Alabama Apocalypse: The Jones-Moore Open Thread

If you’re really going to drag me kicking and screaming into acknowledging reality, Roy Moore is probably going to beat Doug Jones for the US Senate tonight in Alabama.

Because, hey. It’s Alabama. It’s not like there isn’t some history behind this.

And as I write, Moore is leading 54-44 with 26% of the vote counted. So be prepared to acknowledge reality. But another aspect of that reality is that is Moore wins, the Republican Party will be forever associated with a child molester.

In the meantime, here’s an open thread to keep up with the Alabama Apocalypse, while hoping for an upset that probably won’t come.

The reddest counties are coming in fast. Birmingham/Jefferson County still has only a quarter of its precincts in. Even less from Montgomery and Huntsville. Those will be good for Jones.

It’s not over yet - but neither is it over yet. There are clearly sane people to be found in Alabama. We’ll see if there are enough of them.

One of the things I hate about cable news - even Rachel tonight, and especially Steve Kornacki doing his map-savant bit over in the corner with her - is that they are NEVER good at the kind of “which precincts aren’t in yet, how many votes will they deliver, and for whom” analysis that the NYT stats geeks excel at.

And the numbers Rachel is using are lagging way behind the NYT numbers, too.

Nope. I refuse to be disappointed.

Jones is doing better than Hillary did in many of the white Alabama counties and Jones is closer to Moore in many of the same areas that Moore dominated bigly in the past.

I’d be disappointed if Jones got stomped by the usual numbers you see in Alabama. That doesn’t appear to be the case.

And as I said earlier…the Republican now have a different issue. Do they keep him and look bad nationally or do they boot him and piss of those that hate McConnell and the other “established” GOP members.

But this also adds to the uncertainty. Our simulations are really bullish on Jones in Montgomery/Birmingham. But the huge variance in whether Jones/Moore is overperforming means that it’s possible this is way off.

My guess: we won’t be confident until we get one of these big metropolitan counties to wrap up. Until then, metro turnout and extent of Jones strength a mystery. But underlying fact is that Jones is, on average, doing what he needs so far.

There is a really interesting disconnect between the networks, which focus on moment-to-moment vote totals, and the Upshot model, which is a projection.

Different audiences are being given completely different impressions of the current state of the count.

Finger, eyes and toes crossed—don’t want to jinx it.

A Jones win would be a spectacular end to a pretty rewarding day. Went to the Christmas party for clients at our women’s shelter/family justice center. It was phenomenal. A room with gifts for the kids to shop for their moms. A room where they could make crafts/gift bags and decorate them. A room with games and prizes for the kids. A gigantic room with a potluck buffet of main courses and desserts and candy and sweets. A gathering room, where Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance. Every room decorated to the max.

The sweetest kids (and the moms as well) and a group of volunteers who give you back faith in humanity. It was so heartwarming to see these families getting to kick back and actually have fun in a safe, protected environment.

I brought food, bought gifts, wrapping paper, gift bags etc. etc. and also put 4 Target gift cards into the mix for them to give to clients. I love this organization. Every single person I’ve met there is outstanding.

Now if Alabama does right by Jones, it will be the best day I’ve had since election day last year. (Oh, and thanks to the peeps who have been touting Bakari Sellers—he’s the real deal and the future.)

They’d keep Sessions’ seat and do so in such a fashion that they could allay talk that the political winds were against them and picking up speed. Many probably expected to wake up tomorrow to headlines about how Moore overcame the allegations to win in exactly the fashion that Republicans have been winning that seat for ages.

Instead, tonight is just fuel on the fire. Tomorrow begins the Great Accounting, and the Long Knives won’t be far behind.

It is a wonderful evening, but until all votes are counted, I won’t feel really secure. We have to remember Doug Jones did not win just because he was a terrific candidate; that isn’t sufficient for a Democrat in a deep red state; it’s because Moore was an outstandingly terrible candidate and despite all his outrageous flaws, he would likely have won if there weren’t the allegations of his stalking teenage girls.

Thank you Deb. And especial thanks to the African American community for coming out in full force. There were still people who couldn’t vote because of Alabama voter suppression. We need to make sure that everyone who is American can vote and stop the tide of voter suppression throughout the country.

And maybe the Franken sacrifice actually helped by providing a significant distinction between Democrats who do not support “predators” and a party that voted for a pedophile for the Senate and a predator for President.

This is pretty serious. These were additional restrictions put in two months AFTER Hastert got out of prison and is on probation. He can’t be in the same room with minors unless he’s got an adult minder there who has been informed of Hastert’s conviction (which was for structuring, a variety of money laundering) AND has been approved by the federal probation office AND the person treating Hastert for his sex offender treatment. I have to wonder what was in the sealed report handed over to the judge that caused the judge to put that kind of restriction into place.
