A “Starbucks cub”??

Polar bear?
Christmas bear?
Pedo bear? *

*most likely in Republican areas in the South….

ADD: I just went to Starbucks’ site to check out their Holiday cup. Man, THIS is what the wingers are getting het up about??

When they say they “want to put Christ back in Christmas”, I don’t think they mean it like it usually applies, i.e. “Jesus Christ! What is wrong with these idiots??!!”

In less entertaining news, apparently the Republicans are looking to shutdown the Congressional House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into things Trump related.

For the record, my guess is that Devin Nunes is going to be either one of the first people in Congress charged, or have the more serious charges filed against him.

His current behaviour, and his behaviour back in March (theguardian.com) are just not those of an innocent person

I’m not sure if school is out yet where you are, but it might be worth a phone call to one of the schools close to you and ask if there’s a kid in need that you could help. I suspect this goes on a lot more than we realize. Teachers see a lot that we never hear about, it can’t hurt to ask.

“…Under local jury procedures, the court draws prospective jurors exclusively from urban counties surrounding Wichita, where the trial is scheduled to take place. Defense attorneys say that’s unfair to the trio, whose alleged crimes occurred in western Kansas.

According to the filing, voter data showed that Trump beat Clinton by about 28 percentage points in the Wichita-Hutchinson jury division, from which the court will summon prospective jurors for the men’s trial. By contrast, defense attorneys wrote, Trump beat Clinton by roughly 55 percentage points in the Dodge City jury division, a 28-county region whose citizens are excluded from serving on federal trial juries in Wichita.

I’d say that gives them enough of an edge.

re: #35 A Mom Anon

Speaking on CNN on Sunday, Jones emphasized he has no interest in focusing on what reporter Jake Tapper referred to as the “horrific” allegations of sexual assault against President Donald Trump. “Those allegations were made before the election. So people had an opportunity to judge before that election,” Jones said in the interview. “I think we need to move on and not get distracted by those issues. Let’s get on with the real issues that are facing people of this country right now.”

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), who campaigned for Jones in Alabama during the special Senate election, has called for Trump to resign over the multiple allegations of assault and harassment made against the president. When asked whether he supports Booker’s call, Jones responded, “I don’t think the president ought to resign at this point.” The Alabama Democrat said he doesn’t believe Trump, who has admitted to sexually assaulting women, should face the same fate as Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), who recently announced his intention to resign amidst multiple allegations by women of sexual harassment.

Trump was elected president “with those allegations at front and center,” Jones said.

Scott van Zyl disappeared last week after he went on a hunting safari in Zimbabwe. Accompanied by a pack of dogs and a Zimbabwean tracker, the professional hunter who organises trips for foreign clients is thought to have been eaten by crocodiles on the bank of the Limpopo River.

I always, and I mean ALWAYS get a catch in my throat when I hear someone even imply that sexual assault is not important to address. It isn’t the only battle and there are other issues that can be linked back to why sexual assault is as prevalent as it is. It fucking destroys people, snuffs out potential (and lives, often by suicide and/or addiction) and leads to mental health issues in many survivors. We are a big and diverse group of humans and we need to come together and work on our shit. I am saying sexual assault ain’t our only problem, and we can work on a lot of issues if we can figure out how not to peck each other to pieces over shit like this.

I think what would help here is for a coalition of abuse survivors to approach Doug Jones and ask for some time to talk with him about things he could support that would help. And maybe sensitize him to this problem. I do not think for a minute he’s a scumbag. I think he’s looking at a LOT of shit he’s gotta try to get done and maybe, to him, this doesn’t look as overwhelming as grinding poverty or a shitty and badly underfunded educational system or a failing healthcare system or crumbling infrastructure , and yes sexual assault, and income inequality and shitty banking practices, and so on and forever. So it is our job to educate him and ask for his help where he has the power to make a big impact. Deal with his team and him, figure shit out. That is how it’s supposed to work and if the people don’t make it work, it isn’t going to. Especially with all the shitty representation we have now.

I honestly don’t have an issue with people ripping Doug Jones for his comments. Calling sexual misconduct by powerful men a distraction from real issues is a shit thing to do on his part considering how anger over powerful men like Roy Moore and Donald Trump sexually abusing women basically tipped the election in his favor. I know a red state Democrat like Jones will occasionally disappoint us, but could he have at least waited until after he gets seated in the Senate?

What is grinding me over his statement is that WOMEN put his ass over the top to win the election. And then his first shot outa the gate says we’re a distraction and it’s time to deal with some actually important issues, using the exact same phrasing as any GOPer. He added to it with saying hey, voters put Trump in office anyway so it’s not an issue for him NOW.

Yeah, I think he stuck his foot in it big and lost a lot of respect he had walking in that door. Still glad he won and it takes nothing from the Democratic party that won that seat. It remains an amazing and historical win that should be celebrated bigly.

