A Beautiful Response to Misogyny: Heather Maloney, “Don’t Be a Pansy”

Music • Views: 29,833

You believe in the brittle
In the branches you whittle
You shave with your blade ‘til your points have been made
You sing praise to the rigid
God forbid you admitted
Any time you’ve been wrong, you’ve been right all along

You can board up the windows
You can lock all the doors
You can patch every crack in the ceilings and floors
But the light’s gonna find you
And maybe you’ll see
To be tough - it ain’t strong
To be closed - it ain’t free

And there was a storm last night
Took down your power lines
I watched the great oak tree
Fall right down to its knees

And there was a storm last night
It took down your power lines
Wasn’t a petal out of place
On every pansy’s face

But you’re stone as a statue
And I’m looking right at you
But I know you won’t budge
Like a bull, like a grudge
Don’t be moved, don’t be touched, don’t be tender
Don’t you ever surrender
And whatever is feminine, don’t let it in

And there was a storm last night
Took down the power lines
I watched the great oak tree
Fall right down to its knees

And then in the morning light
The patches of pansies bright
Brighter from all the rain
A flower whose very name…

You spat in the faces
With their glasses and braces
And everyone you put down was a jewel in your crown
Precious and pretty
That’s what you called me
‘Cause I’m soft and I’m free and I dance in the rain

You believe in the brittle
You won’t bend just a little
But can you feel the storm coming right for your pride?

And there was a storm last night
Took down the power lines
I watched the great oak tree
Fall right down to its knees

To be fair, my dad raised this point, at least the final won’t be another Alabama vs. Clemson. One of those two will be eliminated in this game.

Clemons (sic) has a total of 99 yards of offense through three quarters. Pitiful.

I think the one that really torqued me the wrong way was Michigan. I come from Big Ten country and my dad was a Big Ten graduate (proud son of a Boilermaker here!), and them losing what was almost a perfect bowl season really pissed me the hell off. Goddamn it, Michigan, the one time I actually WANT you to win and you blow it. I knew there was a reason I hated you.

It’s just a white blob here as the skies are rather overcast, which is keeping the temperature a balmy 34° F.

5500’ overcast. I guess the moon is up there?

29 degree air, 21 degree wind chill, 28 consecutive hours at or below freezing (we hit 32 today!).

Yeah, that’s not really “winter”, but in Central Texas, it’s an oddity. Happens once every couple of years.

I am in love with Megan Rapinoe. Yes, yes, I know, but I played soccer for years when I was a kid and I know a brilliant attacking midfielder when I see one. Oh, and I’m also in love with Kevin De Bruyne, but not in that way. I’m an old, straight, white fart.

Once upon a time I fell in love with a UGA graduate. Met her in Steamboat at work, she wanted to spend a summer in Colorado to go to Red Rocks concerts and mountain bike the summer after her sophomore year. I chased her all the way to Georgia the following May and we saw Widespread Panic three nights in a row at The Classic Center in Athens. It was finals week, and somehow she found the time to hang out with me and go to concerts and get A’s on all her exams (smart as a whip, this gal is). She’s married to a dude who can grow a way better beard than I and lives in Denver for the Red Rocks concerts and mountain biking. We’re still friends.

Point is, I’m sure she’s *very excite* about the upcoming college sportsball championship. And I still love her.

Very good analysis. This paragraph in particular shows some people Beijing understand the Trumps better than most journalists in the USA (cough - Maggie Haberman - cough)

After the summit, the Pangoal Institution, a Beijing think tank, published an analysis of the Trump Administration, describing it as a den of warring “cliques,” the most influential of which was the “Trump family clan.” The Trump clan appears to “directly influence final decisions” on business and diplomacy in a way that “has rarely been seen in the political history of the United States,” the analyst wrote. He summed it up using an obscure phrase from feudal China: jiatianxia—“to treat the state as your possession.”

