I’m seeing some rumbling out of the Camp David Nat. Rep. Slumber Party that there will be no approval of DACA unless the Trump International Wall is funded by congress.

Hostage time for a Trump Legacy with a big beautiful gate.

I’m not missing Andy Murray - but I would like the heat to go away. I don’t live where it has been the hottest & I’m fairly used to heat - but this summer started early & continues to bring the humidity and then the storms.

I’ve often thought about what I would do if I won multiple million dollars (as we all have, I suppose). Then I think about my parents: They didn’t win it, but through hard work and careful investment, they wound up being multi-millionaires at retirement, which is why my dad was able to retire early. The key to their success is that they didn’t drastically alter their lifestyle. They added a few luxuries, such as nicer (brand new) vehicles, their dream house (on property they already owned), and trips up north to see the grandkids, but by and large their monthly expenditures remained constant, and any excess went toward the future. And now my dad can kick back and enjoy his twilight years with my mom and his grandchildren. If I won it big, I probably wouldn’t blow it all. I have a few charitable causes and family members I would spend a a fair amount on, and then the rest would be invested to be fruitful and multiply. I can’t take it with me, but I sure as hell can leave it behind.

Back on Parscale for a minute (I left to watch a movie and the last thread got away from me so repeat from dead thread)

According to a 2016 Wired profile, he started out with a $500 investment after graduating from Trinity University, cold calling potential clients before graduating to building websites for organizations including the Trump Winery and Eric Trump Foundation.

He told the magazine Trump gave “a farm boy from Kansas” a chance. “When I was successful, he continued to reward me over and over again, because I worked hard and produced success,” he said.

During the presidential campaign, the Trump camp paid a whopping $91 million to the firm, which prior to 2016 had no experience in political campaigning.

newsweek.com

And also, last July:

Lara Trump, the wife of Eric Trump, will serve as a senior political consultant for San Antonio-based company Giles-Parscale

Something has always seemed off about Parscale.

I would keep 25 million for myself and then give 50 million to the US Chess Federation, The American Contract Bridge League, The American Go Association and the US Checker Federation with the provision that all of them establish school programs geared to helping kids gain confidence in learning to reason and plan.

Welp

Cambridge (Analytica) worked both for the Trump campaign and a Trump-aligned Super PAC. In June 2016, Cambridge sent three staffers, led by chief product officer Matt Oczkowski, to the campaign’s San Antonio office. Oczkowski’s team eventually grew to 13 people, working under Trump digital director Brad Parscale and alongside his staff and outside consultants. According to Parscale, the Cambridge staff provided useful analysis of data about the American electorate.

Mrs. Fish is the collector of the LotR stuff. She has most of the action figures, which I used to have on my work desk until 1) they took away my top-desk space and 2) I received some disciplinary action and became afraid I was about to be fired. But one time when she was visiting my office, she re-enacted several scenes from the movies using her own action figures. I love that woman.

The group includes Trump’s digital and data director Brad Parscale, onetime deputy campaign manager Rick Gates and two campaign advisers to Vice President Mike Pence, Nick Ayers and Marty Obst.

David Bossie, another Trump deputy campaign manager, and Katrina Pierson, a senior adviser on the campaign communications team, also will be involved, according to a statement announcing the group.

Until my recent first visit to NZ a couple of months ago, all I had were the extended editions of LOTR and Hobbit movies, placed in a small furniture section charmingly referred to by some of my friends here as “the geek shrine”. The NZ excursion added one shiny shiny glorious official golden ring, a hat and some postcards from the Hobbiton Set as well as a gorgeous map of Middle Earth, which were the only things I could squeeze into what little spare luggage capacity i had available.

You know, it is what it is. I can only follow my conscience, and I cannot in good faith vote for a Republican when I know that they will suppress women and minorities and generally screw over the poor, the fatherless and the widow in the name of making a few extra bucks for those who already have plenty. I love my family and I always will, but I understand their faults and failings now, and I’m able to deal with them. I’m just sorry that I can’t really be me around them and they can’t know my true heart.

There was a young fellow here in China who was trying to raise money for his family by rooftopping various tall buildings around the country, with no safety equipment. In November, he was doing pullups on the top of a 62-story skyscraper in Changsha, lost his grip and fell 45 feet to a terrace below. He died.

Most of these rooftoppers are male, at least as far as I can tell. Same goes for wingsuit flyers. Everything is way cool except when it suddenly isn’t.

If Trump really is suffering from Alzheimer’s, we could be seeing tweets from his lucid phase and his dementia phase. Some here have noted the style and tenor of the tweets depends on which device is being used (Android vs. iPhone), OTOH, suggesting two different people are posting to the same account.

I guess Wolff was unable to catch The Donald in tweet mode, so we may never know.

Could be a Jekyll/Hyde sort of thing - it may depend on his emotional state at the time.

