Republicans Are Relentlessly Working to Subvert the Trump/Russia Investigation

Politics • Views: 29,470

Greg Sargent has a good summation of the latest developments in the Republican Party’s outrageous ongoing effort to subvert the investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia: How bad is the Republican coverup on Trump and Russia? We may soon find out.

In an interview with me, Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut — the No. 2 Democrat on the House intel committee — said that Democrats are seriously exploring the possibility of issuing a minority report that details (among other things) the degree to which Republicans tried to impede a full investigation, should that end up happening. In this scenario, the public would at least have a clear sense of just how far Republicans went to protect President Trump and his top officials from accountability.

“It’s in both the Democrats’ and the Republicans’ interests to … write a report based on a common set of facts,” Himes told me. “It would be a tragedy if the report has a minority section that says, ‘Look, we wanted to talk to these two dozen witnesses and weren’t able to do so.’”

Fox News manages to not mention the Colorado shooter was a neo-nazi Alt-Righter. Of course all the commenters are certain that the shooter is a “Libtard” a “Leftist” a “Mexican” a “Dreamer” etc. etc.

It’s a daily thing with my congressman Andy Biggs (R-Trump’s Small Intestine, but should be Arizona) to post something trashing Mueller to Facebook. He also goes on Fox News to babble as well. Biggs gets a lot of pushback and mockery on this along with his unwillingness to hold town halls.

But, but, Candidate Trump told me NYC was a crime ridden hellscape without stop-and-frisk

“… Major crime in New York City has continued to decline almost across the board in the four years of the de Blasio administration, to the lowest rates since New York City began keeping extensive records on crime in the early 1960s. Crime is literally off the charts — the low end of the charts. To compare today’s crime rate to even that of ten years ago is to observe a breathtaking decline. …”

Hitting on something from the previous thread regarding the uptick of Nazi support among youth: I think part of the problem is their connections to the war are becoming more distant.

I remember my grandfather telling me stories about fighting Nazis during his time in the Navy and realized at an early age what sick bastards they are.

Now, most WWII vets have passed away and we’ve entered an age where Hitler and Nazis are romanticized on a lot of levels, like it’s just a normal nostalgia trip and not one of the most evil, fucked up regimes there ever was.

So I saw in the last thread that Hatch is retiring and some other Republican Congressman is also.

I bet we hear of others in the next few months too. It really does seem they know it might be tougher to hold on in the future after their “tax reform” and attempts to kill healthcare.

The other factor probably figuring in is the Freedom Caucus idiots making it tough on any Republican that doesn’t vote their way. In other words it’s getting harder to be an asshole when you have massive assholes trying to run the party.

What we need is something that starts to blow the Freedom Caucus up. Might be dead girl, live boy time.

One thing for sure, we are seeing GOP retirements like never before. Most Congressmen hold their seats until they can no longer due to health, or they die if they can still get elected. Still getting elected seems to be a problem now.

Been hearing that crap for years. “See, fascism works! It isn’t inherently racist/violent/etc” while utterly ignoring how that government was barely functional most of it’s existence and depended on violence and their own form of racism (as well as going along with Germany’s demands for antisemitism).

The worst version of this came from Pournelle/Niven’s novel “Inferno” which whitewashed Mussolini in the usual pro-fascist Pournelle manner. It was interesting theologically in a way that fit my sense of Universalism but the final twist was difficult at best.

I’m guessing Preznit The Sun Shines Out Of My Ass isn’t going to mention this.

The U.S. dollar started 2018 on the wrong foot, hitting its lowest point since mid-September.
In fact, the greenback lost value for almost all of 2017. It plummeted despite factors that typically drive up the dollar, like the passage of tax cuts and an overall healthy U.S. economy.

But compared to the world’s most traded currencies, the dollar fell nearly 10% last year. It’s down 2% since December 15, according to the ICE dollar index.

I don’t love Pournelle either, but he portrayed Mussolini as a penitent, not a good guy — and the only claim he made was that M. wasn’t as bad as Hitler in the beginning, though he became so.

And after all, he was In hell.

So, my wife got me a new Fitbit for Christmas, after I lost my first one somewhere. The model is the Charge 2, which does a lot of cool stuff. Cool, I thought, I can better track my fitness with a better version of the Fitbit.

