I felt that way in 2009, and I trusted the Obama administration to be thoughtful and long-sighted about it. Now? Nope.

I have been off since the 16th of December. I start back to work on Tuesday. I have a 10 inch telescope that I was hoping to pull out during my work break to look at a few things - Orion’s nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy. It has been cloudy the entire time I’ve been off up here near Dallas. It will clear up after I go back to work.

Hi, y’all.

It’s that weird part of the year here where the east part of the state is in the future (2018) while those of us in the west part are left behind (2017).

My New Year’s Resolution this year is the same as it is every year since 2012. Don’t write the previous year on cheques.

So far I have been successful with that resolution every year (I try to keep those resolutions simple).

10 people/square mile is an impressive population density for a state capitol!

I’ve been to Juneau and Fairbanks but not, oddly, to Anchorage (well I refueled there once- never got out of the airport). Oh and to Shemya. Don’t get me started on Shemya. Shemya is where you end up if the gods and goddesses of all the world’s religions really want to cap your ass.

What’s interesting there is that a split seems to be developing - if protesters are welcoming the security services into their midst something may be cooking under the surface in Iran.

If the Iranian government loses control of the security services, they’re in deep trouble.

Ms. Teigan should be doing more than suing the jerks on Twitter. Twitter is providing them a platform to spread slander (and possibly putting her at risk). She has enough money that if Twitter won’t enforce its terms of service and kick the dips off, in my opinion she should sue Twitter directly.

I’ve kept my story secret for the last 25 years — I didn’t want to take this to my grave

In his first interview ever, a retired Texas United Parcel Service driver reveals to “48 Hours” that he unwittingly delivered large boxes of military-grade guns and ammunition to Branch Davidian cult leader David Koresh in the months and weeks before the siege in Waco, Texas, that would capture the attention of the world in 1993. Now, as the 25th anniversary of the standoff nears, Peter Van Sant and “48 Hours” investigate the cult and what led to a deadly 51-day siege.

So the guy involved in the Wichita “swatting” resulting in the death of someone not involved at the hands of the police has always been the southbound end of a northbound mule:

Two years ago, Tyler Barriss called in multiple bomb threats to the Glendale offices of KABC-TV Channel 7, prompting a mass evacuation.

Barriss was charged and eventually convicted in connection with the hoax, one of several high-profile incidents at the time that focused attention on the act of crank-calling known as “swatting.”

Now, Barriss, 25, is accused of a much more serious hoax. He was arrested in South Los Angeles on Friday for his suspected role in a deadly prank in Kansas, police said.

Barriss allegedly made a hoax call that resulted in the police shooting of Andrew Finch, according to police and family members of the victim. Finch, 28, was killed after officers descended outside his Wichita house after getting a 911 call about a shooting at the residence on Thursday night.

Here, for example, is a very beautiful young woman (who apparently is just getting into social media) showing her makeup technique:

So, just had a chance to attend a critic’s screening of I, Tonya (a student of mine is a local film critic) and I gotta say, it’s really good. Margot Robbie creates a sympathetic portrait of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding, Sebastian Stan did a great job as her ex-husband, Paul Hauser was fantastic as the delusional Shawn Eckhardt (Tonya’s bodyguard) and Allison Janney damn near steals the show as Tonya’s acerbic - and abusive - mother. The film also has a solid soundtrack and a bit of fourth-wall breaking.

I recommend this one, especially if you happen to remember the whole Harding/Kerrigan scandal during the 1994 Winter Olympics.

This is depressing. Tyler Haire stabbed a woman at 16. He spend 3 years in jail waiting for a bed to open up at Mississippi’s only mental health assessment facility for prisoners. Despite his long, long history of mental health issues (dating back to preschool), he was found sane and able to stand trial. He took a plea deal that it’s apparent he doesn’t understand. Tyler Haire might be back out on the streets in late 2018. Oh yeah, and he’s getting no mental health treatment in Mississippi’s prison system.

Well, strictly, 2000 is in the XX Century, so that is better stated as everyone who is a minor was born in the 2000’s while every adult was born in the 1900’s (and a few in the 1800’s).

