Lyrics:

Sharing smoke
In the stair up off the hot car lot
Sun shine hard on the video spot, hm, mm, mm
Sure as any living dream
It’s not all then what it seems
And the whole thing’s hauled away

A womb, an empty robe, enough
You’re rolling up, you’re holding it, you’re fabric now
Para-mind, para-mind

Hallucinating Claire
Nor the snow shoe light or the autumns
Threw the meaning out the door (Now could you be a friend)
There ain’t no meaning anymore (Come and kiss me here again)

A womb, an empty robe, enough
You’re rolling up, you’re holding it, you’re bent prize
Canonize, canonize

Motor up and yeah, you’re own, ooh
And yeah, your own, your own

Fold the map and mend the gap
And I tow the word companion
And I make my self escape
Oh, the multitude of other
It comes always off the page

I hold the note, you wrote and know
You’ve buried all your alimony butterflies
Sub find, some night

I expect I’ll now get viciously attacked by Cenk Uygur’s cultish fans.

Barefoot Grin  Dec 22, 2017 • 6:37:06pm

I felt the same basically about Cenk and Keith in their early years of political shoutery—loud, brash, and not necessarily sincere. But I think Keith has stayed true and grown somewhat (I mean, I know it’s still a paycheck for him) while Cenk was, as you say, more about himself than the message. I lost interest in him a long, long, time ago.

Keith seemed to be fighting for cause. Cenk is fighting for Cenk.

Thanks, man. You invented a tasty damn pizza.

As ‘The Last Jedi’ Nears $600M, Can ‘Star Wars’ Recover?

With another over/under $34 million worldwide on Wednesday, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has now earned around $570m around the world, including an approximate $280m in North America. Barring a fluke, the film should end today with just under $300m domestic and just over $600m worldwide. How on Earth can the Star Wars franchise possibly recover from this monstrosity?

Rian Johnson, who has been given a stand-alone Star Wars trilogy to oversee once the current one wraps up, crafted a film that has earned overwhelmingly positive reviews. Including a 93% “fresh” and 8.1/10 critic ranking on Rotten Tomatoes. It also has an 86% score on Metacritic and a 7.9/10 user rating on imdb.com. Oh, and the film received an A from Cinemascore and a 90 from comScore. My god, what will Lucasfilm do now?

[…]

I’m sure that the folks who flooded the Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic user polls with negative reviews were real people and not robots or spam programs. But there is a rather high number of folks who apparently created an account specifically to offer a poor review of the newest Star Wars movie and then deleted the account. James Emanuel Shapiro did the hard work over at Birth.Death.Movies detailing that, of 100 random negative user reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, 94% of them either had no account or were first-time users. Of 100 random negative Metacritic user reviews, 72% of them were new users.

Maybe they review-bombed as some kind of anti-SJW conspiracy (take a look at the downvotes on YouTube for the Ocean’s 8 trailer) or skewed revenge from DC fans over Justice League. Or maybe the segment of online fans who didn’t like the movie flooded the opt-in polling and thus created the impression of poor word-of-mouth. But every other measurement thus far (the reviews, the initial box office, the audience polling from folks who absolutely saw the movie, etc.) would indicate that folks loved or at least somewhat enjoyed The Last Jedi.

And yet, despite this perfect storm of pretty good press and rock-solid box office, the overriding narrative right now is “What went wrong?” or “How Star Wars can be fixed!” That we are discussing the controversy, even whether the controversy is genuine, means we are letting these folks dictate the terms of the conversation. This is little different than having a singular climate change scientist or singular pro-gun purchase background checks politician debating a singular opponent on the other side and then acting as if both sides have equally strong levels of support.

Sort of misleading. The band who tossed the Nazi was Death Preacher, and Dickinson just gave an opinion.

Good on Death Preacher for having the guy tossed.

Friday night, holiday weekend. So there is this rather upbeat tune just released

Iframe

We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
I’m comfortable with who I am
I’m comfortable with my cynical stance
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man

See it’s all around your head like a hurricane
It echoes through the halls of your beautiful veins
The shock is the awe of a reaction
So everybody prays to a midnight sun
I wanna know, I wanna know, I wanna know the truth
I lost my partner what will I do
I’ll get another lover baby just like you
I’ll skip to my darling, cheers to my
LOU

We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
I’m comfortable with who I am
I’m comfortable with my cynical stance
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man

See it’s all around your head like a halo glow
It’s circling the walls of your beautiful skull
The shock and the awe, hysteria
While everybody prays with a swollen tongue
I wanna know, I wanna know, I want another truth
I lost my partner what will I do
I’ll get another lover baby just like you
And skip to my darling, cheers to my
LOU

We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
I’m comfortable with who I am
I’m comfortable with my cynical stance
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man

We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
I’m comfortable with who I am
I’m comfortable with my cynical stance
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man
We need a miracle, a miracle, a miracle man

Beware hysteria
Beware hysteria
Livin our life
Livin our life
Beware hysteria

Miracle man

Reminds me of a line from “Cannonball II” where Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. were dressed up as priests sitting at a bar with Dean drinking a milk. It goes something along the lines of this….