Went to set it up on my laptop. Didn’t work.
Went to set it up on a second laptop. Didn’t work.
Ordered and received another laptop. Wouldn’t set up on that.
Tried setting it up on my Kindle. Nope.
Got the app for my phone. My model Fitbit is not listed in the app.

If this wasn’t a present from my wife, I’m pretty sure I’d have taken a hammer to it by now.

Wonder what #1 Romney fangirl, Jen Rubin will do now.

Answering my own question—Jen still hearts Mitt, and has some pie-eyed vision of who the asshole is:

Romney from the Senate perch may test whether there is a GOP worth defending. If he can organize a center-right opposition to Trump both on policy and character grounds (including financial conflicts), the GOP might still have a pulse, although he could well find himself friendless in a party that has become co-opted by Trump…

while Romney is a strong conservative, it is very easy to see him playing deal-maker with Democrats on issues such as infrastructure, trade, job training, and research and development funding. He might even have the nerve to oppose unqualified nominees.

Be still Jen’s heart—once a fangirl, always a fangirl.

So ran a couple of errands to keep it running for an hour and a half - put my last $10 into the gas tank (4 gallons) then met up with my priest who used the church card to fill the tank the rest of the way. As I was going to leave I ran into the woman who sold me the truck walking home. I gave her a ride and learned the truck has a tendency to be fussy in the cold if the tank is too low. Lovely. But at least I know. My dad is talking about helping with a tune up so we’ll swing by the mechanics tomorrow and price that - I am presuming it will start then but a good warm up & the heater extension on the way I’m feeling better than yesterday at 1:00 PM lets just say :D Picked up my books on hold at the library too. Time for a cider and to relax.

‘Witness’ = Roger Stone, probably. That sounds like something he’d say.

Please don’t tell these tools that it is this type of thinking that turns so many of us Black Americans from associating ourselves with the Republican Party. If all of the jurors had been Caucasian, nothing would be said about its racial composition. Although they may never admit it, most of us are intelligent enough to realize that forming any association with the GOP as it exists today is a dangerous proposition for not only Black Americans but for all Americans and for the world.

To be fair, people generally don’t go outside in these conditions unless they’re stupid, drunk, or well-attired. There’s always the odd stupid idiot who is wandering around in shorts and a T-shirt, but that’s usually for a short walk between segments of the skyway downtown.

I recall once in NY, shopping the day before a blizzard was forecast to hit, going to the grocery store (crowded as hell, everybody trying to stock up ASAP), and seeing a woman pushing a cart loaded with a bunch of stuff, including about 20 boxes of Jell-O. Now I can understand loading up on dairy products, meat, cereal, booze, etc.: but Jell-O?? She must have been expecting a REALLY dire storm….

It was all the store had left.

This whole thing just sucks. We are going to be stuck with Trump until 2020. The only way we will put the brakes on his sabotage is going to be the midterms in November. Remember the last Keystone pipeline leak (at least the last one I remember at the moment—in last November)?

Charlie Pierce reports that the cause is apparently because half-circle concrete blocks were placed on the pipeline where the pipeline was below the top of the water table (!!!) to keep it from floating up. Apparently the concrete rubbed on the pipeline and caused a rupture. Who would have thought? And what the heck is it with putting a crude oil pipeline through shallow ground water ground? What a recipe for disaster.

I know we should not post full articles, so I won’t. But I urge you to read this. It’s likely part of the reason Trump is so bat-shit insane today:

mobile.nytimes.com

By Glenn R. Simpson and Peter Fritsch
Jan. 2, 2018

A generation ago, Republicans sought to protect President Richard Nixon by urging the Senate Watergate committee to look at supposed wrongdoing by Democrats in previous elections. The committee chairman, Sam Ervin, a Democrat, said that would be “as foolish as the man who went bear hunting and stopped to chase rabbits.”

Today, amid a growing criminal inquiry into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, congressional Republicans are again chasing rabbits. We know because we’re their favorite quarry.

In the year since the publication of the so-called Steele dossier — the collection of intelligence reports we commissioned about Donald Trump’s ties to Russia — the president has repeatedly attacked us on Twitter. His allies in Congress have dug through our bank records and sought to tarnish our firm to punish us for highlighting his links to Russia. Conservative news outlets and even our former employer, The Wall Street Journal, have spun a succession of mendacious conspiracy theories about our motives and backers.

