The Hour’s Getting Late: Trump Says He Has the “Absolute Right to Do What I Want With the Justice Department”

Politics • Views: 35,207

So tonight, Donald Trump said this to a New York Times reporter:

“I have absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department.”

And if that doesn’t send chills down your spine, you haven’t been paying attention. It’s a blatant expression of Trump’s authoritarian intentions.

I dropped this right at the end of the last thread. Not only is Trump dangerous, he’s stupidly dangerous.

Or insanely dangerous?

Is there anyone, even among his supporters, who actually believes he knows anything about what’s in these bills?

The checks and balances of our government are getting stress tested more than any time in our history.

Probably not worth repeating, but this was my response:

If only one timid reporter could ask, “that’s amazing, Mr. President; could you share some of your knowledge on those topics for our viewers?”

I suspect the EC bit is something Bannon fed him at some point in order to assuage his ego about losing the PV so resoundingly, telling him that the EC favors Democrats so to win it meant he’d “beat the odds” or something along those lines.

What I read in this statement is Trump is trying to lay the groundwork for firing Mueller, laying out the talking points ahead of time so when he performs the Saturday Night Massacre, the GOP knows what to say immediately when the press come a-calling.

It’s becoming crystal clear that telling total fabrications repeatedly with no shame isn’t a weakness of Trump’s, but rather his strength. The question is, are we as a nation up to the task.

I’m starting to think that Trump is stuck on the idea that he can never get caught, so he doesn’t NEED to fire Mueller.

It’s rather interesting that McConnell is working with Schumer to keep the Senate in session so that Trump can’t appoint anyone.

His supporters don’t care if he knows anything. They respond only to his boastful words. He’s a figurehead for them. What he actually knows or does is irrelevant.

As for answering a reporter’s question, Trump would either utter his usual bafflegab or pretend not to hear the question.

He lies and lies and lies and lies and lies and lies.

He knows he won’t get called out on his lies.

When he does get called out (which is rare, but it happens) he just doubles down on the lie because he knows that eventually the interviewer will move on to something else.

He is an autistic savant when it comes to lying.

You must be thinking of the press as it was 30 years ago. Today’s press grovels on its belly and just sucks up whatever bullshit the WH offers to them, with gratitude.

Trump has nothing to fear from the media, no matter what he does. He could declare himself to be dictator for life and the first question would be what his new title would be.

Style sections of nation’s newspapers would run puff pieces on the wives of other dictators and how Mellon compares.

Considering the leaks yesterday about the White House legal strategy (i.e. “Flynn is a fucking liar!!!”), I think even Donny is beginning to see the writing on the wall. But is still stupid enough to believe that the only way to ensure he’s safe is to fire Mueller and get somebody in there to put the kibosh on the whole mess.

One of Trump’s most outlandish false claims, which he just repeated for the 11th time, is that the Electoral College is set up in a way that favours Democrats. (I don’t say “lie” here because he might just be very confused.)

Brilliant on the ambiguity and yet certainty of the 2A.

And devious enough to set up the EC to favor a party that was non existent at the time and wouldnt be formed until 1828 or so?

Now I am very sure I do not need to read Hillbilly Elegy. Vance based his book on his life growing up near Cincinnati, Ohio, and his childhood summer visits to family in Jackson, KY. IOW, he’s not a hillbilly, but merely a poseur, and judging from the first several pages she has tweeted about, the book reeks of middle-class white entitlement pretending to be a “rags to riches” Horatio Alger tale.

Yesterday was my birthday, because God is cruel and gave me a birthday two days after Christmas. For reasons.

I gave myself the gift of having no interaction whatsoever with anything related to Trump. He became what he hates to be…irrelevant.

It was a beautiful day. I highly recommend it when you feel the world is just too dark. Turn the bastard off and know you’re doing a good thing for you as well as the thing that pisses him off the most…ignoring him.