The Tampa Bay Times regales us with a cornucopia of “Florida Man” stories to round out the year… .
Florida 2017: Emotional support squirrels, a lawyer’s flaming pants and other weird news (more)

Florida crime, as always, offered a bonanza of bonkers behavior. There was the Pinellas Park man who Googled “how to rob a bank” and then robbed a bank. (Apparently he forgot to Google “how to get away with it.”)

A woman in a bikini contest in Stuart was busted for bashing a competitor in the head with her high-heeled shoe (neither won Miss Congeniality).

A Merritt Island man trashed an ATM because, he said, it gave him too much cash.

When a SWAT team raided a home in the retirement mega-community of The Villages, police found more than just the meth lab they’d expected. They also discovered it was a chop shop for stolen golf carts.

Browsing Youtube, I come across the strangest things about culture, from which I am not far secluded.

Here, for example, is a very beautiful young woman (who apparently is just getting into social media) showing her makeup technique:

What struck me as odd is she (at around 1:02 in the video) goes with age rewind eye concealer, as if she already doesn’t look young enough.

Youth-obsession is ubiquitous.

Multiple officers shot, suspect at large, bomb squad, SWAT on scene in Douglas County
More than one officer shot.

Deputies were responding to a disturbance call when shots were fired from the home near Colorado Boulevard shortly before 6 a.m., Lekander said.

“We have SWAT out there setting up and preparing to go in right now,” Lekander said at about 7:15 a.m.

Video broadcast by Denver 7 shows an Arapahoe County Sheriff Bomb Squad truck at the scene.

In a Code Red the Sheriff’s office told residents to shelter in place, avoid windows and stay away from exterior walls.

An investigation is in progress and most of County Line Road is closed down from Colorado Boulevard to University Boulevard. C-470 is closed from Quebec Street to University Boulevard.

First I’ve heard of it, but I don’t have the TV on.
Southeastern metro area, not upscale but solid middle to upper. Don’t know what those particular apartments run per month, but the area as a whole tends white and more inclined to be Republican, though we did tip Arapahoe County blue for Obama’s elections. Haven’t heard any explosions this morning as opposed to last night when the idiot neighbors were blowing off loud fireworks.

Closing County Line Road is an inconvenience for traffic, but not critical on a Sunday morning. Closing the C470 loop is a bigger matter, but that whole stretch is under major construction anyway. I hope they cleared out all the work crews when they closed that stretch — the apartment complex backs right onto the highway.

Had a disheartening conversation at lunch the other day with a friend who is in Trump’s targeted group: WWC and middle class. He detests Trump and voted for Hillary but said that Republicans are only for the rich, Democrats are only for the poor, especially minorities, and no one represents his economic class. His view is that most people vote their pocket books and do not care about the other issues, although he agrees that racists and Nazis abound among Trump supporters. Others voted Trump because they mistakenly thought he could address their economic angst. He felt Hillary ran a terrible campaign by failing to go to the key states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, all of which he thought were Democratic states, even though they are run by Republicans and he doesn’t see that the Democrats have a star candidate who can compete against Trump in 2020.

One issue that especially irritates him is the excessive cost of higher education: the poor get scholarships and the rich can buy their way into anything. But there is nothing to help people like him fund their children’s education.

re: #175 Hecuba’s daughter

Your friend sounds okay to me although I don’t agree with his argument that Democrats favor minorities and are “only for the poor”. That’s pretty darn ridiculous.

As to his concerns about funding his children’s education, that’s a perfectly legitimate point. It shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg for a university degree. Presidential Candidate Clinton had a great policy on how to make college education debt free. Perhaps it would help your friend to know that Democrats are moving in the right direction on that issue.

re: #175 Hecuba’s daughter

Well, if he’d stop thinking he’s different than the lower class, we could fix it. Help Democrats raise taxes on the rich to pay for college. I’m all for the effective rates of the 50s.

News conference ‘this afternoon.’ Shelter set up at a nearby rec center for anyone who can’t get home till they’ve cleared the scene. The same thing that happened in the cities is now happening in the rural areas. Good jobs go away, talented people move away, housing stock deteriorates, school funding declines, hopelessness takes root leading to alcohol abuse, drug abuse and crime. But white people can’t see that “they are coming for me now”. They think it was because of the failing of poor people. In fact, they would rather accuse their neighbors of failing than to question the system. Not talking about the person in the original post, but in general. As long as they can blame people for their own misery, they don’t have to face the hard truth of who is really screwing them.

