“A workplace shooting just before 2:30 p.m. in a quiet neighborhood of Long Beach on Friday left two men dead, including the shooter, officials said.

Long Beach police said they went to a law office in the Bixby Knolls neighborhood amid reports of an active shooter at large. They said they found multiple casualties but it was no longer considered an active shooting scene.

Authorities said the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and did not engage with police. Police found a weapon at the scene.

Two men died inside the law office, in the 300 block of San Antonio Drive, said Long Beach Police Department Sgt. Brad Johnson.”

It’s kind of amazing that this guy, through sheer bullet-headed will, got a movie made that he thought would be an award winner but then turned out to be one of the worst ever. Then finds a cult following and claims that was what he was looking for all along; then gets a book and then a movie. And now his “disaster art” is going mainstream.

Possible, most modern desktop inkjet printers use aqueous inks which will expand as they freeze. OTOH those inks also contains ethylene glycol which acts as an antifreeze so it’d probably have to be pretty damned cold.

I have a tower running linux with an NVidia GTX video card. I was running Ubuntu 16.04, and wanted to upgrade to 17.04 so that I could use CUDA 9.1 with the latest g++ compiler. So I allowed Ubuntu to upgrade. That was wrong. After multiple attempts to recover the GUI, I finally just did a new install. Luckily, I made the /home its own partition, so I didn’t lose any data.

For the record, I don’t do HP.

Someone needs to tell Sarah to be careful what she wishes for. A constitutional convention now would not create a more liberal or democratic Constitution, but more likely one with no separation of church and state, federal voter restrictions, corporate representation in government (such as Hong Kong has), and elimination of term limits for POTUS, to name but a few possible outcomes.

White guy mansplains Mandarin to a native speaker, Naomi Wu. It does not go well.

Here’s the backstory. Naomi had posted a photo of some Chinese desserts that combine western snack foods (Oreos, in this case) with coffee-coconut bread.

So this guy jumps in and questions her (not the sign’s) translation of the characters ka ye ao li ao 咖椰奥利奥 (AoLiAo is Oreo’s tradename in China) as “curry Oreo”.

Her point, which Mr Limecello ignores, is using an English word that sounds phonetically like the Chinese words ka ye (abbreviation for coffee coconut). Gali 咖喱meanwhile is the Mandaran approximation of the English word “curry,” so with his obvious mastery of Mandarin he accuses *her* of mistranslating the sign. Then gets all offended when she makes fun of him on Twitter.

Her area is Shenzhen, where they mostly speak Cantonese (Yue), and he’s suggesting her Mandarin is weak because of her regional language.

I am chuckling.

Just got in from cleaning off my sidewalks from last nights snowfall. I was surprised by how much fell. They predicted up to 3” it looks like closer to 5” fell. Nice fluffy stuff because it fell while the temps were in the mid-teens.

Now they say the temps will fall throughout the day with a high of 17° and winds that will cause drifts. Low of 2° tonight and that appears to be the temps for the highs and lows all week.

At least we won’t have to worry the snow will turn to ice anytime soon.

Now they say the temps will fall throughout the day with a high of 17° and winds that will cause drifts. Low of 2° tonight and that appears to be the temps for the highs and lows all week.

At least we won’t have to worry the snow will turn to ice anytime soon.

Meanwhile in Los Angeles, currently 49 going to 74. Now chance of rain down to 10% next Wednesday…

WE NEED RAIN!!!!

Gonna be a cold cold week around these parts (Columbus Oh-i-o).

-9º F in upstate NY this morning. I am glad I grabbed a face cord of apple wood out of the jing-weed last night when I got home from work, smells nice in the woodstove. Now I just have to add eight quarts of oil to my tractor, pop on a filter, chain up, and get some more wood.

So you just make the turkey like usual and wrap it in BACON?!! Why did I not think of this?

You know what else is yummy? Take the bacon and cook as usual, but when it’s about half done, you add a mix of brown sugar, bourbon and a little water into a paste and then dump it on the bacon, spread it around and finish cooking. It’s SO good. We use it on sandwiches and in eggs.

Been doing it since 1980, when our Army-issued stove blew up, and it wasn’t worth the paperwork to draw another. An ancient loaf pan with water catches the drippings for gravy and soups. You can taste the smoke all the way through the leftovers cycle.

Definitely better than Panda Express. The only time I have that is when I’m on the tollway through Chicago and don’t want to pay to get off & look for a real restaurant. So I eat at the over pass rest areas instead.

Ah, found the menu. Panda House; Szechaun, Mandarin & Hunan Cuisine is what it says.

My project for the day is to move all my files on the old laptop’s desktop to my external drive. Taking a while. Who knew I had 23 GB of photos sitting there? That stuff kinda piles up after a while.

