after months of spinning that Faux News talking points, I’m quite unsure that I even care how the Mouth of Sauron chooses to spin her master’s words/feelings/urges on the most recent matters.

they can pretty much go DIAF as far as I care, I pretty much feel that these are the people that they’ve always been. The folks I want to see perp walked and placed in stocks and pilloried are our Congressional GOP representatives who are blithely staring at the horizon with dollar signs in their heads as they loot the country for themselves and their owners and allowing the racist, sexist, greediest set policy and have their way.

Once we clean that rats nest out, we can turn our attention to our media that are also on the hate payroll and make them irrelevant.

We should issue every US citizen and legal resident alien an ID card. Think of the hassle it would save us with issues like welfare and social services fraud, not to mention the issue of voter ID.

And in the end, it would be cheaper and more effective than building a damn wall

Updating the SSI card from a piece of paper with a name and number typed on it wouldn’t be too difficult. How you get those new cards to everyone is a bit tricky, from a logistical standpoint, but doable nonetheless. But there’d be a lot of push back, there always is when it comes to national ID card talk, or at least there always has been in the past. Maybe that’s different now.

SSI is not citizenship, but it is at least proof of legal residence. And the logistics of such a thing are small compared to the cost of building an artificial barrier across thousands of miles of desert and rough terrain.

And anyone who complains about illegal immigration, voter fraud or social service abuse needs to shut the fuck up about a simple solution used by nearly every other civilized nation in the world. In Germany, it is impossible to open a bank account, register a car, enroll a child in school or even sign a lease or employment contract without presenting proof of legal residence.

One faint hope I have for the future of democracy in this country is the courts (so far) have been pretty skeptical of allowing voter-suppression laws (invariable promoted by and enacted by Republicans) that stray too far past mere “ID” requirements: if the NH law (has it been signed?) actually does specifically mandate a “drivers license/car registration” - vs, any other acceptable form of ID - I’m guessing this gets tossed fairly quickly at the first level of Federal Court. And probably no review at the CIrcuit/SCOTUS level, either.

I don’t think they are requiring anyone to have a car to vote, they are saying if you are claiming residency for the purpose of voting then you will be treated as a resident for the purposes of drivers license and vehicle registration as well.

most college students when they go to school in another state, if it’s a public school at least, will get a drivers license for that state because to get instate tuition you have to establish residency for a year before the university will consider you an instate resident. But that’s not always the case.

Also, I’m guessing there’s very little evidence of college kids voting in elections they aren’t supposed to be voting in. If that is the argument the state is going to make for putting a requirement like this on exercising a fundamental/constitutional right then they are going to have to survive strict scrutiny - that is that the law was narrowly tailored to further a compelling governmental interest. So they’re going to have to show this was a problem and that this was the best way of dealing with the problem. Given case law on the subject, they’re going to fail both prongs of the test.

As far as the SCOTUS ruling is concerned, you are where you plant yourself. These students are spending most of their time, their tax money, and probably even working in the state they are going to school at. The state makes laws that regulate the school they are going to. Why wouldn’t they be a resident there, especially if they register to vote?

I don’t know about NH, but CA issues IDs to non-drivers.
Now, if you’re saying you need one specific ID that they will charge you for, then that is certainly a poll tax.

Texas doesn’t. You can get an ID, but you have to go to a license office, and one of the things Texas did was close a number of them near the border where a lot of Latinos live.

If you don’t drive why would you have a drivers license?

Which why many states (sorry, no idea which ones they are) offer a “non-driver ID”, or something similar, for their dedicated-pedestrian residents who want/need an “official” identification document.
And IIRC (cites appreciated), some states that have enacted voter-ID requirements have been forced to provided (free) ID for otherwise non-driving voters. And yeah, that “poll tax” issue is a fairly settled one.

I should have been more clear, between the SSI and green card systems, we have the basis for a national ID system. But as I said, there’s always pushback to any sort of national ID card

But the fact is that issues like voter ID, illegal residence and social service fraud will be greatly diminished by a simple step.

We are still stuck back in the days when the majority of the US population still lived in small communities where people were able to identify each other by name and face.

At the state level it’s been trending that way for the last few years. From what I’ve been told there’s been a minor but significant influx of two kinds of conservative voters: wealthy Mass folks fleeing taxes and “Free State Project” types (the racist from Keene who got arrested in Charlottesville, VA is one of these, I think).

At a time when people are battling over whether to take down Confederate War statues and memorials, a pair of state lawmakers in South Carolina want to put one up.

And it wouldn’t be just another Civil War monument. It would be a monument to honor the sacrifices of black Confederate troops from South Carolina.

Problem is, historians say there weren’t any black Confederate soldiers in South Carolina.

