Donald Trump Just Explicitly Threatened to Start a Nuclear War

“My button is bigger than yours”
Politics • Views: 30,878

Our so-called president has been really out of control today on Twitter, but this was the worst of a series of awful tweets, boasting about the size of his “Nuclear Button” and explicitly threatening North Korea.

The media is reporting on this, then moving right along to the next story as if it’s just one more normal piece of business from Trump. But the hour’s getting late, folks. There’s a madman in the White House and we’re all in very grave danger.

If ANY OTHER PRESIDENT, OBAMA, NIXON, IKE, CLINTON, BUSH 41 OR 43, ETC. acted this way, he would be gone by the end of week. With this fucking asshole all anyone does is shrug their fucking shoulders, and it’s outrageous.

I might die later this evening in a car accident.

But I’m not going to live my life like I expect either of them to happen.

Unless it’s in the positive sense of always making sure that I tell the people I love what they mean to me and that sort of thing, because you never know when the last goodbye is.

Anyway that’s my take on today because that’s how I keep functioning. Which, maybe that’s overrated. But it’s what I’ve got.

Indeed.

Trump is Twitter’s ultimate “halo” user, one that gets them millions of eyeballs on their service. At the rate they’re burning through money, Twitter can’t afford to boot Trump, even if they wanted to (and it’s pretty damn clear they don’t want to, even if that means many diplomatic and national security incidents are caused by the Orange Flotation Device’s tweets).

Is it at this juncture I tell the basic things to do when you see the flash?

1) Do not look into the right. It will blind you. Turn head or body away.
2) Begin to count seconds (I’ll explain later).
3) Get behind something mass and thickness that is solidly fixed in the ground. If that fails, any depression in the ground. Put your back towards the detonation.
4) Begin doing what you do to pressure equalize when you fly. Keep mouth open. This is to decrease the risk of being deafened by he shockwave.
5) Note seconds passed when fireball goes out. Keep counting seconds (I’ll explain later).
6) Note seconds passed when shockwave arrives (see below). Remember that there can be two shockwaves, one going out, the other coming back in.
7) Prepare mentally to be traumatized by what you see.

Counting the duration of the fireball gives a rule-of-thumb value of the yield of the device. The time between start of fireball to shockwave gives you the rough distance to hypocenter (remember that the shockwave can travel faster than the speed of sound for a bit).

As to radiation, remember the mantra TIME-DISTANCE-MASS:

TIME — keep your exposure time to the radiation source(s) low.
DISTANCE — keep your distance to the radiation source(s).
MASS — keep things with lots of mass between you and the source(s).

Bingo.

This remains the best open source manual of what will happen in the event of another nuclear weapon being used. This is the 3rd edition of 1977:

Hmm. Not the whole document like I thought. I’ll look for it.

I wouldn’t count on it: my guess is that the fix is already in for the P.P.: either the official report will state that Trump is the healthiest healthy President who ever had health; or that the info is too “classified to release to the “Fake News Press”, and that they will just (like with everything else) have to take the POTUS’ word for it….

Extra prediction: if Trump doesn’t make some stupid crack about being in great shape from playing all that golf, Sarah Sanders will….

Exactly, the same way she was forced to walk back the Yam’s ”deep state” tweet about the DOJ earlier today in her presser by saying the Yam doesn’t believe the entire DOJ is a part of the deep state. Neither she nor the Yam could explain the meaning of the word deep state, if they were asked to define it. They’re two pitiful peas in a pitiful pod of ignorance.

Sorry.

And the reason I am leaving is for this reason: your comment. Am I not allowed to react too?

So, now I get criticized for not letting people react, and other times my reactions are melodramatic.

Can you not see how frustrating it can be? It really gets to point where I do not know what to say in some of these threads anymore.

So when everyone is “reacting” this negatively, it is best to back out. And I did, but I made the mistake of continuing to read, so I came back to answer you.

retired cynic  Jan 2, 2018 • 7:18:24pm

Here’s an essay from Nancy LeTourneau that I found good (meaning it confirmed my prejudices and made them clearer to me—-LOL). Power With vs. Power Over.