That’s exactly how Trump & Co. think of themselves — the owners of the USA. In China, the emperors had the same deep-seated belief until, suddenly, they weren’t in power anymore. I await the day when the same reality smacks Donnie Smallhands in the face.

re: #29 wheat-dogg

Osnos also makes an important point: China does not consider itself to be a moral leader of the world, as the USA does (did). It’s not going to spread socialism with Chinese characteristics all over the world, or insist its client states observe human rights, freedom of the press, environmental standards, etc. It’s not going to offer famine relief, or earthquake recovery assistance, because it’s the noble thing to do. It’s not going to take in refugees, and it’s not going to liberalize its immigration laws to welcome foreigners into its fold.

China will, however, do everything it can to protect its borders, its economy, and its “harmonious society.” The Party does not want the Outside World to intrude on the Inside World, so China will hold every other nation at arm’s length.

it will be spun as the liberal courts forcing a gay agenda on Christians and punishing those who do not bend to the iron hand of gay propaganda

the nuances are beyond them: there is the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and there is the civil status of marriage. There was a time when the two were identical, over recent centuries the two have diverged, and the key point is that the Sacrament is personal and subjective and any person or church can refuse to grant or accept that status between two people for any reason.

But in our country (and most of the rest of the enlightened and civilized world) marriage is a universal human right between any two adults, regardless of gender.

It’s like I’ve said before, Donny doesn’t see himself as President of the United States of America, he sees himself as CEO of United States, Inc. Which is what frustrates him so greatly, that the presidency does not afford him the same level of unquestioned power that he had as CEO of his own company. He can’t rule by fiat, he can’t fired people on a whim, he has to actually treat others with some modicum of deference even if he refuses to respect them, and he can’t bribe the local law enforcement into looking the other way.

It’s why he’s just checked out of the job and left it to his underlings to do, because he gets to take the credit for any successes and any failures he can (and does) blame entirely on them.

But in our country (and most of the rest of the enlightened and civilized world) marriage is a universal human right between any two adults, regardless of gender.

The evangelical crowd tied their own noose on this matter by spending the longest time using the letter of civil law to attack gay couples. Whether it was taking medical decisions out of the hands of a partner, enforcing final wishes, barring them from adoption, or other matters where the word “marriage” was written explicitly into the law. They made it so there was simply no substitute for marriage in the law and turned what might have been viewed simply as a religious ceremony into a civil right that the courts had to protect.

Exactly. Even if he wanted to be President, which I still doubt, he’s learned that it’s not the kind of job he is suited for. He wants to be a petty dictator, like he is as CEO of Trump Org., but so far the American system of government is preventing him from running the country by fiat.

Meanwhile, his part-time presidenting means no one is captain of the ship, and the various factions within the Executive Branch are free to do what they like, except when it impinges upon the goals of another faction. Osnos’ article mentions this chaotic situation, as foreign leaders and reps no longer go to the White House to ask for things. They just go directly to whatever executive office would best help them.

If Trump had a sharp mind and a willingness to work hard at his job, we would be in a world of hurt. So far, he only seems interested in maintaining a façade of being president cum petty dictator. If letting him retreat to the golf course is the price we pay to keep the American system of government intact, I’d say it’s worth the expense.

I spent some time over the weekend watching a series of videos by one of those precious metals wonks, Mike Maloney. He argues that governments and markets tend to follow the same cycle over and over, and he suggests that the last government action before a massive recession is tax cuts + attempts to jigger the budget to compensate for the tax cuts. And guess what the GOP controlled Congress has just done and is trying to do. He also predicted that a recession would happen while Trump is in office.

I don’t agree with everything he says or advises, but I believe he’s right about the economy taking a turn for the worse under Trump. The GOP have taken a perfectly healthy economy and ruined it, just to give their donors a nice little Christmas present.

Nope. Why don’t you enlighten us, Biff?

He’s talking about this.

Former US Navy sailor Kristian Saucier— who was sent to prison for taking photos inside a nuclear submarine — has been released from prison and put under house arrest.

At issue for Saucier is that “punishment isn’t doled out evenly,” and people like Hillary Clinton, John Podesta and Huma Abedin have committed more serious acts.

“I’m not trying to minimize what I did, I made a mistake, but the photos I took were confidential, which the lowest tier of classification is,” he said. “Whereas the information they mishandled was top secret SEI which is the highest— and I got a year in prison and she was allowed to run for President and there doesn’t appear to be any kind of punishment for what they did.”