I’ve heard of the “fire under the oil pan” trick before… I’ve never been too comfortable with it, myself. Several guys I know swear by it, though. I figure, with most of my vehicles, there’s enough oil and grease lying about the engine compartment that the whole thing would go up in a fiery ball if I tried it. It might work better with a smaller electric heat source if you could somehow mount it to the pan, though.

They make magnetic oil pan heaters. Also heated dipsticks. Getting the oil thin makes a big difference. Don’t know what they cost or if you have electricity close by. If gas tanks aren’t nearly full, could have condensation in fuel line

My friend (in the original post) is no fan of the wealthy — he just wants someone who will look at the problems facing the middle class. Hillary tried to propose policies but her voice was drowned out by the misogynists and the Media fascination with all things Trump. My friend thought she would have won if during the debate when Trump stalked her, she turned around, denounced him for his outrageous behavior, and asked him if his mother didn’t teach him any manners.

In the original Back to the Future, Dr Emmett Brown explained our dilemma precisely: with modern media, you need star power to capture the audience and win the Presidency. Who currently has that presence among the Democrats? Tammy Duckworth certainly has the best story but does she have the physical presence to dominate the stage?

True story: A friend of mine was stationed in the far northern reaches of Minnesota on an air force base somewhere. It got so cold one winter that all of the water-cooled trucks and cars on base froze up. The only thing still running? An old air-cooled VW Beetle.

More than glimmers of hope for these women.

Kamala Harris, Liz Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand.
Then this-

An unprecedented 51 Democratic women competed in this year’s Virginia primaries, up from only 26 who filed in 2015. Of those women, 31 are advancing to the general election in November.

In fact, Emerge Virginia, which recruits, trains, and provides a powerful network to Democratic women, trained 18 of those women — two incumbents and 16 would-be newcomers. Ten of those women are running in districts that Hillary Clinton won. In a state that went for Hillary by five points, it’s crucial for Democrats to mount a challenge and take back this governing body in 2017…

…A recent poll conducted by Lake Research Partners found that women made up 86 percent of anti-Trump phone calls to congressional offices. Women organized and spearheaded the Women’s March on Washington and affiliated marches in 650 cities and towns. Imagine what women like Ayala, who helped organize Virginia for the Women’s March on Washington, could do in elected office.

Yeah “accessibility”. Such bs. Why do they continue to kiss his fat ass while he attacks them? Call hm what he is. A fake populist who is paid for and owned by Putin.

The problem with the media in general is that they’ve accepted the premise that optics are paramount and deeply meaningful. So much “analysis” reduces down to critique of how well an individual or group are advertising themselves, rather than whether there’s validity to the claims in the ad pitch.

This is a reflection of the sheer number of “journalists” who don’t do journalism, and whose own job is not to be accurate, but to sell that they—and thus the statements they make—are sincere. Some are doing this because their job is to play “newsman” as a role, and some are doing it because they have stakes in presenting an opinion or unverified statement as having veracity, but it amounts to the same thing. Their job is impression management, and they look at the world through that lens, and often don’t have the skillset to do otherwise.

Hence David Brooks and the coalition of David Brooks imitators: their job is to sound lofty and erudite while avoiding describing reality in detail, because they are selling themselves to an audience. Hence the gulf between the op-ed content and the journalist content of newspapers.

poor baby

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach said in a new interview that President Trump’s election integrity panel has been unable to meet for months due to several lawsuits against the panel.

“Much of the past few months has been spent by commission staff answering discovery requests for information and drafting affidavits and things that like - going through the legwork of litigation, and that takes time,” Kobach said, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported Saturday.

“I’m not aware of any presidential commission that has encountered so much litigation from special interest groups,” he added.

As a result, the commission has not met since September, but will likely meet again in January, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported.
The commission has been a source of controversy since it was formed in May. Trump has repeatedly claimed without evidence that widespread voter fraud cost him the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election. Kobach, who has made similar claims, defends the panel by saying it seeks to find facts, not prove theories.

