Tonight, Twitter Is Blocking Users From Posting Links to Tom Steyer’s “Need to Impeach” Site

Politics • Views: 47,491

So. This is happening tonight on Twitter: trying to post a link to @TomSteyer’s “Need to Impeach” website, which calls for the impeachment of Donald Trump, results in a warning message from Twitter — and the link is not posted.

No word yet from anyone at Twitter about why this is happening, but one possibility is that this link has been mass-reported as spam by pro-Trump trolls. We’ll update if more information becomes available.

UPDATE at 12/17/17 8:10:17 pm by Charles Johnson

Still no word from Twitter, but the link can now be posted.

Jim Wright (@Stonekettle) gets time out from Facebook from time to time because of mass reporting by Trumpkins. I wouldn’t put it past Trumpkin trolls and Russian bots to do something like this.

One of those “dust in my eye” stories:

Jia Sarnicola and Zuri Copeland are 4 -year-old preschoolers from Miami.

They implore their moms to dress them in matching outfits. They insist they are not just best friends. Not even sisters. They insist that they are twins.

Jia’s birthday is June 3rd and Zuri is June 5th. Close enough for them to consider that the same time.

They shared a birthday party, when other children told them that because of their skin color, they couldn’t be twins.

The girls started to cry. And then Jia replied, “You don’t know anything.

We are both 4. We are the same height. We have the same birthday…

…and we share the same soul.”

Honestly I don’t trust Steyer at all. His nextgen climate ads during the election and the needtoimpeach site all strike me as primarily geared towards raising Tom’s public stature and helping him build a mailing list for a likely 2018 run at becoming Governor of California. I’m sure he wants Feinstein’s Senate seat more but her decision to run for re-election makes that a harder race for him to win.

Still, Twitter’s action here seems just as cynical and/or the product of automated abuse by right wingers. Twitter probably doesn’t like the idea of a billionaire like Steyer using their platform as part of his ad campaign without paying for it.

I don’t understand how taking a public stand on issues is somehow a bad thing to raise your public profile if you want to run for office. You kind of need a public profile if you want to do that.

As for giving people E-mail addresses, the default assumption is they are building an E-mail list. Once you give away your address, you no longer have control over it.

Yes, it’s almost certainly because of a campaign to mass-report the site as spam. And this reveals a serious problem in Twitter’s attempt to use automated systems to handle complaints like this - they’re way too easy for malicious groups to exploit.

A problem that anyone could have predicted.

Well, that could be true too. I would trade Stayer in a second for my hedge-fund governor.

The way our political system is set up you pretty much have to be rich to run for any office above a county commission.

Steyer reminds me of Pritzker in Illinois. You can’t escape Pritzker’s ads for governor; they are effective and they are everywhere. It almost appears as though he is the only Democrat in the race — although there are two other high profile candidates Daniel Biss and Chris Kennedy. Pritzker’s advantage is that he is the only Democratic billionaire in the competition.

goddamnedfrank, I can agree with your cynicism regarding the possible motives of Tom Steyer. You are likely very right. To that end, would it change your opinion of him if he DOES declare a run for a political office of some sort? I think he’s doing a valuable thing by running these ads. It does run in red places where people may not be aware of the strong opposition to Trump. My own personal criticism is that his schtick plays to the people who are looking for someone to “save” us. The ones who bitch a lot, but don’t bother to vote. Or call their Congresscritters to vent their displeasure. Thus setting up a path for the liberal version of authoritarianism.
On the up and happy side here…..we are headed for SoCal tomorrow morning. We are taking the Grandkids to Disneyland. It should be fun, even if I don’t do amusement park rides and I hate crowds. Just keeping up with the kiddos will be a challenge. I myself have not been to DL since I was three. But I do have some memories, so it’ll be interesting to see if the deja vu feeling kicks in.

re: #42 Amalthea’s Shadow

I’m not saying the ads have no value at all. I’m saying that their comparative value strikes me as rather low next to doing things that directly combat voter suppression like helping people get qualifying photo id, registered to vote, signing them up for absentee ballots or making sure they can physically get to the polls.

Because if there is one thing I’ve learned over the last couple years it’s that trying to educate right wingers is largely futile. Being directly confronted with evidence that they’re wrong only causes them to dig in further. And the absolute last thing that is ever going to motivate them towards introspection is some California billionaire on TV telling them their shit stinks.