Up to a point. His particular downfall, aside from the drug addiction, was his belief that only he knew all the answers. Trump shares some of that self-delusion of being the smartest guy in the room.

They are playing with dynamite if they go after all three.

Their strongest voting base, the elderly, will fight them big-le’ and they can’t afford that voting wise.

So, they will most likely try to start at some lower age (anyone say, 50 right at the time the cuts start) and try to sell it as “you need to be saving for your own retirement in the private market…look how successful it is, so much better than the government running it.”

But Social Security is Social Security, and even the elders might balk at any change at all. They will be looking to their kids and grandkids futures.

It will be much the same with Medicare. Elders will say “Do Not Touch” and might try to protect that too for the future.

Medicaid might be their best hope, but even that has is now being expanded in red states. So…

Good luck GOP.

That’s the biggest thing right there. Hitler was just as lazy as Trump, quite frankly - even in the cauldron of WW2, he was still living like some Bohemian artist.

On D-Day, the reason German forces didn’t deploy their available armor in the Normandy area (not that there was a huge amount of it) was because Hitler was asleep until about 10 A.M…….and no one dared to wake him up. That right there is flagrant irresponsibility from all involved.

There is a lot of evidence that Hitler was addicted to opioids and received regular injections, especially before important events. His personal doctor was never allowed to be away from the Führer for any length of time. Hitler was probably just whacked on Eukodal when the Allies landed, and there is evidence that his famous and much-memed flip-out scene in the Bunker at the end of the war was related to withdrawal from his favorite drug cocktail.

What if Hitler hadn’t declared war on the US after Pearl Harbor? The US was already de facto at war with Germany, guarding the shipping lanes and even engaging in military actions with U-boats in the Western Atlantic, and I am sure it would not have taken long for the active war to begin after Germany’s Axis partner Japan had attacked the US.

That was a Super Beetle. And it was not a stock engine to begin with. It was a rebuild of a build.

Ah, OK. I could tell they were modding the engine, but without a commentary I wasn’t sure.

The US was already de facto at war with Germany, guarding the shipping lanes and even engaging in military actions with U-boats in the Western Atlantic, and I am sure it would not have taken long for the active war to begin after Germany’s Axis partner Japan had attacked the US.

Germany had, in fact, already sunk one of our destroyers, the Reuben James, in addition to a lot of our shipping. That is how dedicated we were as a nation to NOT getting into the war. Imagine if, today, ANY country intentionally sank one of our ships.

I owned an older, early 60’s bug when I was a teen in high school. The heater boxes rotted out, you froze to death without a gas heater, died in a head on crash, and the stock engine left something to be desired. But it was cheap to run, great in the snow, and was fun to drive. And you would never ever be able to pass a Caddy or muscle car. They would not allow it. Except in the snow as you waved to them as you flew on by.
Oh and one other big plus was in the city you could park where other cars could not fit. Huge bonus.

I’m inclined to agree, but the smart move by Hitler after Pearl might’ve been to denounce Japan and declare his neutrality to see if domestic political pressure might’ve kept the US focused on Japan instead. Not that Hitler was making many smart decisions by then.

re: #135 Dr Lizardo

That’s the biggest thing right there. Hitler was just as lazy as Trump, quite frankly - even in the cauldron of WW2, he was still living like some Bohemian artist.

On D-Day, the reason German forces didn’t deploy their available armor in the Normandy area (not that there was a huge amount of it) was because Hitler was asleep until about 10 A.M…….and no one dared to wake him up. That right there is flagrant irresponsibility from all involved.

Heh. Re-fighting wars is always fun…
AFAIK, military historians have generally agreed with the assessment that the Germans’ problem with countering the Normandy invasion wasn’t so much that they didn’t deploy their armored units, but that they were deployed, for the most part, in the wrong places. Mainly because 1) Hitler assumed that Rommel ( to whom he had assigned the “Atlantic Wall” defenses) knew what he was about; and 2) they failed to adequately see through Allied deceptions about where the actual Overlord invasion sites would be. But of course, Hitler’s late-rising habits (drug consumption notwithstanding) didn’t help much.

