Trump Dissolves His Fraudulent “Election Integrity” Commission

It was a scam from the start, and state governments refused to play along

In addition to the circular firing squad currently going on over Steve Bannon’s comments about Trump, we have some more good news to report.

Remember that bogus “election integrity” commission Trump formed to look into one of the right’s favorite fantasies, “voter fraud?” The commission that savvy people realized was intended to further disenfranchise minority and disadvantaged voters, to ensure future right wing control of government? Headed by white nationalist-connected anti-immigration activist Kris Kobach?

It’s gone. 86’ed. History. Trump dissolved it today with a typically petulant statement, blaming it on state governments that refused the commission’s outrageous requests for the personal information of hundreds of millions of voters.

There are still a couple of troubling things in this statement:

  1. It says "despite substantial evidence of voter fraud..." when in fact there is nearly zero real evidence of voter fraud.
  2. What in the hell does the Department of Homeland Security have to do with voting? This is disturbing.

That’s the real reason Trump is dissolving the commission, they’d rather kill it than let evidence of their flagrantly illegal voter suppression scheme come to light.

Trump touted the voter fraud EO as a major achievement, and within hours of 2018 disbanded its legal underpinning.

It wont end the Trump/GOP efforts to suppress voter turnout by claiming voter fraud at every opportunity. That Trump’s looking to somehow leverage DHS into the mix is extremely troubling. It also is an attempt to trample on federalism - you know, states’ rights since voting is a state activity. States control their own voting procedures and it’s the states, many of them with GOP in key positions like Secretary of State, including in states like Alabama, and they’ve certified votes that idiot bigots like Moore and Trump claim were hotbeds of voter fraud because they lost elections.

The GOP/Trump efforts behind this are all about racism and bigotry, and suppressing votes to get the outcome desired - ongoing power and control.

Kobach has been at this for years, and despite all of his investigations, he’s come up blank precisely because there isn’t voter fraud, not of the kind he thinks.

There’s voter suppression, which means far more people lose their right to vote, or see hurdles placed in their way that are meant to dissuade people from voting - many poor, many minorities.

This is what the GOP wants, because their core support is a dwindling demographic.

I think it’s a couple things:) I think you may be right but I think Bannon may feel Trump isn’t living up to his promises. Or that Bannon is only in it to create chaos and he doesn’t actually want real elected power.

Separation.

Bannon thinks that Trump is going down in some form, and this gives Bannon the separation he thinks he’s going to get to influence future elections as a campaign guru/Rasputin type.

I think it could also be an audition for getting a deal from Mueller.

I want to see Bannon testify under oath to Mueller about what he knew/saw about everyone related to the June meeting and all those other interactions that would support the conspiracy and other criminal charges that could and should be forthcoming.

Other, non-tweet associated, videos play fine. gifs in tweets play fine.
If I open the tweet in a separate tab, not associated with LGF page, the videos play fine.
When LGF is viewed in Chrome, the video just shows it is endlessly spooling. Using Firefox the video window shows black with a “This media could not be played” message.”

Like I stated, if I click on the the tweets timestamp, in either browser, and open the tweet in a new tab, the videos will play fine.

Nice. I did a roast in my new slow cooker for New Years Eve with a little help from my lizard friends. It turned out great! I love that I can now cook cheaper cuts for hours without worrying that it will burn with the settings that automatically turn to ‘warm’ when done.

Sounds like it may be related to this. Some of us changed this setting to user activation required and it hosed some videos just like you mention. Maybe it got changed by a choice made for a video or site or something. Make sure it says it is Default Mode.

Go to this Chrome page by opening a new tab and typing this link in: chrome://flags/# autoplay-policy

Be sure to remove the extra space I had to put in between the # and the autoplay so it didn’t show as a hashtag.

I bought a local equivalent of an Instant Pot over the weekend. I needed a rice cooker, so it seemed to be a logical upgrade. I am hooked! Made rice in 13 minutes one night, and a stew last night in 40, Hardest part was deciphering the instruction manual, which is naturally all in Chinese.

It’s not quite as bad as all that. This is an unmitigated disaster for, as an example, cloud service providers - a malicious hacker can spin up a virtual machine, run compromised code on it, and be able to read the memory contents of the entire server upon which the virtual machine is created, within the given timing window (the attack is essentially a timing attack, taking advantage of the processor trying to optimize away the delay between getting approval from the hardware to read data, and actually reading the data). For ordinary users of ordinary machines, it might be possible for a hacker to gain access to any privileged information if you keep it on your machine, but they’re not going to take control of your computer and turn it into a botnet zombie.

Spectre and Meltdown are variations on the same theme; Meltdown affecting an Intel-specific implementation, Spectre attacking the general concept, which applies to all modern processors. The root cause is that anything done in software is slow, and so the major leaps in processing speed have been hardware trying to do things that are usually done in software. The concept at issue here is called “speculative execution”. A computer program takes lots of different paths based on conditions; if this, then that, etc., etc. Modern processors store a history of these paths, and if it sees something it thinks is familiar, it goes ahead and executes those instructions before the program actually calls for them to be executed, in the background, anticipating that the result will be needed later and can be instantly recalled. If it isn’t needed, the processor has lost nothing by executing those instructions off-cycle, and the result is thrown away. The exploit is involved in setting the program up to read an area of memory it is not allowed to read; the processor goes ahead and reads that data off-cycle while the operating system checks to see if the program is actually allowed to read that memory. The malicious program then interrupts the processor and copies that pre-fetched data out before the operating system denies the request and causes the data to be erased.

Do a Google search and see if there is a similar setting in Firefox. Look for “autoplay video settings” or the like. They have updated Firefox a couple times over the last few weeks. So, maybe something was weird with a new setup.

Actually, the book can’t be blocked. That’s prior censorship and is almost completely inimical to the First Amendment. There is an argument which could be made about national security, but I don’t think this book qualifies. Plus, that horsie’s out of the barn; some of the press have the book already. (Note: If you work or worked for a three-letter agency, one of the conditions of your employment includes review of your books, but that’s not prior censorship.)

I’m personally wondering if the non-disclosure agreement Bannon signed with “Donald J. Trump for President, Inc.” is void as a matter of public policy? Also, the letter talks about libel but fails to note that Trump is the quintessential public figure and would have to demonstrate “actual malice” to be able to win any damages. (Which is nearly impossible to do.) Also, considering how awful Trump is (and this can be demonstrated on the record), I’m thinking it’s literally impossible to libel the guy.

I’ve asked one of my more astute lawyer buddies in New York about the NDA but it will be tomorrow before I hear back from him, I’m thinking. Just as a side note, one of our
Republican (!) Arizona legislators filed a bill for consideration in our “meth lab of democracy” to make NDAs for sexual harassment illegal.

Hey Charles,
For the past few weeks I haven’t been able to watch videos in embedded tweets.
Other, non-tweet associated, videos play fine. gifs in tweets play fine.
If I open the tweet in a separate tab, not associated with LGF page, the videos play fine.
When LGF is viewed in Chrome, the video just shows it is endlessly spooling. Using Firefox the video window shows black with a “This media could not be played” message.”

Like I stated, if I click on the the tweets timestamp, in either browser, and open the tweet in a new tab, the videos will play fine.

I’m having this issue too. OS X 10.9.5, Firefox 57.0.3

Oddly, I had not tried the “video” button until just now, and the videos play fine that way. In both Chrome & Firefox browsers

I wasn’t doing that, either. I’ll try the video button.
