So. This is happening tonight on Twitter: trying to post a link to @TomSteyer’s “Need to Impeach” website, which calls for the impeachment of Donald Trump, results in a warning message from Twitter — and the link is not posted.

His nextgen climate ads during the election and the needtoimpeach site all strike me as primarily geared towards raising Tom’s public stature and helping him build a mailing list for a likely 2018 run at becoming Governor of California. I’m sure he wants Feinstein’s Senate seat more but her decision to run for re-election makes that a harder race for him to win.

Still, Twitter’s action here seems just as cynical and/or the product of automated abuse by right wingers. Twitter probably doesn’t like the idea of a billionaire like Steyer using their platform as part of his ad campaign without paying for it.

I don’t understand how taking a public stand on issues is somehow a bad thing to raise your public profile if you want to run for office. You kind of need a public profile if you want to do that.

As for giving people E-mail addresses, the default assumption is they are building an E-mail list. Once you give away your address, you no longer have control over it.

Yes, it’s almost certainly because of a campaign to mass-report the site as spam. And this reveals a serious problem in Twitter’s attempt to use automated systems to handle complaints like this - they’re way too easy for malicious groups to exploit.

A problem that anyone could have predicted.

goddamnedfrank, I can agree with your cynicism regarding the possible motives of Tom Steyer. You are likely very right. To that end, would it change your opinion of him if he DOES declare a run for a political office of some sort? I think he’s doing a valuable thing by running these ads. It does run in red places where people may not be aware of the strong opposition to Trump. My own personal criticism is that his schtick plays to the people who are looking for someone to “save” us. The ones who bitch a lot, but don’t bother to vote. Or call their Congresscritters to vent their displeasure. Thus setting up a path for the liberal version of authoritarianism.
On the up and happy side here…..we are headed for SoCal tomorrow morning. We are taking the Grandkids to Disneyland. It should be fun, even if I don’t do amusement park rides and I hate crowds. Just keeping up with the kiddos will be a challenge. I myself have not been to DL since I was three. But I do have some memories, so it’ll be interesting to see if the deja vu feeling kicks in.

I’m not saying the ads have no value at all. I’m saying that their comparative value strikes me as rather low next to doing things that directly combat voter suppression like helping people get qualifying photo id, registered to vote, signing them up for absentee ballots or making sure they can physically get to the polls.

Because if there is one thing I’ve learned over the last couple years it’s that trying to educate right wingers is largely futile. Being directly confronted with evidence that they’re wrong only causes them to dig in further. And the absolute last thing that is ever going to motivate them towards introspection is some California billionaire on TV telling them their shit stinks.

Here’s the problem for them: Mueller is not strictly confined to a specific time period or event, the directives he operates under give him authority to go wherever the evidence takes him.

Now Republicans loved that idea when they thought it might mean he’d go after Hillary or Obama. But they’re getting scared shitless now because they’ve realized he interprets it as permitting him to look at the transition period as well. And it was likely in that period, when Trump felt unfettered by the campaign but not yet in the White House, to try to start cashing in on his “victory.”

Too bad for them Mr. Mueller’s remit specifically allows him to go after other crimes uncovered during the course of his investigation.

My basic refrain the past few years it that America is going through an existential crisis, more specifically, many Americans are going through existential crises because old-fashioned belief systems are failing them in the 21st century.

Mostly this had to do with religion, but there are beliefs that are not so sectarian too.

In light of this, what we must do is just plow forward, make our case, and take stands.

Ultimately humans try to resolve their own crises through either 1) escape, or 2) acceptance. The latter one is the one that keeps from spiraling downwards.

FOX Radio, Free Republic, Christian Post, End Times Headlines, and many other right-wing and religious Websites are attacking the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FOX Radio called it an attack by atheists) over three state senators in Arizona.

The issue is the three senators have volunteered for years as bell ringers for the Salvation Army. State Senator George Logan claims he received a letter from FFRF asking he cease and desist his voluntary time with the Salvation Army. The other two state senators said they received no such letters.

FFRF itself does not have anything on sending a letter to Senator Logan or anyone else about volunteering for the Salvation Army. (The last article their Website had was last year when Target banned solicitation on its properties and wingnuts spun it as an attack on the Salvation Army.)

They have their own publishing and broadcasting outlets, bringing us such luminaries as David Barton and Dinesh D’Useless, and benefactors with deep pockets, such as the Kochs and the Mercers. I would argue they’d be perfectly OK with the system of government Putin has created, so long as their brand of Christianity takes the role of state church.

