and sports is jocky and I dabbled in both worlds.

I won a few *medals* skiing. And that’s it. That’s my extent of trophies and awards for sports or whatever.

Yeah I remember us all getting trophies at each end of the season of my first youth soccer team. Later on after I moved to Redmond and got on a select team they were more serious and frugal with that stuff.

I also remember that my Dad had a bunch of medals from his rifle team days in the early 50’s. I think he maybe had one 3rd place medal and the rest were 4th, 5th & 6th, even 7th & 8th place ones. He’s the first to admit that he was a rubbish marksman and mostly just stayed in because he had a crush on one of the girls on the team.

Point being you’re right, participation trophies aren’t anything new. Everyone just wants to be able to say they had it rough compared to “kids these days.”

I got a participation ribbon in 2010 (well, seventh place in the National Hammered Dulcimer Competition). I was fifty years old, hardly a millenial.

The trophy if anything was more something to remember the team for, kind of like a team photo I guess.People who shit on Millennials are the same people who call us ultra sensitive but can also be found bitching about Starbucks on Twitter and Facebook for using a paper cup with a decoration they don’t like.

I have found that children do not need to be constantly praised or rewarded for their accomplishments, they just need to be recognized for them. Instead of “What a beautiful picture of a house!” it suffices to say “Wow, look, the house is blue and there is smoke coming from the chimney and an apple tree next to it!”. To a child, those comments are received as praise.

A nice group photo of the team that the child played in would be similar level of recognition and the child could be just as proud of it as if it were a participation trophy.

Although I was still in high school, I knew it was total bullshit. Then, as a freshman, I met a girl who said she had helped Velikovsky prepare the manuscript, and she worshiped the guy. She said it was all true. I lost interest in her very quickly.

The 1970’s really was the Golden Age of Woowoo. From books, to TV “documentaries” (LOLOL) to feature films. I enjoy watching the UFO/Ancient Astronauts/cryptid/paranormal phenomenon woowoo on YouTube, but for me, it’s a good chuckle (and a bit of nostalgia, to be fair, as I remember watching some of them when I was a kid).

Good God, 40 years ago was 1977, not 1877. Even in Alabama, that shit was not tolerated by 1977. Yes, people got married young…to other young people. A middle-aged man cruising for pre-teen girls in 1977 was every bit as creepy and perverted as it is today. Which is why he was banned from a shopping mall.

I’ll open up a bit about myself and say that this Roy Moore stuff brings back some memories that I’ve forgotten over the years. In the mid 80’s I was a single guy who was living the good life; long hair, single, good job, a nice car and motorcycle, money to spend and playing guitar in a local band for fun. All of the ladies I had dated up to then were in my age group (+- 3 years) and I was enjoying my dating life. Then I met the person that I would be marrying two years later.

Long story short, at the time I was 25 and she was 17. We briefly met at a friend’s house and after that, her mind was made up but I had no idea what I was in for. She looked a hell of a lot older than the 17 years of age she was and I never thought to ask her age right away because she was hanging around peeps in my age group. After talking to her a few times, my Spidey sense started tingling so I asked her age and just about crapped my pants when she told me. A few more questions quickly established that she was sweet 17 and never been -ahem-… anything. By this time it was clear that she was very interested in me and let me just say that I would have been a fool not to have been interested in her. If she had been in my age group.

I thought about this for about two seconds and then told her “I’m the guy that your Mom warned you about. I smoke weed, I have long hair, I play guitar in a band, I ride a motorcycle and drive a hot car. I also have left a long trail of ex-girlfriends in my wake and even if you were old enough, I wouldn’t want you to become another one.” I didn’t see or hear from her until two weeks later when she showed up at my job and dropped off a note for me. I won’t go in to what the note said but I will say that it did lead to us eventually becoming friends. That later led to meeting her Mother (her Dad had passed away from cancer two years before we met) when her Mom was having transmission problems with her Olds. I replaced the trans with a junkyard unit that I rebuilt, saved her a lot of money and unknowingly scored some future Mother in law points.