I’d be willing to bet that if I walked into the Oval Office and started talking to Trump about NYC real estate, and what he thinks would be a good investment (sort of a “lemme pick your brain” kinda things), that’s a subject he knows something about and he’d probably be pretty lucid if you could talk to him about it. He’s away from the cameras as well and not having to play up his public image persona.

Just a thought.

You’d need to drop his name or that of his properties in the discussion every once in a while to keep him focused on you. From what I gather, though, Trump basically talks at you and not to you, creating a one-sided convo.

Reminds me of the old joke about the guy who falls from the 30th floor of a highrise. And after plunging 28 stories he is heard to say “So far, so good …”

Actually most of them don’t call themselves Nazis. Neo-Nazism is a set of ideologies that tries to revive some core elements of the original Nazis’ ideology but don’t necessarily admit it. Thus one can be a neo-Nazi while formally condemning NSDAP. But being a Nazi and condemning NSDAP would be weird.

mmmirele  Jan 7, 2018 • 8:41:19am

Well, I managed to get restricted on Twitter for 12 hours. But it wasn’t for tripping a filter like telling Trump “Fuck You.” No, it was because I was listening to a church sermon from Highpoint Memphis, where the “teaching” pastor, Andy Savage, has been credibly accused of sexually assaulting a 17 YO girl twenty years ago (and he’s admitted it) and then livetweeting it.

Here’s the story:

wmcactionnews5.com

This woman was treated like *shit* by the church then, and she’s still being treated like shit by Highpoint Memphis.

Anyway, the lead pastor, Chris Conlee, had Savage come up and read his statement, which had been posted on the church’s website on Friday and found wanting then. Then Conlee preached a sermon on, you guessed it, the woman taken in adultery. He wanted his listeners to picture Andy as being the woman taken in adultery, and the women, yes, the women, who brought this story to light (I know them, they’re friends of mine), as the Pharisees ready to stone him. The problem with that is that Andy isn’t the woman taken in adultery—where the religious leaders were ready to stone her. No, he’s the guy the religious leaders left behind in bed. Because Andy Savage has never faced any real consequences for what he did, while his victim has.

Conlee then tried to browbeat the woman into forgiving Andy. I’m not that woman, but I’m thinking that forgiveness isn’t going to come until the day Andy Savage admits to committing a crime against Jules Woodson. And, finally, right before the altar call, Conlee tried to make his church out into a place where women could heal from sexual sins. No—women and girls need to stay the hell away, because crimes against them will be minimized.

You can read Jules’ story here:

thewartburgwatch.com

And my mother wonders why I don’t go to church. Well, there ya go, exhibit A with a bullet. We’ve seen this over and over and over and over again.

ETA: I think the supporters of Highpoint Memphis flagged my tweets because I didn’t cuss anyone out. I was just *savage* in my response to the sermon.

Let me put this a different way.

Helpful: Covering the atrocities the Nazis committed in World War II

Not helpful: Interviewing Nazis

even that is too nuanced to discuss in a tweet

There was a blowup in Germany in theover a 1993 film, Beruf Neonazi (Profession: Neonazi) a day-in-the-life with a prominent Neonazi, Ewald Althans, without any sort of editorial comment.

Point of the movie was not to portray the fellow in any sort sympathetic light, but to show what an extremist asshole he was.

It led to a scandal, the film was first banned, then later allowed only after some clarifying comments were added. In 1996, Althans was sentenced to three years in prison for defaming the state and inciting violence.

But we are getting a lot of interviews and articles that seem to portray our neonazis is a sympathetic light as merely a point on the political spectrum instead of as a threat and insult to American values

No. Unless Nancy Reagan had been told about the Beirut bombing in one of her seances before it happened.
Navy SEALs parachuted into the waters off Grenada only hours after the attack in Beirut, after delays, forcing them to insert during a storm.

When we were alerted at Ft Bragg Monday night we assumed we were going to Beirut. This was after we spent Monday updating our shots and life insurance paperwork. SEALs had already deployed and were conducting reconnaissance. The bombing had occurred Sunday morning.

Well seems like a busy day.
Trump still an idiot.
Stephen miller should be spoke to with a boot heel like all Nazis.
And all Nazis should then be thrown under the rock they came from…and crushed.

But hey…that’s just me.

It is getting warmee here and the high is a beautiful 8 degrees.

Just figured I would stop by and say hi to everyone. Paperwork day due to client emergencies.

Just checked Columbus temps. 19°. Headed maybe to 30°

It’s a heat wave!

Now the worry is the transition from 4/5” of snow on the ground at 5° this morning to 40° with snow sprinkles changing to showers overnight.

That means ice. I hate ice.

I hope he got this statement approved by whoever is holding him by the short curlies. What a waste if it doesn’t grant him whatever he’s looking for. The statement was really dumb for the reasons you highlighted and he again lends credence to the book.