My Mom’s birthday was yesterday too. Or more accurately, the anniversary of her birth, since she died 15 years ago.
She used to say that as a child she was often disappointed when people would kind of roll it into Christmas celebrations. She wanted a separate birthday like everyone else.
With that in mind, I hope your birthday was lovely and friends and family treated it as a distinct occasion of its own.

My birthday is in November and my brother’s is in January. Because they’re that close to Christmas, one celebration would affect the other in how many gifts we would receive. My sister, on the other hand, being born in August, would make out like a bandit both times.

Considering that my due date was my next oldest sister’s 1st birthday, probably more like “Oops.” Several oopses. Five kids and two miscarriages in just less than seven years — they wound up with five teenagers for four months, since the youngest kid turned 13 in January of the year that the oldest kid turned 20 in May.

IMO, Haberman sees her job as avoiding any editorial content, or, generally, fact checking of what she’s told, but rather as reporting as close to verbatim what she hears from Trump. I’ve seen enough comment on her Twitter feed that I don’t think she is really covering for him. It’s almost like she is leaving it to everyone else to point out the lies and bullshit Trump spews, and lots of people do just that.

Daniel Dale is taking her to task, gently. But I think, honestly, that the examples he gives of Trump backtracking and/or correcting himself when challenged are underwhelming. He simply twists out of your grip and keeps going.

There’s something to be said for ‘giving him enough rope’, and Dale’s best point is that the articles describing the interviews don’t fact check him much, either. THAT may be their worst failing.

I don’t know. I honestly think the only ‘prosecutorial’ interview that might work is an ACTUAL prosecutorial interview. Christ, look at his deposition! His lawyers had to admit to his lying something like 30 times.

Getting him on the record without aides for 1/2 hour. Remember, Trump works the room. He responds to the feedback he receives. IOW, he reflects his audience. What if his audience is neutral and doesn’t give him cues? Haberman thinks you get a view of his actual thinking. The utter incoherence of that 1/2 hour, then, reflects the utter incoherence of his thinking.

Which isn’t news, if you’ve been paying attention.

I object to Haberman repeatedly acting like it’s a binary choice - either let him say whatever he wants with zero pushback, or going Tom Cruise on him.

Someone made a really good suggestion on how to push back - tell Trump that someone must have misled him and given him bad info. If it’s someone else’s fault, Trump’s not gonna get that mad about it. That’s a good idea.

Hoarse Whisperer also made a good point - while narcissists are master manipulators, they’re also very easily manipulated. A clever reporter could exploit the living hell out of that.

Yeah, I agree. She’s acting like your only choice is between being a stenographer and an ‘enhanced methods’ interrogator.

re: #72 Blind Frog Belly White

IMO, Haberman sees her job as avoiding any editorial content, or, generally, fact checking of what she’s told, but rather as reporting as close to verbatim what she hears from Trump. I’ve seen enough comment on her Twitter feed that I don’t think she is really covering for him. It’s almost like she is leaving it to everyone else to point out the lies and bullshit Trump spews, and lots of people do just that.

Agreed.

She’s verrry conservative/old school.

BTW, not inviting a M. Haberman pile on.

As I see it, the problem is that the Times doesn’t do the right follow up on the interviews with all the lies and bullshit. It’s like they don’t want to even touch on what might be construed as opinion.

Compare that with their treatment of HRC.

re: #82 Blind Frog Belly White

Getting him on the record without aides for 1/2 hour. Remember, Trump works the room. He responds to the feedback he receives. IOW, he reflects his audience. What if his audience is neutral and doesn’t give him cues? Haberman thinks you get a view of his actual thinking. The utter incoherence of that 1/2 hour, then, reflects the utter incoherence of his thinking.

Which isn’t news, if you’ve been paying attention.

Please remember, M. Haberman did not conduct this interview. @nytmike did.