You can’t look at power without looking at patriarchy. Patriarchy — domination of men over women- has been around for about 5,000 years, which is relatively short in human history. It has been perpetuated by the idea that the inequality in power is inherent, and has been a foundation for dividing us in other ways, including race, class, country of origin, religion and sexuality. But patriarchy arose out of a complex set of historical conditions, overcoming the primarily egalitarian relationships of indigenous cultures that preceded it - therefore we know it can be transformed. At the Omega Women’s Leadership Center we believe it’s time to move away from “power over” to “power with.”~Carla Goldstein

Anyway, if/when I disappear again (seems likely), for those that care there are a few Lizards who have my e-mail address and can check in with me that way and of course my Twitter has stayed active the last several times.

I miss everyone a lot but some days I just can’t and if that makes me weak, well, I can’t change what you think of me but it’s nice to know all the same.

Not going to change what I think of you. We all respond to things differently. And you helped me grow as a person last year and the year before that.

But the devastation of conventional war would be Not Here, so a lot of people don’t really care.

That’s been the US experience of war generally, for about 120 years — our soldiers go someplace really far away, the rest of us read about it or look at pictures, and when it’s over 97% of our troops come home. So when talk of war happens, we don’t have the visceral reaction common in places that have suffered air raids, artillery battles, occupation, etc.

It’s funny though. Both his great grandfather and another brother who went to the UK were bakers. My second great grandfather was a blacksmith. Heh two totally different jobs.

The thing with DF is, I understood him. You know my folks are in the same place. But I chose to make my stand; my folks already know I’m not a good little Republican soldier, though they don’t know the extent of my betrayal just yet. I’m afraid of what would happen if my dad finds out, but you know what, I also can’t really care about it, in the end. Doing what’s right is more important than my inheritance or my standing with my parents. In the end, I think they will understand, even though they will disagree.

Last I heard, the GOP is up 50-49 in the House of Delegates with one district tied. I don’t think it was a choice. He’s a robot, who was always going to do what his father programmed him to do. He’d try to act like a normal person here, because he was too stubborn to move on when LGF stopped being a wingnut site, and he wanted to be accepted, but no matter what he said here, he always pulled the lever for Republicans, no matter how odious.

I think you got it right unfortunately. He wanted to stay because he did have friends here and he could be civil but he was as you say in the end a soldier for the GOP first and foremost. It’s really sad because I really thought the 2016 madness would make him really think about what he’d be doing for the GOP. But when he said he voted for Cruz after months of telling us that he’d never vote for him, I lost all respect at all. He treated some individual Lizards pretty shabbly too.

She was such a great person. Me and her couldn’t be anymore different. Me being only 30 and younger than her son and a secular minded guy but she was always sweet to me. She offered such an unique perspective here and was a friend to so many. I also liked hearing her cab driver stories. My Dad was a cab driver when I was a little kid and later an Uber Driver for a time. One of my favorite stories from CL involved her telling off some bigoted passengers in her cab. She was a tough lady but also considerate to those she cared about. Makes me so sad that she’s not with us and many more obituaries I’d rather wish I’d read remain unread.

Apparently, “much work to do,” as President Donald Trump proclaimed he would be heading back to DC for after spending most of the last two weeks golfing and, presumably, attempting to fuck Melania (per her contractual obligations) only to end up screaming at her for keeping her eyes open and that’s why his dick couldn’t get hard, and, no, Melania, it’s not all the fast food sodium and Diet Coke chemicals, the fuck are you talking about, means “tweeting a shit-ton.” Because that’s pretty much all Trump did today. It was like a greatest hits concert of tweets, slamming Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, North Korea, Iran, Democrats, the New York Times, and the “fake news” media. Seriously, it was like it was Skynyrd doing “Freebird” nonstop for an entire day.

Overheard while my girls are playing Minecraft just now.

A: You’ll be a philanthropist.