The way the Russian propaganda machine has targeted the White Helmets is a neat case study in the prevailing information wars. It exposes just how rumours, conspiracy theories and half-truths bubble to the top of YouTube, Google and Twitter search algorithms.

I got about halfway into the Crown, kinda lost interest, but it is a compelling and well done series about people who live lavishly off other people’s money without returning any commensurate value in personal service in exchange.

A fair point, but in many way the Crown serves as a symbol of Great Britain in a more concrete way than, say, the US Constitution or the American flag. I’m not a monarchist by any means, but I can see how the institution serves a purpose. Whether it deserves to be so exceedingly rich while serving is a major drawback. OTOH the Royal Family has gradually become more “common” since Elizabeth II was enthroned. Her grandchildren (Diana’s kids) will be much more approachable as people than Liz was.

They planned this at local levels and state and federal levels simultaneously and that is why we have a wing nut infestation at every level of government and media today. This crap ruins families. There was a time period when my son was 6 to 16 that they didn’t speak to us. Why? Because I own books about pagan religions. Mom saw those and seriously decided our house was some portal to evil. So, for TEN YEARS they didn’t talk to us and missed a huge part of their only grandson’s life. And now they realize that the reason my son doesn’t talk to them much is because they pushed us away over bullshit. To their credit, they always pushed me to read and think critically and be smart, but not so much with my two siblings, both younger than I. But their religion and politics haven’t changed and it’s a wedge that helped break our family apart. Now why is it I don’t go to church again? Can’t imagine why…..

Having been to Amway (and other MLM meetings), I can say they are not unlike revival meetings, with God and Jesus being replaced with money and success. All you need to do is push the products — and membership schemes — on your family and friends, which is essentially proselytizing. As with any religion, MLMers believe they have All the Answers, and want everyone else to see the light. Obviously, there is lot of overlap with prosperity gospel sects and notions of “poor people are poor because they don’t work hard enough.”

Meanwhile:

Another Trump ally similarly warns that Trump’s lawyers are playing a dangerous game by buttering him up with happy talk about the Mueller probe ending shortly.

“I’ve known him long enough to know that disappointing him is a problem and they’ve built up a level of expectations for him that are unrealistic,” the source said. “[They’ve] lulled him into a false sense of security.”

So his lawyers are buttering him up with false promises of exoneration, which will lead him to do a lot of stupid shit when he realizes they’re a crock. Yeah, that sounds about right.

Your ships don’t look like floating radio shacks when (for example) the same antenna can do multiple tasks.

Looked up my last name (not a common name) and found that my mother wrote 5 times and each was about 3 pages long going into great detail why net neutrality should stay. Oh mom…. bet you didn’t think these items would be online.

I found the exact same comments against NN under both my wife’s and my mother’s names, though from two different states than where we live.

Nick’s 3 year old warning is more timely, and more urgent, than ever. The alarming trends he saw in 2014 have gone into massive overdrive under the Trump administration.

But the problem isn’t that we have inequality. Some inequality is intrinsic to any high-functioning capitalist economy. The problem is that inequality is at historically high levels and getting worse every day. Our country is rapidly becoming less a capitalist society and more a feudal society. Unless our policies change dramatically, the middle class will disappear, and we will be back to late 18th-century France. Before the revolution.

And so I have a message for my fellow filthy rich, for all of us who live in our gated bubble worlds: Wake up, people. It won’t last.

If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn’t eventually come out. You show me a highly unequal society, and I will show you a police state. Or an uprising. There are no counterexamples. None. It’s not if, it’s when.

IMO I think it’s becoming obviously clear that the Republicans know they are toast in 2018. Probably to the point of not having a majority in either chamber. However, they will retain enough numbers in the Senate that they can filibuster everything.

So they want to pass this wealth transfer bill for their corporate masters knowing that in the 2018, even in the minority, the Democrats won’t be able to pass their own version of a tax bill because of the filibuster as well as Trump. And in the meantime, since Americans are largely dumb and ignorant about economics and have the memory of a fruit fly, the Republicans will be able to get their messaging out about Democrats wanting to raise taxes and then take back the Senate and keep the White House in 2020. And if the economy tanks between 2018-2020 we know who will get the blame and, thus, ensuring a better chance in 2020 for Republicans.

More to the point - we know how Corker will benefit because we can see his tax return.

It is still a mystery as to how Cheeto will benefit…. for now, all we can do is guess.

I’d be all for a law that says a lawmaker or president cannot take advantage of the provisions of a tax bill they’ve voted for or signed. Especially without disclosing their own returns.