If their ID is from another state rather than your state, it would be a logical assumption. Now, if the student is working and paying taxes in your state, then it’s a better bet that they live there. Traditionally college students have been temporary residents unless they took steps to establish residency.

Really, I didn’t mean for this to become a huge debate. I just thought I’d mention that if students’ ID is from out of state, maybe they aren’t residents.

Another take on the 2018 elections: that we need to pay more attention to flipping governor’s mansions, as they have a large effect on the re-districting coming up after the 2020 census.

Apparently over double the number of women are running for governor than four years ago. And there is a systemic resistance to women being executives, much more than having women as legislators.

And it is really going on in The White House.

Be proud conservatives, Republicans and wingnuts that elected this mess. You are the producers of this show.

You own it.

And, may the stink on the GOP from this “show” be unbearable and long lasting.

I was operating under the assumption that you would need an ID to obtain an account with which to use those things.

I literally set up the bank account 36 years ago, and I’ve worked for this company for 9 years.

So, yes, you needED an ID at some point. Most states requiring IDs also require they not be expired.

But, for example, The Boys both had PayPal debit cards, which allowed us to give them money without them having to have bank accounts.

Alabama was forced to offer State ID to non-drivers when they passed our voter suppression law. You get the card at your local DMV. Then they closed most of the DMVs in many counties with the largest Black populations. As an economy measure.

Could someone forward this to the NYT? (Jennifer Rubin—she’ll still likely go all in for Romney, but for now…) Bolding mine.

The book should also inform how the press interviews him. We know he’s unhinged, so acting as his stenographer is not elucidating. Seeing what he knows, how much of a grasp of details he commands, how he reacts when challenged and the degree to which his short-term memory may be off is, it seems, where we should direct our attention.

Today was the first day I went out and took care of some banking and shopping. It got up to 20° today here in Columbus, so it was much better for getting around.

Problem was, everywhere was busy as hell. Everyone was just getting out for the first time since the New Years weekend. Highs in the single digits will do that.

And now we look forward to another round of deep chill until Sunday, the other reason everyone was busy…stocking up for the next few days of burrowing.

One thing though…it does tend to keep the snow totals down when it is this cold. Not enough moisture and Columbus is about 50 miles south of the sweep of the snow belt snows that can hit northern Ohio.

I work at a little LTAC in Havertown, PA. Last year sucked for snow, so when we finally got a forecast for snow in March I had visions of OT dancing in my head. We were supposed to get 12-18 inches of snow (But I really should have known better than believe it - it was March for goodness’ sake). Short story long, I get to the parking lot early (It had already turned to sleet and would fizzle out before long), but the first step out of the car had me slipping and spraining my knee. I was so disgusted.

Philly is about on the same line as Columbus, but being closer to the coast you get the warm southern Atlantic wind patterns that seem to keep you a bit more protected.

I think that carries the snow north of you, more up into New York state and then into New England.

Which is weird because that is the pattern of the crazy storm coming up the coast.

President Donald Trump’s commission investigating voter fraud must give one of its Democratic members access to more of the panel’s records, a federal judge ruled Friday night.

U.S. District Court Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap appeared to have been denied documents needed to be an active player in the deliberations of what is formally known as the President’s Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.

Subversion through terror, shock, pain is easy — instant gratification, as it were. Subversion through friendliness is paradoxical, slow-acting, and durable. And sneaky. Most tweeters are guessing it has to do with Nunes - either getting Ryan to pull back on his leash or letting Ryan know there’s an indictment coming down the pike.

The truth is Trump could not get the very specific information that he wanted which was how each voter cast their ballots. The machines only count the votes not how each individual voted.

Just waiting for the new machines, where they record an image of the voter and the ballot at the same time.

You know, for election integrity….

I’m not listening, but the images MSNBC is putting up while discussing Bannon are downright scary.

I think they are choosing the worst and capturing Steve’s Street Person fashion sense perfectly and that anti-GQ skin tone.

“Steve?” Yes? “What is..that…is that a….cologne?…I can’t quite put a finger on it..” Yes. It is. My signature fragrance. Rotting Corpse, by Nautica. They have an after shave too. Want to drink a bottle with me?

Perhaps it was SO widespread that it was too thinly spread to see, like when you only have a tiny smidgen of butter left but you toasted two pieces of bread.

Well, I have heard it said that that funny ring makes one feel like too much bread and not enough butter - stretched a bit thin as it were…

A Court recently ruled that the commission was required to share all working documents with the Matthew Dunlap, its one Democratic member.

That’s the real reason Trump is dissolving the commission, they’d rather kill it than let evidence of their flagrantly illegal voter suppression scheme come to light.

The latest in the weather situation here - it’s supposed to start snowing here around midnight and snow straight through until about 7:00 tomorrow night. Greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

I wouldn’t worry about it. We’ll be too busy trying to figure out how to stay warm with no power to worry about snow.