M: What’s a philanthropist?

A: It’s a person who gives to charity for the sake of giving to help.

M: That wouldn’t be Donald Trump.

A: Donald Trump is a philanthropist for rich people. Actually, he’s not even a philanthropist for rich people.

FUCK THAT. I wish someone, ANYONE in the media would go after him like Morrow did McCarthy. CALL HIM A LIAR WHEN HE LIES!!!!

Back then you only really had CBS, NBC and ABC - and they were essentially standalone entities not tied to a much larger parent unlike they are today as some subsidiary.

Today, with everything being so highly fragmented (and with the Internet to boot), it’s nearly impossible to do that.

Don’t forget that in today’s infotainment world, news is secondary - profit is first.

Don’t forget that in today’s infotainment world, news is secondary - profit is first.

It always has been. Look at the first news papers - broadsheets tied to London Coffee shops to bring the customers to them rather than competitors. Later the yellow journalism of Pulitzer & Hearst starting the Spanish American War to sell newspapers. We had a short moment of about 20 years after WWII where the journalists who had covered WWII had a bully pulpit and no competition - thus we got Morrow, Cronkite and the rest and a fantasy that journalism meant something. It doesn’t because everyone and everything is biased in someway.

The only objective journalism is the box score.

I’m sticking with what I predicted before. The Rest of the World is going to smack Trump down and totally humiliate him. First by dumping the dollar as the world’s reserve currency, second by dumping Treasury securities and third dumping US stocks and fourth imposing economic sanctions.

I’m hoping that Anonymous gets a hold of the GOP e-mails that the Russians hacked and releases them to the public so we can see what Kompromat Putin has on Republicans. Got a feeling there are plenty of kinky skeletons in their closets!

Dunno how much you know about me, but I was in that mold until my mental programming got broken back in college. I mean, you’re right, but it’s depressing to me because it’s literally a case of, “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”

By the grace, you also have the little fishes and a wife to give you a solid stake in the future as well as the present. Loving kids in the generation(s) below you — whether yours or someone close to you, like HW’s adored niece — gives a perspective I don’t think DF had. I don’t remember if he talked about siblings or cousins or friends with kids, a younger generation that he’s close to for support when inevitably he loses the elder. It doesn’t excuse his choices, but it’s a sad place to be.

Black swan theory

The black swan theory or theory of black swan events is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight.

The theory was developed by Nassim Nicholas Taleb to explain:

The disproportionate role of high-profile, hard-to-predict, and rare events that are beyond the realm of normal expectations in history, science, finance, and technology.

The non-computability of the probability of the consequential rare events using scientific methods (owing to the very nature of small probabilities).

The psychological biases that blind people, both individually and collectively, to uncertainty and to a rare event’s massive role in historical affairs.

Unlike the earlier and broader “black swan problem” in philosophy (i.e. the problem of induction), Taleb’s “black swan theory” refers only to unexpected events of large magnitude and consequence and their dominant role in history. Such events, considered extreme outliers, collectively play vastly larger roles than regular occurrences.[1]:xxi More technically, in the scientific monograph ‘Silent Risk’,[2] Taleb mathematically defines the black swan problem as “stemming from the use of degenerate metaprobability”.[2]

So, is Trump our Black Swan? He certainly fits the profile, and nights like tonight point to him an as agent of disaster.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I find this pretty damn terrifying.

What I remember about the election issue was that after a recount, the Board of Elections ruled that the Democrat won by a single vote. The Board of Elections was charged with reviewing and validating the ballots, among other things.

The Republican appealed to the three judge panel who was supposed to confirm the Board of Elections decision. He showed a ballot that had been disallowed by the Board of Elections. It had both candidates name circled, but a slight line through the democrat’s name. The judges ruled that it was valid and for the Republican.

The Democrat appealed. As I understand it, her question was whether the three judge panel was intending to take over the Board of Election’s power to allow or disallow on ballots. If so, she intended to submit a large number of ballots for the Judge’s review.

