In Which the GOP Tries to Protect Their Orange Oligarch Figurehead With a Series of Desperate Moves

Politics • Views: 27,816

Republican efforts to protect their stalking horse Donald Trump are reaching a fever pitch today, as his sham administration goes even further off the rails. Trump has given the GOP their golden opportunity to ram through all the regressive policies they’ve been dreaming about for decades, and they’re going to fight tooth and nail to keep him in office, despite the mounting evidence that he and his cronies engaged in many levels of criminal activity.

Now they’re trying to charge the author of the Trump/Russia dossier with something/anything, and the Sessions Justice Department is going after Hillary Clinton again.

Any hope that the Republicans, any Republican in office, will see the light and help put a stop to Trump is in vain. We’ve seen what their reaction has been to every new bit of news showing how fucking unstable and dangerous he is. Their answer has been to double down and further hitch their star to him, even the so-called ‘moderates’ and #NeverTrump-ers.

At this point, they just need to cut the pretense and draft laws to outlaw the Democratic party and minority suffrage, along with mandatory gun owner ship, because at this point, that’s precisely where they’re going to go anyway.

re: #474 ObserverArt

I didn’t watch The Today Show today, so I did not see this interview with Michael Wolff. So maybe we can all watch it together.

Also, I see the interview is already leading to complaints that Wolff wasn’t straight up with The White House. See link to a WaPo story and a couple paragraphs that begin the story.

What a mess this all is.

[Embedded content]

And the link to the WaPo story…

WaPo - Trump book author Michael Wolff made a damaging admission on the ‘Today’ show

I’ll laugh at anyone who goes this route. It’s their playbook, and it’s not even close to O’Keeffe’s antics. We are finding out exactly what’s going on.

9
Scottish Dragon  Jan 5, 2018 • 12:27:34pm

So it begins.

Last night, announcements that the Clinton Foundation and the email imbroglio were being re-opened by the JOJ under ressure from Trump.

Today… Senators Grassley and Grahm send a letter to the DOJ demanding criminal investigation of retired MI6 agent Christopher Steele, alleging his dossier is a lie and therefore prompts criminal penalty.

They know Trump is unfit and a disaster. They universally loathe him. They are going all in on protecting him.

Even if he is impeached by the House after a possible Democratic wave later this year, you will not get enough votes in the senate to convict. That is now evident. He can quite literally commit any crime you think of in plain sight and it will not matter.

Big Beautiful Door  Jan 5, 2018 • 12:27:40pm

I mentioned at the bottom of the last thread that any GOP complaint about Wolff being disingenuous about his intentions in order to get access is rank hypocrisy given how they celebrate O’Keefe’s duplicitous behavior.

I’ve been thinking about Sessions dogged refusal to resign, in the light of the revelation that various members of Trump’s staff lie to him to protect him from doing something self-destructive. I’m thinking that Sessions’ loyalty to Trump is actually keeping him in the job, knowing that resigning could trigger Trump firing Mueller, which Sessions probably sees as catastrophically self-destructive.

That, and pot is still legal in a few states and black people can still vote, so Sessions no doubt feels his work is not yet done.

washingtonpost.com

The Founding Fathers must be spinning in their graves.

Not because of cavalier threats about nuclear apocalypse and attempted erosion of First Amendment rights (okay, maybe those things, too). Because our federal government is failing to execute one of its most basic constitutional duties: the decennial census.

The decennial census is the country’s largest civilian mobilization. It determines where billions of federal dollars flow each year, and how many congressional and electoral college seats each state gets. The results have enormous influence over the decisions of businesses and local governments, too.

It’s also, yes, mandated by the U.S. Constitution, right there in Article I, Section 2.

Yet despite all the brandishing of pocket Constitutions on the right, the Trump White House and Republican lawmakers are sabotaging this sacred mandate. First they refused to sufficiently fund it. Now they’re taking actions that would severely depress participation.

Another plot twist I can’t follow. Sessions set Mueller in motion. That would make him a good guy. I can’t go there.

AFAICT, the “rationale” (scare-quote deliberate) for wanting Sessions canned is pretty simple: with Ol’ Jeff gone, Trump can nominate (and the GOP Senate confirm) some “reliable” hack toady as AG, who will fire Robert Mueller, shut down the Russiagate investigation, and focus the DoJ’s resources on the truly vital issues: i.e. legal harrassment of Hillary Clinton (and any other Democrats who happen along), and “protecting” the President from any and all legal repercussions for any and all of his actions.