My point in telling this is that at that time I had to do some things that made me feel real creepy. The first was taking my future wife to her Junior prom. She didn’t have a date and she asked me to take her. I think her problem with guys her age was that she is tall (5’ 10”) and either looked other guys in the eye or looked down at them, because it sure wasn’t her looks. Either way, I told her that I would as long as it was OK with her mom. For some reason her mom was OK with it as long as she was home afterward, which I had no problem with at all.

That prom was something I will never forget. Damn was I ever out of place. I’ll never forget the discomfort I felt but I did my part and made sure that she had a nice evening. I felt better after a bit but I was glad when it was over. I took her home right afterward, as promised. I also took her to her Senior prom but by that time we knew that we had a future together, so that one went much better. Especially since it was the last one!

After she graduated she told her Mom that we were going to get married. Her Mom said “NO!” and asked if she was pregnant (NO!). My (now) wife told her that we were planning to get married the following spring and that it was her choice to make. My wife was 19 when we were married and I would guess that it took about eight years of marriage before her mom decided that I was good enough for her daughter. Her Mom passed in our 13th year of marriage and we are now in our 31st. I am happy to say that we were the best of friends when she passed and I dearly miss her friendship.

So I know what it’s like to have that creep factor feeling, it’s what drove me away from my future wife. It took her time to convince me to get me talking to her again and to knock down that barrier I had. That Roy was actively and repeatedly breaking that barrier makes it clear that he never saw it. Men in their 30’s chasing teenage girls wasn’t appropriate in the 80’s, nor the 70’s. Hell, I was creeped out by a 17 year old when I was 25 because it wasn’t the norm.

Roy had no problem pursuing teens while in his 30’s because he is a creep.

Some interesting family notes: My wife had her Mom over a barrel regarding our age difference; her Mom and Dad were nine years apart in age and we are “only” eight. Her Mom lost the argument after that. One thing that attracted me to my wife was that she i ‘old school’, like she was from my age group or even earlier. I think this was because her Dad was born in 1919, her Mom in 1928 and she was born in 1967. My Dad was born in 1934, my Mom in 1939 and myself in 1959. Our birthdays are a week apart and we turn 50 and 58 this month.

Hell, the adults can even look at their own events for participation trophies. How about a motorcycle poker run? Trophies for longest distance, oldest/youngest rider, worst luck, worst breakdown and numerous other categories.

I have found that children do not need to be constantly praised or rewarded for their accomplishments, they just need to be recognized for them. Instead of “What a beautiful picture of a house!” it suffices to say “Wow, look, the house is blue and there is smoke coming from the chimney and an apple tree next to it!”. To a child, those comments are received as praise.

According to supposed child psych/developmental psych “experts” — they need to be praised for effort. “What a beautiful picture” if it actually is, tells them to only do things they’re already good at. And if it’s not, it tells them that you’re too biased for your feedback to be meaningful. But “wow, you must have worked really hard on this, I can tell, that’s awesome” encourages them to apply themselves to things they can improve.

The federal government can raise aggregate demand, either through direct public investment or by getting more money into consumers’ pockets through welfare state spending. But the conservative turn in American governance inaugurated by Ronald Reagan pulled way back on that. The Fed itself also went nuclear to fight inflation around 1980: It jacked interest rates into the stratosphere, causing a massive recession and a wipeout for the working class. Unions collapsed, we stopped raising the minimum wage, and we cut taxes on the wealthy. That meant a lot less money went to lower- and middle-class Americans, and a lot more went to the wealthy, where it sits uselessly in financial markets rather than being recycled into new economic activity.

To that I would add banking deregulation. Banks were once required by law to pay at least 5.25% on savings accounts, and as the author notes, CD rates were often twice that or more. After deregulation, banks could pay whatever they pleased, which nowadays is seldom more than 1%. With inflation being 2-3%, it doesn’t take an econ degree to understand why people have no incentive to stash money in bank savings accounts. Plus, banks have all kinds of punitive fees now, even more reason to be wary of banks.