If the judges do not respond, the Board of Elections will again take over.

re: #336 HappyWarrior

Okay, the article is more than a little clickbait-ey. He does not (possibly) owe USD 7B in back taxes for several reasons. First, in no way is it about his personal tax bill. That 7B is the total aggregate the IRS is going after from the entire USD 100B valued hedge fund (and/or possibly shareholders/beneficiaries; don’t ask me, financial institutions really aren’t my thing and I haven’t exactly dug deeper into the case), not from one individual or family. Not by a long shot.
So this is a potential, possible back tax bill for a ~100B US company. Bit less out there already.

Next, the IRS is going after allegedly improper classification of certain securities over a period of several years. Now whether that lower tax rate they were possibly improperly classified as should even exist could be a valid question, and whether they were incorrectly classified as such (apparently) *is* a very valid question, but it wouldn’t be the first time where a difference in interpretation in fiscal matters leads to a dispute of that magnitude. Apple is facing a bill about twice that amount in Ireland after the EC managed to get certain Irish tax rulings invalidated. That added up over a bunch of years as well. In the end that’s just a matter of scale and any sufficiently large company or institution could potentially get themselves in hot water like that if their accountants went with a different interpretation of a certain rule than what would in the end be ruled to be the correct interpretation thereof; it needn’t even be bad faith so much as, let’s say, overtly optimistic interpretation of statutes.

Fact is any real world tax law (and practice) is going to be fought on a knife’s edge and things somewhat like this will come up sooner or later.
That’s really not the issue. Also, you might miss the forest for the trees: the real F-ing outrage is trying to buy the administration so as to get the IRS to back off. That’s banana republic territory. Getting wound up over the size of a (potential) back tax bill that’s just a matter of scale and of multiple years’ disputed tax liabilities adding up is missing the point completely.

I’m a Hillary Democrat. I voted for her not because of Fuckface Von Clownstick (though that definitely helped) but because her speeches and appearances and social media over the course of 18 months convinced me that that was the right and righteous way to cast my vote. It was an effective campaign. My party affiliation was “independent” since I was 18, and Hillary’s campaign changed my mind. I am now a Democrat and will actively campaign for local, state, and national Democrats. Hillary brought me into the fold, and I’m not ashamed in the slightest to admit that.

I have no regrets at all for voting for her. The most qualified, intelligent, best on issues, and yes likable candidate that ran last year. She was a better candidate than Sanders and Stein.

re: #349 ThomasLite

7% of its market cap over 5+ years? Yeah, be as sarcastic as you like but that is rather less of a spectacular matter than your, yes, clickbait seems to suggest.
Also not quite as extraordinary; any real-world rule is subject to interpretation. Any fiscal system particularly is going to have disputes over that interpretation. Any such dispute over a tax rate to be applied to (a significant portion of) a large entity’s profit is going to scale linearly with the size of said entity. So yeah, this is not particularly extraordinary.

Also do note that the system was actually working fine. IRS was going after (and from what I can tell, highly likely to recover) those back taxes.

But in the real world it’s perfectly possible to get these differences of interpretation without bad faith on either side. And all it takes then to get a big back tax bill is a sufficiently large company.

If you can’t see how those percentages are much, much more relevant than the absolute numbers to the original tax dispute you have issues dealing with the scale of a(ny) modern economy, TBH.

Feel free to be entirely legitimately outraged about trying to buy off the administration.
But to be outraged that larger companies have proportionately larger tax bills, and proportionally larger tax disputes isn’t really a productive attitude so yeah, I’ll be happy to call you out on that. Because it’s rubbish.

That gondola doesn’t run in the winter, it’s strictly a summer attraction.

Usually there’s 15 foot snow walls in the three avalanche paths on the side of the highway on the west side of the pass. There hasn’t been enough snow for any kind of avalanche control this year. Hell, college kids from Western State haven’t been able to hike up into Tea Cup Bowl to build a big kicker to practice backflips. It’s fucking January! *shudder*

It was nice and gray and windy though.

