The Kinks - Better Things

Here’s wishing you the bluest sky,
And hoping something better comes tomorrow.
Hoping all the verses rhyme,
And the very best of choruses to
Follow all the doubt and sadness.
I know that better things are on the way.

Here’s hoping all the days ahead
Won’t be as bitter as the ones behind you.
Be an optimist instead,
And somehow happiness will find you.
Forget what happened yesterday,
I know that better things are on the way.

It’s really good to see you rocking out
And having fun,
Living like you just begun.
Accept your life and what it brings.
I hope tomorrow you’ll find better things.

I know you’ve got a lot of good things happening up ahead.
The past is gone it’s all been said.
So here’s to what the future brings,
I know tomorrow you’ll find better things.

Happy New Year to all my Lizards.

So, I go out to the grocery store, come back, open Chrome and… my bookmarks page chrome://bookmarks/ looks different.

Namely, it looks like the new History layout. And the edit function pops up the horrible little window that looks just like the Youtube Share pop up window.

Why, Google, why?

The NYT, as a company, clearly wants to find a way to make money in the Trump era.

This accomodation of the idiot Trumpers is hardly limited to the NYT. I listen to podcasts where clearly the hosts/speakers go out of their way to avoid speaking the plain truth about Trump’s support, even if statistically the minority of the actual population actually like Trump.

I was surprised to find I have a small AdSense balance, from putting AdSense on my hapless website.

Google seems intent on thrashing what it invents.

The reduction in the amount of information on the screen is clearly driven by small mobile device users.

But for those using a large desktop display, it just makes us scroll/click more.

The writer HL Mencken coined the word BIBLIOBIBULI in 1957 to mean ‘people who read too much’.

Henry Louis Mencken (September 12, 1880 - January 29, 1956) was an American journalist, satirist, cultural critic and scholar of American English.

On November 23, 1948, Mencken suffered a stroke, which left him aware and fully conscious but nearly unable to read or write and able to speak only with difficulty. After his stroke, Mencken enjoyed listening to Classical music and, after some recovery of his ability to speak, talking with friends, but he sometimes referred to himself in the past tense, as if he were already dead. During the last year of his life, his friend and biographer William Manchester read to him daily.

Tonight my band was supposed to bring in the New Year outside, on a trailer, covered by a tent, with patio heaters tonight on the street in a nearby town. It was cancelled early this week. Before we got 2 inches of snow. The vendors who were supplying the said trailer, tent and heaters with a generator and a big VIP party tent cancelled due to concern over the weather. Right now it is 7 degrees. At 9PM, which would be our start time, after we almost died setting up, it’s supposed to be warming up to 8 degrees but the wind will drop the feel to 10-15 below. I can live with the loss of money. And keep my fingers. I think we dodged a bullet.
I would be really upset if my guitar exploded. I can see drums splitting in my minds eye. I can see whisky. Lots of whisky.
I can also see because I’m not going to be out in that.
Slainte.
Update; It is now 3 degrees. I may have underestimated this.

I suppose it’s vaguely possible that when you put that many people in that tight a space, plus whatever warmth drifts out of the subways… it’ll be a few degrees warmer than the actual air temperature ten feet up or a block away.

Nope. Outside event.

Yeah, no. I’m glad they canceled, it would have been miserable.

I did a benefit at a local high school a couple of years ago. In February. I thought it was going to be in the auditorium, but I got there and they pointed me to a stage.

In the middle of the football field.

We played the minimum we could get away with and got out of there.

Man, I did not order this weather. It is cold enough now that despite no clouds it is snowing.

Currently it’s -2F, with a low predicted of -14.

Unusually for Nebraska, the panhandle will be warmer than Omaha. Omaha is expected to get to -23 tonight.

The car really didn’t want to start this afternoon.

Shortest wedding I’ve ever been to: My cousin’s fall wedding in October one year. The day before, everything was picturesque and beautiful. The morning of dawns… 20 degrees. All the leaves have fallen, the flowers are closed up. The bridesmaids refused to get out of the limo in their beautiful strapless dresses. My mom, saint that she is, threw an impromptu back-up reception at her house because the bride and groom had no backup plan for what was intended to be an outdoor-only event. Yeah, that marriage didn’t last long.

Note: the description of “Adrenochrome” matches that delivered by Anthony Burgess and Hunter S Thompson in fiction…not the actual neurotoxic substance, which might cause euphoria, but most absolutely fucks you ups in ways that suggest schizophrenia.