Davis: “Aren’t you afraid what your liver will do to that milk ?”
Martin: “My liver died three years ago!”

My wife and I went into town this afternoon. Literally every clerk and business owner wished us “Merry Christmas” (knowing we are atheists), and several commented exactly that: Trump is allowing us to say Merry Christmas again.

Never mind that Merry Christmas was not a thing before Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” and Christians outlawed overt celebrations of Christmas in the early years of the USA.

I have what I think is a standard Democratic view (or at least what our Democratic presidents have had for a view) of war: I don’t want it to happen, but I’m not going to be wishy-washy if it’s necessary. And one of the things I’ve learned from the history I’ve read is that if you are going to war against a country, you not only have to beat the leadership, but you have to beat the people. They have to believe that their cause is wrong. And that is where the Civil War went wrong.

Nebraska Democratic Party Chair and former Bold Nebraska Chair Jane Kleeb sends an E-mail about the recent decision by the Nebraska Public Service Commission to reject the Keystone XL Pipeline route through the state:

Bold Nebraska ended 2017 just as we started back in 2010 — organizing landowners and communities who have grave concerns about a foreign company threatening to take their land by eminent domain, for a continent-spanning, death-funnel pipeline that would pump toxic tarsands and benzene beneath their farms and ranches, threatening the Ogalalla aquifer we all depend on.

With the Nebraska Public Service Commission’s decision this week to deny TransCanada’s request to file an amended application for its as-yet-unsurveyed Keystone XL “Mainline Altenative” pipeline route, the company now faces “three years or more” of court challenges to the PSC’s ruling, and the prospect of even stronger #NoKXL opposition during an entirely new state-level review of the route by the PSC. Landowners’ attorneys with Domina Law Group called the PSC’s decision the “best possible outcome.”

In 2018, Bold will continue to organize new landowners affected by Keystone XL and grow the membership of the Nebraska Easement Action Team (N.E.A.T.) of landowners, who for over seven years now have stood united in refusing to sell easements to TransCanada for the pipeline. We’ll continue to support Nebraska landowners in their ongoing fight to stop KXL in state courts, and move forward with allies on our federal lawsuit challenging Trump’s federal permit approval of KXL.

Thing is, I’m really flexible with others’ sincere religious beliefs and the comfort they take from them and the good they sometimes use them for, but when they start trying to push their shtick on other folks, including me, like with this phony newfound reverence for all the persecuted martyrs of the malls and TV commercials at Christmas, I really want to get back to a New York frame of mind: “Hey, I got your Merry Christmas right here, pal.”

But that would be wrong. I guess.

Of course, because the GOP will get out there on the stump and rail against “job-killing regulations” and insist that the GOP needs their votes so that Trump’s legislative agenda can get enacted. That if Democrats get elected to a majority, then Trump’s “populist agenda” will be defeated.

If you read the article, the reporter went to a town in Texas where one of the plants being closed is located. The town is accepting that it’s not going to reopen, though they’re wondering why it’s closing if Trump is president, but they’re trying to move on. They’ve even applied to host the new Amazon headquarters, since they’re close to Austin.

Starving polar bear video that went viral a couple weeks ago (attributed to climate change) has been debunked.

outsideonline.com

The person who made the video for National Geographic was careful when releasing the video to note there was no link between the starving polar bear and climate change.

However, those who helped the video go viral conflated the two issues, primarily to promote the idea of anthropogenic climate change.

Climate change driven by humans is the best explanation for what we see today. However, when people create “proofs” which are easily debunked to promote the issue, they are actually hurting the issue (it gives deniers ammunition to say “see, if this is fake, what else is fake”).

While writing an apologetics article, I ducked over to Conservapedia (I showered before I came back). Today’s featured article:

Atheism and Cancer (no link but you can go to their main page and see it there)

The Trustworthy Encyclopedia (LOL) asserts that atheism is causing a rise in cancer rates (seriously).

One wonders who is supporting Andrew Schafley, or is Conservapedia one massive trolling operation of conservatives. (It would appear their Conservative Bible Project is still proceeding—Schafley claims when it is finished they should be able to have it accepted in public schools because then it won’t be a religious text or something).

I said Happy Holidays to a gentleman today and I didn’t burst into flames.

