In the Latest Heartless Move by This Awful Administration, Trump Is Telling 200,000 Legal Salvadoran Residents to Get Out of the US

Immigration • Views: 45,779

Two hundred thousand Salvadoran families have been living legally in the US for 10 years.

But now the evil bastards in the Trump administration are throwing all these people out: 200,000 Salvadorans may be forced to leave the U.S. as Trump ends immigration protection.

In one of its most significant immigration decisions , the Trump administration said Monday that it will terminate the provisional residency permits of about 200,000 Salvadorans who have lived in the country since at least 2001, leaving them to potentially face deportation.

The administration said it will give the Salvadorans until Sept. 9, 2019, to leave the United States or find a way to obtain legal residency, according to a statement Monday from the Department of Homeland Security. The Salvadorans were granted what is known as Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, after earthquakes hit the country in 2001, and their permits have been renewed on an 18-month basis since then.

This is unconscionable. These people have been following all the rules and putting their names on record with the federal government, and now Donald Trump is going to use that very fact against them to target them for cruel, unjust expulsion.

Needless to say, the Salvadorans affected by this horrible decision are simply devastated.

Oscar Cortez feels like he has an ordinary American life. He carries a Costco card. He roots for the Boston Red Sox. And five days a week, he rises before dawn, pulls on four shirts and two pairs of pants, and ventures into the frigid air to work as a plumber, a good job that pays for his Maryland townhouse and his daughters’ college fund.

The U.S. government opened the door to this life in 2001 when it granted Cortez and about 200,000 other migrants from El Salvador Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a provisional relief from deportation that has allowed them to work legally in the United States for 17 years. On Monday, according to multiple people briefed on the plans, the federal government will take it away.

This is why the “we agree not to talk politics” is not an option for me. I don’t hang with Nazis and White Supremacists, family or otherwise. Fuck them. There is something wrong with their brains. I ain’t got that many years left to waste pretending that assholes aren’t really assholes.

They’re taxpayers.

They’ve paid into Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and they’re productive residents of the US.

They’re here because they’re working to give themselves and their families a better life.

Trump is a fucking nut who thinks that if you’re not white and European, you don’t belong here.

Why the move? It’s because he’s a bigot. There’s no other reason to end this program.

It’s worked. It’s working.

Or has someone whispered in his ear so that when he hears Salvadorans all he thinks of is MS-13?

Their leader conspired with a hostile power to gain power.
Their congressional leaders are complicit by not reining in this administration.
Their leader repeatedly lies.
Their leader has broken laws against self-enrichment.
Their leader has diminished American influence around the world.
Their entire conservative party is attacking media in order to neuter it.
Their entire conservative party is attacking long standing government institutions.
A large block of the conservative party is subverting the rule of law and attempting to use the legal system to attack opposing politicians.

But, you know, we should all just get along, its just politics, no need to make anyone uncomfortable. We’ll just agree to disagree, that’s what we’ll do. Good people can do all support all the things above and still be good people.

Bannon was against Trump before he was for him.

A conservative watchdog group led by Bannon tried to discredit Trump in the early stages of the 2016 Republican presidential primary by shopping a document alleging that Trump had ties to mobsters, according to conservative sources and a copy of the document reviewed by CNN.

The anti-Trump opposition research was the work of author Peter Schweizer for the Government Accountability Institute, which he cofounded with Bannon in 2012. It described years of alleged business connections between Trump companies and organized crime figures, allegations that have circulated among Trump detractors for years.

Being an English native speaker, I was curious where the guys were from. They listened and guessed Dominican or Puerto Rican. Ended up being Dominicans and we enjoyed the game together. I enjoyed teaching both my SiL’s sister and her husband about baseball, my favorite sport and we shared some good laughs about our niece.

I question Oprah’s judgment in people: Dr. Phil. Dr. Oz, etc.

She’s a great actress and a savvy businesswoman, but that doesn’t make her any more knowledgeable about the legal process than idiot Trump and his merry band of bigots.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Look, she is not perfect but I would refrain from tearing down anyone who will bring us back to sanity and compassion.

A huge part of being a politician is communicating and gaining consensus. I always felt like that was Bill Clinton’s big strength. She is an amazing communicator who has curated her public image over the years better than anyone. She will hire and appoint people who are sympathetic to our cause and based on her background favorable to the underprivileged.

Obama was amazing but one of his flaws was reaching the masses. Everything he did made sense to me but was too easily criticized and he would sometimes lose in the court of public opinion when he should have won.

Oprah is not my cup of tea but if she ran she would be a shoe in. Trump has inoculated her against the biggest attack against her. If the democrats want to pass universal healthcare do you want wonky Elizabeth Warren explaining it to the rubes or Oprah? What else is on our wishlist? Getting rid of gerrymandering? Sherrod Brown explaining it to the masses or Oprah? Kaine explaining gun control?

How do you think she would do in debates? How freaking long would he coattails be? Would she bring out the minorities? The female vote? Soccer moms?