Ehhh, in general, probably not. All religions are a bit fucked up. The holy books often include weird, noxious, violent crap that you wouldn’t want preached from the pulpit, and religious people often act in ways their holy books condemn.

On the other hand, if you’re just critiquing Islam and not the other major faiths for general fucked-up-edness, then it’s probably Islamophobic.

They often do, but the problem is that Trump and his administration also need to be pressed in real time. So that we can see the shifting discomfort, the desperate flailing and the faux-righteous anger at having their flagrant lies proven false right to their faces.

Because this, in my personal experience, has always been the most prominent and common tell of a liar. Most people who are telling the truth can maintain their conviction calmly without having to conjure up theatrics in an effort to sell the indignation they imagine they’d feel if they weren’t lying. Liars often ham it up.

For an on-air interview, absolutely. They can ‘t walk away from that as easily. I think in a print interview a non-confrontational approach can perhaps be more revealing just by letting them talk… and talk… and talk. They do tend to drop bombs when they feel comfy.

It is still infuriating to think about how Hillary was disrespected during the entire campaign. The NYT had no problems calling her out, even when it wasn’t warranted. During his entire adult life it appears that no one has really stood up to Trump; he’s never seen any reason to mend his behavior because it has been so successful in getting him to his current position.

Of course at this point, he may be suffering from dementia so that he is really incapable of change.

OTOH I have met businessmen who were wealthy and arrogant and dismissive of any who challenge them. They expect others to kowtow to their every need and are especially contemptuous of public servants — and public service. They value people only based on their wealth. Many seem fond of the notion that they are beneficiaries of better genes; and that certain populations are genetically inferior. Trump is an especially obnoxious exemplar of these characteristics.

I believe that the response to shootings has gone from “Nobody should have a gun like that!” to “If there are guns like that, I need to get one!”

The GOP/NRA tactics are remarkably effective. Start out by saying it’s too soon to politicize. Next, try to hang it on Mental Health, even though they won’t support doing anything about THAT, either. Next, if there’s something different about the weapon used, mumble something about maybe regulating that so that there are headlines saying you’re bending to public opinion.

Then wait for people to lose interest.

It was a Muslim theologian that pointed out that there are different types of Muslims/Christians/Jews/Hindus, etc.

First, those who do not practice the faith closely but rather identify with it culturally and ritually in terms of holidays and weddings, etc. (in that sense, I am a Christian, I celebrate Christmas and got married in a church)

Then those who practice the faith more closely, observing its rules, but would never think of imposing it on anyone else. (I have a number of good friends like this)

Thirdly, those who are very strict and encourage using laws and social rules to force others to at least superficially obey. (a common theme in the GOP and its “America is a Christian nation” ideology)

And lastly, those who would use violence and terror to spread their faith. (Whether it is a jihadist or a Planned Parenthood assailant)

It is only the latter two that I have a problem with, regardless of their faith.

But as long as we have people who insist that every Muslim is a potential terrorist, we are not going to get very far.

My earliest datable memory was the neighborhood ruckus that celebrated the first anniversary of Hiroshima. It was explained as such by my grandfather.

Another that I recently researched was the explosion of the Island Queen, a month later. My uncle fought the fire and brought me a scorched wooden model of the boat from its gift shop. I was 3 yrs and 3 months old, which surprised me when I looked up the date.

We’re going to have another warm and dry day here.

Yeah, I know, lots of people are digging out of snow back East.

The big thing here though is that there has been no rain. This has been one of the driest and warmest starts to the climactic (starts in Dec) and precipitation (starts in July, I think) years on record, and if it doesn’t rain by the end of the first week in Jan then it will be the driest start on record.

It has long been accepted that as the global surface temperature rises the Hadley zones will migrate poleward, meaning the bands of deserts in the hemispheres will migrate poleward, after a fashion.

We are at risk here at becoming much more like (low altitude) central Baja - extremely dry desert. San Diego county west of the mountains has always been a desert in large part (except a few parts near the cost which barely have an average rainfall to make it out of the “desert” category”), and now it seems in whole we are becoming extremely arid.