Among other things there’s probably evidence of egregious emoluments clause violations in those emails, efforts to get foreign dignitaries to stay in the DC hotel. That’s the kind of flagrantly corrupt shit that Trump’s lawyers would’ve definitely “vetted” out, arguing that it doesn’t concretely involve Russia.

And I strongly suspect that’s one of the many things that Mueller has found, considering the tone of the squealing from the Fox crowd and Trump’s lawyers that he has gone “outside the scope” of the investigation. Here’s the problem for them: Mueller is not strictly confined to a specific time period or event, the directives he operates under give him authority to go wherever the evidence takes him.

Now Republicans loved that idea when they thought it might mean he’d go after Hillary or Obama. But they’re getting scared shitless now because they’ve realized he interprets it as permitting him to look at the transition period as well. And it was likely in that period, when Trump felt unfettered by the campaign but not yet in the White House, to try to start cashing in on his “victory.”

Too bad for them Mr. Mueller’s remit specifically allows him to go after other crimes uncovered during the course of his investigation.

That’s sort of like saying “Well, the cops were called because we had a loud party, but they can’t investigate the murder after they found a body on our floor.”

They’re pretty much throwing any thing they can at the wall. Much of it isn’t for the court (but if the court buys an argument the better for them). It’s for the Wingnut Media to try to spin up conservatives into believing the government is out to get them, like Saint Reagan promised.

Gaslighting an entire population. Next up: Christmas did not exist until Trump was elected. He also created in a flash on Dec. 1 every single Christmas song, movie, custom, TV special, decoration, greeting card, and food and drink item. Santa, however, was arrested and deported for not having a valid passport or visa, illegally crossing into US airspace, not having a valid pilot’s license, evading customs duties, smuggling exotic animals without a permit, and suspected serial B&E incidents. His list of naughty and nice people was confiscated and shared with Russian intelligence.

Of course, we don’t know what the host of the Comedy Central show cut out (people who made reasonable answers for example).

That said, the clip is a good example of the Keyes Constant (or crazification factor).

I can easily believe there are people who will believe beyond any doubt that no one was allowed to say “Merry Christmas” before Trump took office. They will eventually convince others, and soon a sizable minority will take it as a True Fack™ that saying “Merry Christmas” was outlawed under the Obama administration.

They will attribute the existence of pre-2017 Merry Christmas items to the Mandela effect.

My basic refrain the past few years it that America is going through an existential crisis, more specifically, many Americans are going through existential crises because old-fashioned belief systems are failing them in the 21st century.

Mostly this had to do with religion, but there are beliefs that are not so sectarian too.

In light of this, what we must do is just plow forward, make our case, and take stands.

Ultimately humans try to resolve their own crises through either 1) escape, or 2) acceptance. The latter one is the one that keeps from spiraling downwards.

FOX Radio, Free Republic, Christian Post, End Times Headlines, and many other right-wing and religious Websites are attacking the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FOX Radio called it an attack by atheists) over three state senators in Arizona.

The issue is the three senators have volunteered for years as bell ringers for the Salvation Army. State Senator George Logan claims he received a letter from FFRF asking he cease and desist his voluntary time with the Salvation Army. The other two state senators said they received no such letters.

FFRF itself does not have anything on sending a letter to Senator Logan or anyone else about volunteering for the Salvation Army. (The last article their Website had was last year when Target banned solicitation on its properties and wingnuts spun it as an attack on the Salvation Army.)

Todd Starnes FOX Radio segment:

Lawmakers Vow to Ring Salvation Army Bells in Defiance of Atheists

Anymouse 🌹  Dec 18, 2017 • 1:26:59am

To the best of my knowledge, the Freedom from Religion Foundation (which is made up of a majority of Christians, not atheists) doesn’t give a flip what a politician does on his own time, as long as it’s legal.

Bell ringing for the Salvation Army is legal.

Wingnuts are trying to spin this as we evil atheists are trying to trample all over their religious rights.

Maybe we need to get our own radio network. Persecuting the overwhelming majority of the nation is hard without your own propaganda network.

Conservatives have spent a long time creating that precise problem with education. They then went after news media. The leaders disdain critical thinking (see the former Texas GOP platform) equating it to rebelling against parents.