As a personal postscript to this comment, deciding to leave the USA to work abroad turned out to be a very wise financial decision, though at the time I thought I was mad to take such a huge pay cut, as measured in US dollars. Two of my biggest expenses — housing and utilities — were eliminated, since Chinese schools typically supply both, or at least pay most of the costs. I don’t need a car, since I live within walking distance of my workplace. Food and clothing are remarkably cheap. And I am fortunate not to require any expensive medication or medical care.

So, I can save most of my pay, meager as it is by US standards. When I did the math several years ago, I was astounded to find my net pay in China was more than my net pay (after expenses) had been in the USA, even with an income five times greater.

Being an empty nester helps, too.

My greatest annoyance and I’m not even a socialist is how every single economic conservative thinks that those who want a more involved government in the economy want us to be Venezuela. Scandinavia is their model and those countries do a good job providing for their citizens. Now if the conservatives want to debate the fact that those countries have much smaller economies than ours and thus can do things like that, that’s one thing but I wish these people would shut the hell up about how every country that is more socialist than we are is some kind of hellhole and that every or even most socialist wants the U.S. to be Venezuela.

Northwest of Atlanta we have a foot of snow. A foot! Miss Dog loves it. Won’t swim in the pool during warm weather, but she has no problem staying out in cold, very wet snow til she’s shivering. And like a little kid, l have to force her to come inside,lol. I’m worried about trees and power lines breaking. The Kid is bummed he’s going to miss a show in Atlanta, but I don’t think anyone should be driving in this crap. I think there’s going to be a fight about this later.

Honestly I get tired of conservatives who complain about the quality of our roads, schools, etc and then you suggest something like “Well we may need more taxes” to pay for this and they go berserk. They say you can’t solve a problem by throwing money at it and yeah that’s actually true but the opposite is true too, you create problems by totally ignoring a problem. If I don’t improve my house(country’s) foundation, it’s going to go to shit. I firmly believe a nation that invests in its people is a successful nation-state. Do we need socialism? I don’t think so but we sure as hell don’t need conservative interpretations of capitalism either which actually embolden socialists. The only real difference between a diehard socialist and diehard capitalist is the former believes capitalism exploits people and is terrified by that, the latter believes that too and is okay with it cuz the MARKET!

Exactly. I’d love to know this since they’re constantly telling us to live in Venezuela. Economically? My ideal is probably the mid 60’s but with respect for the rights of all regardless of national origin, race, gender, etc. These guys are stuck in the past.

This is a fact highly discouraging to those that seek to shape the message in their favor. A more objective view of governance and management is the obvious truth of the matter.

The photographer of the images from the rally was very good at using the clumps of people in a few sections and with the right exposure to have the darkened arena cover for the rest of the open space.

I’ll open up a bit about myself and say that this Roy Moore stuff brings back some memories that I’ve forgotten over the years. In the mid 80’s I was a single guy who was living the good life; long hair, single, good job, a nice car and motorcycle, money to spend and playing guitar in a local band for fun. All of the ladies I had dated up to then were in my age group (+- 3 years) and I was enjoying my dating life. Then I met the person that I would be marrying two years later.

Long story short, at the time I was 25 and she was 17. We briefly met at a friend’s house and after that, her mind was made up but I had no idea what I was in for. She looked a hell of a lot older than the 17 years of age she was and I never thought to ask her age right away because she was hanging around peeps in my age group. After talking to her a few times, my Spidey sense started tingling so I asked her age and just about crapped my pants when she told me. A few more questions quickly established that she was sweet 17 and never been -ahem-… anything. By this time it was clear that she was very interested in me and let me just say that I would have been a fool not to have been interested in her. If she had been in my age group.

