Alabama Tells Roy Moore He Lost, Just Go Away Now

Knock it off
Politics • Views: 36,462

Gun-totin’ child molester Roy Moore filed a lawsuit claiming there was “widespread voter fraud” (read: black people were allowed to vote for some reason), but today Alabama state officials told him, “Just stop, Roy. It’s over. Go home.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama officials on Thursday unhesitatingly pushed aside a legal challenge from Roy S. Moore and certified Doug Jones as the winner of this month’s Senate election.

The action, during a brief meeting at the State Capitol, was essentially the state’s final step before the seating of the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Alabama in a quarter century. It was also a swift rejection, by some of the state’s most powerful Republicans, of Mr. Moore’s complaint that he was the victim of “systematic voter fraud.”

[…]

“You win with class, you lose with class, and he just can’t do it,” Angi Horn Stalnaker, a Republican strategist who ran campaigns, with mixed success, against Mr. Moore, said acidly.

My niece just posted something on FB that tries me sorely.

She’s always posting these motivational quotes, about how only you can change your own life and how you really ought to, etc. Doesn’t leave a lot of room for being happy with your life as it is, plus puts all the blame on you if you aren’t.

Today she said, “Nothing happens if nothing happens”

When I say she tries me sorely, it’s because I’m trying REALLY HARD not to respond with “The First Rule of Tautology Club is the First Rule of Tautology Club.”

That wouldn’t be nice of me.

Biology Professor Lectures Texas Legislator on Sex Determination Stuff (goes to Campus Reform, more at the link):

“In case you forgot how many genders there are,” Republican State Representative Briscoe Cain tweeted on December 21, attaching a picture of the XX and XY chromosomes.

“One thing I am not doing is arguing with someone whose basic premise is incorrect and tries to tell me that they know more about my science, in which I am an expert, than I do.”

Describing herself as a geneticist, Rachael French replied to the tweet with an extended harangue in which she impugned Cain’s motives and derided his understanding of biology.

“Hey geneticist here. You’ve disingenuously and for bigoted purposes oversimplified a complex phenomenon,” she wrote. “A few notes: 1) Sex and gender aren’t the same thing. 2) Chromosomes don’t determine sex.”

I’m afraid that the diversion in the meaning of “sex” and “gender” is causing a lot of unnecessary confusion.

Chromosomes don’t determine sex.

The problem is, traditionally, the word “sex” was used that way. Indeed, that’s why there is a portion of the Y that is called the ” sex-determining region “: en.wikipedia.org

I realize that there is a contemporary effort to re-define the words “gender” and “sex” to try and remove a sense of genetic determinism. But languages have their own momentum and it’s not usually easy to try and reshape the lexicon.

Guess Trump wants coders to think that they’re working hard to fix bugs on the site, blaming Obama in the process, but then Trump goes out to golf at a rate not seen since Eisenhower. Trump spent years bitching about Obama golfing, and Obama had all of 330 rounds during 8 years.

Trump’s already up to 80+ in under 1 year. At this rate, he’s more than double Obama’s pace.

None of this would be much of an issue unless Trump himself didn’t make it a campaign issue when he said he wouldn’t golf because he wouldn’t have the time.

He’s now golfing at a rate not seen in decades.

I am very pumped for the new year. The GOP lost two governorships and its supermajority in the Virginia House of Delegates, the Democrats won an unwinnable Senate seat and have been running 10 points ahead of Hillary on average in races across the country, Trump is about 20 points underwater in approval and Democrats have a 13 point edge in the generic ballot. If Mueller issues another wave of indictments before November, we could have a Democratic tsunami in November. Happy New Year everybody!

It’s something like the word “theory.” In science that is a well-supported explanation of all the available facts (leaving none out), which has predictive capability.

In religion and common usage, it’s “wild-ass speculation.”

Gender has been defined as a separate issue in biology from sex since 1955.

Right-wingers disingenuously using the word “gender” are no different than religious apologists disingenuously using the word “theory.” They aren’t trying to “convert” those who know what the words mean, they are trying to make sure their own folks don’t leave the fold.

If you get too many conservatives to start thinking about “gender” as a separate issue from “sex,” you take away one of the fear sticks they use to beat their voters to the polls, and an “other” to hate.

hubris writ large

“First, Merry Christmas to each of you and your families. Secondly, I want each of you to know that I totally and unconditionally forgive you for all things said and done over the past two months,” the Jamestown Republican said in a message obtained by the Lexington Herald-Leader. “As we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior today, I am reminded that Jesus made it clear that we can’t receive God’s grace and then refuse to give it to others who we may think have wronged or hurt us in some way.”

Hoover did not respond Thursday to a request for comment from the Herald-Leader. It is unclear how many lawmakers received the text message and exactly what actions Hoover was forgiving.

Hoover said he would step down as speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives in November after secretly settling a sexual harassment claim made by a member of his staff. The day before his tearful announcement, eight members of the Republican caucus wrote an open letter calling for his resignation and other House Republican leaders called for an investigation into the sexual harassment allegations.

snip

“It wasn’t sent to me, so obviously he didn’t forgive me,” said Rep. C. Wesley Morgan, R-Richmond.

Morgan, who has filed a resolution to expel Hoover from the House, is concerned the text might be a signal that Hoover will try to keep his position as Speaker of the House when the legislature convenes Tuesday for its annual session.

“It’s my impression that he’s going to make a power play to try and come back as speaker,” Morgan said. “My feeling is that he’s trying to sway those people not to fight him.”

Though Hoover said he would resign from his leadership post, he has not filed a formal letter of resignation to the House of Representatives, which is required by law.