It’s interesting, though that recent research has uncovered a good deal of info about how much the Germans relied on “performance-enhancing” pharmaceuticals during WWII: I wonder if Allied forces were speeded up as much?

My brothers and I competed for Worst Car. Not intentionally, mind you!

Hawaii Bro purchased a series of Renaults, after bad experiences with two Citroens, including one that blew all of its expensive hydraulic fluid onto the ground one morning on a whim.

I started out with a 14 year old, rusty MGB that made every drive an adventure in roadside mechanics.

It wasn’t the worst.

That prize went to my Idiot Brother’s Simca 1000. That was a little rear-engined, watercooled boxy sedan with about 50 hp when it was new. It wasn’t new. It was like a Renault Dauphine, but worse.

On its maiden voyage, a trip out to Toledo to find an apartment for his upcoming stint in graduate school, half way across Pennsylvania, it decided it wasn’t watercooled. Or at least, had no water cooling it. We stopped at EVERY SINGLE REST STOP after that to top up the radiator.

The slightest hill was too much for it. On the PA turnpike, you had to put on your flashers if you weren’t going at least 45. So, half the time, our flashers were on.

The beauty of the Beetle was everything can be replaced. The entire front suspension beam, the entire floor pan, fender, doors, etc. all could be bought and easily replaced. They were designed to do that. And they are simple to fix if you have the tools and the space.

I knew a guy that restored them. He loved people that had them and were worried about rust or a blown engine. He could talk them down in price and then he would take it to his garage and replaced all that needed replaced. He made a pretty good business redoing them and selling them.

Maybe. They still had far more resources (including population) than the Germans did. See “The Wages of Destruction” by Tooze where he argues that the Germans could not - full stop - ever win WWII because they did not have enough iron, coal & oil. Those resources were what they were desperate for when they invaded in June 41.

Did lend lease make the Soviet victory easier? Certainly. But once the great move east of the Urals was accomplished they were never in as harsh a situation as the English.

Big bonus was you could park that sucker in the city much easier. That was when luxury liners ruled the roads. We would go down to Pop Edwards at 16th and Market (Dark Budweiser which I never saw anywhere else) and the original Khyber Pass which was a great place when it first opened.

I used to be able to fill that thing up for under three bucks and still have gas left at the end of the week!

After that one, I got a Fastback. I drove it into the city one day to put up posters for a gig at Dobbs, and rode it a little too hard on the way home.

Aluminum carb. Smoke from the engine compartment. Lifted the lid and the carb was melted sideways. Fire department put it out and I junked it and bought an Olds Vista Cruiser for $150. Man, I could haul all kinds of gear in that sucker.

One of the weirdest things I ever heard from the Right was “Why did Roosevelt go to war with Germany? They didn’t do anything to us!” Not only is this not true (see reference to Reuben James above), but also Hitler declared war on us a few days after Pearl Harbor!

The bigger question is why that even comes up?

For the same reason “the Civil War wasn’t about slavery!”

Their lack of shame notwithstanding, Democrats have gotten better at framing the dialog. On both ACA and the Tax Scam, they were able to convey that both were really bad ideas.

But you’re right re being the minority. They were able to get people to realize both were bad ideas but were unable to stop Republicans charging ahead with them.

We got one out of two, which is 50% better than I would have expected. People, it seems, are listening.

I’m inclined to agree, but the smart move by Hitler after Pearl might’ve been to denounce Japan and declare his neutrality to see if domestic political pressure might’ve kept the US focused on Japan instead. Not that Hitler was making many smart decisions by then.

He had already made enough threats against the Jewish industrialists arming and funding Great Britain

The Russian Armed Forces has unveiled its latest cutting-edge weapon in a New Year’s greetings video: cuddly puppies.

After a year of showing off its military might in Syria, the Defense Ministry has taken a softer approach in a one-minute video showing dozens of puppies sharing food and cuddling with each other. Older dogs are shown playing with unidentified officers.

In the Chinese calendar, 2018 is the year of the dog, so many Russians are using dogs in their holiday greetings this season.

Over 3,000 dogs are employed in the Russian armed forces.