That’s the funny thing. Unless the actual outrage comes to pass and Mercer manages to pay off the administration into muzzling the IRS, that seems to be a pretty certain outcome by now.
In other words, system’s working fine, actually. Aside from the one really newsworthy part that gets covered under completely irrelevant outrage how really big companies apparently have really big tax bills, as well. Which is why it might be a good idea to actually focus on what’s worth getting worked up over.

I mean, I think we can all agree on the sentiment I posted.

And the fees for all the auditors who had to focus on this shit.

Interest on US back taxes is something around 3% IIRC. relatively punitive compared to current cost of financing, you could argue. Yes, that is automatic, rest assured.
fees for auditors are either included in fines or for the IRS to bear (“letting the costs fall where they may” seems to be a popular mantra in US procedural law. I wouldn’t know for certain, not an American).
Fines could be assessed but that depends somewhat on how reasonable the interpretation that doesn’t win out in the end is deemed to be, usually. There’s a difference between being wrong and acting in bad faith. Even fiscal law tends to leave some room for that, where appropriate. ;)

It is that same form of historical revisionism that goes from “Western Civilization has a number of admirable principles, including democracy, individual rights, equality , personal liberties and the rule of law, which are worth defending and even spreading to the rest of the world” to “Western Civilization is inherently superior”.

There will be a blue moon this month.

As the world settles into 2018, it’s been an auspicious year for skywatchers already. New years day presented the first supermoon of the month, sort of a warm up to the main event later in the month. For full coverage of yesterdays, supermoon check out Brid-Aine’s piece on Forbes. At the end of January, skywatchers will be treated to a supermoon, blue moon, and a total lunar eclipse (known as blood moon) all in one night.

This phenomenon, nicknamed the “Super Blue Blood Moon” will be icing on the cake after several months of impressive moons. However, the party won’t stop there, while February won’t showcase a full moon, March will have another blue moon on the 31st.

Some cheeky humor:

Sorry for late response. I get where you’re coming from; it’s just a bit more complicated than that, really. When you’re dealing with a tax situation that’s orders of magnitude more complex than that of any regular joe doing his more or less regular taxes, situations arise where more than one interpretation is legitimately defensible. You don’t just err on the side of magnanimity, but you (ie. accountants, tax lawyers etc) ‘show your work’ and if the revenue service disagrees, you quibble over it until a court settles it - no hard feelings. That’s how the system’s supposed to work, and it’s how ambiguous questions get clarified. Part of the design. And keep in mind, while they get to argue their views, if they lose out they pay every penny plus interest. Gov’t borrows at lower interest rates than what such an entity would pay anyway (that’s how that interest rate is set up pretty much inherently) so it’s all fine.

Also, no western revenue service (and least of all the US IRS) has much of a reputation for wimping out on this sort of dispute - quite the contrary, in fact. But I’d hope we can all agree it is a good thing everyone gets to argue the ambiguity in a complex rule before a judge before having some agency apply their interpretation one-sidedly, whether we particularly like that somebody or not ;)

Trump Tower meeting with Russians ‘treasonous’, Bannon says in explosive book
Former White House strategist quoted in Fire and Fury, by Michael Wolff
Bannon: ‘They’re going to crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV

Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon has described the Trump Tower meeting between the president’s son and a group of Russians during the 2016 election campaign as “treasonous” and “unpatriotic”, according to an explosive new book seen by the Guardian.

Bannon, speaking to author Michael Wolff, warned that the investigation into alleged collusion with the Kremlin will focus on money laundering and predicted: “They’re going to crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV.”

Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, reportedly based on more than 200 interviews with the president, his inner circle and players in and around the administration, is one of the most eagerly awaited political books of the year. In it, Wolff lifts the lid on a White House lurching from crisis to crisis amid internecine warfare, with even some of Trump’s closest allies expressing contempt for him.

Bannon, who was chief executive of the Trump campaign in its final three months, then White House chief strategist for seven months before returning to the rightwing Breitbart News, is a central figure in the nasty, cutthroat drama, quoted extensively, often in salty language.

