She’s correct. My brother lives in Nevada. He actually supported Bernie last year but he finds caucuses undemocratic. Honestly, I’d be fine with doing away with the Super-delegates if all caucuses are eliminated and replaced with primaries. I’ll even budge on the closed/open primary issue though I think it should be up to the state but caucuses need to go for the reasons why Ana described much better than I could.

Because they know that caucuses favored them. IMO you don’t get to complain about the SDs while insisting that the caucuses remain especially given that the SDs don’t count until much later. I know AM likes Jane but agh anyone who defends low turnout, I have a problem with her even if I do have an unique connection with Jane that I don’t feel like sharing publicly.

I’m not aware of this development (Jane Kleeb arguing in favour of low turnout for the caucuses).

I can’t seem to find anything in a search engine about it.

I’m not a big fan of caucuses either (last year was the first time I ever lived in a place that used them).

The caucus here was not “undemocratic” as claimed though: anyone in the Democratic Party could request an absentee ballot from the party, and those were sent in to each county caucus site.

In our county, when it came time to count votes, the absentee ballots were opened and those votes counted.

People who were housebound, or at work, or otherwise couldn’t attend were afforded the opportunity to vote.

I can’t say how that went for caucuses in other states, but here every single person registered as a Democrat got an absentee ballot card in the mail a few months before the caucus.

I disagree they were undemocratic. (As I noted, every person registered as a Democrat in my state got a card to request an absentee ballot. All those ballots were counted, even though they were silent. You could even come to the caucus, fill in a ballot right then, and leave and it would be counted—a couple people here did that as well.)

As for “the loudest persons being heard,” all politics is like that. If by “loudest” she means “shoutiest,” that would mean the meeting was run poorly.

That would be something if every candidate simply filled out a questionnaire, didn’t campaign at all, and everyone voted.

Fair enough. I disagree though that all politics is like that though. I really think voting should be private and between one’s self one well one’s self.

I’ve attended caucuses in Illinois and they are ridiculous.
You get locked in a room and people do indeed shout, bully, and there is nothing remotely resembling a secret ballot.
And there was no option for mail in ballots.

That’s one of the reasons I was so upset that the GOP in Kentucky bowed to Rand Paul for a caucus rather than a primary when he was running for president and senate at the same time. I refused to participate because I also believe they are extremely undemocratic.

Is it a secret ballot, or “candidate A supporters go stand under their banner, candidate B supporters under the banner on the other side of the gym, candidate C in that corner…”

Lots of people will see their bosses, co-workers, parents, siblings, significant others, the bully from 4th grade who they won’t even get a drink at the bar if he’s there… it can be difficult to make a very public stand for a different candidate than these people you have to see every day and would rather not fight with.

I don’t disagree with his sentiment. However, presenting marijuana use as an acceptable thing that results in its legalization nationally - and I believe it will - will prevent more young black lives from being ruined by incarceration from its use. We can’t change the past. We can influence the present and future.

The caucuses are bad because they don’t prepare your candidate for the national election. We don’t choose the Olympic basketball team by holding a boxing match. If we want to win at the ballot box in November we need to practice at the polls. The primaries must be about issues and getting out the vote.

caucusing is not for the largely unengaged general public as they are mostly political amateurs,

there is a lot more to understand than “who i want to vote for in each race”

caucusing is for semi-pros and intimidates the “uninitiated”

So, the Okeanos Explorer spent 4 hours going over and around a sunken ship. Not as exciting as the warships in the Pacific, but still had its own fascination.

What I guess I find even more interesting is that the shore based talking-heads who are the experts couldn’t identify the ship. 19th century, but that’s all they could deduce.

They noted that they try to find any records of lost ships in the Gulf of Mexico, but the find wrecks like this one which just don’t fit the logs of missing ships.

Which shows us once again that a lot can happen and not be recorded or remembered.

So, I went out and cleaned off my walkways from the nice fluffy snow while it hasn’t been walked on much, etc.

Suddenly, a bunch of cars started pulling up and parking on the street and then as the young occupants started to get out trunks opened and music stands and cases started to come out.