This has been a long time in the making. Conservatives have created in essence a “lost generation,” which can’t think for itself; can’t tell what’s true, what’s false, and what’s opinion; and is thus easily lead by whatever they’re told to do.

The Dominionist movement wants dominion over the “Seven Mountains” of arts and entertainment, business, education, family, government, media, and religion. They have made inroads in all of them, most importantly government (IMO). They start with local elections, such as school boards, and inexorably work their way up the political food chain. They have their own publishing and broadcasting outlets, bringing us such luminaries as David Barton and Dinesh D’Useless, and benefactors with deep pockets, such as the Kochs and the Mercers. I would argue they’d be perfectly OK with the system of government Putin has created, so long as their brand of Christianity takes the role of state church.

How the Russians smeared the White Helmet rescue workers of Syria.

theguardian.com

The White Helmets, officially known as the Syria Civil Defence, is a humanitarian organisation made up of 3,400 volunteers - former teachers, engineers, tailors and firefighters - who rush to pull people from the rubble when bombs rain down on Syrian civilians. They’ve been credited with saving thousands of civilians during the country’s continuing civil war.

They have also exposed, through first-hand video footage, war crimes including a chemical attack in April. Their work was the subject of an Oscar-winning Netflix documentary and the recipient of two Nobel peace prize nominations.

In spite of this positive international recognition, there’s a counter-narrative pushed by a vocal network of individuals who write for alternative news sites countering the “MSM agenda”. Their views align with the positions of Syria and Russia and attract an enormous online audience, amplified by high-profile alt-right personalities, appearances on Russian state TV and an army of Twitter bots.

The way the Russian propaganda machine has targeted the White Helmets is a neat case study in the prevailing information wars. It exposes just how rumours, conspiracy theories and half-truths bubble to the top of YouTube, Google and Twitter search algorithms.

A fair point, but in many way the Crown serves as a symbol of Great Britain in a more concrete way than, say, the US Constitution or the American flag. I’m not a monarchist by any means, but I can see how the institution serves a purpose. Whether it deserves to be so exceedingly rich while serving is a major drawback. OTOH the Royal Family has gradually become more “common” since Elizabeth II was enthroned. Her grandchildren (Diana’s kids) will be much more approachable as people than Liz was.

They should be privatized. Make them work for a living, and if they go bankrupt, they can be replaced by another line of the family with more appeal.

My father in law is a British Tory and he used to complain about the rise of an established welfare class in Britain, at which point I noted that the Royal Family has been living off the public dole for centuries.

So, for TEN YEARS they didn’t talk to us and missed a huge part of their only grandson’s life. And now they realize that the reason my son doesn’t talk to them much is because they pushed us away over bullshit. To their credit, they always pushed me to read and think critically and be smart, but not so much with my two siblings, both younger than I. But their religion and politics haven’t changed and it’s a wedge that helped break our family apart. Now why is it I don’t go to church again? Can’t imagine why…..

Having been to Amway (and other MLM meetings), I can say they are not unlike revival meetings, with God and Jesus being replaced with money and success. All you need to do is push the products — and membership schemes — on your family and friends, which is essentially proselytizing. As with any religion, MLMers believe they have All the Answers, and want everyone else to see the light. Obviously, there is lot of overlap with prosperity gospel sects and notions of “poor people are poor because they don’t work hard enough.”

Somewhere in my old photos is a picture of me and my brother(my sister wasn’t born yet) standing in front of my parents’ brand new van with a custom painted Amway logo, my parents’ name and phone number. We were not allowed to use or buy a product outside of Amway unless Amway didn’t make it. Our garage was full of the stuff and my dad had a second phone line installed in the office he made in the garage. Fun times.

Hoarse Whisperer speculates that the transition team believes that they’re getting the same deal re emails as Clinton got - the ability to go through them all and decide which ones they want to withhold.

The only hitch there is that when Clinton made the deal to turn over emails, she wasn’t under any obligation to turn over any of them, but did so as a gesture of cooperation. Her emails weren’t actually part of any investigation.