ETA: the italicized part is from Wikipedia, and on further pursuit I’m skeptical of that entry, but I’m going to not edit it out of my statement because it’s been up long enough that it’s better to just admit the lazy use of citation rather than change it.

Kind of like how the rest of Pizzagate echoes the details present in the Satanic Panic arrests/trials (down to the fictive basement featured in the McMartin Preschool case, I think?)…this is not free invention or making shit up. It’s taking a mix of actual fiction, conspiracy-theory story-as-truth, and urban myth to create a narrative that sounds familiar, and thus might have some validity.

NYPD dogs feel the bite of near-record NYE temps

Not everyone froze their tail off in Times Square by choice.
The NYPD brought a contingent of police dogs to the Crossroads of the World as part of its massive New Year’s Eve security crackdown — but didn’t put them in winter coats!

The Post spotted three German Shepherds and a Belgian Malinois braving Sunday’s cold as they trotted and jumped alongside their human partners, while the mid-afternoon mercury hovered around 15 degrees with a wind-chill of just 1 degree.

Beautiful animals, my husky lab mix will either lay on the picnic table all day or stand in my frozen above ground pool.

When I was on my India visit, the topic of the weather came up frequently, as everyone wanted to know how we were enjoying their “cold winter weather” (68 degrees F for a low; 20 degrees C). When I told them that temperatures routinely dipped below -20 degrees C and that we almost always saw one or more days with a low temperature of -40 degrees (F and C), most of them shuddered and stared as if we were crazy for wanting to live here. One adventurous soul, however, volunteered himself to bravely come over one winter and experience ice fishing with us. Heh heh.

About 10 years ago, I had a friend in Dallas (originally from Louisiana) that I had talked into visiting MN just before Christmas. About a week before he was going to come up he had to cancel because he got too busy at work. We were both kind of glad he bailed because that week was as cold as it is this weekend. He dodged a bullet and it would have been a pain trying to justify why I live in such a place.

The next time I visited him there was an ice storm, and he had gotten back together with his awful ex-boyfriend so that was the end of my trips to Dallas.

Too bad for him.

Me? Happy cause the Steelers won!

It was a pretty slam-bang finish for the NFL playoff picture. My old man can go eat a bag of dicks for having to miss out. Though to be fair, watching the Big 10 go 7-0, and maybe 8-0 pending Michigan’s game tomorrow morning, is also a worthy way to spend one’s attention.

Hanson Fitness, which boasts such celebrity clients as Rihanna, Julia Roberts and Tom Cruise, will be holding naked personal fitness classes to kick off 2018.

On Jan. 5 at 6 p.m., the fitness studio will have its first nude personal training session. The studio initially plans to host three sessions a week: one mixed, one for men, and one for women.

I come firmly down on the side of punching fucking Nazis, and I always will. I understand the arguments for non-violence and I can only envy the supreme grace it must take to read this list [the list of those killed by white supremacists and Nazis this year in the USA] and not feel such rage welling up somewhere deep inside you that rules be damned there won’t be a fucking Nazi that is safe in America until they’ve learned to stay under their rocks in the shadows where they belong. I lack that kind of grace.

These cowards, these pathetic excuses for men and women, would have us believe that there is something to be admired about quivering abject fear, that there is virtue in their twisted misapplication of logic and morality. They think that if they scream enough people will listen.

Quarter after eight in Mythical Time Zone.

Fortunately I live in a somewhat sane area as far as chowderheads firing guns into the air on New Year’s (no one does that here).

I was visiting my grandmother several years ago in Florida. I was out on the screened porch talking with my step-father when someone fired a gun into the air. The bullet came down through her porch roof, hit the cement floor between us (about eighteen inches from each of us), and buried itself into the cement.

We called out the sheriff, who made a big deal about coming into the area with lights and sirens (likely to stop the nuts with guns from continuing to shoot into the air). The deputy took a report, but there really wasn’t much they could do other than pry out the bullet from the cement (that took them some time).

Another time someone sent up fireworks over my yard and set my clothesline on fire (lesson not to have clothes up on New Year’s Eve).

Truthfully, the most beautiful (and terrifying) winter scape I ever saw was returning from a winter retreat along the shores of Lake Mille Lacs. The ice breakup there results in a terrifying display of nature’s power, as the melting lake water forces the ice floes ashore to breach the beaches. It’s scary as all get out, but it’s worth seeing for anyone who isn’t used to life in the winterlands.