I thought about this for about two seconds and then told her “I’m the guy that your Mom warned you about. I smoke weed, I have long hair, I play guitar in a band, I ride a motorcycle and drive a hot car. I also have left a long trail of ex-girlfriends in my wake and even if you were old enough, I wouldn’t want you to become another one.” I didn’t see or hear from her until two weeks later when she showed up at my job and dropped off a note for me. I won’t go in to what the note said but I will say that it did lead to us eventually becoming friends. That later led to meeting her Mother (her Dad had passed away from cancer two years before we met) when her Mom was having transmission problems with her Olds. I replaced the trans with a junkyard unit that I rebuilt, saved her a lot of money and unknowingly scored some future Mother in law points.

My point in telling this is that at that time I had to do some things that made me feel real creepy. The first was taking my future wife to her Junior prom. She didn’t have a date and she asked me to take her. I think her problem with guys her age was that she is tall (5’ 10”) and either looked other guys in the eye or looked down at them, because it sure wasn’t her looks. Either way, I told her that I would as long as it was OK with her mom. For some reason her mom was OK with it as long as she was home afterward, which I had no problem with at all.

That prom was something I will never forget. Damn was I ever out of place. I’ll never forget the discomfort I felt but I did my part and made sure that she had a nice evening. I felt better after a bit but I was glad when it was over. I took her home right afterward, as promised. I also took her to her Senior prom but by that time we knew that we had a future together, so that one went much better. Especially since it was the last one!

After she graduated she told her Mom that we were going to get married. Her Mom said “NO!” and asked if she was pregnant (NO!). My (now) wife told her that we were planning to get married the following spring and that it was her choice to make. My wife was 19 when we were married and I would guess that it took about eight years of marriage before her mom decided that I was good enough for her daughter. Her Mom passed in our 13th year of marriage and we are now in our 31st. I am happy to say that we were the best of friends when she passed and I dearly miss her friendship.

So I know what it’s like to have that creep factor feeling, it’s what drove me away from my future wife. It took her time to convince me to get me talking to her again and to knock down that barrier I had. That Roy was actively and repeatedly breaking that barrier makes it clear that he never saw it. Men in their 30’s chasing teenage girls wasn’t appropriate in the 80’s, nor the 70’s. Hell, I was creeped out by a 17 year old when I was 25 because it wasn’t the norm.

Roy had no problem pursuing teens while in his 30’s because he is a creep.

Some interesting family notes: My wife had her Mom over a barrel regarding our age difference; her Mom and Dad were nine years apart in age and we are “only” eight. Her Mom lost the argument after that. One thing that attracted me to my wife was that she i ‘old school’, like she was from my age group or even earlier. I think this was because her Dad was born in 1919, her Mom in 1928 and she was born in 1967. My Dad was born in 1934, my Mom in 1939 and myself in 1959. Our birthdays are a week apart and we turn 50 and 58 this month.

My economic views are simple- there are some things I trust the government better with, there are some things I trust the market with, there are yet other things I think both are trusted with. I see diehard anti-government people and die hard socialists in the same realm. They have more in common in how they see the world than tehy don’t.

Years ago I got into an argument with Mr Chile the leader of the Chicago Boys Milton Friedman over Chile. I pointed out that he always said that free markets are a cornerstone of a free society. I then asked him if that was so why was Chile under Pinochet a police state. He kept saying, “You have to understand that Chile is a special case.” and I replied, “A special case for WHAT? Proving that you’re wrong about market aboslution?”. He continued to act as your typical communist conservative pushing the mantra that conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed…

I think we need to stop using the word socialism completely and talk about quantity of scale. This is something most everyone understands and relates to. We know that if you buy a case of 24 cans of something that the individual cost per can is reduced. It’s why Big Box stores have lower prices than small shops, because as large corporations buying thousands or millions of units they can get them cheaper than someone buying only a few.

Single payer healthcare is simply taking advantage of quantity of scale to provide services, prescription drugs, etc. at reduced costs over a bunch of individual for-profit insurance companies. One entity in charge of highways and infrastructure can do the job less expensively than a bunch of individual contractors. Ditto most anything that we need collectively.

It’s just… wait for it… capitalism.