He is now a US Senator, and he needs to be held accountable, but we have got to decide what we want and what his role is, realistically, to fix it. Legislatively and public service wise, what do we want him to do? Yell at him and be pissed? Sure! I think the anger is deserved, he stepped in it. Legislatively and public service wise, what do we want him to do? Yell at him and be pissed? Sure! I think the anger is deserved, he stepped in it. But without a follow up to make sure this shit doesn’t happen anymore it’s just anger and it fixes nothing for survivors or possible future victims.

I don’t think there is anything to do about it. I just hope he pays attention to the legitimate anger his comments have generated and learns to represent the party in a considerably less tone deaf way.

“I think what would help here is for a coalition of abuse survivors to approach Doug Jones and ask for some time to talk with him about things he could support that would help.”

Yes, instead of demonizing Jones, let’s work with him to get him to be more sensitive to the need of abuse survivors and sexual harassment in general. I don’t get why anyone on our side feels that tearing him down is productive.

I may be in the minority here, but it sure looks to me like Jones got a “gotcha” question and didn’t want to answer it, which is understandable. I think my position, if I were coming from where he’s coming from, would be similar - “let me get to DC and start working on the issues that affect Alabama.”

Wasn’t this a big part of what took Franken down so fast - the media starting a running scorecard of “which Democrats are calling on him to resign right this minute?” and not giving Dems any oxygen to discuss any other issue?

Keely Smith passed away today yesterday. She was the perfect foil for Louis Prima.

Keely Smith, the iconic jazz and pop vocalist who achieved success as both a solo artist and with her musical partnership with first husband Louis Prima, died on Dec. 16 in Palm Springs.

She was 89.

The singer was “under physicians’ care at the time of her passing from apparent heart failure,” according to publicist Bob Merlis.

Smith was a Grammy-winning talent who gained much attention when as a teenager she got the job as the “girl singer” in Prima’s band in 1948.

She married Prima in 1953 and achieved success together throughout the entertainment business, starring in stage, television and movies and releasing hit records.

They’d win a Grammy in 1959 — the first year the awards were handed out — for best pop vocal performance by a duo or group for their smash “That Old Black Magic,” which remained on the charts for 18 weeks

(If you’d asked me, I’d have told you I thought she passed away long ago. RIP, Miss Keely.)

I read it to say that DT’s actions shouldn’t be an issue (e.g. “We knew Bill Clinton was a horn dog when we elected him”), not that harassment wasn’t an issue. I don’t agree, but I also don’t think we’re being dismissed.

If Trump is unpopular, why do NFL Stadiums look like this? If Liberalism is popular, why do NFL Stadiums look like this?

4:05 PM - Dec 17, 2017

Someone let the twit Mitchell know that is Cleveland stadium.

The picture is most likely at or near the end of another Browns loss in a no-win season. Even as bad as the Browns are, the stadium was probably fuller at the start of the game.

If the franchise is winning it would be full. Browns fans are the best and very dedicated, they show up as miserable as the team has been.

I hadn’t intended to get into to this to this degree but since we’re here…

My 3 girlfriends and I talked about this over dinner the other night. Our ages ranged from 58 to 73. One is a surgical nurse, one a retired corporate attorney, one an office manager, and I am a retired wildlife biologist/professor. Three of the 4 of us (easy to guess which 3) put up with harassment bullshit throughout our careers. What we all cynically agreed upon was that we have few illusions that this is about protecting women and all about using us and our experiences as weapons to take down powerful men. That said we all hoped that the fallout would be beneficial in the long run to change our culture for the better.

The Alabama election was very much centered on this issue and it drove women to the polls. I suspect a majority of the write in votes, that certainly tipped the election, were Republican women. Then today, less than a week later, the guy elected by those women says the issue is a “distraction” and it’s now time to move on to the important stuff. My first thought was “yup, there it is.” Surprised? Not really. Disappointed? Yes.

You know what? With McCain not voting (and I share in the sympathies for his family; glioblastoma is one sucky way to go), if there’s any wedge at all to get Corker worked up, I’m going to be as optimistic as I can possibly be that this house of cards could still come down on the horrible people who crafted it.

We’re starting off 51-48 against us with McCain’s absence, right? If Corker were to flip back, that makes it 50-49…and at that point does Collins start to rethink her stance? Or does Rand Paul make a last-minute stink? (And if it goes to 49-50 against, there’s nothing Pence can do to save it.)

It really wouldn’t take much, especially if something drops from the transition emails early in the week.

Well, I’m not, anyway. Whatever happened, happened in 1999 and was apparently dealt with back then.

He may be a blowhard and a lousy interviewer and a totally shameless self-promoter, but his heart usually seems to be in the right place, and without his show leading the way back in the 90s, who knows if MSNBC would ever have evolved to give us Keith and Rachel and Chris and Lawrence and Joy? And he manages to get some fairly powerful Rs to appear and face questions when they wouldn’t show up on any of the other shows later in primetime at all.