We are going to tear her down before the other side even starts? Gee I wonder how we didn’t win last time?

Reminder:

Trump wants to send back these lawful and legal immigrants to El Salvador.

Guess what he’s not giving back: the money all these folks paid into SS/Medicare/Medicaid. They’re lawfully entitled to these funds, but Trump’s going to take the money and run.

OT: Mr. C. and I ran errands together this morning (mostly his errands, but we were going past something we both needed to do, so we did the whole lot together.) After stop #3 he commented that we were spending more time driving than we were at any of the stops we made. I think I need to make him do more errands, because really, that’s what errands are. Sigh. I think I’ll keep him anyway. Besides, it gave me a chance to impress him with my knowledge of which side street to take to have the most direct route.

Bonus, the picking up his new glasses part could have been done 2 weeks ago had Kaiser emailed they were in rather than texting the fact to our landline.

I just cannot wrap my head around the fact that we have an administration that has no problem making 200,000 thousand people leave. And the amount of people in this country who totally support this makes me ill.

El Salvador has a population of just over 6 million.

Those 200,000 we’re sending back, with their spouses (many of whom are American) and 200,000 children (all of whom are American)… is going to increase El Salvador’s population by almost 10% overnight.

She’s not doing anything right now but giving an important speech that was about representation and being a great example, how that happened in her life (Poitier). It focused on truth, centering equality and justice and about hope. I think she’s keenly aware of how important the midterms are and I’d bet everything in her speech resonates with GOTV for the midterms. Her 1 big political investment was a pretty good one. And no doubt she still talks to Obama who is also working with Holder on voter suppression issues which is very important for the midterms.

Until she starts being a damaging and inept figure like Bernie, then I’m cool with her being around.

How the media handles her is likely to be shitty, but we already expect this.

Robert E Barnes, who was Wesley Snipes tax attorney. This case is way outside his specialty, he’s probably getting paid a lot. Chuck reportedly gained access to approximately $1.5 million money when he froze out Pax Dickenson from their Wesearcher scam, so I expect him to use that and attempt further fundraising from the rubes to pay for this hopeless lawsuit.

I haven’t seen it yet so I can’t speak objectively on that but I just worry we see anyone as an improvement over Trump and should be trying to do more than that.

Interesting. In his statement, Royce says (emphasis mine):

“In this final year of my Foreign Affairs Committee chairmanship, I want to focus fully on the urgent threats facing our nation, including: the brutal, corrupt and dangerous regimes in Pyongyang and Tehran, Vladimir Putin’s continued efforts to weaponize information to fracture western democracies, and growing terrorist threats in Africa and Central Asia,” Royce said in a statement.

“With this in mind, and with the support of my wife Marie, I have decided not to seek reelection in November.”

Could he be retiring in order to do the right thing with the time he’s got left? I have my doubts, but it’s a nice thought.

I heard people talking about it in the context of Oprah potentially running for President so I probably graded it against a standard set by Obama. Honestly it was better than any speech Sanders made and as good as Hillary’s nomination speech which was probably her best. The thing that really got me though is that it basically had fuck all to do with politics per se, at least outside the narrow context of the me too movement and the history of racial & sexual discrimination in Hollywood. She did reference being thankful for the news media in a modern environment where it’s under attack but overall it just didn’t strike me as being crafted with political ambitions in mind.

I felt like being snarky and saying “You want to send them to Norway?” I mean I think they’re a little naive in wanting what those nation states have done since those countries are so much smaller than ours and there wasn’t the racist backlash due to them not being as diverse when they first implemented their policies but that is what those students want. This is an underappreciated bit of history - Americans flirted with all sorts of crazy governmental and economic ideas before WWII, largely because Capitalism wasn’t really serving the average guy all that well. During the Cold War, Communism didn’t really catch on because we had harnessed Capitalism and gotten it to work for everybody.

But since the advent of Reagan, we’ve increasingly deregulated it and now it’s serving fewer and fewer people, and young people least of all.

Exactly. Said better than I could. I get tired of older boomers and even Gen Xers who crap on pyople in my generation for not being rah rah capitalism and I just feel like saying gude do you even consider how much regulations we had when you were growing up. We never were your capitalist wet dream. Your beloved 1950’s? Probably among the most socialist time we’ve ever been as a nation and we prospered. I don’t see socialism as a cure all but I certainly don’t see their vision of capitalism either because it’s based on a lie.

Capitalism is a religion to them, rather than a tool.

Yep. Which is why they get furious when the kids question it. But as said, their idea of capitalism is based on a lie that they’ve told themselves and been told by their talking heads. Trump especially on the matter of trade is no capitalist.

This is what I’m talking about, Oprah’s speech was a cipher and so many people just heard what they wanted to hear in it. They’re so busy projecting their own desires on top that they can’t just let it be about what it was about. Matthews is so eager as an older white guy to piss on identity politics that he didn’t even notice Oprah talking about seeing Sidney Poitier be the first black man to win the CBD aware or her being the first black woman to win it. Chris completely missed the entire point about how important these milestones are, how the symbology has a real impact especially on shaping the perceptions of young viewers.

