A Raging Donald Trump Threatens Michael Wolff’s Publisher, Demands They Withdraw His Book

Not gonna happen
Politics • Views: 29,067

Our so-called president is not in the best of moods today; in addition to threatening author Michael Wolff and Trump’s former consigliere Stephen Bannon with a defamation lawsuit over Wolff’s bombshell book, his lawyers have also threatened Wolff’s publisher and demanded that they cease publication.

In an 11-page letter, the president’s lawyer said the book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” by Michael Wolff, as excerpted in a magazine article, includes false statements about Mr. Trump that “give rise to claims for libel” that could result in “substantial monetary damages and punitive damages.”

“Mr. Trump hereby demands that you immediately cease and desist from any further publication, release or dissemination of the book, the article, or any excerpts or summaries of either of them, to any person or entity, and that you issue a full and complete retraction and apology to my client as to all statements made about him in the book and article that lack competent evidentiary support,” the letter said.

So Trump is claiming Michael Wolff lied about all the statements from various Trump aides quoted in the book? Just one little problem with this line of attack: Wolff reportedly has dozens of hours of recordings to back up those quotes.

It’s doubtful that Trump would actually follow through with these lawsuit threats anyway, because it would mean exposing himself to depositions under oath and the discovery process, and we know that’s the last thing he wants.

Trump absolutely ignores the 1A. He doesn’t care about free speech, let alone anyone critical of him. He sees anyone critical of him as the enemy who must be destroyed and their opinions squashed.

He isn’t presidential, let alone fulfilling his oath to protect and defend the Constitution. He’s too busy defecating on it and wiping himself with the fecal matter to know what he’s doing about this or anything else.

Wolff’s book clearly shows Trump is incompetent and is a clear and present danger to himself, the nation, and the world. That Trump thinks he can try to suppress this book shows he’s incapable of taking any criticism, or that he understands (or cares) what the law is.

Trump’s assertion is that the book is libelous? Guess what - truth is an absolute defense, and if Wolff has video/audio recordings of these interactions, then the truth is the defense and there’s absolutely nothing Trump can do to stop the book from publication.

Indeed, there’s anecdotal evidence from all corners of Trumpworld that the people surrounding Trump consider Trump to be a fucking idiot. Not just Mattis but Murdoch and others. Still others are trying to play up to Trump’s know-nothing reactionary sensibilities to stick around and cash out a little more before they’re done too.

This is what happens when you watch a party sell its soul to the lowest common denominator of the party - racists, bigots, and ignorant about how anything actually works so that the GOP leaders exploit the ignorance with bigotry, deflection, all while enriching themselves and their cronies and passing the burdens on to everyone - including their very base supporters who don’t realize they’re getting screwed.

re: #12 Stanley Sea

It’s not even an open secret.

Everyone who watched Trump all along knows Trump lacked character, judgment, or temperament to be president, let alone hold any elected office anywhere.

He was elected despite this - the GOP ignored all the warning signs because their hate of Clinton superseded all else, and they got an added boost from Russia who considers chaos in DC to inure benefits to them no matter the outcome.

Russia got the best outcome they could have hoped for - a government in chaos, no leadership worldwide from the US, and a self-absorbed and vainglorious know nothing who refuses to learn anything about anything and therefore retreats into his fact-free bubble to feel better about himself.

Trump is demonstrably making the US less safe, undermining the US economy, and leaving the world stage to rivals like Russia and China to have their way with the world as the US simply ignores its commitments and alliances because Trump feels slighted when allies don’t agree with him 100%.

Meanwhile in Canada…

Canadian cannabis producers set their sights on global domination

As medical marijuana is legalized around the world, Canadian producers are ready to export it. And while California is the latest U.S. state to legalize marijuana, American producers are shut out of the global market because of the federal prohibition on the drug. That leaves Canada room to pursue the international market and all the potential riches that go with it.

Sessions announcement resulted in a selloff of Canadian cannabis stocks in today’s trading.

re: #59 HappyWarrior

Then your lawsuit is bs. You don’t get to sue because a book doesn’t portray you in the best light.

From 2016,

Donald Trump’s outright contempt for journalists and press freedom is well known—but in the past month he has outdone himself.

In the span of a long weekend in mid-September, Trump threatened to sue The New York Times, his staff had a Vice reporter arrested outside a campaign event, and he blamed the New York terrorist bombings on “freedom of the press.”

This weekend, Trump struck again. After the Times’ huge scoop detailing how he took an almost billion-dollar loss on his 1995 taxes, Trump’s lawyer threatened “prompt initiation of appropriate legal action” against the Times once more. By my count, it is at least the 11th time Trump has threatened to sue a news organization or journalist during his campaign for president.