And not just us, but up in LA too, which has typically been greener than San Diego. As one goes northward there is more rainfall. But the desertification is creeping northward now.

There are a few kernels of reason buried in that ideological turd.

We need comprehensive immigration reform.

We need a DACA-style amnesty and we need better control of our borders.

This would all be easier if we simply had a mandatory universal national ID card for all citizens and legal resident aliens. This would be cheaper than building a wall, and when implemented, seriously reduce any sort of welfare or public services fraud, or illegal employment, while serving as as a valid ID for all elections to minimize voter fraud.

I took my degree in Broadcast Journalism, and actually made a living working at an entertainment paper in Philly for a couple of years before I moved to the Big City to chase a music career.

Among the people working at that paper while I was there were Kurt Loder from the early MTV days and David Fricke from Rolling Stone.

Most of my journalism profs have passed on, and even from the distance of a few hundred miles, I can hear them spinning in their graves.

If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn’t eventually come out. It’s hard to mobilize a hundred thousand for a march. But what if say a dozen of us all borrowed or rented a projector that can light up 50 feet of building wall? And we all had the same image, on the same night in big cities? Hardly a new idea, but seems to have big impact for the work, time and costs.

Right. Followup questions to that statement are:

1) “Did you know this when you voted for it?”
a) If yes, “Then why did you vote for it?”
b) If no, “Why didn’t you know it?”

2) “Are you planning to do anything to fix the problems you have identified?”
a) If yes, “What?”
b) If no, “Why not? And then why say it now?”

The White House isn’t planning shit. The one year anniversary is looming and that’s the minimum amount of time people can slap on their resume without having it look ridiculous. Staffers realize this capsizing ship is being helmed by a madman and want to abandon it for safer harbors, while also being able to plausible argue that they put in the requisite time and effort. Earlier departures have mostly been people being forced out in one way or another, but now we’re going to start seeing a real exodus.

If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn’t eventually come out. You show me a highly unequal society, and I will show you a police state. Or an uprising. There are no counterexamples. None. It’s not if, it’s when.

Several people and I have been discussing this very possibility.

I hope the rich folk and the politicians are aware they allowed a lot of people to stockpile guns. Sure, some of them are in favor of Trump and Republicans right now, but when (if) they find out how they have been screwed over backed into a low income corner with no way out, they will come for them.

Also, a good portion of the military is in the same boat economics wise, and they continue to be squeezed too. They too might join into any uprising, or maybe not respond to any calls to stop it.

I don’t think gated communities are going to be safe. Leaving the country and not coming back may be the only way out.

The best con men tend to be those who had to work themselves up the ladder, which means knowing how to work the marks without overplaying your hand.

The worst tend to be those who were born into wealth and thus start life assuming that they don’t need to work the marks because if they overplay their hands then their money will protect them.

This is an interesting take on the situation on the ground in Iran from Deutsche Welle.

Video footage of protests in at least three Iranian cities prompted warnings from authorities Friday and exposed citizen anger over lost investments initiated in the era of past President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — before the lifting of international sanctions.

Iranian news agencies said small protests Friday in Tehran and the western earthquake-shaken city of Kermanshah were dispersed by police, apparently with scattered arrests.

The Iranian news agency Fars quoted a local lawmaker from the city of Neyshabour Friday as tracing the “major crisis” in adjacent Mashhad to “illegal financial institutions” that mushroomed under Ahmadinejad.

Iran’s official news agency IRNA had previously depicted Mashhad, a Shiite pilgrimage hub, as a city hit hard by the closure of Mizan, one of three banks brought down by toxic construction-related debts.

Current President Hassan Rouhani, who since 2013 has tasked Iran’s central bank with reimbursing depositors, was urged again on Wednesday by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to make good on solving the problem.