Someone being the first PoC may not mean shit to you as a white person but it does often to PoC. And you know what, LBJ 50 years ago got that. He really saw Thurgood Marshall not as a great pick for SCOTUS but as someone that African-Americans could look up to. And that’s why it’s so shitty for me to hear politicians like Sanders or pundits like Tweety there shit on “ethnic politics.” When you’re of a race whose ancestors were brought to this country in forced chattel, when your relatives as recently as 50 years ago had to worry about saying sir to a white man lest they fear being lynched, etc, you’re going to be proud of your racial accomplishments. It’s not a double standard. It’s the result of treating PoC like others for years in what was just as much their country as it was yours.

I want someone with governing experience for POTUS. I’d like Oprah to be a huge resource in various ways for that person and for the process more generally, from the outside. Kamala and Kristen are at the top of my list right now, but so much can change.
But I also think she is more than qualified to enter the primary if she wants. Carly and Meg and tons of other horrible candidates did.

I’m seeing a lot of downplaying her resume and legacy. She is far, far more than an entertainer and is not comparable to 45 or even The Rock (who appears functional).
I think many folks are just uneducated about a lot of what she’s done so they should stay open to learning more. Then of course there are those being shamefully resistant to seeing her whole legacy regardless of how much they learn. That’s to be expected from some.

I’ve had my issues with her and some of her associates over the years too.
When I was on the radio in the early 2000s I often criticized her for that The Secret/respectability bullshit. And no, the woo Dr’s are not worse than Nazis, sorry. I’ve had issues with Obama, Hillary etc for wack associates and positions too.

She is a self-made billionaire with successful publishing and broadcasting properties among other business ventures. She’s been a tireless education activist - built schools, scholarship funds etc. And there is so much more.

I sure hope all the talk about Oprah doesn’t take away from the shock of Wolff’s book.

Political talk sure travels fast and we end up bouncing all over the place, often losing the focus on what is important to chase the next big thing.

We need to worry about 2018 House and Senate.

Maybe Oprah can talk about how important that is. Then she can get her feet wet with politics, prove some chops with the press and other pols, and help set her own stage. And do something that is politically good right now that Americans can wrap their heads around and understand.

But we can’t lose focus on 2018 with an outside candidate that’s a what-if at this time. If she wants in…start working for it.

This is why sometimes celebrity can be a huge distraction. Hopefully she does the right thing.

348
Blind Frog Belly White  Jan 8, 2018 • 5:41:00pm

I’ll say this - Oprah is more qualified to be President than Trump. But that’s setting a REALLY FUCKING LOW BAR!!!

I heard someone today say that Trump’s election meant we were in a new era. If that’s so, then we need to radically change the authority and responsibility of the office, because as we’re discovering under Trump, electing somebody who only wants to be Head of State to the job of Head of Government is a goddam catastrophe.

Oprah may be smart, caring, well-read, able to speak on issues, etc., but she’s got zero experience in governing. This is not the place for on-the-job training, even with an apt pupil.

I understand how people might latch on to her speech and think it’s the greatest thing EVAR!!!! but really, we’re like people in the desert dying of thirst - we’d drink water out of the toilet and it would taste like nectar, but it’s still water out of the toilet.

We have plenty of WOMEN already serving in government who are far more qualified. If she wants to run for representative or even governor somewhere? Sure. Go for it. Gotta get your feet wet somehow. But President? No.

Yeah, the wingnuts have it plastered all over Facebook with a bunch of lies including how Oprah helped Weinstein rape a woman.

Kind of surprised to see it here.

Who posted that she helped Weinstein rape a woman here? Got a name?

This may result in downdings. Whatever.

Nope. Want someone who has actual experience in Government, not some tyro who doesn’t have clue. She can run if she wants, but I will not vote for her based upon her current resume. IOW, let her get some House or Senate experience (like HRC did) and then make a run at it. Until then, nope.

Not to mention that the fact that everybody’s is operating under the assumption that she would be running as a Democrat…

That’s how I feel too. I feel she’s free to run if she wants to but I have many others much more ahead of her.

I still got fresh marks on my hand for trying to swat that kinda thing down regarding HRC.

Sigh.

re: #320 JordanRules

Just don’t erase her and her legacy as this debate continues.

Not a prob. Let her run for a Sen/House position first. POTUS isn’t a OJT position as we are seeing now. It takes experience to sit in that chair. Experience she doesn’t have.

Agree with that too. And yet if she doesn’t, like many before her, we can not support her in the primary.
Really just want some fair reflection on her whole life at this point, per my last sentence.

Trickle-up Economics!

Cisco, Pfizer, Coca-Cola plan to turn over gains from proposed tax cuts to shareholders

As a shareholder of Cisco and Coca-Cola, I can’t complain, but I’m not going to be able to buy much of anything with those dividends. I’m not a mega-bigly shareholder.