I had intended to quantify how many journalists or news commentators Trump has threatened to sue over his lifetime, but that quickly turned into a fool’s errand. A simple Google search of “Trump threatens to sue” will return an overwhelming number of stories. In the past decade alone, he’s sued a former Times journalist who wrote a book about him that he later admitted he didn’t even read; he’s threatened to sue former View host Rosie O’Donnell for allegations that have been shown over and over again during this campaign to be correct; he’s sued HBO’s Bill Maher over a joke bet that involved proving he was not, in fact, born an orangutan.

He threatened to sue a journalist at the Village Voice as far back as 1979, and he actually sued a newspaper as early as 1984: the Chicago Tribune, for calling building plans of his “aesthetically lousy.” My personal favorite was his threat to sue The Onion, the popular satirical news site.

For those who question Donald’s devotion to our system of government: journalists who read the book confirmed that not only did he know nothing about the Constitution, but that someone trying to explain it to him gave up at the 4th Amendment because he has the concentration of a gnat and had no interest in learning anything more.

Reminds me a little of the scene in the HBO movie “Game Change” when the McCain team brought in experts to teach Sarah Palin about foreign policy. Her ignorance of basic history was astounding, but at least (in the movie anyway), she was enthralled by the information and took notes. Trump has no interest in learning anything from someone else and probably, thanks to dementia, he is incapable of doing so.

I’m getting the impression that you folks don’t even notice those buttons underneath each tweet that say “Images” and “Video.” If you’re having trouble playing a video in a tweet, click the “Video” button and it will play in a popup dialog. Same with images - click that button and you’ll see the full-sized image and if there’s more than one you can flip through them with the arrow keys.

Oh, I noticed the “Video” button, but I assumed it would do something like retweet it, or save it. Silly me.

All US towns “look like America,” including the overwhelmingly Trump-supporting town I live in.

True, true. You’re right. I phrased that badly. I should have said they’re demographically more reflective of what the country is. And yes you’re absolutely right about the problem with those stories but the other problem as you already get at is there’s plenty of people in those towns who never supported Trump.

Done.

E-mail just sent:

Mr. Bunch,

It is refreshing to see an article that is not either a fawning review of Donald Trump voters who are still Donald Trump fans, or Donald Trump voters who are concerned about Donald Trump’s actions, or Donald Trump voters who are showing regrets for their votes for Donald Trump.

It is a start.

One thing that hasn’t happened, and I don’t expect will, is venturing into so-called Trump Country to interview those who never supported Donald Trump. As I refer to myself: A pale blue dot in a very red US House district.

Eight whole people in my township in the Nebraska Panhandle voted for Hillary Clinton, three for Gary Johnson, two for Jill Stein. The rest of the township went (as did the state) overwhelmingly for Donald Trump.

Local newspapers give fawning coverage, and FOX News Channel is on in virtually every business. It’s almost as if we don’t exist here, or are somehow “un-American” for voting for the candidate that won the popular vote (even though she didn’t in my state).

I look forward to the day when a reporter comes deep into “Trump Country” to find those of us left behind. I assure you we do exist.

Teleskiguy will back me up on this I suspece. I still don’t get why it fucking snows in flat places. Snow is wasted on the flat landers…ooh…we’ll play hockey…yeah…for an hour.

Snow belongs on mountains in quantities > 3 feet, then regular deposits of 10-17” ever two or three days until it gets warm…then it should stop and let melt-freeze cycles do their magic and make beautiful creamy spring corn.

There. That is how the weather is supposed to behave.

Most of the bench equipment I used in the Navy was either analogue or rather primitive computer equipment by today’s standards (punched tape to feed a PDP-8 with a drum drive of 1M capacity, or cassette tapes feeding trinary computers).

Heh. I know some guys who get all nostalgic for the PDP-8. I can’t get that way about anything more primitive than a PDP-1/45 - I need semi-conductor ram not core, floating point math is very handy & it can *just* run Unix Version 7.

It’s a winter hurricane. I feel for all those people.

They got the horrible weather we got, cranked up to eleventy, then put out over the ocean where relatively warm water turns a severe Plains storm into a freakin’ monster storm. There were blizzard warnings up in Virginia Beach.

Dollars to doughnuts the GOP stonewalls on disaster relief for all the blue states hit by this unless they get some sort of “offset” (read, take it out of social programmes).

It’s a tough call for me. A RW friend told me that he keeps the peace within the family by having the rule that no politics are discussed at family gatherings. He and I avoid the topic most of the time to maintain our friendship. Once in awhile I interject something related to economics, health policies or the environment but we primarily limit our discussion to less controversial topics, such as how large corporations care about only the wealthy and shareholders, and would sell the rest of us out. I know that this seems like a cop-out but we have been friends for over 20 years and he is happy not promoting his views to me.