Sherk will trigger a mass exodus of Federal employees which is what the RepubliKKKlan Party wants. Already Trump is demoralizing folks at the office I work at. New hires are already forced to pay more into retirement than those hired before 2015. That’s caused several of them to already leave us. Others were planning to retire in a couple years but they’re accelerating those plans to get out before Trump steals their pensions. We’ve already gotten a jolt from increased health insurance premiums that take effect in January.

And don’t forget the holiday jitters we’re having hoping that we aren’t furloughed on Friday!

New Yorker article on the Indivisible contribution to the Roy Moore defeat:

In the other three counties where it knocked on doors, made calls, and sent the majority of its texts—Houston, Dale, and Henry—the G.O.P.’s winning margins shrank by more than twenty points. Steve Bannon, speaking on a Breitbart radio program after Jones defeated Roy Moore, whom Bannon repeatedly stumped for, acknowledged the effectiveness of the collective progressive ground game. Bannon told Breitbart’s editor-in-chief, Alex Marlow, “You’ve gotta give the devil its due.”

Need a laugh this morning? Behold:

CNN reports that Trump has recently been boasting to allies that the Russia probe will be over very shortly, and that Mueller will personally exonerate him. The president believes this, CNN’s sources say, because his attorneys have tried to manage him by telling him that he faces no real danger from the probe.

This is from the same guy who (to this day) insists Comey totally cleared him even though he now insists he fired the man because of moral at the FBI.

Meanwhile:

One Trump ally tells CNN that the president will likely have a “meltdown” after months go by without an exoneration letter, after which “he’ll try and fire Mueller and then be impeached.”

Another Trump ally similarly warns that Trump’s lawyers are playing a dangerous game by buttering him up with happy talk about the Mueller probe ending shortly.

“I’ve known him long enough to know that disappointing him is a problem and they’ve built up a level of expectations for him that are unrealistic,” the source said. “[They’ve] lulled him into a false sense of security.”

So his lawyers are buttering him up with false promises of exoneration, which will lead him to do a lot of stupid shit when he realizes they’re a crock. Yeah, that sounds about right.

Or point to the level of regulation in 1960 versus today and argue things were “better” back then, ignoring not only all of the scientific progress alone made in the 50+ year time period, but also looking ridiculous if you compare that 1960 pile to one from 50 years prior.

A lying, self-serving, megalomaniac President holding anti-establishment rallies might not represent the creep of a repressive society, might not be a moment of transition, but I cannot think of a more worrying set of precedents short of direct calls for disorder. In that case, that’s a MIC tactic as old as the damned hills. Romney’s argument mirrors that of the crowd who called for increased DoD spending due to the “Missile Gap” and the “Bomber Gap” before it. The idea that America cannot truly be superior to the rest of the world if we don’t have the most shiny things in our possession. Even during the 70s, there were warhawks in Congress who accused the Navy of being “weak” because our warships looked too uncluttered versus Soviet ones, which was largely a PR stunt as anybody with a modicum of understanding knew Soviet ships were so cluttered because they had to compensate for a less-sophisticated tech base. Your ships don’t look like floating radio shacks when (for example) the same antenna can do multiple tasks.

They still both tower over Jeff Flake, whose payoff was the “promise” of being included in the White House discussions on how to address DACA. Last I heard, the White House response to that was “LOL.”

The only person who looks more foolish than him is Susan Collins, who similarly sold her vote on the “promise” that there would be no cuts to Medicare as a result of the tax cuts, a “promise” that the party announced they intend to break before the ink is even dry on the bill.

They still both tower over Jeff Flake, whose payoff was the “promise” of being included in the White House discussions on how to address DACA. Last I heard, the White House response to that was “LOL.”

The only person who looks more foolish than him is Susan Collins, who similarly sold her vote on the “promise” that there would be no cuts to Medicare as a result of the tax cuts, a “promise” that the party announced they intend to break before the ink is even dry on the bill.

since this has already been made public, if she really had any sense of decency she could vote no now and could do it with dignity and impunity.

but she’s shown shes got no decency. it’s her version of 15+ trillion (or however many) pennies.

As has already been shown over the 6+ months, much of the arguments and excuses offered by Trump’s defenders are warmed over from the Nixon and Reagan years. Even with a Faux around, Tricky Dick would probably still have engaged in the Saturday Night Massacre because of anger over what he felt was an investigation hampering his presidency and still faced the backlash that eventually led to his resignation.