Report: All Intel Processors Made in the Last Decade Might Have a Massive Security Flaw
The exact details of the design flaw and to what extent users are vulnerable are being kept under wraps for now, per the Register, though since developers appear to be rushing towards patching systems in coming weeks it is likely very bad. In the absolute worst-case speculative scenario, something as simple as JavaScript running on a webpage or cloud-hosted malware could gain access to some of the most sensitive inner workings of an Intel-based device.

Because the fix entails severing kernel memory entirely from user processes, patched OSes could potentially see a massive performance hit of “five to 30 percent slowdown, depending on the task and processor model”:

Hello? Hello? Is this thing on?

North Korea and South Korea established contact on a hotline that’s been dormant for almost two years Wednesday, a major diplomatic breakthrough following a year of escalating hostility and a move that could pave the way for future talks.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un gave the order to open the line at 3:00 p.m local time (1:30 a.m. ET), according to an announcement on state media in the hours before the two phone calls to the South took place.
According to South Korea’s Unification Ministry, the North Koreans made first contact at exactly the time ordered, and the sides were on the phone from 3:30 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. local time (South Korea is half an hour ahead of North Korea).
During the initial 20-minute connection, the two nations “checked technical issues of the communication line,” according to a statement from South Korea’s Unification Ministry.

Apparently the Michael Wolff book that quotes Bannon has a lot more damning stuff, including evidence legal advisor Mark Corallo (sp?) resigned right after the statement on Don Jr’s meeting with Russians was crafted on AF1 believing it obstruction of justice.

I’m getting a strong feeling that something big is about to happen.

Russia’s puppet/useful idiot, malevolent extrajudicial entity is looking to screw around with the US justice system and public opinion, which benefits Trump (and Russia).

Never mind that they’re silent all the time about Russia’s justice system, the extrajudicial killings there of Putin’s political enemies, and the single minded determination by this entity to undermine US institutions. It’s as though it was designed with the express purpose to undermine US institutions and ignore far worse issues elsewhere.

Just wait: I’m guessing that no matter what transpires between the two Koreas (and just on a WAG, I’d say fairly little), Trump and his crack* foreign-policy team - probably with Niki Numbwits as front - are going to be gloating and crowing and taking credit for - something/anything** - as validation for their “tough” FP approach.

I just watched the extended interview of last night’s Daily Show guest, Yara Shahidi (she plays Zoey on Black-ish, and the stars in the spinoff that starts this week)

cc.com

The girl is impressive as all hell, and fascinating. She’s half Iranian — her grandmother was caught up in the travel ban, and her cousins are currently protesting in the streets in Iran. On her Black American side, one cousin is an astronaut, another is Nas (“my family has high expectations, that’s just how we do things”).

She’s taking a gap year before going to Harvard — the major she’s chosen is an interdepartmental thing they call “social studies”, it’s a combined Sociology/Anthro/Econ/Philosophy, and then wants to work in a “politics adjacent” non-profit. Her recommendation letters for his college application were from her AP Calculus teacher, and Michelle Obama.

If he was not having his 6:30 dinner with Steve Bannon, then, more to his liking, he was in bed by that time with a cheeseburger, watching his three screens and making phone calls — the phone was his true contact point with the world — to a small group of friends, who charted his rising and falling levels of agitation through the evening and then compared notes with one another.

How the famous Trump hair is done, as explained by his daughter.

She often described the mechanics behind it to friends: an absolutely clean pate — a contained island after scalp-reduction surgery — surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the center and then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray. The color, she would point out to comical effect, was from a product called Just for Men — the longer it was left on, the darker it got. Impatience resulted in Trump’s orange-blond hair color.

The Columbia Journalism Review criticized Wolff in 2010 when he suggested that The New York Times was aggressively covering the breaking News International phone hacking scandal as a way of attacking News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch. CJR called Wolff’s analysis “pathetic”, “disgusting”, “twisted”, and based on “zero evidence”.