I asked one young man that pulled up right where I was standing and was unloading out of his car if there was a concert this evening somewhere…jokingly. Sure ‘nuff, there is. He didn’t know where, but it was one of the bigger old homes down around the corner from me.

I asked how many are in the band/orchestra and he said up to 30, but tonight probably 15. He said they would be doing some tunes outdoors and some in at a party so no woodwinds, brass only.

They are going to do some popular music and even a few classic pieces.

They are all in some kind of a ensemble that plays at one of the renewed old classic theaters as back up to their stage programs and do some shows themselves. All seem to be 20/30 in age. I’m kinda guessing many were ex OSU band and college orchestra members. Saw several OSU stocking caps and scarves.

Pretty cool. I wonder if one of the huge houses along the street were going to be using their third floor. Some of these old places around here had ballrooms on the third floor.

The far-left keep engaging in this fantasy that if they withhold their votes, Democrats will shift their policies to win them over rather than going for votes that are easier to attain.

‘Once in a lifetime find’: Dinosaur tail discovered trapped in amber

The tail of a 99-million-year-old dinosaur has been found entombed in amber, an unprecedented discovery that has blown away scientists.

Xing Lida, a Chinese paleontologist found the specimen, the size of a dried apricot, at an amber market in northern Myanmar near the Chinese border.
The remarkable piece was destined to end up as a curiosity or piece of jewelry, with Burmese traders believing a plant fragment was trapped inside.
“I realized that the content was a vertebrate, probably theropod, rather than any plant,” Xing told CNN.

ETA: Just a reminder, the largest church in Utah (also the largest church in my city as well) will excommunicate you if you get into a same-sex marriage. Moreover, that church will not allow children whose parent (note this) is in a same-sex relationship to be blessed or baptized until they are 18. They really want to play this stupid game? Listen Conservatives, Civil Rights was never about Democrat versus Republican. It was about conservatives like yourselves who insisted that the feds shouldn’t be involved in civil rights. Gee what does that remind me of? And liberals who thought they should. Again, gee what does that remind you of? Yes, the Dixiecrats were Democrats but it’s also true that your precious Reagan and Nixon made them Republican voters for good on the presidential level.

It’s almost like party ideologies don’t change over time. The Republicans if they were serious about civil rights in 1964 never would have nominated Goldwater, they never would have condoned the Southern Strategies of Nixon and Reagan, having Atwater use his tactics for GHW Bush, and of course Trumpism.

Things that were true and are meaningless in politics today:
1. We were a British colony.
2. Virginia had a larger population than New York.
3. Iowa sent the highest percentage of it’s population to fight for the North in the Civil War.
4. Democrats were the party of slavery.
5. Republicans were the party of abolitionists.
6. Ronald Reagan was governor of California.

The sad thing is they think they’re really “schooling those ignorant liberals.” I appreciate the Republicans that supported Civil Rights. It’s why his associating with McCarthyism aside, I don’t mind pre 1968 Nixon that much and think Eisenhower was a good President but the thing is the party’s been on a downward spiral on civil rights ever since 1960 and the Dems have progressively gotten better.

I was ankle deep in ash. My truck and clothes stink of burnt everything. The landscape makes one want to weep. Observing the many vultures, well you know the hills have many animals that were killed by the fire. I went by Padilla ranch where 30 horses died in circumstances best left un-described. I really can’t say I’m surprised by a paper that broke out their pon-poms and served as a cheerleader for the Iraq War until the shine wore off and public opinion soured. Earlier this year, when I was listening to the BBC World Service, they had on a presenter from NASA that talked about the Challenger disaster about the “Normalization of deviance”.

I hunted that NASA PowerPoint down.

And to me, it’s just as applicable to our political discourse and society today - and, sad to say, blood may have to be shed to end this deviance in our culture.

I’m not really surprised. The Gray Lady has had a decades-long hate-on for the Clintons, which made them perfect targets for the Russian ratfucking that went on. I suspect some in the management have realized this…and decided that best thing to do is to sink further into denial. Hence their work to convince themselves and the public that Trump’s victory was some sort of watershed moment for the “working class” and “economic anxiety.”

They are also poorly run, take hours, and therefore plenty of people don’t bother showing up for them.