He turned to Amway after being laid off as a steel worker, a job he never returned to. He ended up going to work for GA Pacific til he retired. I found out not too long ago that they had also borrowed money against our house to stay afloat. They made money for a couple of years and that was it. So that’s what happened.

The Country’s Most Expensive Home is Mind-Bogglingly Luxurious

Enter 924 Bel Air Rd., the most expensive home in America, currently on the market for a cool $250 million. NBD.

This is the creation of noted degenerate developer Bruce Makosky, who had noticed a disparity between billionaires’ homes, typically a few million, and their $100 million super yachts. It comes will all furnishings and amenities, including $30 million worth of luxury cars, a helicopter, and 7 servants fully paid for 2 years. It also has a 5 foot stainless steel replica of a Leica camera (?).
A few additional points:
-It looks like a smarmy over-priced hotel
-Bruce’s chances of selling the place have taken a major jump with the new Trump tax plan.
-It sits on a single acre and has practically no grounds.
-The “magnificent view of the LA skyline” is as much about being seen as seeing.
-I really, really don’t like the idea of people being included with a house sale, even if they are being paid and could presumably leave at any time.

The Pitchforks Are Coming… For Us Plutocrats

By NICK HANAUER July/August 2014

Nick’s 3 year old warning is more timely, and more urgent, than ever. The alarming trends he saw in 2014 have gone into massive overdrive under the Trump administration.

But the problem isn’t that we have inequality. Some inequality is intrinsic to any high-functioning capitalist economy. The problem is that inequality is at historically high levels and getting worse every day. Our country is rapidly becoming less a capitalist society and more a feudal society. Unless our policies change dramatically, the middle class will disappear, and we will be back to late 18th-century France. Before the revolution.

And so I have a message for my fellow filthy rich, for all of us who live in our gated bubble worlds: Wake up, people. It won’t last.

If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn’t eventually come out. You show me a highly unequal society, and I will show you a police state. Or an uprising. There are no counterexamples. None. It’s not if, it’s when.

.

re: #296 Hecuba’s daughter

It’s possible that is true : the provision was added to help Trump and Corker was just a side beneficiary. Nyah — Corker was in on it. That was his reward for switching positions.

Whether he was or not, it should be highlighted because its a gratuitous giveaway to a few rich people that does absolutely nothing to promote new jobs. These LLCs which hold lots of real estate don’t employ many people.

while this is the winner comment, it’s but one in a long line of totally-being-ignored lies theyve been telling about this bill since the start

IMO I think it’s becoming obviously clear that the Republicans know they are toast in 2018. Probably to the point of not having a majority in either chamber. However, they will retain enough numbers in the Senate that they can filibuster everything.

So they want to pass this wealth transfer bill for their corporate masters knowing that in the 2018, even in the minority, the Democrats won’t be able to pass their own version of a tax bill because of the filibuster as well as Trump. And in the meantime, since Americans are largely dumb and ignorant about economics and have the memory of a fruit fly, the Republicans will be able to get their messaging out about Democrats wanting to raise taxes and then take back the Senate and keep the White House in 2020. And if the economy tanks between 2018-2020 we know who will get the blame and, thus, ensuring a better chance in 2020 for Republicans.

You’re giving them too much credit. They’re not smart enough to have known that it’d haunt them. Afterall, these idiots think they’re smarter than the intelligence community and/or that the DOJ is now Trump’s personal counsel.

So if it’s not a kickback to Corker, then it can be removed from the bill without any serious opposition and Corker will still vote for the bill despite his supposed opposition to any bill that would raise the deficit…right?

Just sent Bob Corker an email accusing him of selling out for 30 pieces of silver. Maybe he will be concerned enough about his reputation that he will reconsider his betrayal. Or maybe, being a Republican means never having to say you’re sorry.

More to the point - we know how Corker will benefit because we can see his tax return.

It is still a mystery as to how Cheeto will benefit…. for now, all we can do is guess.

I’d be all for a law that says a lawmaker or president cannot take advantage of the provisions of a tax bill they’ve voted for or signed. Especially without disclosing their own returns.

Meds may be one thing. I suspect they keep a lot of cash on hand as well as they’re too fucking stupid to invest. Track’s ripping off mommy because he knows she’s the richest person in Wasilla.