We can only do what we can do. People have their own situations. I don’t put up any big signs for fear that a bullet would come through my window some night. In the old days, most folks had the same goals: quality schools, taking care of those in need, being decent, following the golden rule, caring for the environment, being good sportspeople, being a good winner, good loser, good neighbor. We argued about the best strategy to get there. Now, conservatives want to destroy public education, denigrate higher education, let poor people suffer, harass and even kill people with darker skin. They think Christians are persecuted, whites are superior, cops should be worshipped, and the answer to foreign relations is war war war. Virtually all of their information is demonstrably false, and they don’t care. With my multi-racial family, I just can’t normalize it. I often think of the strength of black people who put up with so much more every damn day without lashing out. That is some strength.

Yeah. Ritchie Blackmore would stage the destruction of cheaper guitars. Have empty speaker cabs they would torch. Saw a video where he pushed two 4X12 cabs off stage…Nope. Ain’t happening if they are real… Just staying in the realm of guitarists, I never got it. But from a showman, I got the money, I can buy another, “Bobby can you light your hair on fire”….Yeah. I get it. Pete Townsend had to do something when Keith Moon blew up the world. Hendrix made a statement. SRV, well I think he actually went places when he played. He certainly was high enough in the earlier days…They say some “channel” and do what some would call mystic..IMHO, SRV would do that. He left that stage. He was somewhere else. I would never ever attempt to play VooDoo Chile….Nope. I can do a reasonable version, but…no. To me scared ground.

My recollection about The Who was that Pete accidentally broke his guitar swinging it over his head one night in a club with a low ceiling and the news got out. Then he felt pressured to keep doing it, so he had to buy cheap guitars for the last song, then Keith wanted to get in on the act and blew up everyone’s ear drums.

Good news: snow was very light/fluffy and easy to move here in Northern NJ.
Bad news: there was about 5 inches of it.

Good news: snowblower helped clear the snow
Bad news: snowblower died 80% through clearing snow.

So now I’ve got to get a new snowblower… the old electric one crapped out after 7 years. Can’t complain about anything but the timing really. It saved my back and definitely helped through some serious snowstorms.

Heh. An old friend of mine used to be his guitar tech. It was his job to set up the real guitars and piece together the ones that Richie would smash.

It actually was a real problem, because the most obvious choices for cheap guitars to smash were Squiers - but the Squiers at the time mostly had plywood bodies and Blackmore couldn’t smash ‘em. They wouldn’t break. So he’s have to find other Strat style bodies, slap Fender necks and loaded pickguards on them and get them so they’d make some type of sound for a couple of minutes before Richie did his smashy-smashy.

My friend also used to do the neck scalloping for Richie’s Strats. Still makes money doing that.

Pete smashed real Gibsons. He could get those SGs for (relatively) cheap and he’d go through a lot of them, but it wasn’t like Blackmore who would get 50 dollar Strat copies to smash.

I was in Greece in early 2016 when it was supposedly a mess. Not a mess. Not close to a mess. They would show all these protests on TV, it only happened in one square and was done for drama. People were mad at oligarchs for damaging the country and getting away with it. I only have one brother and no other siblings. When he goes it’ll rip my heart out.

I can assure you that you are right.

When did NDAs become required to receive your severance pay? We’re damn near 1900 era employment practices now.

“our countries political system”: egregious possessive case/apostrophe abuse/ignorance, unless Jacob has more than one country.

Pinkerton’s, as the company that existed during the 19th and early 20th centuries (such as during the company’s role in the infamous Homestead Strike), doesn’t exist anymore; what later became of Pinkerton’s after the company was bought by California Plant Protection in the late 80s was bought yet again by Swedish security company Securitas in the early 2000s (I worked for the company from 1996-2003). The Pinkerton name is now only used for Securitas’ executive protection, consulting, and intelligence division; everything else, including the industrial and government security divisions, have operated under the Securitas banner for at least a decade or more.

Besides, there are other private security companies that are still more than glad to do strikebreaking or other “damp” work; frankly, I’m surprised that Blackwater/Xe/WTFBBQ hasn’t got an industrial security division for that sort of stuff. When I was working for Pinkerton at the former Peterbilt plant here in Nashville and the UAW went out on strike in 1998, PACCAR brought in a “specialist” security outfit specifically to man the picket lines and directly interact with and document the strikers in order to keep us Pinks out of the fray, since we’d have to work with people from both management and labor when the strike was over; we just kept doing our normal building rounds and tracking incoming and outgoing freight and trailer moves to the docks, as we always did, during the strike.