We are happy to correct the record. In fact, we already have…..

Three congressional committees have heard over 21 hours of testimony from our firm, Fusion GPS. In those sessions, we toppled the far right’s conspiracy theories and explained how The Washington Free Beacon and the Clinton campaign — the Republican and Democratic funders of our Trump research — separately came to hire us in the first place.

We walked investigators through our yearlong effort to decipher Mr. Trump’s complex business past, of which the Steele dossier is but one chapter. And we handed over our relevant bank records — while drawing the line at a fishing expedition for the records of companies we work for that have nothing to do with the Trump case.

Republicans have refused to release full transcripts of our firm’s testimony, even as they selectively leak details to media outlets on the far right. It’s time to share what our company told investigators….

[several paragraphs cut]

Yes, we hired Mr. Steele, a highly respected Russia expert. But we did so without informing him whom we were working for and gave him no specific marching orders beyond this basic question: Why did Mr. Trump repeatedly seek to do deals in a notoriously corrupt police state that most serious investors shun?

What came back shocked us. Mr. Steele’s sources in Russia (who were not paid) reported on an extensive — and now confirmed — effort by the Kremlin to help elect Mr. Trump president. Mr. Steele saw this as a crime in progress and decided he needed to report it to the F.B.I.

We did not discuss that decision with our clients, or anyone else. Instead, we deferred to Mr. Steele, a trusted friend and intelligence professional with a long history of working with law enforcement. We did not speak to the F.B.I. and haven’t since.

After the election, Mr. Steele decided to share his intelligence with Senator John McCain via an emissary. We helped him do that. The goal was to alert the United States national security community to an attack on our country by a hostile foreign power. We did not, however, share the dossier with BuzzFeed, which to our dismay published it last January.

We’re extremely proud of our work to highlight Mr. Trump’s Russia ties. To have done so is our right under the First Amendment.

It is time to stop chasing rabbits. The public still has much to learn about a man with the most troubling business past of any United States president. Congress should release transcripts of our firm’s testimony, so that the American people can learn the truth about our work and most important, what happened to our democracy.

My oven is so old, it doesn’t have a self-cleaning function.

The fridge should probably get wiped down at some point. I did a pass-through on it today. Rearranged the pantry last week, feeling pretty good about that.

Right, and I will mention that that wasn’t the first time Moore’s kid had been arrested on drug charges. He was arrested in Florida, too, but I’m not sure how he avoided jail on that one. Somehow, the young adult Moore male benefits from his dad’s power and influence. I always thought it’s strange that Moore feels he should be able to have control over others’ lives but doesn’t seem to be able to do anything about his son’s troubles/problems. I recall that the last time his little sonny boy got into trouble, the first thing Moore asked for was “privacy” for the family.

It’s not strange at all for The Elect to expect different treatment from everyone else, especially if you have no self-awareness and little if any conscience.

Got any evidence that Willard is a pedophile?

First, Willard hasn’t even announced yet, much less won the nomination. The Democrats need to run good candidates everywhere, and in some red locations they will catch a break when the GOP nominates a nutbag. If Doug Jones hadn’t run, Moore would be a US Senator now.

re: #327 calochortus

They’re tired of getting trash/non recyclable stuff with the plastic. Recyclers here are hoping they can negotiate the 0.5% non-recyclable content upward a bit. It is a bit of a problem for both sides.

Seems like there should be business opportunity in finding more ways to use/re-use all those abundant plastic resources in the trash. And business opportunity in finding ways to set up smaller local manufacturing with 3D printing, that cuts the cost (and risks) of shipping cheap plastic stuff across the Pacific. There’s plenty of green to be made in green industries.

That’s the kind of company I’d want to invest in, if I had anything spare to invest.
My husband has been saying for years that the Dems should set up with some of the US car manufacturers to sell hybrid/electric cars in a color called “Democrat Green” — i.e. what’s good for the world’s environment can also be great for the American economy and the American worker.

“Democrat Green: Good for your wallet AND your lungs”

EDIT: Yeah, I know I’m dreaming. Still wish I had the money to do it…