“There’s never actually been a nationwide effort to look at the scope of voter fraud,” Kobach told CNN in May. “Why wouldn’t we want to collect as much data as possible.”

The Government Accountability Office announced in October it would investigate the commission’s activities.

re: #391 The Major

Because we’re omnivores, not herbivores - why else were we given incisors and hydrochloric acid in our stomachs vs. three stomachs like ruminants ?

We’re weren’t “given” anything.

We evolved to be opportunistic eaters as a product of prevailing conditions around the Rift Valley. It turned out to be a good adaptation when you could mix up foraged food with scavenged or hunted meat on the veldt, when you were engaged in high-calorie-expense activity like nomadic living, avoiding apex predators, feeding a big brain, and a very long gestation and infant dependence period.

It remained useful in foraging, agriculture, and pastoralism because of the quantity of physical labor being done, but also because meat was a way of turning non-cultivatable land into calories.

But that adaptation is now less relevant because people don’t work the same way. Most people are sedentary, and even manual laborers are using technology that mean they’re exerting less physically even if they’re pulling long hours. We’re also less accepting of the idea of a certain section of the population dropping dead young because they wear out, compounded by diets with short-terms caloric energy benefit and long-term consequences.

Paleolithic, even Neolithic, foragers ate plant parts that contained dangerous chemicals: tubers with cyanide that could be leached to the point that you’d get sick, but still get calories to live; wild precursors to currently day vegetables with alkaline materials or other chemicals agents that deter consumption. Wild marrow and squash could kill; wild celery could cause lethal anaphylactic shock. To this day, there are “desperation foods” that cultures go to in famines that make the eater ill, but not starve. That we were “given” the ability to process these plants and not always die doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea to eat them instead of a safer domesticated variety.

And we don’t eat meat the same as our ancestors. We don’t consume any parts raw, which sets us aside from our most remote relatives who evolved those canines. We consume far less organ meat and marrow, so the panoply of nutrients we’re getting is diminished, and we eat meat at a different rate—constantly—than most people, ever, everywhere. (The exception being Arctic Circle subsistence cultures, but we differ from them in not fermenting meat, nor in eating fresh-killed raw meat, nor in diverting animals fats from human consumption to technological uses). Modern meat consumption is eating like a gouty British duke.

There’s also the problem that meat isn’t the same. Corn-fed pig , chicken, and cow are different in fat composition (white versus yellow fat) and content from pig, chicken and cow that eat “wild” diets (respectively, the first two of mixed forage, the last of mostly grasses). Fat content is generally higher, which is aesthetically pleasing—lots of forages and subsistence cultures rarely have access to, but crave animal fats enough that it’s a rarely-had celebration food, to the point of just plain drinking tallow and chewing fatty cuts—but when you eat it all the time (stares at your average burger) it fucks you up even if you’re active. Even the muscles we consume aren’t the same: we’ve bred for specific groups to enlarge, but also keep animals in a way such that those muscles aren’t exercised as much. On top of which, the animals are generally confined, often in unsanitary environments, and their unhealthiness is passed along in the form of pathogens, whatever drug and antibiotic residue remains in their meat, and in just being shittier meat in general because of being a stressed animal full of cortisol.

Meat isn’t inherently bad, but the original premises of why humans ate it are pretty distant from our current circumstances. Look at mass meat production as a larger systemic problem. We’re making meat with land that could create edible plant matter, which is inefficient, while at the same time putting less-viable land under cultivation that would be better as pasture, while at the same time the need for constant production and running more head means greater chance of overworking good pasture. Animal shit used to be a useful byproduct and/or contributed to the larger ecosystem. But now there’s so much, and composition is different, and its quantity and concentration is so great, that’s it’s no longer a plus. Grass-fed cow manure is mostly fiber, and if dried out can be used for brick-making or for burning. Corn-fed cow manure is a slurry full of methanogenic bacteria, and the practice of spraying it away means you’ve created a petri dish. Hog lagoons are a major hazard to water sources, a vector for disease, and just plain a disgusting nuisance.