Yesterday I revived a 47 year old bicycle that spent the last 30 years in somebody’s rafters, or rather I finished it yesterday. Worked on it for a week. Stared at it for a week before that. Never overhauled one of those coaster brakes before, buy it’s in the book, so I was fine. Not the original rear wheel, but old enough to go with the bike. I revived the original front wheel with an axle and two spokes. It’s a Schwinn Stingray. Stem wouldn’t move, but I put a new bolt in it in case it ever wanted to move, it won’t. Original grips and front tire, new sissy bar and banana seat with a velour cover. Man it looked good on the guy’s matching green SUV roof. Then he laid it down and tied it. After he paid and gave me a $10 tip. Not the first tip I ever got, but maybe the biggest. Since I was a dishwasher in the best restaurant in Portland, OR, at least.

Sorry to interrupt all the philosophizing and politicking. This used to be a bike blog. Sort of.

With inflation being 2-3%, it doesn’t take an econ degree to understand why people have no incentive to stash money in bank savings accounts. Plus, banks have all kinds of punitive fees now, even more reason to be wary of banks.

Also explains a lot of the money in stocks. Banks won’t pay, Wall Street does. With all the risk that carries.

Ahhh…the Schwinn Stingray. I raced against a many of those, as they were The Big Thing when I was about 10 or so. Some of them had a “cheater” slick big rear tire on them.

I learned a lot about fashion and its influence on the brain. A lot of kids thought the stingray the baddest bike on earth and the fastest. How could they not be, they were Stingrays…like the Corvette.

But if you had a 26” bike, you could dust them. Something to do with geometry and even torque, etc. Science. They were pumping their hearts out with the little tires…the big bikes would just stroke on by.

Then Schwinn upped the game with the 5-speed gearshift models. I think some had names like “Orange Crate” and the like…after hot rods drag racers of the day. Look out!

I went with an “English Racer” 3-speed (out of the hub center) 27” narrow tires and a nice deep red. Good looking bike. Still could handle the Stingrays.

They really were all great bikes. Great exercise and around my neighborhood, we were on our bikes all day, going to the parks to play ball, to friends houses, and the almost daily race around the big block…which included two hills and two dips and one flat finish line street.

Good times.

One of the biggest and most unexpected results of having a home with cats is waking up in the morning to find my house in very different shape than it was when I went to bed. Not used to that at all. This morning I saw this as I left the bedroom…

Yesterday I revived a 47 year old bicycle that spent the last 30 years in somebody’s rafters, or rather I finished it yesterday. Worked on it for a week. Stared at it for a week before that. Never overhauled one of those coaster brakes before, buy it’s in the book, so I was fine. Not the original rear wheel, but old enough to go with the bike. I revived the original front wheel with an axle and two spokes. It’s a Schwinn Stingray. Stem wouldn’t move, but I put a new bolt in it in case it ever wanted to move, it won’t. Original grips and front tire, new sissy bar and banana seat with a velour cover. Man it looked good on the guy’s matching green SUV roof. Then he laid it down and tied it. After he paid and gave me a $10 tip. Not the first tip I ever got, but maybe the biggest. Since I was a dishwasher in the best restaurant in Portland, OR, at least.

Sorry to interrupt all the philosophizing and politicking. This used to be a bike blog. Sort of.

They don’t have to be wingnuts. I see this all. the. time. in friends who are not at all wingnuts. These are good people who I have never seen treat any others with a lack of respect or compassion, who are horrified by hate and absolutely believe in civil rights for all. Then they come out with racist stereotype comments that make my jaw drop. They think they are just stating facts and cannot be deterred from them even when I point out how stupid it is and support it with facts that contradict them with their agreement.

Example: a friend of mine in a discussion of Dancing With the Stars.

her: You know how blacks have rhythm. They have an advantage.
me: C’mon, that’s a ridiculous stereotype. How many black celebrities have we seen on the show who couldn’t keep a beat if their lives depended on it?
her: Well, that’s true.

A few months later…