Another ex-Beetle owner here: many years back, I downsized my automotive expectations into a ‘74 Super Beetle. I still miss the thing, despite its problems: Though not that old, it had been in a (needless to add, undisclosed) wreck, and poorly repaired: so the top and windows never fit or worked right, and the engine had the annoying (and amazingly un-diagnosable) problem of randomly cutting out. But I still regret having to sell it.

I eventually replaced it with the nearest thing to a Beetle I could find: a new ‘78 VW Rabbit: a great, simple car that saw me through years of rough driving. Including the worst wreck I was ever in (it reminded of the old Model-T joke: “I want to be buried in it, ‘cuz there was never a hole it couldn’t get me out of”)

I think as much Republican dirt that can be dug up and mentioned by the Dems and pushed in the media the better. It helps build a narrative about how much they protect Trump and obstruct justice. It needs to be made into them ignoring the U.S. Constitution for power all to screw over the middle and lower classes.

It should not be seen as sport, it is the type of facts the Republicans would and do use against Democrats. It is politics.

It might not touch the True Blue Trumper but anyone conservative with half a brain may pay attention and maybe cause them to vote Democrat.

It also might help get more Democrats out to vote.

The Democrats need to get tough and play tough. Keep it factual, sure, but keep pounding Republicans are un-American and all about power and money for the ultra-rich.

They had some money. Beautiful place. Before all the money bought up everything. We would go down a few times every winter. His lived there and worked at the fish store at Ship Bottom. Back then there was very little on LBI. And very little on Rt 72 from Philly. Halfway there in the middle of nowhere my Roach quit and me and my friend sat in stunned silence freezing and starting to freak on a winter night for about an hour before a car passed and we flagged it down. It was just luck it was going east. Older man and woman drove us to Willie’s house. Called a girl friend up next day, and went back and the sucker started up. We joked that it was trying to kill us.

Geez, what in the world would be causing this? Surge in requests for Nazi, KKK ink prompts Maine tattoo shop to say ‘stop asking’

It’s always been the policy of Rockland-based Siren Song Tattoo that the artists who work there won’t tattoo messages of hate, including Nazi and white supremacist imagery.

But it’s only recently that the business’s owners, Alison and Justin Wheeler, felt they needed to publicly state that they’re not in the business of making hateful sentiments permanent with body ink.

“So we wouldn’t normally do this but there have been an alarming amount of people wanting Nazi/KKK tattoos this year! So we are declaring now that we do not create images or recreate images that pertain to those parties and like parties,” a Dec. 23 post on the shop’s Facebook page read. “Get over it and stop asking us, we ain’t about that shit.”

Its profile included a gab dot ai so I blocked it too.

It must be sad seeing Trump exposed as an utter failure despite majorities in both Houses.

They also ran TV ads and even sponsored a convention about how offended they were that a Dem senate voted down a bunch of Bush’s judicial nominees. They were conspicuously silent when McConnell refused to even allow votes on Obama’s nominees.

BREAKING: Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch announces he will retire from the U.S. Senate after his term.

Evan McMullin should run for the seat. Though, the party will probably push for Huntsman or Romney

He should. My hope was that he’d run for the seat that Chaffetz vacated. I like McMullin. He’s a conservative but not a jerk.

Now I’m starting to wonder who’s paying these people a lot of money to get out so that their replacements can say “I didn’t take your Medicare away.”

The fewer GOP incumbents are running, the easier it will be for the Democrats to win the mid-term elections.

More likely, it’s who’s offering them well-paid no-show jobs to reward them for the tax bill.

Yeah, but the challengers to those “replacements” are probably going to be running on a platform of “I’ll give you your Medicare back”; I wonder which approach will be more of a winner

“So we wouldn’t normally do this but there have been an alarming amount of people wanting Nazi/KKK tattoos this year! So we are declaring now that we do not create images or recreate images that pertain to those parties and like parties,” a Dec. 23 post on the shop’s Facebook page read. “Get over it and stop asking us, we ain’t about that shit.”

how far do we have to go into the comments section before we encounter the argument “It’s illegal to turn down customers asking for a gay wedding cake, so why is is it legal to turn down one asking for a Nazi tattoo?”