And is this dude broke? I thought he was pretty damn rich independently. Or just greedy? I confess sometimes I can’t grok what these uber rich power players are motivated by and when they decide it’s okay to stick their chest out and go against the grain.

Thanks! We abhor cilantro greens so they are right out, but I bought radishes and a cabbage. I think chopped green onions will work for color, with some thin sliced red onion. Mrs J is fond of crushed nacho chips as a garnish - I may follow suit.

Crushed chips are imperative. Fresh oregano is good too. But no cilantro?

He depends on the kindness of the repulsive Mercer family to keep Breitbart afloat. They’ve made big noise like they’re going to bail (if they haven’t already), and that would leave Bannon to finance Breitbart with his own dough.

That would be a huge drain on his finances, and he knows it. Hence, the butt-smooching marathon of that statement.

And what about the part about taking the Russians to meet Trump afterward? Manafort did that but Junior didn’t?

Bannon’s seeing his bank account collapse and is trying to stop it. Too late, though.

Asking pointed questions like you just did is not allowed in the political back’n’forth these days.

Look at what is going on in the TV media today. Good questions are being asked and needed for clarity.

The roads for tomorrow morning travel are gonna be sketchy at best. It isn’t predicted to get above freezing until after 9:30.

Luckily I can hang out as I don’t have a busy Monday.

My hope is power stays on. Ice and powerlines…not good. Although after the huge ice storms we’ve had around Columbus, AEP has been very busy cutting out tree limbs around power lines. In some cases to the dismay of the tree owners.

I think there are clearances required by the utilities that people were getting away with before. Not now. There are some funky looking trees around older parts of the city that still have overhead electric wires.

By the way Sleuth. Since we got our new transformer after the power went out on half the 220 phase a few weeks back I have noticed a few things about the power. My TV cable box seems less prone for glitches and the signal doesn’t digitize as much as it was doing prior. There must have been a connection to the power issues.

Another thing…my battery backups on my computers seem way more stable too. Before they would start to warn that the power was cutting out and they were running on battery and yet a lot of other stuff wa fine.

Seems real sensitive stuff is not having issues as before. There must have been a lot of dips in the power.

Journalism and the Invasion of Grenada 30 Years On: A Retrospective

The 1983 United States-led invasion of Grenada represents an important case study of journalism in the front line because it marked a changing point in the relationship between journalists and the US administration. The exclusion of news organisations and independent journalists at the time can be conceived of as a test in trying new forms of information management. The tensions experienced between journalists, government and military officers signalled the need to design alternative solutions to the problem of information coverage in wartime.

John Young, an ‘astronauts’ astronaut’ who flew to the moon twice, dies

Young was the first astronaut to command the Space Shuttle. He flew to the moon twice.

Our achievements in manned space exploration are slowly sinking into the murky memories of yesteryear. Few people probably caught this story.

News of his death prompted tributes, including from fellow astronauts who called him a “hero” and “astronauts’ astronaut” and from former President George H. W. Bush.

Betcha Trump doesn’t even know about who’s who in astronauts.

ETA: And as a student of military history may I say what a clusterfuck the Grenada operation was? More complex than Operation Overlord and it took days to overcome a force 1/10th the size of the US forces and with much less equipment.

Most US casualties were caused by friendly fire and/or accidents.

I don’t expect 70 year old men to exercise. I do expect the POTUS to not be a fucktard.

He’s a Boomer. We’re all supposed to exercise in the vain hope of staving off old age.

BMI is stupid but he’s obese. Exercise seems to be of no interest to him.

Trump thinks that exercising too much uses up the body’s ‘finite’ energy

President Trump reportedly eschews exercise because he believes it drains the body’s “finite” energy resources, but experts say this argument is flawed because the human body actually becomes stronger with exercise.

Trump’s views on exercise were mentioned in a New Yorker article this month and in “Trump Revealed,” The Washington Post’s 2016 biography of the president, which noted that Trump mostly gave up athletics after college because he “believed the human body was like a battery, with a finite amount of energy, which exercise only depleted.”

I was once extolling the benefits of cycling over running to Mrs. FBW. I told her that not only is it LOW impact, it’s ZERO impact. Unless you run into something.

Then I ran into a car’s fender and dislocated my clavicle.

I went with a red sauce made from dried chilies steeped in hot water and then blended in a machine. Saute the raw sauce in a bit of oil then stir it into the pork broth. I think I used anchos and New Mexico chilies, I did add some chipotle powder for a touch of heat.
I still have some pork and broth leftover, I’ll make green posole with that in a few days.

We have several stores that stock the dried peppers so they are never a problem to procure. The local Kroger store often has them and there are a couple of smaller stores that cater to the migrant community that supplies the labor for the numerous orchards in the area.