He’s like “It’s already -15F”. “Yeah, but I have a backpack full of extra layers”. scribble. “My private number. Call when you get done. If I’m not busy I’ll give you a ride. I got that ride home and I’m toasty now instead of being about a 1/3 of the way hoofing it. re: #282 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Lots of references to “globalists”, is apparently against the anthem protests happening at the NFL, and allergic to paragraph breaks, it appears.

Let’s see how I’m doing with the figuring out what the refurbed, rebadge and repainted version of old canards are…

Judenbolschevismus => Kulturbolschevismus => Kulturmarxismus => Cultural Marxism.

Sexualbolschevismus => Gaystapo, Gay Lobby, Gay agenda.

The canard which accuses Jews of trying to control the world, but also graphic imagery depicting Jews, or their supporters, as trying to control the world. Examples of this imagery include Nazi cartoons that depict Jews as octopuses, encircling the globe. A more recent example is the 2001 re-printing of Henry Ford’s antisemitic text, The International Jew in Egypt, with the same octopus imagery on the front cover.

Gets transformed into accusations of globalists trying to control the world, but also graphic imagery depicting globalists, or their supporters, as trying to control the world. Examples of this imagery include conspiracy theorist cartoons that depict globalists as octopuses, encircling the globe.

A canard found in The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, but dating to before that document, is that Jews are more loyal to world Jewry than to their own country. Since the establishment of the state of Israel, this canard has taken the form of accusations that Jewish citizens of countries such as the United States are more loyal to Israel than to their country of residence.

Gets transformed into A canard found in alt-right conspiracy theories, but dating to before them, is that Muslims are more loyal to Islam than to their own country.

And it goes on and on… And some are too blind to see that they are being fed the same old toxic waste, only refurbed and rebadged, and with a snazzy new paint job. And these are only the handful of canards and myths I can easily transform.

For more: Antisemitic canard (Wikipedia)

That dress is just. I’m sorry. Who wears couch prints like that?

Also hi there is a rum and coke half in me and I didn’t measure the rum so.

This is my only drink today because I ran 13.1 today and will run 13.1 tomorrow (really I have no sense of scale I went and got a PhD and see where that led me) and doing that hungover seems like an awful plan.

We are celebrating the new year with homemade onigiri (my first! and not bad) and I will probably do some stitching/knitting afterwards.

I think it looks like leftover wrapping paper. And those shoes—oh my.

I’m drinking Cockspur’s Rum and coke (Pepsi actually) in fond memory of the many New Year’s eves I spent in Bermuda and that was my go-to drink. Cheers.

To expand on this, and this is roughly remembered: the citrus notes were great. DON’T add lime; it is better without it. Unique, but very sippable. Not a gin that draws a huge amount of attention to itself but plays nicely with the tonic. (Versus, say, Monkey 47 which is just like HERE I AM LISTEN TO ME which I am not the biggest fan of.)

Watching “Train to Busan,” a Korean zombie film, and while it’s generally good and tense, it’s an especially egregious version of the zombie virus having incredibly dramatic timing with regard to when the infection matures into zombie status.

I have a bottle of the Monkey; it hit big about 3-4 years ago now and has a name. In my personal gin classification system, it is firmly in the “statement” category and I have a strong preference for the “sippable” category so.

I really need to start writing this shit down.

mr. klys gave me a gin advent calendar for our anniversary …and then a single note juniper calendar (with the juniper grown in various locations) for Christmas. So I’ve been working through lots of new gins on a sporadic basis. Been doing the impressions on Twitter, the thread is here if you want to monitor that.

re: #231 Barefoot Grin

My 2017 pet peeve is the use of the “that” for “who.” It should be, “Literally all the people who….”

A grammar lesson that has been forgotten.

That is all.

The ESL textbooks we use here are published in the USA, and suggest that “that” may be used as a replacement for “who.” The books avoid the whole “who-whom” issue altogether. I’ve forgotten what my former UK-published texts advised, but I’m pretty sure they insisted “who” is for people and “that” is for everything else.

Anyway, I told my students that grammar texts often disagree, as grammar rules are almost always descriptive, not proscriptive. Grammar evolves, and it seems the popular consensus allows “that” for people and speakers are avoiding “whom” because no one can remember when it should be used anyway.

Back the day, I remember grammar purists bewailing the use of “impact” as a verb, and the construction “impactful” as an adjective. Now, no one bats an eye.