I also seem to recall that “Sessions set Mueller in motion” (despite his own recusal) pretty much as a response to public/political outcry that “something had to be done”. Of course, now, when it is so obvious that so many campaign/Administration actors* were complicit in either A) illegal collusion with Russians during the campaign and/or B) lying their asses off about it under oath, those Republican stalwarts changed their tune….

The idea is to create one (or more) 36-square mile sovereign areas with rail and paved road access (we have both in my village, one each).

So if they took that route, presumably any corporation would be exempt from taxation and government regulation by the village or the state. I presume the village would still be required to provide government services to that district.

At this point in time, I don’t see how all the conservative machinations are going to make a difference. I don’t think there is a large group of intelligent interested voters who haven’t decided if Drumpf and the conservatives are a bunch of lying criminals. There are those who will never admit it (as was the case with Nixon) until it all comes crashing down, and those who know what is up and no amount of distraction will work. I think it is obvious that conservatives refuse to fulfill their oath to faithfully defend the Constitution. I remember how tenuous the fight against Nixon was. How vicious the conservatives were and how endless their attempts to delegitimize the media and government institutions. I think it is tenuous now.

I confess to real anger that Franken was railroaded out of office.

OTOH, it allowed Dems the unchallenged moral high ground re: Moore, and the political calculus of gaining a Democratic Senator from ALABAMA for the next 3 years is crystal clear - we have a seat we’d NEVER have gotten any other way. We’re one otherwise impossible seat closer to taking back the Senate.

Politics ain’t beanbag.

WRT Gillibrand being an opportunist? Who that is successful in politics isn’t?

It’s also to continue trying to discredit Mr. Steele and/or the dossier to their voters.

The stunt only has to convince Republican voters that Mr. Steele is somehow engaged in criminal activity, and the investigation loses credibility.

Propaganda is a helluva drug, and all my life conservatism has been about nothing but maintaining power.

Yeah, but this is nothing new. Wasn’t everybody repeating ‘dodgy dossier’ over and over last summer?

It hasn’t gone away. The cementheads will buy it, but how many more of them are there? Do you think they’re really going to change the minds of the people who think there’s really something to the dossier?

I don’t. The ones who want to believe it already do.

Looks like an attempt to discredit Gillibrand. I think Franken should have stayed until the investigation was complete, but 1) he wasn’t running before the accusations and 2) he wasn’t going to be able to after. She argued it because of the number that were popping up.

I’m relieved that Franken left on his own instead of giving the GOP the distraction they desperately wanted, but reasonable people can disagree about that. At the end of the day he made the choice he thought was best given the circumstances. I agree with Imani though, you don’t have to like the outcome but “due process” doesn’t enter into it.

She’s been consistent on this. She was the Senator who talked about male colleagues having had harassed her. Honestly I didn’t see Franken as presidential material. He was a good senator but I don’t know if he was presidential material. I think we needed to go younger.

I wasn’t concerned with Franken’s age. But reading ‘The Giant Of The Senate’, he talked about how things from his time in comedy that were really pretty innocent came back to haunt him in the MN Senate campaign - like a brief mention of moments from a writers meeting for SNL, where people are throwing out crazy ideas trying to see what works*, so inappropriate things get suggested, things that would never see the light of day.

The idea is to create one (or more) 36-square mile sovereign areas with rail and paved road access (we have both in my village, one each).

So if they took that route, presumably any corporation would be exempt from taxation and government regulation by the village or the state. I presume the village would still be required to provide government services to that district.

Yeah, I’m gonna oppose this.

Sounds like the “free zone” plan some a-hole Libertarians floated for Honduras after the 2009 coup/non-coup installed a presumably friendly government: get the G to cede them one of the country’s ports and some surrounding territory for a “Free Enterprise Zone” or whatever, in which all sovereign rights (included which laws the felt like enforcing, or not) were to be vested in the governing corporation, in return for some -probably paltry - payment to be made to the generals’ private accounts the Honduran government.
Didn’t work out: it was quickly noted that international drug cartels would likely be the main beneficiaries of the “Zone”….

Nah, I’m kind of detached from WV these days save family and the Mountaineers, in all honesty. Kinda washed my hands of it all. They’ve tried to do some of the industry changes and retraining, similar to like what PIttsburgh had to do post-steel. The response was to become redder and picket for more coal to the point Don Blankenship is running for fucking Senate and might actually have a shot.

They’ve pretty much ignored their own mythologizing about the miners, forgetting about fighting against greedy, exploitative mine owners and simply embracing the ‘coal’ part instead.