I don’t have the ‘real’ bender (the Parsons-White one where they rout out the guitar body to install it), I’ve got the one made by Hipshot, developed by Will Ray from the Hellacasters. It’s pretty cool, in that it installs with one screw (through the back strap button) and besides that it’s a completely un-invasive install. I’ve had it on three of my T-bodies since I got it. :)

I belong to a Tele forum where Will Ray is a member, and he was kind enough to guide me through getting it set up and gave me a lot of tips to make it work better.

It is kinda tricky. And you can’t really put the guitar on a stand with the B lever on.

I’ve been thinking about converting the B lever to another palm pedal, more like the old Bigsby ones. Hipshot sells the parts to do the conversion, and I’m a little more facile with the palm pedal on the G string than the B lever.

You’re in Hell

Standing on your feet for hours during the freezing cold, not having a single sip of water because there’s no restroom to relieve yourself, and being crushed on all sides by strangers sounds hellish — but some 2 million people do it willingly every year.

So it goes in Times Square in the hours before the ball drops at midnight on Dec. 31. This year’s forecast calls for temperatures in the teens, as well as a ground cover of snow left over from days before.

The Alabama Constitution of 1901 has been amended 926 times. It is the largest governing document in the world. Most of this has been a result of its provisions to prevent self-determination in locales with Black majorities.

Be careful what you wish for.

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our founding documents, but in ourselves.

The Constitution was written to provide a framework for governing a self-governing nation. Its lack of specificity has allowed each generation it its era to adjust the government to match that era’s thinking. It has allowed us to move from an agrarian republic with chattel slavery and voting rights only for white male property owners to a mostly metropolitan, pluralistic country which increasingly recognizes the rights of all, and all without changing the basic framework.

The thing is, self-governing countries are vulnerable to takeover by those who promise relief from the hard work of self-government.

It’s definitely pretty stable, because there’s a hard return point - it doesn’t ‘float’ like a Strat trem does. And each lever or pedal has a thumb screw for pretty quick micro-tuning of the bend interval. The kinda weird thing is that you need a bridge that both top-loads and strings through, because half of the strings go through the back of the ash tray and into the bender. Or I guess a simple top-loader would do, but I like stringing through the body whenever possible.

Here’s Will doing a demo. He’s a lot better at using it than I am.

The best advice I could ever give anyone who wanted to play guitar would be;
1= Find just one guitar that works with you. Feels good. Fits your hand. The neck works for you. And if you buy wisely and not cheaply, you will regain money if and when you sell it.
2=Get a good tube amp with headroom. No built in anything. Clean circuit. A single 10 inch speaker with 18 watts behind it would shock you.
The rest is up to you. Single coils, humbuckers, coil split, rails, blah blah. BUT good pickups will make a WORLD of difference. I can’t tell you how many players I met who had 5-10 guitars. And not a single one was worth spit.
Compression will give you sustain, Overdrive will allow you to get the grit at bedroom levels, and a good chorus and delay will deepen and widen your notes. Tune it in where your chords aren’t muddy and off you go on a lifelong search for what is rattling around in your head.
Just my humble opinion.

Video

That Parsons-White is the original, the real deal. They had to do a lot of modification to the guitar to install it - routing out a huge chunk of the body for the levers to fit and move. When Fender started actually started making Teles with B benders, the bodies were nearly a half inch thicker to make up for the body mass that was lost in the installation and routing of the guitar.

Here’s the back of Clarence’s original bender Tele. You can see that they actually removed almost half of the body mass to get the bender in there.

That Byrds doc looks pretty cool, gotta hunt that down. Thanks for posting it.

All good advice.

I used to have nearly twice as many guitars as I’ve currently got, but I had a lot of low-end stuff (I had a few more ‘quality’ guitars that I could never get with - three PRS guitars that were really nice but kinda bloodless). I really liked a lot of them and spent the time to set them up right and they’d do the job, but I’ve spent the past couple of years selling most of them off, and I’d use the proceeds from 2 or 3 guitars to buy one better one.

I use different guitars and amps for different gigs. It’s nice to have a few good tools in the box.

I have a Keeley Seafoam I never turn off. Subtle. For more phase like warble, and I do not like phaser, the CC is killer. You can change your sound any time you want. Dude. That’s just wrong. I’ll bet it played pretty nicely, despite the mangling.

A guy on the TDPRI Tele forum posted a ‘68 Tele that someone did the same thing to - took a belt sander and made his own ‘contours.’ His luthier actually cut away the contours and grafted on new wood and was able to get it back into (literally) original shape.

But I can understand it, I guess. Back before the vintage market really took off, they were just ‘old guitars’ that you could buy for nothing. I had a ‘61 Strat that I did horrible things to - I actually took a hammer and chisel to it to fit a humbucker in.