Oh jeez, reminds me of a call I had yesterday at work. I had assigned a task (a “Preventative Action”) to someone who was unfamiliar with them and he wanted a tutorial on how to complete it. My whole spiels was, “why yes, you can complete it yourself, and here’s how to do it, but please, let me do it. You can send me an email.” (That way I can make sure everything that needs to be said is said, and there are no loose ends.) But he started the call out with a rant about saying “Merry Christmas:” I don’t know if it’s politically correct to say that, blah, blah, blah.”

Honest to God I thought, “Am I gonna have to report this guy?” But I decided that I didn’t work with the guy, I was just assigning him some work and I was going to let this slide. Seriously, though, this was a first for me at the evil too big to fail bank.

And while I’m checking out WaPo articles, something that makes my blood absolutely boil: the Puerto Rican disaster (non)effort. And that goes not just for the administration, but our Congress should be doing something, not making the situation worse!

In October, when Trump was tossing “beautiful, soft” rolls of paper towels at Puerto Ricans, he offered lavish promises of aid and said Wall Street lenders were “going to say goodbye” to Puerto Rico’s $72 billion debt. But the debt was not written off, and disaster-relief aid has been inadequate and piecemeal. Now, Trump and congressional Republicans are hitting Puerto Rico with an additional, man-made catastrophe.

The GOP tax bill, which Trump celebrated this week, treats Puerto Rico as a foreign country, imposing a 12.5 percent tax on the income companies there receive from intellectual property — a big hit to its crucial pharmaceutical and medical-device sector. Rather than give Puerto Rico special tax treatment, which it urgently needs, Trump and his congressional allies gave employers a powerful reason to move jobs off the island.

Russia knows that it cannot compete economically in the modern world. Its only road to success is to bring the rest of the world down to its level and, except for China, it seems to be excelling at that goal. Interfering with global communication would be just another step in their path to world destruction.

It is infuriating that our news media has refused to keep pounding on the Trump failure to help Puerto Rico. The 12.5% tax has been discussed for over a week and nothing has been done to remedy this. But then the GOP doesn’t care about CHIP either. They are going to continue on their path of destroying the safety net by demanding that any assistance for children or Puerto Rico be paid by reducing outlays for Medicare/Medicaid..

We had these on turkey skin at a friend’s house the other week. Going to make them on chicken skins on Monday. Already have three ounces of Sturgeon caviar in the fridge…just need to pick up the skins and creme fraiche and chives.

Interesting story. However, I don’t know if they can tap into fiber cables easy as there’s no induction with light as there is electrical.

Fiber optic cables can be tapped by inserting a beam splitter assembly or hacking the electronics at the optical-electro-optical repeater junctions. These optical communications repeaters are required to overcome the attenuation that accompanies sending light over great distances inside a high index of refraction medium, because while absorption is low it’s still there. The USS Jimmy Carter was specifically designed to do this kind of work.

“… The bill was introduced by 85-year-old Richard Marples, a New Hampshire legislator who’s been advocating for the sovereign citizen movement as an elected official since the late 1990s. Marples was arrested in 2016, like many sovereign citizens, for driving without a valid license, and has since tried to introduce a law to effectively abolish vehicle registration entirely in the state of New Hampshire.

His latest bill, which will come up for a vote in January, would impose $10,000 fines on anyone failing to disclose the complete terms of every so-called “contract” entered into with a “sovereign inhabitant.” It also protects the ability of sovereigns to commit what is often called “paper terrorism.” This is when sovereigns file dozens of false legal claims in order to force judges, police and other government officials to fight bogus claims in court for as long as possible. …”

I would expect the major nations all have taps into most if not all of the ‘net. It’s not hard to find or hack. The threat here is outright cutting or complete destruction of the cable itself or injecting false traffic, such as malware designed to attack internet hubs. And sub v sub is a rarely fought kinetic battle. Find and fix precede destroy.

I installed a new cheap printer today. I have a closet where I keep all of the equipment boxes and I cleaned out that closet this afternoon. I found the box for the very first printer I ever bought (four printer ago), a box for a Nokia 6010, boxes for stuff that’s 15 years old and stuff I threw out ages ago. It was a trip down memory lane but now my trash bin is full of stryrofoam protectors (bad) and the cardboard is all in the recycling bin. Earlier in the week I took some old stereo gear to Goodwill (most still with the box - one receiver I regretted donating as soon as I drove away). I reorganized the closet but I still have too much stuff to get all of the boxes in there. I filled two bags with old connecting cables that I’m going to take to Best Buy to recycle along with the dead printer.

That, plus laundry.

Hope everyone has a low-stress holiday weekend. Try to have at least one outrage-free day.
