In Which Max Boot Awakens: “2017 Was the Year I Learned About My White Privilege”

Politics • Views: 35,430

The vast majority of conservatives have obviously decided they can live with themselves as they support the malignant narcissist in the White House, but in an almost miraculous development the election of this monster has actually bashed some sense into some conservative heads.

For one, Max Boot: 2017 Was the Year I Learned About My White Privilege.

A quarter century is enough time to examine deeply held shibboleths and to see if they comport with reality. In my case, I have concluded that my beliefs were based more on faith than on a critical examination of the evidence. In the last few years, in particular, it has become impossible for me to deny the reality of discrimination, harassment, even violence that people of color and women continue to experience in modern-day America from a power structure that remains for the most part in the hands of straight, white males. People like me, in other words. Whether I realize it or not, I have benefitted from my skin color and my gender — and those of a different gender or sexuality or skin color have suffered because of it.

This sounds obvious, but it wasn’t clear to me until recently. I have had my consciousness raised. Seriously.

I actually had my own awakening to the horrors of the right nearly 10 years ago, but I had the advantage of having been a liberal for most of my life, before the 9/11 attacks. Max Boot is coming to these realizations rather late — but better late than never. (To conclude with a horrendous cliché.)

Well, will wonders never cease! Good for you, Max.

Now, let’s talk about some of your Foreign Policy positions…

Maybe I am wrong on this: but I thought Max Boot was like Bill Kristol — a neo-con who actually did not care about social issues, cultural issues, or economic issues, except to the extent they affected FP issues. They aligned themselves with the party that matched most closely their FP objectives. In the age of Trump, they had to rethink where they really belong.

CULLMAN, Ala. (WIAT) - Family and friends of 22-year-old Logan Trammell are gathering to remember the young musician after an accidental shooting took his life on Christmas Eve.

Trammell’s family says he was driving away from his parents’ home around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday in one of his father’s vehicles when it happened.

His father was unaware that his son was borrowing his truck. Fearing the vehicle was being stolen, the family says he yelled out and fired a warning shot in the air in an attempt to get the driver’s attention. They say he then shot once at the tailgate to stop whoever was taking the truck.

Once the truck stopped, they say his father realized he had accidentally shot his own son.

“It was just a horrific accident. A horrific accident. My brother thought someone was stealing his truck, never realized it was Logan because he didn’t live down here all the time, he lived with my mom and dad,” Trammell’s aunt Tammy Jacobs said. “And he was supposed to be in the bed.”

They keep harping on the dossier because they figure it’s the lynchpin of the whole mess, or at least that’s how they’ve spun it. Their belief is that the FISA warrants that implicated Flynn sprung from the dossier, so if they can discredit it then the warrants will be similarly discredited and anything obtained through them ruled inadmissible.

The very first round of these articles (I forget exactly which one) did contain one useful insight - an Obama-to-Trump voter from a rust belt state who said he liked Obama until he made the remark about how “if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon Martin.”

So…yeah. That kind of thing completely negates the durr hurr they went for Obama so how can they be racist?! squawking point. Racism isn’t binary, it’s a smooth continuum, and there was always a segment of original Obama voters who were okay with him as long as he didn’t, in their view, act too blackity-blackity-black.

re: #51 Backwoods_Sleuth

I commented under the article.

How is this accidental? It’s not OK to murder someone for stealing your truck, This was a psycho with a gun trying to kill someone, and he succeeded.

What happened to collecting on the insurance when your vehicle is stolen?

Gah—I hate when they call this shit “accidental.”

That wasn’t an accidental shooting—he shot purposefully—he just hit the wrong target. They only use the words accident and accidentally 4 times in that short article.

Makes ‘em go out and drive to some place they can drink and then they drive home drunk. Not good.

If they could get to a local they can at least maybe get someone to take them home. Or walk…or at least not have to drive so far, understanding they are going to drive no matter what, so cut the distance.

My friend’s 14 yr old daughter was killed in the back seat of a car making a run to Lebanon Junction.

It was reported here a couple of years ago that on a typical Saturday night, after midnight, one out of every four vehicles on our local highway was operated by a legally drunk driver.

‘Frequently coming across the “swipe left if you voted for Trump” bio, Mike ignores the demand. “I still swipe right. I would like them to know who I am first before I openly tell them I voted for this person. They know nothing about me. I’m a very reasonable guy. I’m a nice person, open-minded.”’

And then you’ll admit you voted for Trump and they’ll know exactly who you are: A lying fuck who is totally unable to take responsibility for his actions.

Doesn’t have any effect on the extreme number of drunks in these parts.

Check out Ocean City New Jersey. The drunkest dry town in New Jersey. No service, no BYOB, no stores. And packed every summer. Somers Point is busy, busy, busy…

We all know that this government isnt gonna take trump down right? There needs to be an independent counsel or a 9/11 type counsel to tie all the trump family, kushner, russia etc crimes together. Mueller aint gonna do it, he’s gonna charge many individuals with crimes, and republicans are gonna cry they all aren’t related. We already know that the republicans arent gonna do anything to hold trump accountable. And if the Republicans are the minority, they still know how to thawrt the majority. Its pretty sad that this country wasn’t taken down by an actual war, but a war on information and the power of the internet.
But hey, lets keep posting cat pictures and internet memes. We’ll be fine.

The egos on some of these journalists. How dare their plebeian readers CRITICIZE the omniscient ones?

Thirty-five years ago I failed the last class in the journalism program at UT-Austin. In hindsight, I’m glad I did, if only because I don’t have to explain to someone that B.J. stands for Bachelor of Journalism (really, that was the degree I was supposed to get) and not Blow Job.

I don’t know…and you don’t either.

Let Mueller do his thing and let this play out. Freaking out isn’t helping a damn thing and it plays into what the Republicans want…doubt about the process, the evidence, who’s doing what etc.

With Trump’s poll numbers auguring into the ground and generic ballots heavily favoring the DNC next year, perhaps the navel-gazers in the press might stop printing “Trump voters still love him!” pieces and ask where the ones who no longer do have gone, or even running pieces on people who voted against Trump and asking them what it would take from him/the GOP to get their votes.

Oh wait, that would actually mean confronting opposition to their constant “Trump can do no wrong” drumbeat.