Prior to 1955, gender in modern English only referred to grammatical gender.

In 1926, Henry Watson Fowler stated that the definition of the word pertains to this grammar-related meaning:

“Gender…is a grammatical term only. To talk of persons…of the masculine or feminine g[ender], meaning of the male or female sex, is either a jocularity (permissible or not according to context) or a blunder.”

As things settle, it will be more easy to asses the meaning of his win on a national scale. Mostly you can think of him as a one-term phenomenon who is a Robert Kennedy, if RFK had been allowed to evolve into a XXI Century liberal. We’ll take him as a gift.

No, I don’t think that’s a diversion of the meaning. Chromosomes do not determine sex, or there’d by no XY women with Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome.

But… you’ve embedded the word we’re trying to define in its own definition. Now, as an old fan of threaded interpretive languages I kind of grok that, but here it’s a bit of begging the question.

Both “gender” and “sex” are words in English with different etymologies but have been used in the past used interchangeably.

And when the early work in cytology came up with the fact that (nearly all phenotypically) men did not have two X chromosomes then the idea of biological sex as determined by the X/Y became a dominant one.

Today there is a movement to get away from disparaging those who do not want to be cast in traditional gender roles and thus to (along with many other reasons) move away from genetic determinism, yet I do not want to go back and do some revisionist history.

re: #41 Anymouse 🌹

Because “gender” as a loan word from old French found use in the study of languages. But spoken languages are so fluid and the implication from the original language found uses too.

Both “gender” and “sex” are words in English with different etymologies but have been used in the past used interchangeably.

Similar to the usage of “theory” I noted above (though it is two words, not one).

Prior to 1945, in English “gender” was not used for anything but grammar.

And “sex” (such as the ridiculous bathroom bills requiring you to conform to your “biological sex”) says nothing about the 1% of the population with intersex conditions, including those who are chimeras (two embryos that fused into one, with XX and XY characteristics).

On the matter of a person who is a chimera in particular, that person doesn’t usually know unless there is some sort of genetic test that reveals it. Does that mean they can go to both bathrooms under those laws, or neither?

I’ve not been feeling well for a few days. I don’t have full focus or attention span. And i wont be sticking around…

I constantly delude myself into believing that I’m “in control”. I’m not. i am reminded of it (reality strikes) and i have to also remind myself “actively and purposely” of it.

Take the very basic inhale, exhale, exchange of gases at the alveolar level in the lungs, etc. You know, breathing.

I very often quote Thich Nhat Hanh’s “Smile, breathe and go slowly.”
When i do, i am serious and do my best not to be glib about it

Still sometimes (well regularly) i need a reality check reminder
I dont think this rates a page so I’ve put some of it in privates to shorten the display

You know. I remember when the bush tax cuts went into place. I saw my check increase by 20 bucks every 2 weeks. The difference that made those popular then was the check(s) everyone got (even if it was a pittance). Everyone got a check for 300 or 600 if you were married and even if it was a gimmick, it worked for a lot of people.

They are hyping “what people will see in their paychecks” come february. Guess what? People aren’t going to see much beyond the same 20 bucks and They’re going to say “That’s it, That’s my big tax cut?” and it will be another nail in the GOP coffin.

And let’s not forget what’s gonna happen when they go to file their 2018 taxes and get hosed on the deductions.

I will have to add that to my wall of quotes in my office.

Some of my favorites:

I am not what happened to me, I am what I chose to become
and
I manufacture my own misery

Those sayings and many more helped me cope and keep me grounded early in my quest for sobriety.

“SEE! Look at how much money you got back! You didn’t have that money before!”

“But I’m also getting hosed because my usual deductions are either gone or no longer applicable to me.”

I manufacture my own misery

Those sayings and many more helped me cope and keep me grounded early in my quest for sobriety.

We are the “victims” of the constant barrage of stories we tell ourselves.

Who we are, what we are, what were worth

And moslty we don’t know weve been doing it to oursevles our entire lives

if the next quarter sees positive growth, in april 2018 the obama economic expansion will become the second longest in american history since the business cycle began in 1835 at 107 months

Evening Lizardim from the frigidly cold fish country. I’ve had to endure more than the usual political rant from my father; in fact, he has now gone on record as saying that he is deliberately feeding his confirmation bias… which gives me immense sadness, as any hope of reforming the fishfolk has long since passed. It’s confusing and infuriating how a man who is a respected professional in his field can be so oblivious in his personal views, but there it is. How go things among the lizardfolk on this bitterly cold country night?

So I see wingnuts are holding up the Rasmussen poll today as “proof” that Trump isn’t the worst polling modern president*. Even funnier is they’re comparing this one outlier poll to the Obama’s poll average at the same point in his first year and…I don’t know, somehow showing that Obama was “as bad” or something. I’m not sure how saying that Trump is doing as well as Obama is something to boast about when they think Obama the worst president in history.

No votes for former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Strangely, Alabama has a rather ‘liberal’ law for counting write-in ballots. Alaska, for instance required voters to write in Lisa Murkowski with complete accuracy, including IIRC, the correct middle initial. AL only requires that the election officials be able to make a defensible determination of the voter’s intent (with party reps watching over them.) Most of the Rice variants above would pass.

Point and laugh at the delusional lady. I suppose for some folks her ranting and raving is entertaining. Kind of scary that too many of our fellow Americans refuse to accept facts if they don’t like them. That’s how we ended up with someone in the White House who refuses to accept climate change as a reality.

What’s really bad is that CNN feels the need to give airtime to a crazy person. Obviously Trump wasn’t an anomoly. I dread thinking what they’re going to do in the next election.