I know I played guitars in Philly pawn shops in the early 70’s that neither you or I could afford now. LOT’S of them.
They called the Les Paul the fretless wonder and it lived up to that. Weighed a ton. Top split on it too. It was my one guitar for 20 some years. I had my 66 Pro Reverb with a Univox Superfuzz (look up that price). It killed. Got an almost octavia effect up the neck. With all the clean headroom in the PR, it never got muddy.
I remember shopping for a Strat in the mid 70’s and every one I picked up the frets were not dressed. I was disgusted. Then I go to a guitar show and see mid 70’s Strats selling for 10 grand….or more…Closet Classic.
The 50’ and 60’s guitars had magic in them. I had a 60’s something SG that the neck cracked at the heel, and I didn’t know any better and let it go cheap.

re: #237 nines09

There was one point where I had four early 60s Melody Makers and three 60s SGs, all at the same time. Let ‘em all go. I don’t even remember what I got back for them.

When Mott The Hoople toured the US, the band would hit all of the pawn shops that they could to buy vintage or strange guitars. They’d use the strange guitars on stage and sell the vintage guitars when they got back to England. Mick Ralphs said that he could live for a couple months just from the profit on vintage guitars. They couldn’t believe how cheap they were in the US.

Who wanted an old guitar? If we only knew then what we know now….I sat in pawn shops and the owner(s) were glad to see me. Less likely to be held up? LOL. There was a few on Germantown Ave between Allegheny and Lehigh. It was a popping black shopping area. I know I held 50’s strats. Beat up. Rusted. Worn through finish……Just killing time. But even if I knew what I was holding I had no money…

In the early 80s, I used to see Japanese businessmen roll into We Buy Guitars on 48th Street in Manhattan and buy 40, 50 guitars at a clip. You could still buy 50s and 60s vintage for relatively cheap back then, and these guys would buy the best of We Buy’s inventory and leave the hacked-up stuff for the punters.

Now, even the hacked-up stuff brings a pretty good price. If I wasn’t a broke-ass musician in those days, I’d be sitting on a pile of money right now. Or I’d have a kickass collection.

The more these asses run their mouths, I’m half tempted (maybe 3/4) to say that maybe it’s fucking time we made NOT BEING A RICH ASSHOLE a qualification for running for office. Money does not equal smart or even qualified to do a damned thing. I’m starting to think too much money causes brain damage in a lot of the people who seem to have more than enough of it.

We’re stuck in a stupid place. The people who could be heroes and make this shit better refuse to because it’s more money in their pockets so nothing changes and it’s getting worse. And since when is it OK for Congress to vote their own salary base and increases? Hell they only work what, maybe 4 months a year altogether? A lot of these bastards don’t see constituents (unless they’re friendly to the party)when they’re supposedly home from DC. So they ain’t working hard for a pretty nice paycheck. Plus almost all of them have money to start with. We’re now looking at the biggest income inequality since the Gilded Age, something has to change.

I have a Fender Supersonic 60 watt, and about a year ago I picked up a Soldano Astroverb 1X12 with a G12H 70th Anniversary Special in it. Deal of the decade. I always wanted a fender Pro Sonic, ran into an older guitarist/ soundman who has one, says it eats tubes. Not the LO serial #. I’ve driven Dr Z, Top Hat, Marshall, Ampeg, lots of Fenders….If you get the chance to play a Tone King jump on it. Supro is back and it’s on your turf. Might be a ride, but I’d take the tour. Show up with your guitar and a favorite OD. Tell them you had one as a younger man, and you know someone who wants to hear your opinion on a Supro 1690T Coronado 35-watt 2x10” Tube Combo.

I’ve got a few - a ‘79 JMP Marshall 50, a Fender Red Knob Super 60, a Crate Palomino V32 (the St. Louis one before they started making them in Korea), a Line 6 Flextone XL (first run - the only Line 6 worth anything IMO), an Atomic Reactor 50w combo, Crate Power Block with a JBL cabinet, and a new Mustang III that gets all the play nowadays because everything else is to heavy for my old ass. :)

I’ve played through the Supros - a luthier friend of mine is hooked up with those guys, and every year he rolls out his new guitar line and Supro supplies the backline. Those Supro guys are associated with Pigtronix pedals, too.

I’d love a Tone king. And I saw Jeff Beck using a Magnatone ‘59 last year that was also killer. But I’ve wanted a Deluxe for a while, and if I can find one for a good price I’m all in.

That said - I’d like to find a guitar that was built in my birth year, 1953. So if something comes along that’s in good shape and won’t break the bank, the amp can wait a little while. :)

re: #273 makeitstop

The guitarist I was with last band was an absolute gear hound. Never satisfied. Unending tonequest. Forever. Attention span of about a month or two. He’s back in a 3 piece with our drummer. I go see them a few weeks back, I see he has a Fender Deluxe. I say “Ah. Back to Fender headroom?” He looks at me and grins; “Alessandro.” And it is. Hand wired.
He’s gone through 3 Tone Kings I know of. The first one he brought to a gig of ours some 13 years ago. It was a good room, great acoustics. It’s screaming at me in sound check warmup. He says, “Uh. I’m not sure about this one…” I’m like, “Are you effing nuts?” This will be gone sooner or later. One amp he’s kept? A old Ampeg Jet 1X12 that he uses with different cabs. Go figure.
